Abstract
BACKGROUND An effective vaccine response is currently a critical issue in the control of COVID-19. Little is known about humoral and cellular immunity comparing protein-based vaccine with other types of vaccines. The relevance of basal immunity to antibody production is also unknown. METHODS Seventy-eight individuals were enrolled in the study. The primary outcome were the level of spike-specific antibodies and neutralizing antibodies measured by ELISA. Secondary measures included memory T cells and basal immunity estimated by flow cytometry and ELISA. Correlations for all parameters were calculated using the nonparametric Spearman correlation method. RESULTS We observed that two doses of mRNA-based Moderna mRNA-1273 (Moderna) vaccine produced the highest total spike-binding antibody and neutralizing ability against the wild-type (WT), Delta, and Omicron variants. The protein-based MVC-COV1901 (MVC) vaccine developed in Taiwan produced higher spike-binding antibodies against Delta and Omicron variants and neutralizing ability against the WT strain than the adenovirus-based AstraZeneca-Oxford AZD1222 (AZ) vaccine. Moderna and AZ vaccination produced more central memory T cells in PBMC than the MVC vaccine. However, the MVC vaccine had the lowest adverse effects compared to the Moderna and AZ vaccines. Surprisingly, the basal immunity represented by TNF-α, IFN-γ, and IL-2 prior to vaccination was negatively correlated with the production of spike-binding antibodies and neutralizing ability. CONCLUSION This study compared memory T cells, total spike-binding antibody levels, and neutralizing capacity against WT, Delta, and Omicron variants between the MVC vaccine and the widely used Moderna and AZ vaccines, which provides valuable information for future vaccine development strategies.

Abstract
Hedysari Radix (Hong Qi) is a commonly substituted material with similar functions to Astragali Radix (Huang Qi). However, it is still misused as Huang Qi, even though people know they are different species. This study aims to find evidence that Hong Qi can replace Huang Qi in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formulas used for immunomodulation. Therefore, we evaluated the immunomodulatory effects of both medicines on dendritic cells. The water extract of Hong Qi showed a more substantial immunomodulatory effect on dendritic cells in 500 μg/mL concentration compared to Huang Qi in the same dosage. Furthermore, we selected the 23 TCM formulas to investigate their immunomodulatory function when Huang Qi and Hong Qi alternated within a formula. Among them, 6 formulas containing Hong Qi demonstrated a better immunomodulatory effect on the dendritic cells than those containing Huang Qi. The other formulas containing Hong Qi showed an insignificantly different physiological impact from the original formulation. Therefore, based on the TCM theory and our experimental results, replacing Huang Qi with Hong Qi for a formula could be more suitable when the immunomodulatory effect or nourishing Qi is required.

Abstract
Hereditary Hemolytic Anemias (HHAs) are a rare but heterogeneous group of erythrocytic diseases, characterized by intrinsic cellular defects due to inherited genetic mutations. We investigated the efficacy of Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) in reducing the overall, diabetes-related, and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs)-related mortalities among patients with HHAs using a nationwide population database. In total, we identified 33,278 patients with HHAs and included 9,222 non-CHM and 9,222 CHM matched pairs after matching. The Cox proportional hazards model was used to compare the risk of mortality between non-CHM and CHM users. The Kaplan-Meier method and log-rank test were used to compare the cumulative incidence mortality between non-CHM and CHM users. The CHM prescription patterns were presented by the association rules and network analyses, respectively. CHM users showed significant reduced risks for of overall (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR]: 0.67, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.61-0.73, p < 0.001), diabetes-related (aHR: 0.57, 95% CI: 0.40-0.82, p < 0.001), and CVDs-related (aHR: 0.59, 95% CI: 0.49-0.72, p < 0.001) mortalities compared with non-CHM users. Two CHM clusters are frequently used to treat Taiwanese patients with HHAs. Cluster 1 is composed of six CHMs: Bei-Mu (BM; Fritillaria cirrhosa D.Don), Gan-Cao (GC; Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch.), Hai-Piao-Xiao (HPX; Endoconcha Sepiae), Jie-Geng (JG; Platycodon grandiflorus (Jacq.) A.DC.), Yu-Xing-Cao (YXC; Houttuynia cordata Thunb.), and Xin-Yi-Qing-Fei-Tang (XYQFT). Cluster 2 is composed of two CHMs, Dang-Gui (DG; Angelica sinensis (Oliv.) Diels) and Huang-Qi (HQi; Astragalus membranaceus (Fisch.) Bunge). Further randomized clinical trials are essential to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of above CHM products and to eliminate potential biases in the current retrospective study.

