Abstract
BACKGROUND Dyslipidemia is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, but its prevalence and determinants among sedentary occupational population are poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and associated factors for dyslipidemia among a sedentary occupational population in Shanghai, China. METHODS We collected data from 35,950 sedentary occupational workers on their demographics, social, medical, and family history, lifestyle, anthropometry, and biochemistry. We used the 2016 Chinese guideline for the management of dyslipidemia in adults to define dyslipidemia and its subtypes. We performed multivariate logistic regression to examine the factors associated with dyslipidemia. RESULTS The prevalence of dyslipidemia was 29.10%, with 15.86% for high triglycerides (TG), 6.43% for high total cholesterol (TC), 5.37% for high low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and 14.68% for low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). Men had a significantly higher prevalence of dyslipidemia than women (39.64% vs. 12.43%, P < 0.01). Factors associated with dyslipidemia included older age, being married, longer sedentary time while resting, frequent intake of animal viscera, current smoking, hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. Current drinking was associated with a 1.24 times higher prevalence of high TG (P < 0.01). Current smokers were less likely to have low HDL-C than non-smokers. CONCLUSIONS Our present study, in a population of 35,950 sedentary occupational workers from Shanghai, demonstrated a prevalence of dyslipidemia, but lower than in other previous studies without the limitation of occupational characteristics. Prevention and control measures for dyslipidemia should take into account the characteristics and related factors for this population group.

Abstract
Cardiovascular risk factors and diseases are the most prevalent health conditions in train drivers. A comparative cross-sectional study was carried out to estimate the prevalence of some cardiovascular risk factors among train drivers. A pre-designed questionnaire was used to collect socio-demographic and occupational data. Physical activity and dietary habits were assessed, psychological distress was measured. Out of 100 recruited train drivers, 62% had obesity, 46% were hypertensive, 72.8% had dyslipidemia, and 71% had mild and/or moderate level of psychological distress. Being a train driver is independently associated with the likelihood of having obesity (AOR = 14.2) and psychological distress (AOR = 6.6). The prevalence of various cardiovascular risk factors was significantly higher among train drivers than the comparison group. Being a train driver is independently associated with obesity and psychological distress.

Abstract
Background Injecting drug use (IDU) is associated with several cardiometabolic risks. We aimed to measure the independent effects of IDU behaviour and related factors on serum lipid profile among people who inject drugs (PWIDs). Methods We did a longitudinal study with six follow-up measurements at an interval of 2 months among 104 PWIDs from 11 selected hotspots under two blocks in West Bengal, India. Generalized estimating equations with robust standard errors analysed the effect of addiction habits on lipid profile parameters. Results The mean (SD) age of the participants was 27.6 (5.24) years, 36.5% married and 44.3% were unemployed at the time of recruitment. At the baseline, the mean (SD) body mass index (BMI) and fasting blood sugar (FBS) were 20.0 (1.82) kg/m2 and 112.0 (15.90) mg/dl, respectively. The mean duration of drug use was 2.5 (1.20) years. While 62.5% had normal triglyceride (TG), 14.4% had high total cholesterol (TC) and 69.2% had dyslipidaemia at the baseline. Adjusted for age, BMI, FBS and other addiction-related variables, models showed that longer duration of drug use (>3 years) resulted in higher levels of TG, higher TC-to-high-density lipoprotein ratio and dyslipidaemia. Tobacco use and high FBS level were also risk factors for dyslipidaemia. Conclusions Higher duration of IDU, tobacco use and higher FBS were associated with deranged lipid profile among PWIDs.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome is a growing epidemic that increases the risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke, and mortality. It is diagnosed by the presence of three or more of the following risk factors: 1) obesity, with an emphasis on central adiposity, 2) high blood pressure, 3) hyperglycemia, 4) dyslipidemia, with regard to reduced high-density lipoprotein concentrations, and 5) dyslipidemia, with regard to elevated triglycerides. Smoking is one lifestyle factor that can increase the risk for metabolic syndrome as it has been shown to exert negative effects on abdominal obesity, blood pressure, blood glucose concentrations, and blood lipid profiles. Smoking may also negatively affect other factors that influence glucose and lipid metabolism including lipoprotein lipase, adiponectin, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha. Some of these smoking-related outcomes may be reversed with smoking cessation, thus reducing the risk for metabolic disease; however, metabolic syndrome risk may initially increase post cessation, possibly due to weight gain. Therefore, these findings warrant the need for more research on the development and efficacy of smoking prevention and cessation