Abstract
Objectives Unaided visual inspection is a primary dental screening technique. Given the uneven distribution of dental services and prolonged waiting periods, an alternative screening approach is required to increase access to dental care. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy and reliability of tele-screening for detecting dental caries using mobile intra-oral photos taken by participants. Methods Dental care seekers attending Umm Al-Qura University Teaching Dental Hospital in 2022 were invited to participate in this study. The participants were initially examined by dental interns at the hospital under the supervision of faculty dentists (reference standard) before intra-oral photos were acquired by a trained sixth-year dental student using a Samsung S10 camera. Following an introduction to the photography guide, the same participants then took intra-oral photos of their teeth at home using their mobile devices, which were all uploaded to WhatsApp for later review. Two trained dental reviewers (sixth-year dental students) independently reviewed the intra-oral photos. Sensitivity, specificity, and Kappa scores were estimated to assess the performance of the tele-screening approach relative to the reference unaided dental examination. Results Twenty-three participants, with a mean age of 30 ± 12 years, were enrolled. The mean decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT) was 13.43 ± 5.48. Patient-delivered tele-screening demonstrated a sensitivity, specificity, and inter-rater reliability kappa of 94 %, 90 %, and 0.81, respectively, when compared to unaided dental examination. Dentist-delivered tele-screening approach demonstrated a sensitivity of 88-89 %, specificity of 88-91 %, and kappa score of 0.75-0.79 relative to unaided dental examination. Conclusions This study demonstrated that the tele-screening approach based on reviewing intra-oral photos taken by participants can be a valid and reliable alternative to unaided dental examination. This is important for ensuring sustainable access to dental care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tele-dentistry has been increasingly used for different purposes of visit, consultation, triage, screening, and training in oral medicine. This study aims to determine the main facilitators, barriers, and participants` viewpoints of applying tele-dentistry in oral medicine and develop a framework indicating the input, process, output, and feedback. METHOD This was a scoping review conducted in 2022 applying Arksey and O'Malley (2005) approach. Four databases including ISI web of science, PubMed, Scopus, and ProQuest were searched from January 1999 to December 2021. Inclusion criteria consisted of all original and non-original articles (reviews, editorials, letters, comments, and book chapters), and dissertations in English with a full text electronic file. Excel2016 was used for descriptive quantitative analysis and MAXQDA version 10 was applied for qualitative thematic analysis. A thematic framework was developed customizing the results of the review in a virtual mini expert panel. RESULTS Descriptive results show that among 59 included articles, 27 (46%) have addressed the various applications of tele-dentistry during COVID-19 pandemic in the field of oral medicine. From geographical distribution perspective, most of the papers were published in Brazil (n = 13)/ 22.03%, India (n = 7)/11.86% and USA (n = 6)/10.17%. Thematic analysis shows that seven main themes of "information", "skill", "human resource", 'technical", "administrative', 'financial', and 'training and education' are explored as facilitators. 'Individual', 'environmental', 'organizational', 'regulation', 'clinical', and 'technical barriers' are also identified as main barriers of tele-dentistry in oral medicine. CONCLUSION According to the results for using tele-dentistry services in oral medicine, a diverse category of facilitators should be considered and at the same time, different barriers should be managed. Users` satisfaction and perceived usefulness of tele-dentistry as final outcomes can be increased considering the system`s feedback and applying facilitator incentives as well as decreasing the barriers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND During the first COVID-19 lockdown, from March 12 to May 15, 2020, private dental practices in France and in many other countries remained closed. Dental emergencies were therefore partly redirected to hospital dental departments. The aim of this article is to describe the modalities of remote management of emergencies during this period, by the pediatric dentistry department of Nancy University Hospital (France), via an oral telemedicine protocol. PATIENTS AND METHODS All parents of children in difficulty were invited to contact the department by phone. Initial triage was managed by externs, interns, or dental practitioners following a management protocol specifically adapted to pediatric dentistry for this context. Depending on the situation (type of complaint, geographical location of the patients, possibility of travel, availability of digital equipment, etc.), an oral telemedicine solution was proposed using the Covotem® software (Maincare Society, Canejan, France) via the Pulsy platform (public interest grouping validated by the Grand Est Regional Agency for Health) and possibly using an intraoral photographic protocol suggested by the team. RESULTS During this period, 176 patients used the pediatric dental department, 40 of whom were managed via oral telemedicine. Of these children, 57% (23/40) required an appointment in the department during the lockdown, 30% (12/40) did not require follow-up, and 13% (5/40) required a post-lockdown appointment. This teledentistry protocol resulted in a diagnosis in most cases (93%). CONCLUSION Patient management through oral telemedicine appears to be an effective tool for planning and organizing oral healthcare. It should be more widely considered in dentistry in the current context of pressure in medical emergencies, significant medical needs, and medical desertification.

KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER STATEMENT This article discusses innovations in technology and treatments that have enormous potential to revolutionize our dental care, including novel concepts in electronic health records, communication between dentists and patients, biologics around diagnosis and treatment, digital dentistry, and, finally, the real-time optimization of information technology. The early implementation and validation of these innovations can drive down their costs and provide better dental and medical services to all members of our society.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Investigate whether clinically assessed oral care status by an external dentist can be replicated using smartphone photographs. BACKGROUND Many people with care needs have poor oral hygiene. To help maintain oral health, caregivers require a simple way of communicating oral care status to the dental team. MATERIALS AND METHODS Cross-sectional study in which smartphone photographs of the oral and prosthetic care situation of N = 50 nursing-home patients (mean age 85.6 [SD 6] years, 74% women) were assessed by two blinded, external examiners (D1/D2) and compared with clinical assessments made by the onsite dentist who also took the photographs (D0). Intraoral care status was clinically evaluated using the modified Plaque Index for Long-Term Care (PI-LTC) and Denture Hygiene Index (DHI). The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) determined correlations between clinical and photographic findings. RESULTS The ICC was assessed for the PI-LTC (upper jaw, n = 41; lower jaw, n = 49) and DHI (upper jaw, n = 25; lower jaw, n = 18). The DHI showed excellent reliability between clinical assessment and smartphone evaluation for the determination of positive surfaces (ICC: upper 0.91 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.83-0.96], P < 0.001; lower 0.95 [95% CI 0.89-0.98], P < 0.001). The PI-LTC showed good reliability between clinical assessment (D0) and D1/D2 for determination of vestibular plaque (ICC: upper 0.84 [95% CI 0.74-0.91], P < 0.001; lower 0.87 [95% CI 0.79-0.92], P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Although limited, this pilot study demonstrated that standardised smartphone photographs can simply communicate the intraoral care status of patients who have difficulties accessing their dentist. This should be considered when planning improved communication between dentists, care recipients, and their support network.

Abstract
During the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, otolaryngology has been shown to be a high-risk specialty due to the exposure to aerosol-generating physical examinations, procedures and surgical interventions on the head and neck area, both in adult and paediatric patients. This has prompted the issue of updating the guidelines by International Health Authorities in the Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) field and, at the same time, has stimulated engineers and healthcare professionals to develop new devices and technologies with the aim of reducing the risk of contamination for physicians, nurses and patients. Methods A review of the literature published on PubMed, Ovid/Medline and Scopus databases was performed from January 01, 2020 to December 31, 2021. Results 73 articles were eligible to be included, which were subdivided into 4 categories: ("Artificial Intelligence (AI)"; "Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)"; "Diagnostic tools"; "Surgical tools"). Conclusions All of the innovations that have been developed during the COVID-19 pandemic have laid the foundation for a radical technological change of society, not only in medicine but also from a social, political and economical points of view that will leave its mark in the coming decades.
