Abstract
AIM The genetic variation in the CD14 rs2569190 promoter region contributes to the susceptibility of developing periodontitis. Since, CD14 gene polymorphism studies among various ethnic populations have produced conflicting results, the present study was designed to unearth the association between the CD14 rs2569190 gene polymorphism and generalized chronic periodontitis (GCP) in a South Indian population of Tamil ethnicity. METHODS Polymorphisms in the CD14 rs2569190 promoter region were analyzed in 96 subjects who were periodontally healthy and 96 patients with GCP. DNA extracted from peripheral venous blood was genotyped by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis. One-way analysis of variance, Chi-square testing, and logistic regression analysis were used to test association between GCP and the CD14 rs2569190 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP). RESULTS The distribution of the CD14 rs2569190 genotypes and allele frequencies showed significant differences between the test and control groups. Prevalence of the polymorphic TT genotype and T allele of the CD14 rs2569190 were significantly increased in GCP patients when compared with healthy controls. CONCLUSION The results of the present study suggest that the T allele and the TT genotype of the rs2569190 SNP in the promoter region of the CD14 gene are associated with GCP in a South Indian population of Tamil ethnicity.

Abstract
Bacterial deposits, smoking, and host genetic factors play a major role in an individual’s predisposition to periodontitis. Bacterial components are recognized by CD14 and toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), resulting in a NF-κB-based inflammatory response. We hypothesized that functional CD14 and TLR4 polymorphisms contribute to periodontitis susceptibility. We aimed to investigate the occurrence of CD14-260C>T, TLR4 299Asp>Gly, and 399Thr>Ile gene polymorphisms in adult periodontititis. DNA was collected from 100 patients with severe periodontitis and from 99 periodontally healthy controls. The gene polymorphisms were determined by the PCR technique. The presence of the periodontal pathogens Porphyromonas gingivalis and Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, and whether the subjects smoked, was included in the analyses. The CD14-260T/T genotype was found in 34.0% of periodontitis patients and in 20.2% of controls. Logistic regression analysis adjusted for gender, age, smoking, and prevalence of P. gingivalis and A. actinomycetemcomitans showed an association between the CD14-260T/T genotype and periodontitis (P = 0.004, OR 3.0, 95% CI 1.4–6.9). We conclude that the CD14-260T/T genotype contributes to the susceptibility to severe periodontitis in Dutch Caucasians.

Abstract
Pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) constitute a pivotal arm of innate immunity. Many studies investigated the association between PRRs polymorphisms and periodontitis risk, which showed inconclusive results. The aim of the meta-analysis was to evaluate the precise association between five widely-evaluated polymorphisms (CD14 -260C/T (rs2569190), Toll-like receptor (TLR) 2 2408G/A (rs5743708), TLR4 896A/G (rs4986790), TLR4 1196C/T (rs4986791), mannose-binding lectin (MBL) codon 54 (rs1800450)) within the PRRs and susceptibility to either chronic (CP) or aggressive periodontitis (AgP). Overall, no significant association was found for the PRRs polymorphisms with either CP or AgP. In the subgroup analyses, TLR4 896G and 1196T alleles yielded a 32% (OR=1.32, 95% CI: 1.04-1.68) and a 37% increased CP risk (OR=1.37, 95% CI: 1.05-1.80) in Caucasians, respectively. Further stratified analyses revealed links between CD14, MBL2 polymorphisms and the severity of CP. This meta-analysis suggested that the periodontitis susceptibility was partly controlled by PRRs polymorphisms involved in the innate immunity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES CD14 is a causative gene for periodontitis. However, conflicting results had been achieved when evaluating the associations between CD14 -159 C>T and periodontitis, which warranted us to conduct this meta-analysis. MATERIAL AND METHODS A meta-analysis based on eight relevant case-control studies was conducted to address this issue. Odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were applied to test the association. The statistical heterogeneity across studies was assessed by Chi-square-based Q-test. RESULTS Retrieved studies regarding CD14 -159 C>T and periodontitis susceptibility were put into the final analysis. Overall and subgroup analyses were performed. Finally, we did not find that this polymorphism could contribute to modified risk of periodontitis or in stratified analysis by ethnicity and type of disease. However, this polymorphism was associated with decreased risk of mild to moderate periodontitis (TT vs. CC, OR = 0.42, 95% CI = 0.21-0.81, CT/CC vs. TT, OR = 1.91, 95% CI = 1.09-3.35) but not severe periodontitis. CONCLUSION The present meta-analysis provided confirmative evidence that CD14 -159 C>T was involved in the development of periodontitis.

