Gradual behaviour change towards meat reduction: Development and validation of a novel decisional balance scale

Meat reduction is gaining attention among consumers, marketers, policymakers and scientists. Yet little is known about decision-making processes and behaviour change towards meat reduction. This paper explores the applicability of the decisional balance (DB) framework to the field of meat reduction. A novel DB scale to measure the perceived importance of beliefs about meat reduction at different stages of behaviour change was developed and validated in two studies with German meat eaters. In Study 1 (N = 309), the item inventory was tested using an exploratory factor analysis and then validated in Study 2 (N = 809). The results yielded two higher-order DB factors (pros and cons), which were subdivided into five lower-order factors (perceived benefits of a plant-based diet, downsides of factory farming, health barriers, legitimation barriers and feasibility barriers). The pros and cons were summarised in a DB index. All DB factors and the DB index were tested for internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha ≥.70) and aspects of validity. The typical DB pattern of the pros and cons of behaviour change was confirmed: the cons outweighed the pros for consumers who did not intend to reduce meat consumption, while the pros outweighed the cons for consumers who intended to reduce meat consumption. The new DB scale for meat reduction has proven to be a suitable measure to gain insights into consumers' decision making and could be used to develop targeted meat reduction interventions.

Organ Donation Willingness Among Asian Americans: Results from a National Study

Asian Americans are the fastest growing racial group in the USA, but their health disparities are often overlooked. Although their needs for transplantable organs are substantial, they have the lowest rates of organ donation per million compared to other Americans by race. To better understand Asian Americans' disposition toward organ donation, a self-administered survey was developed based on formative data collection and guidance from a Community Advisory Board composed of Asian American stakeholders. The instrument was deployed online, and quota sampling based on the 2017 American Community Survey was used to achieve a sample representative (N = 899) of the Asian American population. Bivariate tests using logistic regression and the chi-square test of independence were performed. Over half (58.1%) of respondents were willing to be organ donors. A majority (81.8%) expressed a willingness to donate a family member's organs, but enthusiasm depended on the family member's donor wishes. Only 9.5% of respondents indicated that the decision to donate their organs was theirs alone to make; the remainder would involve at least one other family member. Other key sociodemographic associations were found. This study demonstrates both the diversity of Asian Americans but also the centrality of the family's role in making decisions about organ donation. Practice and research considerations for the field are also presented.

Organ donation: Key factors influencing the younger generation's decision-making in China

Background

The organ transplantation sector in China is facing a severe shortage of donors, and the organ donation rate needs to be increased. Since 2015, voluntary donation by citizens has become the only source of organs for transplantation in China. In recent years, there has been a relatively positive change in young people's attitudes toward organ donation after death. The aim of the study was to understand young people's perceptions and attitudes toward organ donation and the factors that influence them and can positively impact the promotion of organ donation.

Methods

By analyzing relevant literature and legal texts, we developed a questionnaire. Information was obtained through questionnaires and interviews, and 501 valid questionnaires were returned from the target group. A chi-square test was used to examine whether there were significant differences in the willingness to organ donation among young people with different characteristics. A factor analysis was used to investigate the main factors influencing the different attitudes of young people toward organ donation, and a one-way ANOVA was used to examine whether young people with different characteristics were affected differently by different factors.

Results

In our survey of young people aged 18-30 years, 99.2% of respondents knew about organ donation, 47.1% were willing to donate organs, and 15.2% understood that there were corresponding laws and regulations for organ donation. The study's findings showed that urban residents are more willing to be organ donators than rural residents; people with higher education levels have better awareness and are more willing to donate an organ; and people with religious beliefs are more likely to donate organs. The main factors that support the willingness of young people to donate are the social environment that provides support, their optimism in dealing with death, and their desire to realize their final value after death. The main factors for those unwilling to donate were low awareness or misconceptions about organ donation among individuals and their families and their attitudes toward death. As the people who took the questionnaire are probably interested in organ donation, the sample results will show a higher percentage of people who know about organ donation. We hope to discuss further with a larger and broader sample coverage to improve the estimates' validity and reflect the overall picture more accurately in a future study.

Conclusion

Young people knew about organ donation but had a low depth of awareness. Household registration type, education level, and religious affiliation significantly correlate with people's willingness to donate. The supportive environment for organ donation in society and the correct understanding of the organ donation process and laws and regulations can influence people's willingness to donate.

Improvement of osteoporosis-related behaviors in female students based on trans theoretical model

BACKGROUND

Osteoporosis is one of the major problems associated with aging and is more common among women than men. This study was designed to modify osteoporosis-related behaviors in female students based on the transtheoretical model (TTM).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This quasi-experimental study was conducted on female secondary school students. The sample size was determined 100 by using Altman's nomogram, including 50 cases and 50 controls. Participants were completed the Demographic Information and Osteoporosis-Related Behavior Questionnaire based on TTM. Evaluation of the data showed that each participant was at what stage of change in physical activity and preventive dietary behavior of osteoporosis. The content of the training package was designed, and for the intervention group, 2-h training sessions were held weekly by the instructor in accordance with the stage of change for 2 months, and the booklet was provided with the appropriate contents of the stage of change. Three months after the completion of training, the questionnaires were completed by intervention and control groups. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 23 software.

