A Call to Action: Supporting Black Maternal and Infant Health Using the Collective Impact Model

This commentary advocates for a comprehensive approach to addressing the Black maternal and infant health crisis, utilizing the collective impact model with health equity at its center. Black women in the United States face alarmingly high rates of maternal morbidity and mortality compared to white women. Black women are twice as likely to have premature and low birthweight babies than white women, exposing both the expectant woman and child to various health risks. This crisis stems from systemic racism, implicit bias in healthcare, and a lack of targeted health communications for pregnant Black women. The urgency of this situation requires a bold and unified response through collaboration and coordination among healthcare providers, local and grassroots community-based organizations (CBOs), and digital health communicators. A comprehensive Black maternal and infant health campaign embedded within the collective impact model and led by a dedicated backbone organization would facilitate the coordination and involvement of diverse stakeholders. Central to these efforts should be the acknowledgment that systemic racism perpetuates health inequities. Consequently, any initiatives to improve health outcomes should prioritize health equity by valuing and incorporating Black women's perspectives. This involves crafting a responsive strategy and placing Black women at the forefront of content creation, program strategy, and evaluation. Through a collaborative effort involving healthcare partners, CBOs, and health communicators, we can have an impact far more significant than any single initiative. Immediate action is needed to dismantle systemic barriers and ensure every Black woman and infant receives the care and support they deserve. It is well-established that Black women face significantly higher rates of maternal morbidity and mortality compared to their white counterparts, indicative of a severe healthcare crisis. This opinion piece contributes to the discourse by proposing a comprehensive solution grounded in the collective impact model, which emphasizes collaboration and coordination across various stakeholders. This approach represents a shift from past siloed efforts, aiming to tackle the urgent issue of Black maternal and infant health with a multidisciplinary approach centered on health equity.

Evaluating Messaging on Prenatal Health Behaviors Using Social Media Data: Systematic Review

BACKGROUND

Social media platforms are increasingly being used to disseminate messages about prenatal health. However, to date, we lack a systematic assessment of how to evaluate the impact of official prenatal health messaging and campaigns using social media data.

OBJECTIVE

This study aims to review both the published and gray literature on how official prenatal health messaging and campaigns have been evaluated to date in terms of impact, acceptability, effectiveness, and unintended consequences, using social media data.

METHODS

A total of 6 electronic databases were searched and supplemented with the hand-searching of reference lists. Both published and gray literature were eligible for review. Data were analyzed using content analysis for descriptive data and a thematic synthesis approach to summarize qualitative evidence. A quality appraisal tool, designed especially for use with social media data, was used to assess the quality of the included articles.

RESULTS

A total of 11 studies were eligible for the review. The results showed that the most common prenatal health behavior targeted was alcohol consumption, and Facebook was the most commonly used source of social media data. The majority (n=6) of articles used social media data for descriptive purposes only. The results also showed that there was a lack of evaluation of the effectiveness, acceptability, and unintended consequences of the prenatal health message or campaign.

CONCLUSIONS

Social media is a widely used and potentially valuable resource for communicating and evaluating prenatal health messaging. However, this review suggests that there is a need to develop and adopt sound methodology on how to evaluate prenatal health messaging using social media data, for the benefit of future research and to inform public health practice.

Assessing Brigada Digital de Salud Audience Reach and Engagement: A Digital Community Health Worker Model to Address COVID-19 Misinformation in Spanish on Social Media

U.S. Spanish-speaking populations experienced gaps in timely COVID-19 information during the pandemic and disproportionate misinformation exposure. Brigada Digital de Salud was established to address these gaps with culturally tailored, Spanish-language COVID-19 information on social media. From 1 May 2021 to 30 April 2023, 495 Twitter, 275 Facebook, and 254 Instagram posts were published and amplified by 10 trained community health workers. A qualitative content analysis was performed to characterize the topics and formats of 251 posts. To assess reach and engagement, page analytics and advertising metrics for 287 posts were examined. Posts predominantly addressed vaccination (49.45%), infection risks (19.12%), and COVID-related scientific concepts (12.84%). Posts were educational (48.14%) and aimed to engage audiences (23.67%), promote resources (12.76%), and debunk misinformation (9.04%). Formats included images/text (55.40%), carousels (27.50%), and videos (17.10%). By 9 June 2023, 394 Facebook, 419 Instagram, and 228 Twitter followers included mainly women ages 24-54. Brigada Digital reached 386,910 people with 552,037 impressions and 96,868 engagements, including 11,292 likes, 15,240 comments/replies, 9718 shares/retweets, and 45,381 video play-throughs. The most engaging posts included videos with audio narration, healthcare providers, influencers, or music artists. This community-based model to engage Spanish-speaking audiences on social media with culturally aligned content to counter misinformation shows promise for addressing public health threats.

Preconception care knowledge and information delivery modes among adolescent girls and women: a scoping review

Purpose: The aim of this study was to conduct a scoping review of knowledge and information delivery modes related to preconception care (PCC) among adolescent girls and women Methods: A scoping review was performed on studies selected from five electronic databases (Cochrane Library, PubMed, Science Direct, CINAHL/EBSCO, and ProQuest), published between 2012 and 2022, with predetermined keywords and criteria. We included English-language research articles available in full text and excluded irrelevant articles.Results: This study included eight articles, comprising seven quantitative studies and one qualitative study conducted among adolescent girls and women. Five were from low- and middle-income countries and three were from high-income countries. The synthesized themes generated from the data were PCC knowledge and PCC information delivery modes and effectiveness. In general, adolescent girls and women were found to have basic PCC knowledge, including risk prevention and management and a healthy lifestyle, although more extensive knowledge was found in higher-income countries than in lower-income countries. The delivery modes of PCC information have grown from individual face-to-face conventional methods, which are used predominantly in lower-income countries, to more effective digital mass media.Conclusion: Globally, many women still have insufficient knowledge regarding PCC, as not all of them receive access to PCC information and support. PCC promotion efforts should be initiated earlier by involving a wider group of reproductive-age women and combining individual, in-group, face-to-face, and electronic delivery modes.