Abstract
Background Periodontitis is a common disease that affects the periodontal tissue supporting the teeth. This disease is attributed to multiple risk factors, including diabetes, cigarette smoking, alcohol, pathogenic microorganisms, genetics and others. Human beta-defensin-1 (hBD-1) is a cationic antimicrobial peptide with cysteine-rich ß-sheets and broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. CD14 is a protein involved in the detection of bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and has also been associated with periodontitis. This study investigates the single nucleotide polymorphic (SNP) region, -1654(V38I), of the human beta-defensin-1 (hBD-1) gene as well as the -159 region of the CD14 gene in subjects with chronic periodontitis. Methods Blood samples from periodontally healthy subjects and periodontitis patients were obtained. DNA was extracted from the blood and was used to perform restriction digest at the polymorphic G1654A site of DEFB1 with the enzyme HincII. The polymorphic site 159TT of CD14 was digested with the enzyme AvaII. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was performed on soluble samples to determine the protein expressions. Results The control and patient groups expressed 35% and 38% 1654 A/A genotype of DEFB1, respectively. The A allele frequency of the control group was 40%, while the patient blood group was 54%. The mean hBD-1 protein levels of the control and patient samples were 102.83 pg/mL and 252.09 pg/mL, respectively. The genotype distribution of CD14 in healthy subjects was 16% for C/C, 26% for T/T and 58% for C/T. The genotype frequencies of CD14 in periodontitis patients were 10% for C/C, 43% for T/T and 47% for C/T. The CD14 protein expression determined by ELISA showed a mean protein level of the control samples at 76.28ng/mL and the patient blood samples at 179.27ng/mL with a p value of 0.001. Our study demonstrated that patients suffering from chronic periodontitis present more commonly with the 1654A/A genotype on the DEFB1 gene and the 159T/T genotype on the CD14 gene. Conclusions This study purely investigated the association between periodontitis and one polymorphic site on both DEFB1 and CD14 gene, with the purpose of expanding knowledge for the future development in diagnostic markers or therapeutic interventions to combat this disease.