RESULTS

Concerning the stages of change in physical activity and nutrition, a significant difference was before and after the intervention in the intervention group (P < 0.001), while no significant difference was observed in the control group. After the intervention, there was a significant difference in the self-efficacy and some subconstruct of processes of change, but there wasnot a significant difference in the decisional balance.

CONCLUSION

Educational intervention based on TTM has been successful in achieving the goal of modifying osteoporosis-related behaviors in female students. The results of this study can be used by health planners to plan and implement health promotion interventions that will undoubtedly help reduce the burden of disease.

Organ Donation Decisional Balance Survey: Reliability and Validity of the Turkish Version

OBJECTIVES

Despite the positive view about organ donation in our society, many people remain reluctant to donate. Identifying the perceived advantages and disadvantages and raising awareness about organ donation may help promote willingness for eligible people to become donors. Our aim was to determine the validity and reliability of the Organ Donation Decisional Balance Survey for the Turkish community in order to implement the transtheoretical model of behavior change and to emphasize the positive aspects of organ donation during the process of decision making.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A total of 420 adults, including 304 women and 116 men, voluntarily participated in the study. A personal information form, now known as the Organ Donation Decisional Balance Survey, and the Compassion of Others' Lives scale were used to evaluate the participants. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to examine the factor structure of the questionnaire. All data were analyzed with confirmatory factor analysis using the Amos 16 programs.

RESULTS

Analysis results showed that the fit index values of the survey were acceptable (P < .01). Factor loads of the survey for the advantages subdimension were between 0.53 and 0.78, and the factor loads for the disadvantages subdimension were from 0.46 to 0.75. Internal consistency of these 2 components resulted in an acceptable Cronbach alpha value. We also identified a positive correlation between the advantages score and the Compassion of Others' Lives scale score.

CONCLUSIONS

This survey can guide those who prepare training programs on organ donation by highlighting positive thoughts and reducing negative judgments. The Turkish version of the Organ Donation Decisional Balance Survey is acceptable, valid, and reliable.

Accounting for organ donation decision-making: Analyzing interview discourse of the donors' relatives and intensive care unit physicians in Greece

The study casts light on the organ donation decision-making process by exploring the experiences of families and physicians involved. Specifically, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 family members of 11 different donors and with 13 intensive care unit physicians. Data collection and analysis draws on the principles of Grounded Theory Methodology. Analysis indicated that in the accounts of both groups, organ donation is represented as a multi-faceted process that includes various social and ideological dilemmas. Overlap and mutual influence was found connecting the experiences of family members and those of physicians, highlighting the need for further education and training for physicians and aftercare for families.

It’s all relative: Increasing organ donor registration intentions by maximizing family-relevant vested interest

Guided by vested interest theory, the impact of educating potential organ donors about the beneficial experiences afforded to families of deceased donors was assessed. Participants were informed about these benefits by taking a survey that asked them to indicate both their awareness, and the appeal, of numerous existing benefits (e.g. grief services). We employed a double-sided mixed design. Both the true experimental design and the quasi-experimental repeated assessment indicated increased registration intentions. Only the quasi-experimental design indicated significant attitude change. This study provides evidence supporting the potential utility of focusing interventions on the benefits afforded to donor families.

A Community-Based Study of Giving ACTS: Organ Donation Education for African American Adults

BACKGROUND

Transplantation continues to be the therapy of choice for people experiencing end-stage organ failure. African Americans (AAs) are overrepresented among those awaiting an available organ for the purpose of a transplant, yet donate at rates lower than other races due to a list of well-studied barriers. The Giving ACTS (About Choices in Transplantation and Sharing) Intervention was developed to provide culturally appropriate messaging to AAs about organ and tissue donation and transplantation (OTDT). The purpose of this community-based study was to test the extent to which the intervention was effective in (1) improving donation-related knowledge and attitudes among AA participants, and (2) increasing registration on the state donor registry.

METHODS

Using a single-group, pre-post design, 1,585 participants received the intervention in small groups hosted in community settings.

RESULTS

From baseline to immediate follow-up, participants significantly increased in OTDT-related knowledge, beliefs and attitudes, endorsement of the positive consequences of donation, and willingness to donate (all ps < .001). Participants' beliefs about the negative consequences of organ and tissue donation, however, did not significantly change, and registration on the state donor registry was negligible (1.3%).

CONCLUSION

Results suggest that Giving ACTS was generally successful in improving attitudes and beliefs; the intervention, however, was not effective in changing participants' beliefs about the negative consequences of OTDT, or increasing actual registration behaviors. Future studies in this area should be conducted to empirically evaluate the role of distrust in healthcare systems among AAs and its possible mediating effect on the relationship between donation-related education and the desired health behaviors.
