Abstract
BACKGROUND Significant scientific research has been conducted concerning menopausal syndrome(MPS), yet few bibliometric analyses have been performed. Our aim was to recognise the 100 most highly cited published articles on MPS and to analytically evaluate their key features. METHODS To identify the 100 most frequently cited articles, a search was conducted on Web of Science using the term 'menopausal syndrome'. Articles that matched the predetermined criteria were scrutinised to obtain the following data: citation ranking, year of publication, publishing journal, journal impact factor, country of origin, academic institution, authors, study type, and keywords. RESULTS The publication period is from January 1, 2000, to August 31, 2022. The maximum number of citations was 406 and in 2012. The median citations per year was 39.70. Most of the articles focused on treatment and complications. These articles were published in 36 different journals, with the Journal of MENOPAUSE having published the greatest number (14%). Forty-eight articles (48%) were from the United States, with the University of Pittsburgh being the leading institute (9%). Joann E. Manson was the most frequent first author (n = 6). Observational studies were the most frequently conducted research type (n = 53), followed by experimental studies (n = 33). Keyword analysis identified classic research topics, including genitourinary syndrome of menopause, bone mineral density (BMD), and anti-mullerian hormone (AMH) loci. CONCLUSION Using bibliometrics, we conducted an analysis to identify the inadequacies, traditional focal points, and potential prospects in the study of MPS across current scientific areas. Treatment and complications are at the core of MPS research, whereas prediction and biomarkers have less literature of high quality. There is a necessity for innovative analytical metrics to measure the real effect of these papers with a high level of citation on clinical application.

Abstract
Menopause is associated with adverse cardiometabolic changes which increase the risk of new-onset type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Statins are widely used for primary and secondary CVD prevention, given their beneficial effects on the lipid profile and the vessel wall. On the other hand, statins increase the risk of T2DM. This association has been evaluated mainly in mixed-gender studies, without gender-specific evaluation. This narrative review evaluates the use of statins and the related risk of new-onset T2DM among postmenopausal women. Studies that incorporated a gender-specific analysis report a higher risk of new-onset T2DM in women than in men on treatment with statins. Fewer studies evaluated female-only samples; these confirm the observed association between statin use and new-onset T2DM. Factors influencing the association between statin use and T2DM include the type and dose of statin and the baseline metabolic status. Women may benefit from stratification of their metabolic risk before initiating a statin for CVD prevention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Female sexual dysfunction (FSD) has been suggested to be correlated with the burden of cardiovascular risk factors. AIM We aimed to evaluate the possible association between functional indices of vascular function and FSD scores in apparently healthy postmenopausal women. METHODS This cross-sectional study included 116 postmenopausal women who underwent assessment of endothelial function with measurement of flow-mediated dilation (FMD) of the branchial artery and arterial stiffness estimation with measurement of the carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV). We used the Greene Climacteric Scale to evaluate vasomotor symptomatology, the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) to evaluate FSD and the Beck Depression Inventory to evaluate mood disorder. Low sexual function was defined as an FSFI score <26.55. OUTCOMES These included FSFI and low sexual function scores as well as measures of PWV and FMD. RESULTS Sexual function scores were associated with measures of blood pressure (normal vs low sexual function; systolic blood pressure: 120.2 ± 15.0 mm Hg vs 113.4 ± 14.6 mm Hg; analysis of covariance P = .026; diastolic blood pressure: 75.9 ± 10.5 mm Hg vs 70.3 ± 9.9 mm Hg; analysis of covariance P = .012; both adjusted for age, body mass index, current smoking, and PWV). Systolic blood pressure, but not diastolic blood pressure, was associated with FSFI (B = 0.249, P = .041) and PWV (B = 0.392, P < .001). PWV measures were associated with FSFI (B = -0.291, P = .047) and pulse pressure (B = 0.355, P = .017). FMD measures were also associated with FSFI (B = 0.427, P = .033). All models were adjusted for age, body mass index, current smoking, insulin resistance, vasomotor symptomatology, and Beck Depression Inventory. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS Our findings demonstrate that lower scores of sexual function are associated with deteriorated vascular function mainly manifested as arterial stiffening, further contributing to systolic blood pressure changes. STRENGTHS AND LIMITATIONS The strength of this study is the carefully selected healthy sample of postmenopausal women, with simultaneous assessment of climacteric symptomatology and mood disorders. The limitations include the small sample size, the cross-sectional design, and the recruitment of consecutive outpatients of a university menopause clinic. CONCLUSION Longitudinal studies and interventions to improve FSD should further assess the clinical relevance of these findings.

Abstract
Menopause represents a critical life stage in women, characterized by hormonal changes that significantly impact cardiovascular health. While the decline in estrogen levels has long been recognized as a major contributor to cardiovascular aging in menopausal women, the role of androgens, particularly testosterone, has gained increasing attention in recent years. This comprehensive review aims to provide a thorough understanding of the impact of menopause on cardiovascular aging, with a specific focus on the influences of androgens. A literature search was conducted to gather relevant studies and clinical evidence exploring the relationship between menopause, androgens, and cardiovascular health. The review integrates findings from various studies to present a holistic view of the topic. The review outlines the changes in hormone levels during menopause and discusses the cardiovascular risk factors associated with this transition. Furthermore, it explores the impact of menopause on cardiovascular structure and function, elucidating the underlying mechanisms that contribute to cardiovascular aging. Androgens' significance in maintaining cardiovascular homeostasis is discussed, followed by exploring the effects of androgen decline during menopause on lipid profiles, insulin sensitivity, vascular function, and other cardiovascular parameters. The review delves into the mechanisms of androgen action on the cardiovascular system, emphasizing the role of androgen receptors and the intricate interplay between androgens, estrogens, and other hormones. Clinical evidence supporting the effects of androgens on cardiovascular aging is presented, including studies investigating the association between androgen levels and cardiovascular outcomes. The findings underscore the need for further research and offer insights into managing cardiovascular aging in menopausal women, including lifestyle interventions, pharmacological approaches, and the potential role of personalized medicine and precision therapies.

