Muscle-specific endurance of the trapezius muscles using electrical twitch mechanomyography

Physiological and Anthropometric Differences Among Endurance, Strength, and High-Intensity Functional Training Participants: A Cross-Sectional Study

Purpose: We compared aerobic capacity (V˙O2max), mitochondrial capacity (mV˙O2), anaerobic power, strength, and muscle endurance in healthy, active men from strength (STR), endurance (END) and high-intensity functional training (HIFT) backgrounds. Methods: Twenty-four men (n = 8/group) completed a cycle ergometer test to determine V˙O2max, followed by a 3-min all-out test to determine peak (PP) and end power (EP), and to estimate anaerobic [work done above EP (WEP)] and aerobic work capacity. Strength was determined by knee extensor maximal voluntary contraction at various flexion angles. The endurance index (EI) of the vastus lateralis (VL) was assessed by measuring muscle contraction acceleration during electrical twitch mechanomyography. mV˙O2max of the VL was assessed using near-infrared spectroscopy to estimate muscle oxygen consumption during transient femoral artery occlusions. Results: V˙O2max was significantly different among groups (p < .05). PP was significantly higher in HIFT and STR versus END (p < .05). EP was significantly higher in HIFT and END compared to STR (p < .05). WEP was significantly higher in STR compared to END (p < .05), whereas total work done was significantly higher in HIFT and END compared to STR (p < .05). mV˙O2max and EI were comparable between HIFT and END but significantly lower in STR versus END (p < .05). Torque production was significantly lower in END compared to STR and HIFT at all flexion angles (p < .05), with no difference between STR and HIFT. Conclusion: HIFT participants can exert similar power outputs and absolute strength compared to strength focused participants but exhibit fatigue resistance and mitochondrial capacity comparable to those who train for endurance.

A non-volitional skeletal muscle endurance test measures functional changes associated with impaired blood flow

Introduction: An electrically stimulated intermittent fatigue test using mechanomyography was recently proposed as a possible tool for detecting clinically relevant changes in muscle function. This study was designed to determine whether the proposed test can detect additional fatigue when it should be present. Methods: Subjects (n = 10) underwent two trials each (occluded and normal blood flow) with a standardized fatigue protocol on the Ankle Dorsiflexors (AD) and Wrist Extensors (WE) using a clinical electrical stimulator. Results: Mean normalized twitch acceleration was strongly predictive of mean normalized torque (R ² = 0.828). The WE experienced lower twitch magnitudes throughout the tourniquet trial (10.81 ± 1.25 m/s²) compared to normal blood flow (18.05 ± 1.06 m/s²). The AD twitches were overall reduced in the tourniquet trial (3.87 ± 0.48 m/s²) compared with the control trial (8.57 ± 0.91 m/s²). Conclusion: Occluding blood flow to a muscle should cause greater muscle fatigue. The ability to detect reduced contraction magnitudes during an electrically stimulated fatigue protocol resulting from low blood flow suggests the proposed test may be capable of detecting clinically relevant muscle deficits.

Endurance of the Dorsal and Ventral Muscles in the Neck

Endurance of the muscles of the neck are rarely studied. This study measured the endurance index (EI) of the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) and upper trapezius muscles of the neck (trap). The vastus lateralis (VL) was used for comparison. Skeletal muscle endurance of twelve healthy subjects, age 19-22 years, were tested on their SCM and trap in random order on one day, VL was tested on a separate day. Participants were tested in the supine position for the SCM and VL muscles and the prone position for the trap. Muscle contractions consisted of a 5 Hz twitch electrical stimulation for 5 min. Muscle acceleration (resultant vector) was measured using a triaxial accelerometer. EI was the ending acceleration as a percentage of the maximal acceleration. The endurance index (EI) for the SCM, trap, and VL was 42.3 ± 13.0%, 42.3 ± 20.2%, and 92.9 ± 11.0%, respectively. The EI of the VL was significantly higher than the EI of the SCM (t(2,22) = 10.33, p < 0.001) and the trap (t(2,22) = 7.625, p < 0.001). The EI was not different between the SCM and the trap muscle (t(2,22) = 0.004, p = 0.997). In conclusion, the neck muscles had much less endurance than the muscles in the leg and could make fatigued athletes more susceptible to concussions caused by head impacts.

MUSCLE MITOCHONDRIAL CAPACITY AND ENDURANCE IN ADULTS WITH TYPE 1 DIABETES

The impact of type 1 diabetes (T1D) on muscle endurance and oxidative capacity is currently unknown.

Purpose

Measure muscle endurance and oxidative capacity of adults with T1D compared to controls.

