Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS The COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease-2019) pandemic confronted the global healthcare system with a variety of challenges. The pandemic and the associated lockdowns also had an impact on multiple medical disciplines (i.e. delay of surgery, change of hospital admissions). The aim of this study was to analyze the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mandible fracture patterns/distributions and circumstances in a German cranio-maxillofacial trauma center. MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective study compared the mandible fracture patterns of patients in the PreCOVID (PC) era (February 2019-January 2020) with patients in the IntraCOVID (IC) era (February 2020-January 2021). In addition to baseline characteristics, the number/type of mandible fractures, location of the mandible fracture, circumstances leading to mandible fracture, and hospital admissions/treatments were analyzed. RESULTS A total of 127 patients was included in this study. In the IC period, the absolute frequencies of mandible fractures decreased (PC = 72 vs. IC = 55). There were minor changes in the mandible fracture locations. An increase of concomitant facial soft tissue injuries (IC = 69.1% vs. PC = 58.3%), as well as higher rates of traumatic tooth loss (IC = 32.7% vs. PC = 22.2%), was observed. Regarding the causes/accidents leading to mandible fractures, there were significant increases in falls and significant decreases in sports accidents as well as interpersonal violence during the IC period. A significant increase in accidents at home and domestic violence during the COVID-19 pandemic, with a simultaneous decrease in weekend and night-time trauma leading to mandible fractures was observed. Furthermore, a significant increase in days from trauma to surgery was recorded. CONCLUSION The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on mandibular fracture patterns. The locations and types of mandibular fractures changed slightly. However, significant differences in the circumstances leading to mandible fractures (increased falls, decreased interpersonal violence) were recorded.

Abstract
Abstract: The increase in the prevalence of both colon and rectal cancer in recent years poses challenges for the medical system in terms of patient management and indirectly incurs significant financial burdens. Purpose: The aim of this paper is to track the changes in the prevalance of the colon and rectal cancer at a tertiary clinic in Romania over time and to identify complementary methods to improve the prognosis and quality of life of cancer patients. Material and methods: We conducted an observational, longitudinal, population-based study, including all patients newly diagnosed with colon or rectal neoplasia within the time frame from 1 January 2013 to 1 January 2024 in a tertiary medical clinic in Romania. For each case included in the study, we gathered demographic data (age at the time of cancer diagnosis, gender, place of origin), location of the tumor, duration until surgical intervention, alternative treatment methods employed (such as ra-diation or chemotherapy, and immunotherapy), and the length of survival. We also assess the feasiblity of physical prehabilitation and rehabilitation programs for inpatients diagnosed with malignant neoplasms of the colon or rectum. Results: The study found significant differences in patient ages and the execution of prehabilitation and rehabilitation practices between those ad-mitted for colon and rectal cancer during the periods 2013-2018 and 2019-2023, with a notable shift in the prevalence of colon versus rectal cancer over these periods. Conclusions: Prehabilitation and rehabilitation practices for colorectal cancer patients are underdocumented or suboptimal, with recent improvements in documentation, especially for rectal cancer due to colostomy needs, and an observed increase in patient age due to COVID-19 pandemic protocols. Additional research and the development of standardized protocols are needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND ABP 215 is a biosimilar to the reference product, bevacizumab, and was one of the first biosimilars approved by Health Canada for the first-line treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). This study aimed to address gaps in real-world evidence (RWE) including patient characteristics, treatment safety (primary objective), and effectiveness (secondary objective) for first-line ABP 215 therapy in Canadian patients with mCRC. MATERIALS AND METHODS Retrospective data were collected in 2 waves, at least 1 year (Wave 1) or 2 years (Wave 2) after commercial availability of ABP 215 at each participating site. RESULTS A total of 75 patients from Wave 1 and 164 patients from Wave 2 treated with a minimum of 1 cycle of ABP 215 were included. At least one safety event of interest (EOI) was recorded for 34.7% of Wave 1 and 42.7% of Wave 2 patients. The median progression free survival (PFS) for Wave 1 and 2 patients were 9.47 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 6.71, 11.90) and 21.38 (95% CI: 15.82, not estimable) months, respectively. Median overall survival was not estimable for Wave 1 and was 26.45 months for Wave 2. CONCLUSION The safety and effectiveness of ABP 215 observed in this real-world study were comparable to clinical trial findings and to other RWE with longer PFS in the current study.