programs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is composed of a collection of risk factors for heart diseases and diabetes. In recent decades, metabolic syndrome has been identified as one of the important risk factors leading to the development of work-related diseases. OBJECTIVE Since few studies have been conducted on evaluating the prevalence of MetS among Iranian workers, this cross-sectional study aimed at assessing the prevalence of MetS and the factors affecting it among Iranian steel workers. METHODS This study was carried out on 510 employees working in a large steel producing company. The data pertaining to blood pressure, triglycerides, cholesterol, glucose, and demographic information were collected and the Adult Treatment Panel (ATP III) criteria were implemented to diagnose MetS. RESULTS The prevalence of Mets was obtained equal to 13% and a significant positive relationship was observed between age and the prevalence of metabolic syndrome. From among MetS elements, low HDL cholesterol and increased waist circumference were recognized as the most and the least frequently involved elements with 39.3% and 6.5% prevalence, respectively. Chi-square test was run and the results showed that the prevalence of MetS and some of its components rose at higher BMI values. It was also indicated that MetS and its components had no significant relationship with shift work. CONCLUSION The current findings revealed that the prevalence of MetS increased with aging. Low HDL and high triglycerides levels were among the main risk factors for MetS. Therefore, considering these risk factors, it should be attempted to develop relevant strategies at workplace to encourage workers to go for a healthier lifestyle so that they can prevent the incidence of MetS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND No study has reported the association between secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in self-reported never smokers verified by both self-reported questionnaire and urine cotinine. METHODS A total of 118,609 self-reported and cotinine-verified never smokers (38,385 male; age 34.8±7.1 years) who participated in the Kangbuk Samsung Health Study between 2011 and 2016 were included. Cotinine-verified never smokers were defined as individuals with urinary cotinine <50 ng/mL. SHS exposure was defined as current exposure to passive smoking indoors at home or workplace. RESULTS Prevalence of SHS exposure in the overall population was 22.6% (27.4% for males and 20.3% for females (P<0.001). The overall prevalence of MetS was 6.8% and was higher in males than in females (10.7% vs. 4.9%, P<0.001). In both genders, MetS prevalence was higher in the SHS exposure group than the non-SHS exposure group (11.3% vs. 10.4%, P=0.010 for males; 5.8% vs. 4.6%, P<0.001 for females). However, there was significant gender interaction for the association between SHS exposure and MetS (P for interaction=0.010). In the multivariate regression analyses, SHS exposure was associated with increased MetS odds only in females (odds ratio [95% confidence interval], 1.02 [0.94 to 1.11] in male vs. 1.17 [1.06 to 1.29] in female). In particular, females with SHS exposure of ≥1 hour/day and ≥3 times showed increased odds of MetS compared with those without SHS exposure (1.22 [1.02 to 1.45], 1.30 [1.14 to 1.49]). CONCLUSION This cross-sectional study showed that SHS exposure was significantly associated with prevalence of MetS in self-reported and cotinine-verified female never smokers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Smoking is the most preventable cause of most chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease (CVD). Dyslipidemia is also an important risk factor for CVD. Yet, research has provided contradicting findings regarding the association between smoking and blood lipids. This paper examines the relationship between dyslipidemia and smoking based on the results of a cross-sectional sample of a Kurdish population in western Iran. METHODS This population-based study was derived from the recruitment phase of Ravansar Non-Communicable Disease (RaNCD) cohort study. Logistic regression model adjusted by confounding variables was used to determine the relationship between smoking and blood lipid components. In addition, dose-response relationship between blood lipids and the number of smoked cigarettes was evaluated. RESULTS For the purpose of this study, 7586 participants were examined. The lifetime prevalence of smoking was 19.9%, and 11.8% were current smokers. The prevalence of dyslipidemia in current smokers (54.9%) was higher than former smokers (43.9%) and in turn former smokers higher than non-smokers (38.0%). Current smokers had greater risk of abnormal HDL cholesterol [OR (95% CI), 2.28(1.98 -2.62)] and triglyceride [OR (95% CI), 1.37(1.15 -1.67)] compared to non-smokers. There was no significant difference in total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol between the two groups. A dose-response relationship was found between the number of cigarettes smoked and HDL-C and TG but no relationship was observed in terms of total cholesterol and LDL-C. CONCLUSIONS As compared to non-smokers, current smokers and former smokers had abnormal HDL-C and triglyceride and abnormal total cholesterol and triglyceride, respectively. After quitting smoking, heavy smokers showed a more normal HDL-C and total cholesterol levels than the people who tended to smoke a lower number of cigarettes per day.