Abstract
UNLABELLED BACKGROUD AND OBJECTIVE: Genetic factors may influence the colonization of pathogenic bacteria, therefore increasing the risk for the initiation and development of periodontal disease. The present study was carried out to investigate the association of CD14-260 polymorphisms, subgingival microbiota, and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) cytokine levels with cyclosporine A (CsA)-induced gingival overgrowth (GO) in renal transplant patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 204 patients were dichotomized into two groups: 124 with GO and 80 without GO. The CD14-260 polymorphisms were measured using an allele-specific PCR method. The levels of periodontal pathogens were determined by real-time PCR of subgingival samples. GCF levels of IL-1β and sCD14 were detected by ELISA. RESULTS The frequency of CD14-260 genotype CT + TT was found to be similar in both groups. Patients with GO presented increased prevalence of Pg, Td, and Tf (red complex) and significantly higher levels of interleukin -1β than those without GO. Patients with GO carrying CT + TT genotypes were found to have higher frequencies of Pg, Td, and Tf than those carrying the CC genotype. Furthermore, in the presence of red complex, CT + TT genotypes were associated with higher interleukin -1β levels and severe GO. Multiple logistic regression analysis demonstrated that the severity of GO is not dependent on age, gender and pharmacological variables, being only associated with CD14-260 genotype and red complex periodontopathogens. CONCLUSION No association between CD14-260 polymorphisms and the prevalence of GO was revealed in renal transplant patients administered CsA. However, CD14-260 CT + TT genotypes are associated with the prevalence of red complex periodontopathogens in patients with GO, and may thus play some role in the development of severe CsA-induced GO.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Periodontitis is a multifactorial disease influenced partly by genetics. Activation of pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) can lead to the up-regulation of inflammatory pathways, resulting in periodontal tissue destruction. Hence, functional polymorphisms located in PRRs can explain differences in host susceptibility to periodontitis. This study investigated single nucleotide polymorphisms of PRRs including toll-like receptor (TLR)2 (G2408A), TLR4 (A896G), TLR9 (T1486C), TLR9 (T1237C) and CD14 (C260T) in patients with chronic periodontitis and in periodontally healthy subjects. METHODS One-hundred and fourteen patients with chronic periodontitis and 77 periodontally healthy subjects were genotyped using TaqMan® allelic discrimination assays. Fisher's exact test and chi-square analyses were performed to compare genotype and allele frequencies. RESULTS The frequency of subjects with the CC genotype of CD14 (C260T) (24.6% in the chronic periodontitis group vs. 13% in the periodontally healthy group) and those expressing the T allele of CD14 (C260T) (CT and TT) (75.4% in the chronic periodontitis group vs. 87% in the periodontally healthy group) was statistically different among groups (p = 0.04). Homozygocity for the C allele of the CD14 (C260T) polymorphism (CC) was associated with a two--fold increased susceptibility to periodontitis (p = 0.04; odds ratio, 2.49; 95% confidence interval, 1.06-6.26). Individuals with the CC genotype of TLR9 (T1486C) (14.9% in the chronic periodontitis group vs. 28.6% in the periodontally healthy group) and those expressing the T allele of TLR9 (T1486C) (CT and TT) (85.1% in the chronic periodontitis group vs. 71.4% in the periodontally healthy group) were also significantly differently distributed between groups without adjustment (p = 0.03). Further analysis of nonsmokers revealed a significant difference in the distribution of genotypes between groups for TLR9 (T1486C; p = 0.017) and CD14 (C260T; p = 0.03), polymorphisms again without adjustment. CONCLUSION The CC genotype of CD14 (C260T) is related to susceptibility to chronic periodontitis in Caucasians. In addition, differences observed in the distribution of TLR9 (T1486C) genotypes between groups warrant further investigation.

Abstract
Monocyte and macrophage markers are among the most highly overexpressed genes in cpk mouse kidneys with severely progressive renal cystic disease. We show here that one of these markers, CD14, is abnormally transcribed, activated and shed in cystic kidneys. However, these abnormalities were not associated with an increased number of interstitial CD14-positive mononuclear cells. Instead, we found that most non-cystic and cystic renal tubular epithelia were CD14-positive; even distal nephron-derived principal cells. Cd14 was significantly overexpressed in the kidneys of 5-day-old cpk mice and further increased as the disease progressed. In the cpk model with variable rates of cystic kidney enlargement (due to an intercross of two distinct genetic backgrounds), Cd14 expression positively correlated with kidney volume, exceeding the correlation with MCP-1, an established marker of autosomal-dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). In 16 patients with ADPKD, the baseline urinary CD14 level showed some tendency to correlate with the 2-year change in total kidney volume; however, the tendency was not statistically significant. But the association was significant when the analysis was confined to males. Clearly more studies need to be done to evaluate the utility of CD14 as a marker for outcomes in ADPKD.