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES The fecal immunochemical test (FIT) helps triage primary care patients at risk of colorectal cancer (CRC). Improving FIT returns has received recent attention, however uncertainty exists regarding the accurate completion of samples provided for laboratory analysis. This study aims to identify the rejection rate of returned FIT samples and determine rejection causes. METHODS FIT samples from symptomatic patients within South Yorkshire, Bassetlaw, and North Derbyshire are processed at a central laboratory. Tests requests are made from 225 GP practices, which serve an estimated 2 million population. This study describes a retrospective review of FIT samples received in the central laboratory between 01/09/19 and 31/12/22. Locally held data was interrogated in March 2023 to determine the number of FIT samples received and rejected during the study period. Documented reasons for rejection were explored to identify common themes. RESULTS Total FIT specimens received during the study period was 126 422. Of these, 5190 (4.1%) were rejected. Monthly rejection rates fell from 17.4% in September 2019 to 1.3% in December 2022 (P < .001). Sampling errors were the most frequent cause for FIT rejection (2151/5190), with other causes including: expired specimen; no sample collection date/ time, no request form, incomplete patient information and illegible handwriting. CONCLUSIONS This is the first study exploring FIT rejection rates in symptomatic primary care patients, which shows improvements in rejection rates over time. Targeted interventions could improve rejection rates further, thereby reducing NHS resource use and costs and diagnostic delays.

Abstract
AbstractThe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic brought about unprecedented challenges to global healthcare systems. Among the most vulnerable populations are cancer patients, who face dilemmas due to their compromised immune systems and the intricate interplay with the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) virus. This comprehensive review delves into the multifaceted relationship between COVID‐19 and cancer. Through an analysis of existing literature and clinical data, this review unravels the structural intricacies of the virus and examines its profound implications for cancer patients, thereby bridging the knowledge gap between virology and oncology. The review commences with an introduction regarding the COVID‐19 pandemic and cancer. It then transitions into a detailed examination of the SARS‐CoV‐2 virus and its variants such as Alpha (PANGO lineage B.1.1.7), Beta (B.1.351), Gamma (P.1), Delta (B.1.617.2), and Omicron (B.1.1.529 lineage). Subsequently, an insightful analysis of the impact of COVID‐19 on major cancer types (viz., Lung, Colon, Brain, and gastrointestinal cancer) is elaborated. Finally, the therapeutic avenues, oncological care, and management are discussed. The nexus between COVID‐19 and cancer adds a layer of complexity to patient care, emphasizing the importance of tailored approaches for those grappling with both conditions. Amid the landscape defined by the evolving viral strains, this review navigates through the multifaceted implications of COVID‐19 on cancer patients and underscores the significance of integrating virology and oncology.

Abstract
Background/Aim The COVID-19 pandemic has forced medical institutions to scale back their practice. Changes in patient behavior seemed to be having an impact. We conducted a survey with the aim of reviewing lung cancer treatment during the pandemic period and identifying problems. Patients and Methods We examined the medical records of all patients pathologically diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in our hospital from 2017 to 2022. NSCLC patients were divided into two groups: those diagnosed between 2017 and 2019 (first period) and those diagnosed between 2020 and 2022 (second period). Results Within the study period, 267 NSCLC patients (first period: 147 patients, second period: 121 patients) were diagnosed in our hospital. The patients in the two study periods did not differ significantly in age (p=0.613), ECOG performance status (p=0.125), and clinical stage (p=0.354). Tumor size was significantly larger in the second period with a mean of 5.88 cm ± 3.02, compared to 4.24 cm ± 1.76 in the first period (p<0.001). In the standard treatment group, the median survival time was 457 days in the first period and 313 days in the second period (p=0.063). In the best supportive care group, median survival time was 122 days in the first period and 57 days in the second period (p=0.004). Conclusion Patients themselves refrained from seeking consultation for lung cancer treatment during the pandemic period. It is inconclusive how to reduce the delay due to the suppression of consultations, but this is an important issue for the future.