Abstract
Hypertension is the most prevalent cardiovascular disease of the adult population and is closely associated with serious cardiovascular events. The burden of hypertension with respect to vascular and other organ damage is greater in women. These sex differences are not fully understood. The unique feature in women is their transition to menopause accompanied by profound hormonal changes that affect the vasculature that are also associated with changes of blood pressure. Results from studies of hormone replacement therapy and its effects on the cardiovascular system are controversial, and the timing of treatment after menopause seems to be important. Therefore, revealing potential sex- and sex hormone-dependent pathophysiological mechanisms of hypertension in experimental studies could provide valuable information for better treatment of hypertension and vascular impairment, especially in postmenopausal women. The experimental rat models subjected to ovariectomy mimicking menopause could be useful tools for studying the mechanisms of blood pressure regulation after menopause and during subsequent therapy.

Effect of menopause and age on vascular impairment. Maturitas 2023; 169:46-52. Abstract
AIMS The prevalence of cardiovascular diseases increases in women after menopause. The aim of the study was to determine the impact of conventional cardiovascular risk factors such as age, blood pressure, smoking, cholesterol, obesity, and glucose balance, but also menopausal state and sleep-disordered breathing on vascular impairment during menopausal transition. METHODS 89 women initiated the study and 74 of them participated in the 10-year follow-up. Cardiovascular disease risk factor assessments, ultrasound measurements of brachial artery function, including nitroglycerin-mediated vasodilatation and flow-mediated endothelium-dependent vasodilation, and sleep studies were repeated at baseline and at 5-year and 10-year follow-ups. RESULTS Over the study period, all the cardiovascular disease risk estimates increased. Both flow-mediated endothelium-dependent vasodilatation (decline 55 %) and nitroglycerin-mediated vasodilatation (decline 18 %) worsened over the 10 years (p < 0.001). Vascular function was not associated with menopausal state (determined with follicle stimulating hormone). Systolic blood pressure (p = 0.009) and smoking (p = 0.006) at baseline were negatively associated with nitroglycerin-mediated vasodilatation at 5-year follow-up and the use of hormonal therapy at 5-year follow-up was positively associated with concurrent nitroglycerin-mediated vasodilatation (p = 0.041). Intermittent nocturnal hypoxemia at baseline was associated with flow-mediated endothelium-dependent vasodilatation at 10-year follow-up (p = 0.043). High body mass index and impaired glucose balance at 5-year follow-up were associated with nitroglycerin-mediated vasodilatation decline at 10-year follow-up (p = 0.022 and p = 0.037, respectively). CONCLUSIONS We demonstrate how cardiovascular risk factors and vascular function evolve during menopausal transition. Although menopause was not associated with vascular impairment, short-term improvement in vascular function was observed in those using menopausal hormonal therapy. Intermittent nocturnal hypoxemia, obesity and impaired glucose control are early predictors of vascular decline during postmenopause.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity is accompanied by low-grade inflammation and leucocytosis and increases the risk of venous thromboembolism. Associations with platelet count, however, are unclear, because several studies have reported positive associations only in women. Associations with body shape are also unclear, because waist and hip circumferences reflect overall body size, as well as body shape, and are correlated strongly positively with body mass index (BMI). METHODS We evaluated body shape with the allometric body shape index (ABSI) and hip index (HI), which reflect waist and hip size among individuals with the same weight and height and are uncorrelated with BMI. We examined the associations of BMI, ABSI, and HI with platelet count, mean platelet volume (MPV), and platelet distribution width (PDW) in multivariable linear regression models for 125,435 UK Biobank women and 114,760 men. We compared men with women, post-menopausal with pre-menopausal women, and older (≥ 52 years) with younger (< 52 years) men. RESULTS BMI was associated positively with platelet count in women, more strongly in pre-menopausal than in post-menopausal, and weakly positively in younger men but strongly inversely in older men. Associations of BMI with platelet count were shifted towards the inverse direction for daily alcohol consumption and current smoking, resulting in weaker positive associations in women and stronger inverse associations in men, compared to alcohol ≤ 3 times/month and never smoking. BMI was associated inversely with MPV and PDW in pre-menopausal women but positively in post-menopausal women and in men. ABSI was associated positively with platelet count, similarly in women and men, while HI was associated weakly inversely only in women. ABSI was associated inversely and HI positively with MPV but not with PDW and only in women. Platelet count was correlated inversely with platelet size and positively with leucocyte counts, most strongly with neutrophils. CONCLUSIONS Competing factors determine the associations of BMI with platelet count. Factors with sexually dimorphic action (likely thrombopoietin, inflammatory cytokines, or cortisol), contribute to a positive association, more prominently in women than in men, while age-dependent factors (likely related to liver damage and fibrosis), contribute to an inverse association, more prominently in men than in women.