Abstract
We aimed to conduct a review of the literature for gene polymorphisms associated with chronic periodontitis (CP) susceptibility. A comprehensive search of the literature in English was performed using the keywords: periodontitis, periodontal disease, combined with the words genes, mutation, or polymorphism. Candidate gene polymorphism studies with a case-control design and reported genotype frequencies in CP patients were searched and reviewed. There is growing evidence that polymorphisms in the IL1, IL6, IL10, vitamin D receptor, and CD14 genes may be associated with CP in certain populations. However, carriage rates of the rare (R)-allele of any polymorphism varied considerably among studies and most of the studies appeared under-powered and did not correct for other risk factors. Larger cohorts, well-defined phenotypes, control for other risk factors, and analysis of multiple genes and polymorphisms within the same pathway are needed to get a more comprehensive insight into the contribution of gene polymorphisms in CP.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A genome-association study is a powerful tool for analyzing small gene effects in complex diseases such as chronic periodontitis (CP), although the cost of analysis is prohibitive. We designed a study using the DNA pooling method, which could be a breakthrough in lowering such costs. This study was conducted to assess the genetic association in severe CP in a Japanese population. METHODS We adopted a DNA pooling method by genotyping 454 densely spaced microsatellite (MS) markers in chromosome 19 as a pilot study, with the possibility of future use in a whole-genome study. This can reduce the high cost and technical burden, which is generally unavoidable in a genomic association study. Pooled DNA samples from 300 case subjects, 300 control subjects, and 200 systemically healthy subjects were screened by genotyping MS markers. The case-control association in the candidate region was analyzed by individual typing of MS and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). RESULTS The single MS marker allele 17 of 1902G31 was isolated in association with severe CP (P = 0.0012 for 2 x 2; P <0.046 for 2 x m, where m refers to the number of polymorphic alleles observed in a population). No other SNP or MS polymorphism hypothesized to affect biologic functions in the critical region was found in the linkage disequilibrium block analysis. CONCLUSIONS We efficiently isolated the susceptible locus for severe CP in chromosome 19 and identified a useful marker to evaluate the risk for disease. This approach can be applied to a whole-genome study in severe CP.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS CD14 is a co-receptor involved in the recognition of Gram-negative and positive bacteria. Infections are known to influence serum sCD14 levels, and CD14 gene promoter polymorphism (CD14 C-260T) has been reported to be associated with many infectious diseases. Our aim was to investigate whether serum sCD14 concentration is associated with periodontal infection and the CD14(-260) genotype. SUBJECTS AND METHODS The periodontal status of 56 subjects with chronic periodontitis and 28 controls was clinically examined. Serum sCD14 concentration was analyzed using ELISA and CD14(-260) genotype using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). RESULTS The mean concentration of sCD14 in serum was significantly higher in subjects with periodontitis than in control subjects (4.9 microg ml(-1)vs 3.8 microg ml(-1), P < 0.001). Serum sCD14 concentration associated significantly with the extent of advanced periodontal disease. In a regression analysis including both subject groups, the CD14(-260) genotype was a significant determinant for serum sCD14 concentration. After stratification by periodontal health status (periodontitis vs controls), the influence of the CD14(-260) genotype on serum sCD14 concentration was seen only in the control group. CONCLUSIONS Periodontal infection is associated with the serum concentration of sCD14. Moderate to severe periodontal infection overshadows the influence of the genotype on serum sCD14 concentration.

Abstract
Several reports have demonstrated a possible association of periodontal infections with coronary heart disease (CHD) by elevated antibody titre to periodontopathic bacteria in CHD patients compared with non-diseased controls. Although each periodontopathic bacterium may vary in virulence for periodontitis and atherosclerosis, antibody response to multiple bacteria in CHD patients has not been understood fully. Therefore, serum levels of antibody to 12 periodontopathic bacteria together with other atherosclerotic risk markers were compared among 51 patients with CHD, 55 patients with moderate to severe chronic periodontitis and 37 healthy individuals. The antibody response was the most prevalent for Porphyromonas gingivalis, a major causative organism, in CHD as well as periodontitis patients. However, antibody positivity was different between CHD and periodontitis if the response was analysed for two different strains of P. gingivalis, namely FDC381 and Su63. While periodontitis patients were positive for both P. gingivalis FDC381 and Su63, a high frequency of antibody positivity for P. gingivalis Su63 but not for FDC381 was observed in CHD patients. The results indicate that the presence of particular periodontopathic bacteria with high virulence may affect atherogenesis. Identifying the virulence factors of P. gingivalis Su63 may gain insight into the new therapeutic modality for infection-induced deterioration of atherosclerosis.

