Research on Mechanical Behavior and Energy Evolution of Coal and Rocks with Different Thin Spray-On Liners Thickness under Uniaxial Compressive Loading

Compared with the traditional supporting materials such as the bolts, mesh, and concrete, thin spray-on liners (TSLs) have the advantages of improving impact energy bearing and absorption capacity of rocks. In this study, the uniaxial compressive mechanical response feature of white sandstone, yellow sandstone, and coal with different coating thickness of TSLs were investigated through laboratory tests and theoretical analysis. The hard segments and soft segments of TSLs induced microphase separation, and formed the physical cross-linking. The hard segment evenly dispersed in the soft segment, which improved the mechanical strength of the TSLs. The confining pressure was affected by the TSL-coated coal and rocks, which improved the mechanical strength of the rocks and coal under UCS loading. It was discovered that the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) increases with an increase in the TSL coating thickness, and UCS increments of the coated white sandstone, yellow sandstone and coal were 4.6%, 25.51%, and 43.75%, respectively. The energy absorption capacities of the coated coal, and yellow and white sandstones gradually decreased with an increase in their TSLs coating thickness. Meanwhile, the energy-absorbing capacity of a coated rock reduced gradually as rock coating decreases. Furthermore, the energy-absorbing capacity of coal is greater than that of yellow sandstone or white sandstone. By increasing the coating thickness, the total and dissipative energies in the yellow sandstone, white sandstone, and coal specimens were gradually increased, and energy increment was significantly more in coal (2–3 times), while the elastic energy remained nearly unchanged.

Recent Progress in Polymer-Containing Soft Matters for Safe Mining of Coal

Safe mining is the premise and guarantee of sustainable development of coal energy. Due to the combination of excellent properties of polymers and traditional soft matters, polymer-containing soft matters are playing an increasingly important role in mine disaster and hazard control. To summarize the valuable work in recent years and provide reference and inspiration for researchers in this field, this paper reviewed the recent research progress in polymer-containing soft matters with respect to mine dust control, mine fire control, mine gas control and mine roadway support. From the perspective role of polymers in a material system, we classify mine polymer-containing soft matters into two categories. The first is polymer additive materials, in which polymers are used as additives to modify fluid-like soft matters, such as dust-reducing agents (surfactant solution) and dust-suppressing foams. The second is polymer-based materials, in which polymers are used as a main component to form high performance solid-like soft matters, such as fire prevention gels, foam gels, gas hole sealing material and resin anchorage agent. The preparation principle, properties and application of these soft matters are comprehensively reviewed. Furthermore, future research directions are also suggested.

A novel process for preparing fireproofing materials from various industrial wastes

In the current study, the possibility of incorporating various industrial wastes into fireproofing materials was investigated. It was found that the newly developed materials showed excellent air sealing and fireproofing performance, with air permeability coefficients 3 to 4 orders of magnitude smaller than traditional fire prevention materials. The influence of different parameters on the air permeability was investigated, and the air sealing mechanisms were clarified through microstructure analysis. In addition, the workability and mechanical properties of the fireproofing materials for practical application in coal mine were studied. The new materials derived from industrial wastes had a compact and monolithic structure, and the excellent air tightness could be attributed to the pozzolanic activity of the industrial wastes and the film-forming property of organic polymers. Among the industrial wastes examined, a special coal fly ash with high pozzolanic activity and little free calcium oxide derived the best product with air permeability coefficient, tensile strength and breaking elongation of 4.17 × 10^-8 m²/s, 2.14 MPa and 48.90%, respectively. This study provides an economical, environmentally friendly and promising approach for industrial wastes recycling.
