Resilience and coping: a qualitative analysis of cognitive and behavioral factors in adults with osteogenesis Imperfecta

PURPOSE

The aim of this qualitative study was to investigate resilience among adults with Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 adults with OI. Transcripts were coded and subsequently abstracted, yielding themes specific to resilience and coping. Interview guides covered broad topics including pain challenges specific to OI, mental health issues related to OI, and priorities for future interventions for individuals with OI.

RESULTS

Participants described resilience in the context of OI as the ability to grow from adversity, adapt to challenges resulting from OI-related injuries, and find identities apart from their condition. Psychological coping strategies included acceptance, self-efficacy, cognitive reframing, perspective-taking, and positivity. Behavioral factors that helped participants develop resilience included developing new skills, pursuing meaningful goals, practicing spirituality, and seeking external resources such as psychotherapy, education, and connection with community.

CONCLUSION

Having identified how adults with OI define resilience and the strategies they use to cope, we can now develop interventions and guide healthcare providers in improving psychological wellbeing in this population.

The influence of social alienation on maintenance hemodialysis patients' coping styles: chain mediating effects of family resilience and caregiver burden

Objective

Research on the possible impact of social alienation, family resilience, and caregiver burden on the coping styles of Chinese patients on maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) is scarce. We explore the influence of social alienation, family resilience, and caregiver burden on the coping styles of MHD patients, both directly and indirectly.

Methods

We invited 173 MHD patients and their primary caregivers for a cross-sectional study; the study using convenience sampling method at the hemodialysis center of the First People's Hospital of Foshan. The Chinese version of the generalized social of alienation scale, the Chinese version of the simplified coping style questionnaire, and a sociodemographic questionnaire were completed by the MHD patients, while their primary caregivers had filled out the Chinese family resilience assessment scale, the Chinese version of the Zarit caregiver burden interview, and provided socio-demographic information. SPSS macro program PROCESS v3.3 Model 6 were used for analyses of chain-mediated effects.

Results

In the mediating effects model, the direct influence of social alienation upon coping styles was significant (95% CI -0.050, -0.014), and social alienation indirectly impacted coping style by family resilience in a significant way (95% CI -0.012, -0.001) or caregiver burden (95% CI -0.013, -0.001). In addition, social alienation significantly impacted coping style by both family resilience and caregiver burden (95% CI -0.008, -0.001).

Conclusion

Social alienation can exert both a direct and indirect influence on coping styles through the mediating factors of family resilience and caregiver burden. Clinicians can take interventions to strengthen family resilience and reduce caregiver burden, which may be useful in improving socially isolated behaviors and coping skills in MHD patients.

Resilience as a Mediator of the Association between Spirituality and Self-Management among Older People with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

This study examined the mediating effect of resilience in the relationship between spirituality and self-management among older people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The participants were 151 older people with COPD in four general hospitals in Jiangsu Province, China. Data were collected from September 2020 to May 2021 using a questionnaire developed by the investigator, the Function Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Spiritual Scale (FACIT-SP-12), 10-item Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC-10), and COPD Self-Management Scale (CSMS). One-way ANOVA and t-test were used to compare the level of self-management in patients with different sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. Partial correlation analysis was used to explore the correlation between spirituality, resilience, and self-management. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses were performed to examine the contribution of spirituality and resilience to the prediction of self-management. A bootstrapping test was implemented using the SPSS PROCESS macro to test the statistical significance of the mediating effect. There was a pairwise positive correlation between spirituality, resilience, and self-management. Resilience mediated the relationship between spirituality and self-management. These findings suggested that resilience interventions could be incorporated into future COPD self-management interventions to better improve self-management and health outcomes. Moreover, resilience should be an important component of healthy aging initiatives.

The relationship between coping strategies and resilience among adolescents with beta-thalassemia major

PROBLEM

Adolescents with beta thalassemia major face various physical and psychosocial challenges. Resilience plays a protective role in coping with the stress resulting from this disease.

METHODS

This descriptive correlational study was carried out on 134 adolescents (age: 11-21 years old) with beta-thalassemia major who were referred at the Thalassemia Centre in southern Iran from October to December 2018 via convenience sampling method. The Jalowiec Coping scale and Connor-Davidson resilience scale were the instruments used in this study. Data analysis was done using Pearson correlation coefficient and linear regression.

FINDINGS

Resilience was shown to be correlated with the subscales of confrontive, optimistic, supportant, and evasive coping significantly and positively (p < .001), while in the subscale of emotive coping with resilience, this was not significant. In addition, 38% of variations in the scale of resilience were explained by the five coping subscales.

CONCLUSIONS

The findings of this study, indicated the role of courageous coping in promoting resilience and defensive coping as a factor that leads to less resilience than optimal level. Hence, understanding the importance and the role of protective factors and risk factors can help healthcare providers in planning some effective interventions to increase resilience among adolescents with thalassemia.