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all aspects of the healthcare system, including prevention, treatment, rehabilitation of diseases and health education; access to essential therapies; allocation of finance & facilities to health issues, and governance of diseases, including COVID-19 and other diseases. Consequently, the burden of COVID-19 was not only attributable to the multiorgan involvement and detailed presentation of the disease but also to the inadequate management of other diseases resulting from the exclusive allocation of resources and medical personnel to the pandemic crisis. Over the mentioned period, one observed deficiency was the lack of public and official favor for conventional screening protocols. To this end, this study aims to evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on colorectal cancer (CRC) screening protocols at Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences in Tehran, Iran, in an effort to identify individuals at risk for CRC and provide them with intensive screening and therapy. METHODS This is an observational study comparing the number of candidates for CRC screening referred to primary, secondary, and tertiary health-care centers under supervision of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences (SBMU), Tehran, Iran in a 2-year interval before and after COVID-19 pandemics. Patients with intermediate- and high-risk criteria for colorectal cancer were included in the study and were screened by fecal immunochemical test. Patients with positive or indeterminate fecal test results were further evaluated with colonoscopy in research institute for gastroenterology and liver diseases where is a tertiary referral center for CRC screening. Finally, the decrease percentage of screening tests and endoscopic findings during the pandemic period compared to pre-pandemic period was calculated and interpreted. RESULTS A significant decrease in the number of performed fecal immunochemical tests (FITs), referred positive FITs, and referred patients with positive alarm signs to the Research Institute of Gastroenterology and Liver Diseases (RIGLD) center inevitably led to a considerable decrease in the number of endoscopic findings, including high-risk adenomas, sessile serrated polyps, and even early-stage colorectal cancers (CRCs). CONCLUSION The disruption of screening protocols caused by the COVID-19 pandemic appears to increase the number of patients with high-grade and end-stage CRCs referred in the near future.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic had a major effect on consumption of healthcare services. Changes in the use of routine diagnostic exams, increased incidences of post-acute COVID-19 syndrome (PCS), and other pandemic-related factors, may have influenced detected clinical conditions. OBJECTIVE The study aimed to analyze the impact of COVID-19 on the use of outpatient medical imaging services and clinical findings therein, specifically focusing on the time period after the launch of the Israeli COVID-19 vaccination campaign. In addition, the study tested whether the observed gains in abnormal findings may be linked to PCS or COVID-19 vaccination. METHODS Our dataset included 572,480 ambulatory medical imaging patients in a national health organization, from January 1, 2019 to August 31, 2021. We compared different measures of medical imaging utilization and clinical findings therein, before and after the surge of the pandemic, to identify significant changes. We also inspected the changes in the rate of abnormal findings during the pandemic after adjusting for changes in medical imaging utilization. Finally, for imaging classes that showed increased rates of abnormal findings, we measured the causal associations between COVID-19 infection, hospitalization (indicative of COVID-19 complications), and vaccination and future risk for abnormal finding. To allow adjustment for a multitude of confounding factors, we used causal inference methodologies. RESULTS After the initial drop in the utilization of routine medical imaging due to the first COVID-19 wave, the number of these exams has increased, but with lower proportions of older patients, patients with comorbidities, women, and vaccine-hesitant patients. Furthermore, we observed significant gains in the rate of abnormal findings, specifically in musculoskeletal magnetic resonance (MR-MSK) and brain computed tomography (CT-brain) exams. These results also persisted after adjusting for the changes in medical imaging utilization. Demonstrated causal associations included: COVID-19 infection increasing the risk for an abnormal finding in a CT-brain exams (odds ratio [OR] of 1.4, with 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.1 to 1.7); and COVID-19-related hospitalization increasing the risk for abnormal findings in an MR-MSK exam (OR 3.1, 95% CI 1.9 to 5.3). CONCLUSIONS COVID-19 impacted the use of ambulatory imaging exams, with greater avoidance among patients at higher risk for COVID-19 complications: older patients, patients with comorbidities, and non-vaccinated patients. Causal analysis results imply that PCS may have contributed to the observed gains in abnormal findings in MR-MSK and CT-brain exams, respectively. CLINICALTRIAL
