Abstract
Background. There is a need for the occupational therapy profession to respond to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada Calls to Action and work towards supporting the health and well-being of Indigenous Peoples. Purpose. (1) To determine the knowledge gaps of occupational therapists about Indigenous health and (2) to create recommendations to address identified gaps and inform responses from the profession. Method. A national needs survey was created and distributed to occupational therapists across Canada to determine the knowledge of occupational therapists about Indigenous health. Survey results were analyzed using thematic analysis and descriptive statistics. Findings. Data collected from 364 survey responses informed six distinct themes representing knowledge gaps of occupational therapists related to Indigenous health as follows: lack of foundational knowledge, power relations, lifelong learner, need for appropriate tools/approaches, respectful collaboration, and environmental influences. Implications. The project offers insight into the role of the occupational therapy profession in the process of reconciliation. Insights are focused on decolonizing occupational therapy practice, building trusting relationships with Indigenous Peoples, and the provision of appropriate training for occupational therapists to engage in culturally safer practices.

Abstract
PURPOSE To develop an online self-management program for individuals with recent lower limb loss, called Self-Management for Amputee Rehabilitation using Technology (SMART). MATERIALS AND METHODS We used the Intervention Mapping Framework as a blueprint and involved stakeholders throughout the process. A six-step study was conducted including (1) needs assessment using interviews, (2) translating needs to content, (3) applying the content into a prototype using theory-based methods, (4) a usability assessment using think-aloud cognitive testing, (5) planning for future adoption and implementation, and (6) assessing feasibility using mixed-methods to generate a plan to assess the effectiveness on health-outcomes in a randomized controlled trial. RESULTS Following interviews with healthcare professionals (n = 31) and people with lower limb loss (n = 26), we determined the content of a prototype version. We then tested usability (n = 9) and feasibility (n = 12) by recruiting individuals with lower limb loss from different pools. We modified SMART to be assessed in a randomized controlled trial. SMART is a six-week online program with weekly contact of a peer mentor with lower limb loss who supported patients with goal-setting and action-planning. CONCLUSIONS Intervention mapping facilitated the systematic development of SMART. SMART may improve health outcomes, but this would need to be confirmed in future studies.Implications for rehabilitationLearning new coping strategies and habits are essential after lower limb loss.Given the limitations and inaccessibility of educational and rehabilitation programs, online self-management education can assist patients in their recovery.Self-Management for Amputee Rehabilitation using Technology (SMART) has the potential to augment the self-management behaviors in individuals with lower limb loss through an improvement in access to educational content, skill-based videos, and support of a peer.

Abstract
Background. There is a lack of knowledge on the scope and nature of the research by faculty members in occupational science (OS) and/or occupational therapy (OT) programs in Canada. Purpose. To describe the research activities of faculty members in these programs and directions. Method. A cross-sectional survey was distributed to 173 faculty members across all 14 Canadian OT that addressed: 1) research topics and methods, 2) populations, and 3) funding. Findings. Based on respondents (N = 121), research is focused on a range of topics and populations with most conducting qualitative research. Many conduct research examining the effectiveness of interventions, with few respondents focused on OS research. Federal and provincial grants agencies were the largest source of funding. Implications. Research topics studied were not always proportional to practice although emerging areas were being investigated that can expand the evidence base and scope of practice. Despite limited occupation-specific funding options, respondents were accessing funding from varied sources. Collaborations among faculty members, clinicians, and individuals with lived experience can create priorities for future OS and/or OT research in Canada.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic altered the health profession's education. Educational activities were shifted to online, and clinical placements were compromised in certain countries. A mixed-methods study included 17 undergraduates undergoing a mental health placement. The first 3 weeks of clinical placement applied online case-based learning in written and in video format. The last 2 weeks involved hybrid remote and physical onsite clinical placement. SPICES model utilizing various active learning activities, case studies and client attendance, facilitator engagement, discussion and feedback were implemented. A self-administered System Usability Scale (SUS), e-learning preference level, focus group discussion, and reflective writing was conducted at the end of each week and the students' final marks were compared with the past cohort who attended conventional physical clinical placement. Two-way mixed ANOVA indicates no significant interaction was found on the SUS (p = 0.062, ηp2 = 0.062) and preference scores (p = 0.285, ηp2 = 0.079) according to week and practical site. There was no significant difference in the final mark among the online and onsite placement of the current cohort (p = 0.350, d = 0.47). The current cohort reported better marks than the previous cohort who attended conventional placement (p = 0.006, d = 0.99). Qualitative findings show positive responses where online activities have minimal restriction on the learning process. This innovative approach is acceptable for substituting conventional clinical learning during this restricted situation.