Abstract
Objective: To assess age standardized prevalence of tobacco use in urban and rural areas of Pakistan. Methods: This is a sub-study of second National Diabetes Survey of Pakistan (NDSP) 2016-2017. Prevalence of tobacco, ex-tobacco and non-tobacco users was determined in urban/rural areas of four provinces (Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Baluchistan) of Pakistan amongst people aged greater than or equal to 20 years. Information regarding tobacco and non-tobacco users were obtained from second NDSP (2016-2017) predesigned questionnaire. Detailed methodology for demographic, anthropometric and biochemical parameters remained same as reported in second NDSP (2016-2017). Results: The age-standardized prevalence of tobacco use in Pakistan was found to be 13.4%. Tobacco use in urban areas was 16.3% and rural areas was 11.7%. Tobacco use in urban and rural males was 26.1% and 24.1%, while in females was 7.7% and 3.1%, respectively. The age-standardized prevalence of ex-tobacco use in Pakistan was found to be 2.3%. Ex-tobacco use in urban areas was 2.6% and rural areas was 2.3%. Similarly, ex-tobacco use in urban and rural males was 4.6% and 4.6%, while in females was 0.7% and 0.5%, respectively. Multinomial logistic regression analysis shows that increasing age does not relate towards addiction of tobacco. Males were found to be 7 times (OR 6.94, 95% CI 5.68-8.49) and urban residents twice (OR 2.09, 95% CI 1.73-2.52) more tobacco users than females and those living in rural areas, respectively. From the likelihood ratio test, all variables were found to be statistically significant except for dysglycemia, dyslipidemia and hypertension. Conclusion: The prevalence of tobacco use is high. As a sub paper of a large national survey, this evidence is expected to serve as an important tool to plan larger studies leading in turn to develop strategies for a successful tobacco control program in the country.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Unevenly socioeconomic development and nutrition transition might bring large variations in the epidemiology of dyslipidemia. We aimed to estimate the prevalence, awareness, treatment and control of dyslipidemia in different socioeconomic statuses and geographic regions in China, and to assess the associated factors and comorbidities of dyslipidemia. METHODS We included participants aged 45 years and above from a nationally representative investigation: the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study 2011. Dyslipidemia was defined based on the 2016 guideline of Chinese Prevention and Treatment of Dyslipidemia in adults. Multivariable logistic regression was adopted to assess the potentially associated factors and commodities of dyslipidemia. RESULTS In 2010, the prevalence of dyslipidemia was 42.84% among people aged 45 years and above. Low level of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) was the most common type of dyslipidemia. The awareness, treatment and control rates among dyslipidemic subjects were 20.27%, 14.41% and 4.94%, respectively. In dyslipidemic patients who were under treatment, the control rate was 34.26%. People aged 50-59 years were at a significantly higher risk of dyslipidemia than those aged 45-49 years. Male gender, living in North China, overweight, obesity, central obesity, hypertension, diabetes and hyperuricemia were significantly associated with a higher risk of dyslipidemia. Current alcohol drinking and underweight were linked to a lower prevalence of dyslipidemia. CONCLUSIONS Our study revealed a high prevalence of dyslipidemia among middle-aged and older Chinese. The awareness, treatment and control rates were far from ideal and geographic inequality was highlighted. More efforts are needed to prevent and manage dyslipidemia in China.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence, awareness, and control of hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia in Korea according to sex and age, and to identify factors that were associated with the prevalence, awareness, and control of these cardiovascular risk factors among middle-aged Koreans.A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using 2013 data from the National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort (NHIS-NSC) database. A total of 136,755 individuals were considered eligible based on no history of stroke or heart disease, age of 40 to 64 years at the examination, and completion of health examinations. Data regarding demographic factors and cardiovascular risk factors had been obtained using questionnaires, physical examinations, and blood tests.Hypertension was the most prevalent condition among middle-aged Koreans (25.76%), followed by dyslipidemia (16.58%) and diabetes (10.22%). Among these three conditions, dyslipidemia was associated with the lowest awareness rates (24.14%). Hypertension and diabetes were more prevalent among men than among women, although the prevalence of dyslipidemia was higher among women > 50 years old. The prevalence of hypertension and diabetes increased with advancing age among men and women, although the prevalence of dyslipidemia decreased with age among men (highest prevalence: 50.59% among men aged between 40 and 44 years). Among Korean men (relative to women), the odds ratios were 1.50 for hypertension, 1.96 for diabetes, and 0.82 for dyslipidemia. Age, central obesity, and body mass index were significantly associated with the development of all 3 conditions.There are sex- and age-specific patterns in the prevalence, awareness, and control of hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia in Korea. Dyslipidemia is becoming increasingly common although most middle-aged Koreans are not aware of this condition leading to low control rate. These results may help identify population subgroups at a high risk of hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia, and may guide the management of cardiovascular disease in Korea.

