Abstract
Background The study introduced the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory™ (PedsQL™) brain tumor module for the first time in China. Further, the Chinese version of the PedsQL™ brain tumor module was developed and its feasibility, reliability, and validity were investigated. Methods A total 129 cases completed the assessment. Feasibility was evaluated according to the percentage of missing items and the time required to complete the questionnaire. Internal consistency, retest reliability, and split-half reliability were tested to confirm reliability. We evaluated validity by testing content validity, construct validity, and criterion-related validity. The consistency between the child-self and parent-proxy reports was analyzed by calculating the correlation coefficient (r value) between them. Results The Cronbach's alpha values for all subscales were above 0.7 and many subscales scored more than 0.9. The intra-class correlation coefficients of retest reliability were higher than 0.9. The split-half reliability scores for all subscales were higher than 0.6. The factor-item correlations ranged between 0.575-0.922 in the child report and 0.492-0.949 in the parent report. Exploratory factor analyses produced five factors corresponding to each subscale in the child report and six factors in the parent report. Conclusion The feasibility, reliability, and validity of the Chinese PedsQL™ brain tumor module were ascertained through this study. This module can be used to effectively monitor children with brain tumors and conduct descriptive or exploratory studies to determine the risk factors affecting their quality of life. This would help develop a new basis for formulating measures to improve patient prognosis and quality of life.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Assessing health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is an increasingly important aspect of standard care in pediatric oncology. Currently, there is a gap in the availability of French questionnaires to assess the quality of life of French-speaking pediatric brain tumor (PBT) patients, which has important implications in the care of this population. The first aim of this study was to translate the original English Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory™ (PedsQL) brain tumor module version into French. The second aim was to describe the stability, repeatability and convergent validity of the French PedsQL brain tumor module. METHODS A total of 61 PBT patients were included in this study. Among them, 15 children and 20 parents participated in the translation process. As part of the validation study, 48 children and 48 parents answered the PedsQL brain tumor module twice, and the PedsQL generic core scales and the patient-reported outcomes measurement information system (PROMIS-37 pediatric profile v2.0) questionnaire were administered once to the participants. The mean age of the 25 boys and 23 girls was 8.3 ± 4.8 years. For temporal stability, we used intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs), for repeatability, we used the Bland and Altman method to assess the accuracy at a 1-week interval, and we used Pearson's correlation coefficients for convergent validity between the PedsQL brain tumor module, PedsQL general module and the PROMIS. RESULTS Temporal stability for the parent proxy-reports (average ICC = 0.98) and the child self-reports (average ICC = 0.98) were excellent. There was a high absolute stability over a 1-week interval for the parent proxy-reports (ICC > 0.96) and child self-reports (ICC > 0.96). Convergent validity between parent proxy-reports and child self-reports was supported by positive correlations for five subscales. Children reported higher scores in cognitive problems and the movement and balance parameters than their parents and reported lower scores on the worry parameter than their parents. CONCLUSION The strong psychometric properties of the French version of the PedsQL brain tumor module indicate that it is a validate and reliable questionnaire to measure HRQoL in PBT patients. The availability of a French version of the PedsQL brain tumor module supports the wider dissemination of the assessment of HRQOL in PBT patients.