Abstract
Background Cervical cancer is one of the most common cancers in Taiwan. Some patients take Chinese herbal medicine (CHM). However, very few current studies have ascertained the usage and efficacy of CHM in patients with cervical cancer. The aim of this study was to investigate the benefits of complementary CHM among patients with cervical cancer in Taiwan. Methods We included the newly diagnosed cervical cancer patients who were registered in the Taiwanese Registry for Catastrophic Illness Patients Database between 2000 and 2010. The end of follow-up period was December 31, 2011. Patients who were less than 20 years old, had missing information for age, withdrew from the National Health Insurance (NHI) program during the follow-up period, or only received other TCM interventions such as acupuncture or tuina massage were excluded from our study. After performing 1:1 frequency matching by age and index date, we enrolled 7521 patients in both CHM and non-CHM user groups. A Cox regression model was used to compare the hazard ratios (HRs) of the risk of mortality. The Kaplan-Meier curve was used to compare the difference in survival time. Results According to the Cox hazard ratio model mutually adjusted for CHM use, age, comorbidity, treatment, and chemotherapeutic agents used, we found that CHM users had a lower hazard ratio of mortality risk (adjusted HR = 0.29, 95%CI = 0.27-0.31). The survival probability was higher for patients in the CHM group. Bai-Hua-She-She-Cao (Herba Oldenlandiae, synonym Herba Hedyotis diffusae) and Jia-Wei-Xiao-Yao-San were the most commonly prescribed single herb and Chinese herbal formula, respectively. Conclusions Adjunctive CHM may have positive effects of reducing mortality rate and improving the survival probability for cervical cancer patients. Further evidence-based pharmacological investigations and clinical trials are warranted to confirm the findings in our study.

Abstract
Aim of the Study: The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that Chinese herbal medicine is beneficial for survival improvement in patients with multiple myeloma. Materials and Methods: We performed a 1:1 propensity score–matched cohort study to analyze patients with multiple myeloma diagnosed between January 1, 2002, and December 31, 2012, through the Taiwanese National Health Insurance Research Database. Patients who received Chinese herbal medicine therapy from the initial date of diagnosis of multiple myeloma to December 31, 2012, were included in the Chinese herbal medicine group. Patients who were not treated with Chinese herbal medicine during the same interval were categorized in the non-Chinese herbal medicine group. A Cox regression model was used to adjust for sex, age, comorbidities, and drug use. Hazard ratios were also compared between the 2 groups. Results: A total of 312 patients were identified after 1:1 propensity score matching. The patients had similar basic characteristics. A better survival status was found in the Chinese herbal medicine cohort (log-rank test, P < .0001). Finally, 49 patients in the Chinese herbal medicine cohort and 96 patients in the non-Chinese herbal medicine cohort died (adjusted hazard ratio = 0.35, 95% confidence interval = 0.24-0.51). The effect of survival improvement from Chinese herbal medicine in patients with multiple myeloma could be observed when prescriptions had the duration of ≥30 days. Conclusions: Our results showed that patients with multiple myeloma could benefit from Chinese herbal medicine treatment, which could improve the survival rate in Taiwan. The findings offer important ideas for further study.
