Assessment of Questionnaire of Physical Activity at Workplace Based on the Social Cognitive Theory (PAWPQ-SCT): A Psychometric Study in Iranian Gas Refinery Workers

Background

This study aimed to develop and assess the psychometric features of the Physical Activity at Workplace Questionnaire (PAWPQ) based on the Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) to evaluate employees' physical activity (PA) behaviors at the workplace.

Methods

This psychometric cross-sectional study was conducted on 455 employees working in one of the gas refineries in Iran. The participants were selected using the proportional stratified sampling method in 2019. The data collection tools were a demographic information questionnaire, the short form of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), and a questionnaire developed based on the SCT, whose psychometric features were confirmed in terms of validity and reliability. Data were analyzed using SPSS22 and AMOS20 software.

Results

The first version of PAWPQ-SCT had 74 items. After evaluating content and face validity, nine items were removed. The results of the content validity index (0.98), content validity ratio (0.86), and impact score (3.62) were acceptable for the whole instrument. In exploratory factor analysis, after removing seven items-58-item final version of the scale-six factors could explain 73.54% of the total variance. The results of structural equation modeling showed the acceptable fit of the model into the data (RMSEA = 0.052, CFI = 0.917, NFI = 0.878, TLI = 0.905, IFI = 0.917, CMIN/DF = 2.818). Cronbach's alpha coefficient and Intraclass Correlation were 0.90 and 0.86, respectively.

Conclusion

This study confirmed that the psychometric features of the 58-item final version of PAWPQ-SCT constructs were acceptable in a sample of Iranian employees. This questionnaire can be used as a valid and reliable tool to evaluate Iranian employees' PA behaviors and develop effective educational interventions for workers and managers.

The influence of achievement motivation on college students’ employability: A chain mediation analysis of self-efficacy and academic performance

Employability of college students has been attached great importance by higher education institutions, employers, and governments because college graduates are the strategic human resource for the sustainable growth of universities, organizations, and countries across the world. It is also receiving growing attention from academic community. This study aimed to examine the psychological mechanism that impacts college students’ employability. It adopted an empirical approach by collecting data from 646 final-year students from 9 universities in the mainland of China. SPSS 25.0 was used for description, correlation, and regression analysis. AMOS 24.0 was utilized for path analysis. Model 6 Bootstrap method of PROCESS Version 3.5 was adopted for mediation analysis. The results showed that achievement motivation positively predicted self-efficacy, academic performance, and employability among undergraduates. Participants’ self-efficacy did not significantly impact their employability or play a mediating role in the relationship between achievement motivation and employability, while academic performance was a significant mediator of this association. Self-efficacy and academic performance served as chain mediators in the prediction of achievement motivation on college students’ employability. After controlling gender and family residence, achievement motivation still had significant and positive impact on employability of college students. This research made several noteworthy contributions to the existing studies on college students’ employability and provided insight for practitioners in strengthening their employability through these psychological constructs.

Applying Social Cognitive Theory in Predicting Physical Activity Among Chinese Adolescents: A Cross-Sectional Study With Multigroup Structural Equation Model

This cross-sectional study aimed to assess the applicability of social cognitive determinants among the Chinese adolescents and examine whether the predictability of the social cognitive theory (SCT) model on physical activity (PA) differs across gender (boys and girls) and urbanization (urban and suburban). A total of 3,000 Chinese adolescents ranging between the ages of 12-15 years were randomly selected to complete a set of questionnaires. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was applied to investigate the relationships between social cognitive variables and PA in the urbanization and gender subgroups. The overall model explained 38.9% of the variance in PA. Fit indices indicated that the structural model of SCT was good: root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) = 0.047, (root mean square residual) RMR = 0.028, goodness of fit index (GFI) = 0.974, adjusted goodness of fit index (AGFI) = 0.960, Tucker-Lewis coefficient (TLI) = 0.971, and comparative fit index (CFI) = 0.978. Regarding the subgroup analysis, social support (critical ratios [CRs] = 2.118; p < 0.001) had a more substantial impact on the PA of adolescents in suburban areas than that in urban areas, whereas self-regulation (CRs = -2.896, p < 0.001) had a more substantial impact on the PA of adolescents in urban areas than in suburban areas. The results indicate that the SCT model predicts the PA of Chinese adolescents substantially. An SCT model could apply over a range of subgroups to predict the PA behavior and should be considered comprehensively when designing interventions. These findings would benefit PA among the Chinese adolescents, especially across genders and urbanization.

Nutrition Literacy Measurement Tool With Multiple Features for Chinese Adults

BACKGROUND

Nutrition literacy is an emerging term which is increasingly used in policy and research. Progression is limited by the lack of an accepted method to measure nutrition literacy in Chinese adult, even research in this area is growing.

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this study is to develop a valid instrument to assess nutrition literacy in Chinese adults.

METHODS

The process involved 2 steps: constructed nutrition literacy conceptual framework, and developed potential items of scale based on literature review; and conducted 2 rounds of Delphi consultation to select items of the preliminary questionnaire.