Abstract
Anxiety has been identified as one of the most severe and long-lasting symptoms experienced by hospitalized children with cancer. Self-reports are especially important for documenting emotional and abstract concepts, such as anxiety. Children may not always be able to communicate their symptoms due to language difficulties, a lack of developmental language skills, or the severity of their illness. Instruments with sufficient psychometric quality and pictorial support may address this communication challenge. The purpose of this review was to systematically search the published literature and identify validated and reliable self-report instruments available for children aged 5–18 years to use in the assessment of their anxiety to ensure they receive appropriate anxiety-relief intervention in hospital. What validated self-report instruments can children with cancer use to self-report anxiety in the hospital setting? Which of these instruments offer pictorial support? Eight instruments were identified, but most of the instruments lacked pictorial support. The Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and Pediatric Quality of Life (PedsQL™) 3.0 Brain Tumor Module and Cancer Module proved to be useful in hospitalized children with cancer, as they provide pictorial support. It is recommended that faces or symbols be used along with the VAS, as pictures are easily understood by younger children. Future studies could include the adaptation of existing instruments in digital e-health tools.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The MD Anderson Symptom Inventory for Brain Tumor (MDASI-BT) module is a widely used instrument for measuring symptom burden and interference of daily activities in brain tumor patients. This study aims to develop and validate its Japanese version (MDASI-BT-Japanese). METHODS Following forward and backward translation of the original MDASI-BT into Japanese, understandability and feasibility were assessed by cognitive debriefing. Subsequently, patients with brain tumors were asked to fill out MDASI-BT-Japanese and European Quality of Life-5 Dimensions (EQ-5D). Feasibility, reliability and validity of MDASI-BT-Japanese were assessed. RESULTS Cognitive debriefing confirmed overall ease of completion and good understandability. The study population composed of 140 patients with brain tumors (most commonly gliomas). The mean symptom severity score and mean interference score were 1.9 ± 1.7 and 2.8 ± 2.7, respectively. The top items included distress and drowsiness for symptom severity and general activity and work for interference. The median time required was 4 minutes (range, 0.5-30), and missing values were seen in 1%. Internal consistency was proven by excellent Cronbach's coefficient alpha (0.94 for symptom severity, 0.92 for interference). Test-retest reliability was assessed with acceptable intra-class correlation coefficient (mean, 0.76). Correlation efficient ranged between 0.7 and 0.9 for convergent validity. Known-group validity was confirmed by significantly different mean symptom severity score and mean interference score among patients with different performance status. As evidence of concurrent validity, MDASI-BT-Japanese correlated with EQ-5D in the hypothesized magnitude and direction. CONCLUSIONS The newly developed MDASI-BT-Japanese has demonstrated feasibility, reliability and validity in evaluation of clinical benefit in Japanese-speaking brain tumor patients.

Abstract
Background Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) refer to any report of the status of a patient’s health condition, health behavior, or experience with healthcare directly from the patient, without interpretation of the patient’s response by a clinician or any other external party. While many PROs, such as the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL), were originally administered in paper-and-pencil format, these are now available as electronic versions (ePROs). Although ePROs might well have used the same structure as their paper versions, we developed an alternate ePedsQL incorporating three software functions: 1) a non-forcing non-response alert, 2) a conditional question branch of the School Functioning Scale that only displays for (pre) school children, and 3) a vertical item-by-item display for small-screen devices. This report evaluated the effect of these functions on item non-response rate, survey completion time, and user experience. Methods All surveys were conducted via the online/computer mode. We compared the dynamic format containing the three functions with the basic format in a randomized comparative study in 2803 children and 6289 caregivers in Japan. Results We found that the non-response alert lowered the item non-response rate (0.338% to 0.046%, t = − 4.411, p < 0.001 by generalized linear mixed model analysis). The conditional question branch had mixed effects on survey completion time depending on the respondents’ age. Surprisingly, respondents rated the vertical question display for handheld devices less legible than the matrix format. Further, multigroup structural equation modelling revealed that the same configuration for both formats showed an acceptable fit (CFI 0.933, RMSEA 0.060, SRMR 0.038) but the errors of observed variables were larger for the dynamic format than the basic format. Conclusions We confirmed the robustness of the ePedsQL in different formats. The non-response rate of ePedsQL was very low even in the absence of an alert. The branch and item-by-item display were effective but unnecessary for all populations. Our findings further understanding of how humans respond to special software functions and different digital survey formats and provide new insight on how the three tested functions might be most successfully implemented.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with childhood cancer and their families frequently experience psychosocial distress associated with cancer and its treatment. We thus examined the reliability and validity of a Japanese version of the Psychosocial Assessment Tool, which was designed to screen for psychosocial risk factors among families of children with cancer. METHODS Forward-backward translation was used to develop the Japanese version of the Psychosocial Assessment Tool. We conducted a cross-sectional study. Mothers (N = 117), who were the primary caregivers of children with cancer, completed the Japanese version of the Psychosocial Assessment Tool and other measures to establish validity. The internal consistency and 2-week test-retest reliability of the Japanese version of the Psychosocial Assessment Tool were also examined. RESULTS The internal consistency of the Japanese version of the Psychosocial Assessment Tool total score was sufficient (Kuder-Richardson 20 coefficient = 0.84); however, the subscales 'structure and resources,' 'stress reactions' and 'family beliefs' were less than optimal (Kuder-Richardson 20 coefficients = 0.03, 0.49 and 0.49, respectively). The test-retest reliability for the Japanese version of the Psychosocial Assessment Tool total score was sufficient (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.92). Significant correlations with the criteria measures indicated the validity of the Japanese version of the Psychosocial Assessment Tool total score. The optimal cut-off score for screening mothers with high psychosocial risk was 0.9/1.0, which was associated with 92% sensitivity and 63% specificity. CONCLUSIONS This study indicated that the Japanese version of the Psychosocial Assessment Tool is a valid and reliable tool to screen mothers for elevated distress.