Abstract
La recherche est une occupation propice à l’émergence d’enjeux éthiques, en outre parce qu’elle est liée à des conflits d’intérêts parfois difficiles à gérer et se réalise dans un contexte hautement compétitif qui valorise la performance. Alors que les enjeux éthiques de la pratique clinique de l’ergothérapie commencent à être documentés, les enjeux éthiques vécus par les chercheurs en ergothérapie et les moyens qu’ils utilisent pour gérer ces enjeux ne sont quasiment pas documentés. Cet article présente les résultats d’une étude qualitative qui a documenté les moyens (macro, méso et micro) qui sont proposés par des ergothérapeutes-chercheurs pour résoudre les enjeux éthiques de la recherche. Onze ergothérapeutes (n=11) ont participé à la recherche et partagent les moyens qu’ils utilisent ou envisagent pour gérer les enjeux éthiques de la recherche qu’ils vivent comme chercheur. Les moyens proposés par les ergothérapeutes rejoignent plusieurs moyens suggérés dans les écrits, quoique certains moyens proposés dans les écrits relatifs à la relation à établir avec les participants de recherche soient peu abordés par les participants, ce qui est surprenant compte tenu des valeurs humanistes au fondement de la profession d’ergothérapeute. Au final, cet article qui présente une synthèse à la fois des moyens répertoriés dans des écrits pour résoudre les enjeux éthiques de la recherche et ceux discutés par les participants vise à habiliter l’ergothérapeute-chercheur à résoudre les enjeux que pose la recherche académique tout en restant fidèle aux valeurs de la profession.

Abstract
Background Most people with spinal cord injury will develop secondary complications with potentially devastating consequences. Self-management is a key prevention strategy for averting the development of secondary complications and their recurrence. Several studies have shown that self-management programs improve self-management behaviors and health outcomes in individuals living with chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes, hypertension, and arthritis. Given the burgeoning health care costs related to secondary complications, we developed an alternative electronic health–based implementation to facilitate the development of self-management skills among people with spinal cord injury. Objective This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of a self-management app in spinal cord injury populations. The primary outcome is attainment of self-selected, self-management goals. Secondary outcomes include increases in general and self-management self-efficacy and reductions in self-reported health events, health care utilization, and secondary complications related to spinal cord injury. This study also aims to explore how the intervention was implemented and how the app was experienced by end users. Methods This study will employ a mix of qualitative and quantitative methods. The quantitative portion of our study will involve a rater-blinded, randomized controlled trial with a stepped wedge design (ie, delayed intervention control group). The primary outcome is successful goal attainment, and secondary outcomes include increases in self-efficacy and reductions in self-reported health events, health care utilization, and secondary conditions related to spinal cord injury. The qualitative portion will consist of semistructured interviews with a subsample of the participants. Results We expect that the mobile self-management app will help people with spinal cord injury to attain their self-management goals, improve their self-efficacy, reduce secondary complications, and decrease health care utilization. Conclusions If the results are positive, this study will produce credible new knowledge describing multiple outcomes that people with spinal cord injury realize from an app-based self-management intervention and support its implementation in clinical practice. Abstract
AIM To explore the use ofthe Ecological Validity Model as a guiding framework in the provision of a culturally-sensitive assistive technology (AT) intervention for community older people. METHODS Twenty-seven Hispanic adultsaged 70 years and older, and four individuals with expertisein AT participated in a concurrent nested mixed method study where the quantitative method (content validity ratio exercise) was embedded in the dominant qualitative method (focus groups). RESULTS Findings informedthe development of the Assistive Technology Life Enhancement Program (ATLEP); an intervention consisting of seven modules addressing AT devices with culturally sensitive elements. CONCLUSIONS The Ecological Validity Model, as well as, the input from older adults were both effective methodological strategies in tailoring the ATLEP intervention to the needs and circumstances of community-living older people living in Puerto Rico.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the locally tailored and individualized home-based rehabilitation (HBR) program developed using the community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach, in terms of perceived health in patients with different levels of social engagement, and to explore the perceived facilitators and barriers to rehabilitation. METHOD A concurrent mixed-method design was employed. Four patients participated in the combined therapist- and self-delivered HBR program for 5 months. The perceived health outcomes were quantitatively assessed at baseline, after the therapist-delivered intervention period, and at 1 and 3 months after the self-delivered intervention period. Then, in-depth individual interviews were conducted to explore the facilitators and barriers to rehabilitation. RESULTS The perceived health of patients who were fully or partially engaged in society was increased during the therapist-delivered intervention period, and maintained the increased level during the self-delivered intervention period, whereas that of patients who were rarely or not engaged dropped again to lower than the baseline. These results were caused by differentiated facilitators and barriers to rehabilitation depending on the level of social engagement. CONCLUSIONS Applying tailored strategies to patients with differing levels of social engagement is recommended to further optimize the local relevance of the HBR program. Implications for rehabilitation A community-based participatory research approach can provide an opportunity to enhance local relevance through community-academic partnerships, in developing a home-based rehabilitation (HBR) program for the people with disabilities. For community therapists, enhancing the local relevance of the HBR program, applying tailored strategies to patients with differing levels of social engagement is recommended because the perceived health of the HBR program can be different owing to differing perceived facilitators and barriers to rehabilitation, depending on the level of social engagement. For patients with rare or no engagement in society, satisfying their need for interaction with the therapists and helping them cope with their wrong belief about the possibility of their recovery is important to encourage behavioral change and perceived physical improvements.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The greatest threat to human well-being in this century is climate change and related global issues. PURPOSE We examined the effectiveness of the Modified Instrumentalism in Occupational Therapy model as a framework for facilitating occupational behaviour change to address climate change and related issues. METHOD Eleven individuals participated in this mixed-methods single-subject-design study. Data were gathered using the Modified Assessment and Intervention Instrument for Instrumentalism in Occupational Therapy and Daily Occupational Inventories. Quantitative data were analyzed using two- and three-standard deviation band methods. Qualitative data were analyzed using heuristic phenomenological procedures. FINDINGS Occupational performance changed for five participants. Participants' feelings shifted from frustration and helplessness to empowerment and a desire for action. They felt empowered to find occupation-based solutions to the global issues. IMPLICATIONS Occupation-based interventions that increase personal awareness of the connection between occupational performance and global issues could empower people to be agents for action to ameliorate the issues.