RESULTS

In Delphi survey, the content validity index for each domain, level, and dimension of nutrition literacy was 1.0, coefficient of variation was less than 0.10, and Kendall's coefficient of concordance was greater than 0.83. All of the 2 domains, 3 levels, and 6 dimensions initially formulated by our research team were reserved in the conceptual framework of nutrition literacy. Furthermore, a 43-item nutrition literacy measurement scale was established. Each item kept in the final scale reaches a high degree of concentration and a high degree of coordination, with the mean of importance ranging from 4.38 to 5.00.

CONCLUSIONS

A nutrition literacy measurement scale with multiple features was established for Chinese adults, providing an operationalized tool to assess comprehensively nutrition literacy for research and practice in the field of nutrition, diet, and health.

Determinants of Continuance Intention to Use Health Apps among Users over 60: A Test of Social Cognitive Model

Promoting healthy behavior among seniors is important in reducing the burden of care and healthcare expenses in a rapidly aging society. Health apps can play an important role in health promotion for older adults, but the level of user retention in health apps is low. To increase continued health app use among older adults, this study examined the factors influencing older users’ continuance intentions to use health apps. The research model was developed based on the social cognitive theory of health behavior, which integrates cognitive, environmental, and behavioral perspectives. To test the research model, an anonymous online survey was conducted among respondents aged 60 to 79 years who were using health apps. The measurement items in the questionnaire were developed based on validated scales from the literature. A total of 250 samples were analyzed. The assessment of the measurement model indicates that the reliability and validity of the items are satisfactory. The results of testing the structural model illustrate the determinants of health app continuance intention: health technology self-efficacy, self-evaluative outcome expectations, self-regulation, and privacy risk. The interrelationships among determinants are also investigated. Theoretical and practical implications are suggested to encourage older adults’ continued health app use and promote their health behavior over the long term.

Social Cognitive Correlates of Physical Activity among Chinese University Employees: A Cross-Sectional Study

Despite the well-documented benefits of leisure time physical activity, university employees are often reported to be at high risk of physical inactivity and low fitness levels. However, few efforts have been made to identify modifiable correlates of physical activity among this population. From the perspective of Social Cognitive Theory (SCT), the current study aims to examine the relationship between physical activity and a series of demographic variables (e.g., age, gender, income, education), self-reported fitness, and social cognitive variables. Data were collected through mail-based surveys from a convenience sample consisting of 116 Chinese university employees (age = 36.59 ± 8.7 y). An array of SCT variables, namely, exercise self-efficacy (r = 0.55, p < 0.01), barrier self-efficacy (r = 0.35, p < 0.01), exercise social support (r = 0.37, p < 0.01), importance of physical self (r = 0.30, p < 0.01), outcome expectations (r = 0.24, p < 0.05), and satisfaction with health(r = 0.32, p < 0.01) were found to be positively correlated with physical activity in Chinese faculty and staff, and most of the correlations were moderate to large in magnitude. Further regression analyses indicate that exercise self-efficacy (β = 0.29, p < 0.01) and exercise social support from friends (β = 0.70, p < 0.01) emerge as significant predictors of physical activity after controlling for age, gender, occupation (faculty or staff), and self-reported fitness. It is concluded that these SCT variables are important correlates of university employees' physical activity behavior. Future physical activity promotion interventions in this population should incorporate strategies to improve one's confidence in maintaining regular physical activity and enhance social support from friends, which are likely to increase the effectiveness of these programs.

Applying social cognitive theory to predict physical activity and dietary behavior among patients with type-2 diabetes

INTRODUCTION

Non-communicable diseases, arising out of changing lifestyle habits of people, are the foremost causes of mortality and morbidity worldwide. Most of these diseases occur in low and middle-income countries. Chronic diseases can be managed with the help of health behaviors such as proper diet, physical exercise, adherence to medication, and avoidance of health risk behaviors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, sedentary lifestyle, etc. The social cognitive theory addresses the role of personal and environmental factors in an individual's health behavior. The current study aims to understand the role of social cognitive theory on physical activity and dietary behavior amongst individuals diagnosed with type-2 diabetes.

METHODS

A correlational study was conducted among 225 participants with type-2 diabetes, who are under medication. The data was collected using social cognitive questionnaire for physical activity & dietary behavior and Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile II. Descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficient and multiple linear regression analysis were used to analyze the data.

RESULTS

It was found from the study results that, all the domains of social cognitive theory were significantly correlated with physical activity (p<0.001) and the SCT domains- self-regulation (p<0.001), social support (p<0.001), and outcome expectancy (p<0.05) were significantly correlated with dietary behavior. The results of multiple linear regressions indicated that the domains self- regulation and self- efficacy were the significant predictor for physical activity behavior (R2=.21, p ≤ 0.001) while the domains social support and self-regulation were the significant predictor of dietary behavior (R2=.09, p ≤ 0.001).

CONCLUSION

The study results show that there is an influence of social cognitive domains on physical activity and dietary behaviour. Further, this study suggests that social cognitive theory based intervention can be used to promote healthy behaviour.