Abstract
Background: Given the risk of physical and psychosocial health that emerge in adolescents that are continuing into adulthood, identifying and addressing early signs of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) decline provides an opportunity to ensure that young people have a healthier progression through adolescence. Aim: To investigate the association between demographic characteristics, lifestyle health behaviours, and HRQoL of adolescents who live in Asia Pacific region, including Hong Kong in China, Beijing in China, Akashi in Japan, Seoul in South Korea, and Bangkok in Thailand. Methods: A cross-sectional self-reported survey carried out in a sample of 2296 adolescents that were aged 9-16 years (mean= 12.0; standard deviation [SD] = 1.63) was conducted in the five cities of the Asia Pacific region between January and August 2017. Demographic characteristics, adolescent lifestyle behaviours, and HRQoL were measured with demographic questionnaire, Adolescent Lifestyle Questionnaire's (ALQ) seven domains and Paediatric Quality of Life's (PedsQL 4.0) global score, respectively. Mixed multilevel model (MMLM) was used to fit the data. Results: After adjusting the demographic variables, one score increase in ALQ physical participation, nutrition, social support, and identity awareness are associated with an increase in PedsQL global score. On the contrary, one score increase in ALQ health practices is associated with a decrease in the PedsQL global score. The estimated mean of PedsQL global score of South Korea, Beijing, and Japan were better, while the score of Thailand and Hong Kong were poorer. Conclusions: Differentiating the impacts of promoting health behaviours among different countries can help in better understanding the health needs of adolescents in each country, especially in the Asia Pacific region, so that adequate and relevant resources can be allocated to reduce health-risk taking behaviours among this vulnerable group for health-promoting strategies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is an important outcome in solid organ transplantation. This study evaluated and explored the factors of generic and transplant-specific HRQOL in Japanese pediatric and adolescent patients with biliary atresia (BA) after living donor liver transplant (LDLT). METHODS A cross-sectional survey using anonymous questionnaires was completed between April and July 2015. Patient medical records were accessed. The Japanese version of Pediatric Quality of Life InventoryTM Generic Core Scales and Transplant Modules (child self-report and parent proxy-report) was administered. RESULTS Participants consisted of 75 patients (mean age at survey, 9.6 years) and 74 parents. Japanese patients reported higher generic and transplant-specific HRQOL (total score) than that reported by US patients with BA after LT (US I; age at survey, 7.2 years) and by US patients after solid organ transplant (US II; age at survey, 11.3 years; LT, 53.8%; effect size, 0.55-0.96). Japanese parents, however, rated their children's generic HRQOL (total score) similar to that rated by the US I and II parents (0.13 and 0.30, respectively) and reported lower transplant-specific HRQOL (total score) than that reported by US II (0.26). Although the number of types of prescribed drugs was a common factor in HRQOL, most demographic and medical factors (e.g. child's age at survey and consultation frequency) varied with reporter (i.e. patients and parents). CONCLUSIONS The levels and factors of generic and transplant-specific HRQOL of Japanese pediatric and adolescent patients with BA after LDLT varied with reporter (i.e. patients or parents).