Abstract
Introduction The aim of this article is to describe and explain a new method for integrating theory and evidence that enables practitioners to translate evidence into action applied in their practice. Method A new multiple methods procedure called the Integrating Theory, Evidence and Action method is described. It is a mixed method that progresses through seven distinct steps: clinical question, framework, identification, deconstruction, analysis, reconstruction, and transfer/utilization. An example of using this method to review evidence around occupational therapy with people recovering from alcohol misuse and/or abuse is provided. Findings This method highlights the importance of theory, tests the empirical strength of theories, includes diverse forms of evidence, and encourages the integration of knowledge within clinical practice. Conclusion The Integrating Theory, Evidence and Action method is accessible and useful to practitioners and will support their efforts to make their practice evidence based. Current methods of evidence-based practice focus mostly on research evidence (particularly quantitative evidence); however, research is only one of the ways of knowing that practitioners draw upon to guide their practice. This method enables occupational therapists to integrate theory, evidence, and practice in a coherent and translatable way.

Abstract
In this pilot study, we explored the difference in the use of occupational competence strategies for daily participation between more active and less active older Hispanic women. Twenty-nine women who were 70 and older and lived alone participated in this study. We used a mixed-methods design by which the principal investigator administered a tool to measure participation restrictions during the quantitative phase and conducted in-depth interviews with a subsample in the qualitative phase. More active women predominantly used transportation resources, emotional social support, and spirituality to support participation in life activities. Less active women used more practical social support, assistive technology, and environmental modifications. Personal facilitators seemed to directly modify these strategies. These results suggest that older women with different activity levels use distinct internal and external resources to maintain or enhance daily participation. Future studies should explore whether these resources remain consistent across gender, living status, and ethnicity.

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to answer the question ‘How do people who have experienced psychosis describe their engagement in activities of daily living and occupations?’ Procedures: A qualitative metasynthesis was undertaken on nine studies (encompassing 73 participants) published in occupational therapy literature. Only studies that had used individual qualitative interviews were included to highlight lived experience on a personal level. The quality of the evidence was assessed across all studies and found to be generally high. Findings: Four overarching themes across the nine studies were identified: my emotions and identity; my own health and wellbeing; my relationships with family, friends and community; and my activities and occupations. The overarching themes are not intended to be considered categorically, as they all influence and interact with each other. Conclusion and relevance: There is considerable synchronicity between the experiences of people who have experienced psychosis and the values of the profession. A client's meaningful engagement in activities and occupation is evidence towards how therapists provide authentic, respectful and effective support to these clients, in a manner that meets their needs as individuals.