Genetic and Environmental Influences on Vigorous Exercise in South Korean Adolescent and Young Adult Twins

Twin studies of physical exercise for Asian twins are sparse. This study aimed to examine genetic and environmental influences on frequency of vigorous exercise (FVE) in South Korean twins, with a special emphasis on sex effects. Telephone interviews on FVE were administered to 1757 twins (mean age = 19.05 years, SD = 3.01 years). Tetrachoric correlations were significantly different between monozygotic (MZ) and dizygotic (DZ) twins in males (.40 vs. .12), but they were similar in females (.44 vs. .45), suggesting the importance of genetic factors in FVE in males and that of common environmental factors in females. A scalar sex-limitation model incorporating age as a modifier was applied to data. The results revealed that genetic, common and individual environmental influences did not vary significantly with age, but differed across two sexes, confirming twin correlational analyses. In the best-fitting model, additive genetic and individual environmental influences on FVE were, respectively, .35 (95% CI [.26, .39]) and .65 (95% CI [.61, .74]) in males, and common and individual environmental influences were, respectively, .45 (95% CI [.35, .53]) and .55 (95% CI [.47, .65]) in females. These results contrasted starkly with recent findings from a large sample of Chinese adult twins (age >18 years), in which most variance (≥95%) of vigorous physical activity was attributable to common environmental influences in both sexes. Replications in other Asian samples are clearly needed.

Associations between Problematic Smartphone Use, Unhealthy Behaviors, and Mental Health Status in Korean Adolescents: Based on Data from the 13th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey (2017)

OBJECTIVE

We aimed to assess the associations between problematic smartphone use, unhealthy behaviors, and mental health status among adolescents.

METHODS

The data for this cross-sectional study were obtained from the 13th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey (2017). From among the 62,276 adolescents who participated in this nationwide web-based survey, 54,603 (87.7%) who used smartphones were selected as the study population. Unhealthy behaviors included smoking, drinking, physical inactivity, skipping breakfast, and fast food consumption. For the examination of mental health status, we considered sleep disturbances, stress, depressive symptoms, suicidal ideation, and suicide attempts. The associations between problematic smartphone use, unhealthy behaviors, and mental health were analyzed using multiple logistic regression analyses.

RESULTS

More than four hours of use on weekdays (31.3%) and weekends (61.3%) and the use of smartphones for communication (46.9%) were associated with unhealthy behaviors and mental health problems. Furthermore, adolescents who experienced conflicts with family (22.3%) and friends (25.8%) and academic problems (3.4%) were likely to have health problems.

CONCLUSION

The results suggest that problematic smartphone use may disrupt adolescents' health. Therefore, there is a need for prevention programs for problematic smartphone use at home and at school to improve adolescents' health.

Epidemiologic assessment of self-concept and academic self-efficacy in Iranian high school students: Multilevel analysis

INTRODUCTION

In social cognitive theory, self-efficacy and self-concept (SC) have been introduced as important constructs that associate with adolescents' achievements. The aim of this study was to investigate the determinant factors of academic self-efficacy (ASE) and SC in Iranian high school students based on the multilevel analysis.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

In this descriptive-analytical cross-sectional study, 1740 students from 53 high schools selected with stratified random sampling method in 2018 in Qazvin, Iran. Data collection tools were the Morgan and Jinks Self-Efficacy Scale and the Piers-Harris Children's SC Scale-Second Edition. The association between some of the students and school variables with ASE and SC was analyzed by hierarchical linear regression models.

RESULTS

The score of the students' standardized ASE was lower than SC. ASE and SC had a strong positive significant association with economic status, grade point average, and the educational period of high school. Sex had no association with any of them. Physical activity had a positive significant association with SC but was no found association by ASE.

CONCLUSION

These findings revealed that for improving the adolescents' ASE and SC should be attention to the adolescents' family condition and school-related factors. Proper educational, sports, and supportive programs can be effective on the adolescents' self-efficacy and SC.

Characterization of Sedentary Behavior in Heart Failure Patients With Arthritis

Background

Arthritis is one of the most common comorbidities in heart failure (HF) patients, and is associated with decreased activity levels. Few studies have examined sedentary behavior (SB) in HF patients with arthritis, and little is known about the factors that may influence SB in this population.

Methods

This is a retrospective, secondary analysis using data collected from a randomized control trial. SB was measured by the daily sedentary time collected by accelerometers. Structural equation modeling was performed to examine relationships between key concepts based on social cognitive theory, and elucidate the potential pathways by which demographic, clinical and sociobehavioral factors that influence SB.

Results

A total of 101 participants’ data were used for this analysis. Participants were mainly female (n = 64, 63%) with a mean age of 70 years (standard deviation (SD) = 12.2) and an average of 13 years of education (SD = 2.3). SB was highly prevalent at baseline (mean value: 21.0 h/day), 3 months (mean value: 20.6 h/day) and 6 months (mean value: 20.8 h/day) in study participants. Factors with statistically significant positive association with sedentary time include age and retirement, while significant negative association was found with current employment. HF self-care efficacy and behavior were also significantly associated with SB.

Conclusions

Most HF patients with arthritis in this study lived a sedentary lifestyle. Additional studies are needed to identify feasible and effective exercise programs for HF participants with arthritis.