Abstract
BACKGROUND Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is an important outcome in pediatric solid organ transplantation. Considering the emerging problems after transplantation, an evaluation of transplant-specific aspects of HRQOL is essential, but no validated HRQOL measure is available in Japan. The aim of this study was therefore to develop the Japanese version of the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory™ (PedsQL) Transplant Module Child Self-Report and to investigate its feasibility, reliability, and validity. METHODS Based on the PedsQL linguistic validation process, the Japanese version of the PedsQL Transplant Module was developed through translation and cognitive interviews (patient testing). The scale's reliability and validity were investigated, using statistical analyses of field tests of the target population. RESULTS Eighty-seven pairs of pediatric liver-transplant recipients and their parents participated in the field test. The pediatric patients completed the measure in 3-7 min, and the rate of missing items was low (0.27%). Excellent internal consistency and test-retest reliability were confirmed. Known-groups validity, concurrent validity, and convergent and discriminant validity also were confirmed. CONCLUSIONS Excellent feasibility, reliability, and validity of this Japanese self-report version of the PedsQL Transplant Module Child Self-Report were verified. As a measure of transplant-specific aspects of HRQOL in Japanese pediatric patients who have undergone organ transplants, the Japanese version of the PedsQL Transplant Module is appropriate for use in clinical and research settings.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The present study aimed to assess the reliability and validity of the Japanese version of KIDSCREEN-52 (J-KIDSCREEN-52), a generic questionnaire used to assess health-related quality of life (HRQOL) among children/adolescents and parents/proxies. METHODS We conducted a school-based study, in which 1564 children and adolescents aged 8-18 years and their 1326 parents participated from five schools. They were asked to complete two questionnaires (the J-KIDSCREEN-52 and the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL)), and the Oslo 3-Item Social Support (OSS-3) scale. Internal consistency reliability was measured using the Cronbach's alpha coefficient. Test-retest reliability was assessed by the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) in the one-way random effects model in sub-samples taken approximately three to four weeks apart. Agreement between the ratings of the child and parent was evaluated using the ICC in the two-way mixed effects model among 681 pairs. RESULTS For the overall sample, Cronbach's alpha values of 10 dimensions were ≥0.70, except for one dimension. Test-retest ICCs were ≥0.60 for nearly all dimensions. Correlation coefficients between the J-KIDSCREEN-52 and the PedsQL dimensions indicated a reasonable convergent validity. Parent ratings corresponded well with child ratings (ICC = 0.38-0.62). Statistically significant differences in mean T scores were dependent on gender for seven dimensions, age group for all dimensions, and health status for two dimensions. CONCLUSIONS The J-KIDSCREEN-52 questionnaires child/adolescent and parent/proxy versions demonstrated acceptable levels of reliability and validity.

Abstract
Background There are very few reliable and valid measures in Japan assessing health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in children with cancer. The present study aimed to develop a Japanese version of the Minneapolis-Manchester Quality of Life Survey of Health Adolescent Form (MMQL-AF), which is a measure for assessing the HRQOL of childhood cancer survivors, and investigate its reliability and validity. Methods Participants were 141 children with cancer who had been off therapy for more than one year and 183 healthy controls. The reliability and internal consistency of the measure were assessed through test-retest methods using Cronbach’s coefficient alpha and intra-class correlation coefficients (ICCs). For validation of the measure, factorial validity, concurrent validity using the Japanese version of PedsQL 4.0 Generic Core Scales (PedsQL-J), and discriminant validity using comparisons between children with cancer and healthy controls were investigated. Results Of the 46 items in the original version, 44 items were determined to comprise the Japanese version of the MMQL-AF. Cronbach’s coefficient alphas for each subscale were high ranging from 0.83 to 0.89. Test-retest reliability ranged between ICC 0.79 to 0.96. Investigation of concurrent validity using the PedsQL-J demonstrated strong correlations in physical functions and moderate correlations for other factors. A significant difference was observed between children with cancer and healthy controls. Conclusions Thus, the Japanese version of the MMQL-AF served as a self-evaluation questionnaire that allowed for practical, comprehensive, and multidimensional measurement of HRQOL specific to childhood cancer survivors.