Methods

A cross-sectional study design with a control group was used. Subjects (19-37 years old) with T1D (n=17) and controls (n=17) were assessed with hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and casual glucose. Muscle endurance was measured with an accelerometer at stimulation frequencies of 2, 4, and 6 Hz for a total of nine minutes. Mitochondrial capacity was measured using near-infrared spectroscopy after exercise as the rate constant of the rate of recovery of oxygen consumption.

Results

T1D and control groups were similar in age, sex, height, and race. The T1D group had slightly higher BMI values and adipose tissue thickness over the forearm muscles. Casual glucose was 150±70 mg/dL for T1D and 98±16 mg/dL for controls (P=0.006). HbA1c of T1D subjects was 7.1±0.9% and 5.0±0.4% for controls (P<0.01). Endurance indexes at 2, 4, and 6 Hz were 94.5±5.2%, 81.8±8.4%, and 68.6±13.5% for T1D and 94.6±4.1%, 85.9±6.3%, and 68.7±15.4% for controls (p = 0.97, 0.12, 0.99, respectively). There were no differences between groups in mitochondrial capacity (T1D= 1.9±0.5 min^-1 and control=1.8±0.4 min^-1, P=0.29) or reperfusion rate (T1D= 8.8±2.8s and control=10.3±3.0s, P=0.88). There were no significant correlations between HbA1c and either muscle endurance, mitochondrial capacity or reperfusion rate.

Conclusions

Adults with T1D did not have reduced oxidative capacity, muscle endurance or muscle reperfusion rates compared to controls. HbA1c also did not correlate with muscle endurance, mitochondrial capacity or reperfusion rates. Future studies should extend these measurements to older people or people with poorly-controlled T1D.

The influence of muscle length on gastrocnemius and vastus lateralis muscle oxygen saturation and endurance

Increasing muscle length (passive stretch) has been shown to reduce muscle oxygen levels by increasing intramuscular pressure.

PURPOSE

To measure the effect of passive stretch on muscle-specific endurance and oxygen saturation in the vastus lateralis and medial gastrocnemius muscle groups.

METHODS

Muscle Endurance (EI), Muscle blood flow (MBF), and Muscle oxygen saturation (MVO₂) were measured on the vastus lateralis and medial gastrocnemius muscles in a passive stretched (lengthened) and relaxed (shortened) positions in 10 healthy individuals (21 ± 1 yrs.). Muscle endurance was measured with tri-axial accelerometer. Muscle oxygen saturation and blood flow were measured using a continuous wavelength Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS).

RESULTS

Muscle at stretched position showed a lower endurance index in the gastrocnemius (51 ± 9.6% versus 77 ± 9.1%, p = 0.008) and vastus lateralis (54 ± 8.9% versus 75 ± 9.6%, p < 0.001). The time to half recovery of oxygen levels during reactive hyperemia was slower in the stretched positions for the gastrocnemius (11.4 ± 1.0 s versus 8.2 ± 1.1 s, p < 0.001) and the vastus lateralis (9.8 ± 1.9 s versus 6.3 ± 0.7 s, p < 0.001). However, oxygen saturation during the endurance tests were not different between stretched and relaxed conditions in both muscle (p > 0.05 for all comparisons).

CONCLUSIONS

Studies of muscle endurance need to control for muscle length as changes in muscle length can influence muscle endurance.

Muscle-Specific Endurance of the Lower Back Erectors Using Electrical Twitch Mechanomyography

Lower back pain is a common symptom potentially associated with skeletal muscle dysfunction. The purpose of this study was to evaluate endurance in the lower back muscles of healthy participants using accelerometer-based mechanomyography. Methods: Young healthy subjects (N = 7) were tested. Surface electrodes and a tri-axial accelerometer were placed over the erector spinae muscle along the T11-L1 Vertebrae. Stimulation was for 3 min each at 2, 4, and 6 Hz, and changes in acceleration were used to calculate an endurance index (EI). Reproducibility of the endurance index measurements was tested on two separate days. Wrist flexor and vastus lateralis muscles were tested for comparison. Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) was used to measure muscle oxygen levels (O₂Hb) (N = 5). EI was 70.3 + 13.4, 32.6 + 8.4, and 19.2 + 6.2% for 2, 4, 6 Hz, respectively. The coefficients of variation were 9.8, 13.9, and 20.3% for 2, 4, 6 Hz, respectively. EI values were lower in the erector spinae muscles compared to the arm and the leg (p < 0.05). O₂Hb values were 86.4 + 10.9% at rest and were 77.2 + 15.5, 84.3 + 14.1, and 84.1 + 18.9% for 2, 4, 6 Hz, respectively (p > 0.05, all comparisons). An endurance index can be obtained from the lower back erectors muscles that is reproducible and not influenced by voluntary effort or muscle oxygen levels.