Abstract
AIM To compare the frequencies of cytokine and receptor molecule genotypes in patients with chronic periodontitis with the corresponding frequencies in a reference population and to study the relationship between periodontal disease severity and polymorphisms in the studied genes. SUBJECTS AND METHODS CD14, IL-6, TNF-alpha, IL-10, IL-1alpha, IL-1beta, and TLR-4 polymorphisms of 51 periodontitis patients were studied using polymerase chain reaction. The genotype frequencies in the periodontitis patients and a reference population (n=178) were compared. Probing pocket depth (PD), periodontal attachment level (AL), and alveolar bone level (BL) were related to the genotypes. RESULTS No statistically significant differences could be found between the frequencies of the cytokine genotypes in the periodontitis patients and in the reference group. The extent of periodontal disease was higher in subjects with the T-containing genotype of CD14(-260) and the GG genotype of IL-6(-174) when compared with the extent in the rest of the group. Subjects carrying the composite genotype of the above two were most severely affected by periodontal disease. CONCLUSION According to the present results, an evident association exists between the carriage of the T-containing genotype of CD14(-260) and the GG genotype of IL-6(-174) and the extent periodontal disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study whether there is an association between the frequency of functional polymorphisms in the toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and cluster differentiation 14 (CD14) genes and periodontitis. METHODOLOGY Genotyping for the TLR4 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) Asp299Gly, Thr399Ile and the CD14 SNPs -159 and -1359 was completed for subjects with periodontal disease compared with control subjects. Two disease populations were investigated: 73 subjects with aggressive periodontitis (AgP; 28 males, 45 females) and 95 males with chronic periodontitis (CP). The TLR4 and CD14 polymorphisms were determined using SNaPshot primer extension with capillary electrophoresis. Comparison of allele and genotype frequencies for each polymorphism was by Fisher's exact test or chi2 analysis. RESULTS The TLR4 Asp299Gly genotype was present in a significantly (p=0.026) lower proportion of AgP subjects (5.5%) compared with control subjects (16.3%). The unadjusted odds ratio for the Asp299Gly genotype to be associated with AgP was 0.30, 95% confidence interval 0.10-0.91. No differences were found in the prevalence of the TLR4 Asp299Gly genotype in men with CP (18.9%) compared with an age-matched control group with no evidence of periodontitis (17%). In addition, there was no difference in the distribution of the CD14 polymorphisms in either the AgP or CP populations studied compared with controls. CONCLUSION It is concluded that in West European Caucasians, the Asp299Gly TLR4 gene polymorphism is associated with a decreased risk of AgP but not CP. Promoter polymorphisms of the CD14 gene, however, did not influence susceptibility to inflammatory periodontitis in the population cohorts studied.

Abstract
AIM To review the association between genetic variability and the inflammatory response induced by periodontal infection. MATERIAL AND METHODS A search of MEDLINE-PubMed was performed from January 2000 up to and including March 2005. The search included all types of publications, published in English without other limitations. The following search terms were used: "cytokine polymorphism", "gene polymorphism", "periodontitis", "gingivitis", "inflammation" and "host-response". The papers resulting from the above search were used as an additional source for relevant articles. RESULTS Genetic variability was examined for the correlation to clinical indicators of inflammation such as bleeding on probing (BOP), gingival inflammation, cytokine in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and cytokine production by inflammatory cells. According to the current literature, most of the studies found no association between genetic variability and BOP, gingival inflammation or cytokine concentrations in the GCF. These studies were hampered by inappropriate study designs and the use of inflammatory parameters as secondary rather than primary outcome variables. The data suggest that the production of inflammatory mediators by inflammatory cells may be affected by different genetic traits but further studies are needed in order to establish this association. CONCLUSIONS To date, there is no clear correlation between any of the gene polymorphisms and clinical indicators of inflammation. The powering of studies to reveal associations between single or multiple nucleotide polymorphisms and inflammatory parameters will need to involve a much larger number of subjects than were used in the past. The available data (including the interleukin-1 composite genotype) do not currently support the utility of such tests in the diagnosis and prognostic assessments of periodontal diseases.

Abstract
AIM To review the literature for genetic risk factors associated with periodontitis. METHODS Computerized search of the literature in English using key words: Periodontitis; Genes; Mutation; Polymorphism; Risk. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS Mutations in the cathepsin C gene (CTSC) have been identified as causal for the Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome (PLS), which includes prepubertal periodontitis (PP). Some CTSC mutations are causal for PP without PLS. No relationship has been demonstrated between CTSC mutations and other forms of periodontitis. Genetic polymorphisms in a candidate gene approach have been explored as risk factors for periodontitis. There is limited evidence that some polymorphisms in the genes encoding interleukins (IL)-1, Fc gamma receptors (Fc gammaR), IL-10 and the vitamin D receptor, may be associated with periodontitis in certain ethnic groups. However relatively large variations in carriage rates of the Rare (R)-alleles among studies on any polymorphism were observed. The available studies appear under-powered and do not adequately take into account other pertinent risk factors for periodontitis. Future studies should include larger cohorts, should clearly define phenotypes and should adequately control for other risk factors. In addition to the candidate gene approach, alternative strategies need to be considered to elucidate the gene variations, which confer risk for periodontitis.

