Making Sense of Gynecologic Cancer: A Relational Dialectics Approach

This study used the relational dialectics theory (RDT) as a theoretical lens to examine how the interplay of competing discourses shaped meaning making about gynecologic cancer. A reflexive thematic analysis of the narratives of 12 survivors of cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, and uterine cancer in Arkansas showed two discursive struggles at play, including continuity of care versus change, and voicing versus repressing of feelings. The findings showed that long history of care with physicians contributed to how participants privileged the discourse of continuity of care when faced with a decision to travel for care or receive care locally. We also found that cultural discourses about concealing women's cancer-afflicted bodies, lack of supportive spaces for women to discuss side effects of cancer treatments, and appropriate communication behavior between patients and physicians shaped the interplay of the discursive struggle of voicing versus repressing. The findings extend the RDT by showing that geographic location, disease characteristics, history of care between patients and physicians, and prevailing cultural discourses can contribute to the interplay of discursive struggles in the gynecologic cancer context. Further, the findings suggest to healthcare professionals to address harmful discourses about gynecologic cancer to help create support avenues for survivors.

The wounded blogger: analysis of narratives by women with breast cancer

The purpose of this article is to analyse the representation of the body in seven blogs by Spanish women with breast cancer. Using both texts and images, we analyse how they reproduce modern and postmodern logic to represent the wounded body. Based on Frank's proposals, this article draws the conclusion that the women bloggers mainly reproduce the modern logic (characterised by the restitution narrative and a predictable, disassociated and monadic body), but there are elements which break with this logic (the quest narrative, the body presented as associated, dyadic and full of desire, and the acceptance of contingency). After applying Frank's categories, we suggest that the contemporary way of experiencing illness may question the clarity of the modern/postmodern divide.

“Does That Make Me A Woman?”

Feminist scholars and activists writing about breast cancer care among women have highlighted the sexist and heterosexist assumptions often embedded in the medical management of breast cancer, and of mastectomy in particular. Despite these contributions, and some speculation that sexual minority women may be less interested in breast reconstruction, limited research explores sexual minority women’s lived experience of mastectomy and decision making about reconstruction. Thirteen lesbian and/or bisexual women who had undergone mastectomy for treatment of breast cancer participated in individual qualitative interviews exploring decisions to have, or not have, breast reconstruction. Reasons for/against reconstruction reflected themes identified in prior studies among heterosexual women. Although participants described sexual, gender, and political identities and orientations as influences on their decision making, for most participants, experiences with physicians who encouraged reconstruction and concerns about stigmatization of illness in romantic, professional, and social contexts were also central. Findings are interpreted through feminist dis/ability, medicalization, and existential frameworks.

Illness and Internet empowerment: writing and reading breast cancer in cyberspace

The Internet is now a site where women with breast cancer both read and write about the illness, and in doing so negotiate identity and definitions of situation in disembodied space. Cyberspace has been imagined as a liberatory realm where women can transgress gender roles, invent selves and create new forms of knowledge. This study explores the personal web pages of women with breast cancer with an interest in exploring the issue of 'cyber-agency' or empowerment in cyberspace. I suggest here that women's web pages might offer potentially critical opportunities for women's knowledge-making in relation to what are often highly political aspects of the body, gender and illness. However, the Internet is not an inherently empowering technology, and it can be a medium for affirming norms of femininity, consumerism, individualism and other powerful social messages.