Abstract
AIM To explore possible inter-relationships of various biomarkers of inflammation and lifestyle and other cardiovascular risk factors (age, gender, smoking history, hypertension, Type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, alteration of circadian rhythms, body mass index, calf circumference, thigh circumference, abdominal circumference) in the Mugello study oldest old. METHODS In 399 noninstitutionalized nonagenarians (291 women), whole blood cells, mean platelet volume, C-reactive protein, uric acid, gamma-glutamyl transferase were assessed. RESULTS Aging resulted as the only independent determinant for uric acid (<0.05), and abdominal circumference for C-reactive protein. Female gender (<0.01), and thigh circumference (<0.05) remained as determinants for mean platelet volume, age (<0.01), and male gender (<0.01) for gamma-glutamyl transferase, and Type 2 diabetes (≤0.01) and alteration of circadian rhythms (<0.05) for whole blood cells. CONCLUSION Several inflammatory parameters remain associated with adverse lifestyle and cardiovascular risk factors even among nonagenarians.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine the individual and combined influences of smoking and alcohol consumption on lipid profile in male adults in northwest rural China. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. METHODS In total, 4614 subjects were enrolled in the cross-sectional study, performed between 2008 and 2012. The present study examined males aged ≥18 years from northwest rural China (n = 707). Data on current smoking and drinking status were collected. Logistic regression was used to estimate the individual and combined influences of smoking and alcohol consumption on lipid profile. Age, ethnic group, educational background, smoking (or alcohol consumption), waist circumference, body mass index, blood pressure and fasting blood glucose were adjusted as confounders. RESULTS Total cholesterol (TC)/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio, triglycerides (TG)/HDL-C ratio, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C)/HDL-C ratio and visceral adiposity index (VAI) were significantly higher in smokers than in non-smokers, whereas HDL-C was lower in smokers. TG/HDL-C ratio, LDL-C/HDL-C ratio, TG, lipid accumulation product and VAI were significantly higher in drinkers than non-drinkers. After adjustment for confounders, significant relationships were observed between smoking status and any dyslipidemia, low HDL-C and high VAI (odds ratios [ORs]: 2.53 [95% confidence interval {CI}: 1.25-5.15], 6.13 [95% CI: 2.84-13.25] and 4.39 [95% CI: 2.02-9.54], respectively). The OR for any dyslipidaemia was 1.94 (95% CI: 1.09-3.48) for subjects who smoke and drank alcohol compared with subjects who did not smoke or drink alcohol. CONCLUSIONS Abnormalities in lipid profile are correlated with smoking and alcohol consumption, which calls for intervention strategies to prevent dyslipidaemia and control risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

Abstract
The association of ADP-ribosylation factor-like 15 (ARL15) rs6450176 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and serum lipid profiles has never been studied in the Chinese population. The present study was undertaken to detect the association of ARL15 rs6450176 SNP and several environmental factors with serum lipid levels in the Jing and Han populations. Genotypes of the SNP were determined in 726 unrelated subjects of Jing nationality and 726 participants of Han nationality. The genotypic and allelic frequencies of the SNP in Jing but not in Han were different between males and females (P < 0.001 and P < 0.05; respectively). The G allele carriers in Han had lower serum total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and apolipoprotein (Apo) B levels, and higher ApoA1/ApoB ratio than the G allele non-carriers (P < 0.05-0.01). The G allele carriers in Jing had lower serum TC, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), ApoA1, ApoB levels and higher ApoA1/ApoB ratio than the G allele non-carriers (P < 0.05 for all). Subgroup analyses showed that the G allele carriers had lower TC and LDL-C levels in Han males; lower LDL-C and ApoB levels in Han females; lower ApoB levels and ApoA1/ApoB ratio in Jing males; and lower LDL-C levels in Jing females than the G allele non-carriers (P < 0.05-0.01). Multiple linear regression analysis showed that serum TC, LDL-C, ApoB levels and the ApoA1/ApoB ratio in Han; and TC, HDL-C and ApoA1 levels in Jing were correlated with the genotypes of the ARL15 rs6450176 SNP (P < 0.05-0.001). Serum lipid parameters were also associated with several environmental factors in both ethnic groups. These findings indicated that there may be a racial/ethnic- and/or sex-specific association of the ARL15 rs6450176 SNP and serum lipid levels.