Abstract
AIM: To investigate IL-1b+3 594 in the 5th intron, IL-10-1 082 and CD14-159 polymorphisms in patients with acute pancreatitis (AP) and septic shock.
METHODS: The study included 215 patients (109 with acute severe pancreatitis (SAP), 106 with acute mild pancreatitis (MAP)) and 116 healthy volunteers. Genomic DNA was prepared from peripheral blood leukocytes. Genotypes and allele frequencies were determined in patients and healthy controls using restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of PCR products.
RESULTS: The frequencies of IL-1b+3 594T, IL-10-1082G and CD14-159T allele were similar in patients with mild or severe pancreatitis and in controls. Within SAP patients, no significant differences were found in the allele distribution examined when etiology was studied again. Patients with septic shock showed a significantly higher prevalence of IL-10-1082G allele than those without shock (c2 = 5.921, P = 0.015).
CONCLUSION: IL-10-1082G plays an important role in the susceptibility of SAP patients to septic shock. Genetic factors are not important in determination of disease severity or susceptibility to AP.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Severe forms of periodontitis are suggested to have a genetic basis. OBJECTIVE The aim of the present investigation was to study the association of gene polymorphisms related to some immune regulation components (G-308A TNFA, Q551R IL-4RA and C-159T CD14) with severe chronic periodontitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty patients (aged 36-74 years; mean 54.5+/-8.5) with severe and generalized chronic periodontitis were included. The patients exhibited bone loss >50% at all teeth. Thirty-nine periodontally healthy subjects between 35 and 78 years of age (mean 51.0+/-10.9) were recruited as controls. DNA was isolated from peripheral blood cells and genotyping was performed by combination of PCR and restriction endonuclease mapping. RESULTS While gene polymorphisms for TNFA and IL-4RA did not show any association with severe chronic periodontitis, the analysis of the -159 CD14 gene polymorphism revealed significant differences between test and control groups. The proportion of subjects that exhibited the TT genotype was significantly smaller in the group with severe periodontitis than in periodontal healthy group (p=0.028; Fisher's exact test). The C allele carriage was 90% in the periodontitis group and significantly higher than in the healthy control group (72%). CONCLUSION It is suggested that the -159 CD14 gene polymorphism is associated with chronic periodontitis in Caucasian subjects of a north European origin.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Because of ongoing increases in life expectancy and deferment of edentulousness to older age, dentists are facing a different challenge to satisfy elderly denture wearers with a higher prevalence of chronic diseases. This discussion introduces the Human Genome databases as novel and powerful resources to re-examine the core problems experienced by frail and edentulous patients. BACKGROUND Recent studies demonstrated that mandibular implant overdentures do not necessarily increase masticatory function, perception and satisfaction in denture wearers with adequate edentulous residual ridges. It has been demonstrated that the rate of edentulous residual ridge resorption significantly varies among individuals. The prognosis and cost-effectiveness of denture treatment, with or without implants, may largely depend on how the edentulous ridge is maintained. However, reliable clinical methods permitting dentists to predict the long-term health of the edentulous residual ridge are lacking. MATERIALS AND METHODS With the completion of the Human Genome Project, the genomic sequence database from this multinational consortium will provide a unique resource to determine the genetic basis of similarity and diversity of humans. RESULTS One base pair in every 100 to 300 base pairs of the genome sequence varies among humans, suggesting that genetic diagnosis using the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) may provide a novel opportunity to differentiate our edentulous patients. CONCLUSIONS Future dental service for the elderly will require a personalized care paradigm, using highly sensitive diagnostic technology such as SNP genomic analysis, for recommending the treatment with greatest potential benefit.
