Development and evaluation of diversity-oriented competence training for the treatment of depressive disorders

Cultural Competence Interventions in European Healthcare: A Scoping Review

Europe is undergoing rapid social change and is distinguished by its cultural superdiversity. Healthcare is facing an increasing need for professionals to adapt to this environment. Thus, the promotion of cultural competence in healthcare has become a priority. However, the training being developed and their suitability for the European context are not well known. The aim of this qualitative study has been to map the scientific literature in order to comprehend the current state of research on this topic. For this purpose, we conducted a systematic scoping review of the empirical publications focused on cultural competence interventions for healthcare professionals in European countries. The search was conducted in eight thematic (PsycINFO, MedLine, and PubPsych) and multidisciplinary databases (Academic Search Ultimate, E-Journals, Scopus, ProQuest, and Web of Science) to identify relevant publications up to 2023. Results were presented qualitatively. Out of the initial 6506 records screened, a total of 63 publications were included. Although the interventions were implemented in 23 different European countries, cultural competence interventions have not been widely adopted in Europe. Significant heterogeneity was observed in the conception and operacionalización of cultural competence models and in the implementation of the interventions. The interventions have mostly aimed at improving healthcare for minority population groups and have focused on the racial and ethnic dimensions of the individual. Future research is needed to contribute to the conceptual development of cultural competence to design programs tailored to European superdiversity. Diversity training evaluation for community aged care: Tool development

Diversity characteristics such as culture, sexual orientation, and social situation potentially impact the participation of older individuals in healthcare. An awareness of diversity characteristics and their potential to impact on older people's access to health and aged care by professionals through training is important. This paper outlines the development and initial validation of a survey using adapted Delphi methodology and distribution to 195 health and aged care professionals pre- and post-diversity training. An initial pool of 31 items were developed with an expert reference group and reduced to 21 through exploratory factor analysis. A two-factor solution was extracted, measuring skills and attitudes of professionals relative to providing services to older people with diverse characteristics. Internal consistency of the items yielded a Cronbach alpha of 0.78. T-tests conducted on the pre- and post-survey data showed significantly higher scores on the domains of skills and attitudes following the training. Knowledge was not effectively captured using this method, with true-false or free-recall questions being a more appropriate approach. This tool fills a gap in the evaluation literature, providing an important first step to assess outcomes of diversity training in community aged care. Further validation is necessary for the tool to be used more widely in the sector.

Autonomy–Connectedness, Self-Construal, and Acculturation: Associations With Mental Health in a Multicultural Society

The present study investigated the associations between self-construal, acculturation, and autonomy–connectedness, as well as the relations between autonomy–connectedness and psychopathological symptoms, controlling for self-construal and acculturation. Participants were 1,209 Dutch individuals, of whom 693 (57.3%) were immigrants with a non-Western background. Results showed that an independent self-construal was positively associated with self-awareness and capacity for managing new situations, and was negatively associated with sensitivity to others (which are the three components of autonomy–connectedness). Moreover, an interdependent self-construal was negatively associated with self-awareness and capacity for managing new situations, and was positively associated with sensitivity to others. Importantly, the latter associations were similar for both Dutch natives and immigrants, and the associations between acculturation and autonomy–connectedness were small and nonsignificant. Autonomy–connectedness, after controlling for self-construal and acculturation, explained a large amount of additional variance in anxiety (12.7%) and depression (14.1), and a medium amount of additional variance in drive for thinness (3.7%) and bulimia (4.8%). Autonomy–connectedness, thus, seems to be an important construct for people with a Western background, as well as for immigrants with a non-Western background.