Abstract
Many herbal medicines have been recommended for the treatment of dyslipidemia. The antilipidemic effect of hydroethanolic extract of pomegranate peel (Punica granatum L.) was investigated in high lipid diet fed male rats. Intraperitoneally administration of pomegranate peel extract (50, 100, 200, and 300 mg/kg body weight) for 23 days on the levels of serum cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL, HDL, alkaline phosphatase (AP), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) in high lipid diet fed male rats was evaluated. Treatment of pomegranate extract decreased body weight in treated rats, significantly. Administration of the plant extract significantly decreased serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-C, alkaline phosphatise, AST, and ALT levels, whereas it increased serum HDL-C in high lipid diet fed rats in comparison to saline control group. Also, histopathological study showed that treatment of pomegranate peel extract attenuates liver damage in high lipid diet fed rats in comparison to saline group. It is concluded that the plant should be considered as an excellent candidate for future studies on dyslipidemia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to investigate recent trends in the prevalence and parameters of dyslipidemia and rates of lipid-lowering medication use in Korean adults. Trends in lipid profiles in subjects with hypertension, diabetes or obesity were also studied. METHODS Data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2005, 2008 and 2010 were used in this study. A total of 17 009 subjects participated in this study. RESULTS There was a declining trend in the prevalence of dyslipidemia and an increasing trend in the rates of use of lipid-lowering medication among Korean adults. In both men and women, the age-adjusted mean high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level linearly increased. There was a significantly decreasing trend in the age-adjusted mean triglycerides in women and age-adjusted mean lipid-related ratios in both sexes. The age-adjusted mean total cholesterol level showed a slightly increasing trend and the age-adjusted mean low-density lipoprotein cholesterol level was not changed in both sexes. These patterns persisted among subjects not taking lipid-lowering medication. The favorable trends were also observed in subjects with hypertension, diabetes and obesity. CONCLUSIONS Our study showed favorable trends in the prevalence of dyslipidemia and in several lipid profiles among Korean adults.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study investigated the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and dyslipidemia and various parameters of dyslipidemia among Korean adults. METHODS Data from the 2008-2010 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were used in this study. A total of 19,041 Korean adults greater than 19years old participated in the study. The SES was assessed by monthly household income and education level. The relationship of SES to the risk of dyslipidemia was assessed with multivariate logistic regression analysis after adjusting for potential confounders. RESULTS The prevalence of dyslipidemia was 37.4% among Korean adults. In men, household income level was positively associated with prevalence and risks of several parameters of dyslipidemia, and education level had positive associations with the risks of dyslipidemia and parameters of dyslipidemia. However, low SES was linked to increased prevalence and risks of dyslipidemia (P for trend<0.05) and parameters of dyslipidemia in women. CONCLUSIONS Socioeconomic disparities in dyslipidemia were found in the Korean population. Also, there were gender differences in the relationship between SES and dyslipidemia. These disparities should be considered when performing risk calculations and screening for dyslipidemia, which will ultimately help prevent cardiovascular disease.