Abstract
PURPOSE To understand the influence of disease and treatment on the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of children with brain tumors, compared to the HRQOL of children with other cancers, from the viewpoints of children and parents. METHODS A total of 133 children aged 5-18 years and 165 parents of children aged 2-18 completed questionnaires of the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory Cancer Module (Pain and Hurt, Nausea, Procedural Anxiety, Treatment Anxiety, Worry, Cognitive Problems, Perceived Physical Appearance, and Communication scales); higher scores indicate a better HRQOL. The Cancer Module scores, weighted by age and treatment status, were compared to those obtained in a previous study of children with other cancers (mostly leukemia). RESULTS The weighted mean scores for Pain and Hurt (effect size d = 0.26) and Nausea (d = 0.23) from child reports and the scores for Nausea (d = 0.28) from parent reports were higher for children with brain tumors than scores for children with other cancers. The scores for Procedural Anxiety (d = -0.22) and Treatment Anxiety (d = -0.32) from parent reports were lower for parents of children with brain tumors than the scores for parents of children with other cancers. The child-reported Pain and Hurt score of the Cancer Module was higher (d = 0.29) and in less agreement (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.43) with scores from the Brain Tumor Module, indicating that assessments completed with the Cancer Module misesteem pain and hurt problems in children with brain tumors. CONCLUSIONS The profiles of cancer-specific HRQOL in children with brain tumors differ from those of children with other cancers; we therefore suggest that these children receive specific psychological support.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES An appraisal of pediatric cancer-specific quality-of-life (QOL) instruments revealed a lack of clarity about what constitutes QOL in this population. This study addresses this concern by identifying the concepts that underpin the construct of QOL as determined by a content analysis of all patient-reported outcome (PRO) instruments used in childhood cancer research. METHODS A systematic review was performed of key databases (i.e., MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsychINFO) to identify studies of QOL in children with cancer. A content analysis process was used to code and categorize all items from generic and cancer-specified PRO instruments. Our objective was to provide clarification regarding the conceptual underpinnings of these instruments, as well as to help inform the development of theory and contribute to building a conceptual framework of QOL for children with cancer. RESULTS A total of 6,013 English language articles were screened, identifying 148 studies. Ten generic and ten cancer-specific PRO instruments provided 957 items. Content analysis led to the identification of four major domains of QOL (physical, psychological, social, and general health), with 11 subdomains covering 98 different concepts. While all instruments reflected items relating to the broader domains of QOL, there was substantial heterogeneity in terms of the content and variability in the distribution of items. CONCLUSIONS This systematic review and the proposed model represent a useful starting point in the critical appraisal of the conceptual underpinnings of PRO instruments used in pediatric oncology and contribute to the need to place such tools under a critical, yet reflective and analytical lens.

Abstract
PURPOSE To clarify health-related quality of life (HRQOL) by self-evaluation after restorative proctocolectomy with ileal J-pouch anal anastomosis (IPAA) in children with ulcerative colitis, a questionnaire using the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory™ 4.0 (PedsQL) was administered. METHODS The PedsQL was administered to 13 consecutive children (mean age 14.5 years) who underwent IPAA between 2005 and 2010 in our hospital and age-matched healthy controls. The mean duration after IPAA was 2.5 years (range 0.08-6 years) at the time of this study. Healthy children completed the same questionnaire by retrospective imaging during the past 1 month by the PedsQL evaluation policy. RESULTS Patients' total score and each functioning score after IPAA reached the same levels as those in healthy controls. Soiling, pouchitis occurrence, and bowel movements had no significant relationship to the PedsQL total score and each functioning score. CONCLUSIONS Interference of physical activity, emotional status, and social life caused by refractory ulcerative colitis (UC) worsens patients' HRQOL. IPAA could resolve these problems in children with UC and result in an HRQOL comparable with that in healthy children.

Abstract
Background The PedsQL 3.0 Cancer Module is a widely used instrument to measure pediatric cancer specific health-related quality of life (HRQOL) for children aged 2 to 18 years. We developed the Japanese version of the PedsQL Cancer Module and investigated its reliability and validity among Japanese children and their parents. Methods Participants were 212 children with cancer and 253 of their parents. Reliability was determined by internal consistency using Cronbach's coefficient alpha and test-retest reliability using intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC). Validity was assessed through factor validity, convergent and discriminant validity, concurrent validity, and clinical validity. Factor validity was examined by exploratory factor analysis. Convergent and discriminant validity were examined by multitrait scaling analysis. Concurrent validity was assessed using Spearman's correlation coefficients between the Cancer Module and Generic Core Scales, and the comparison of the scores of child self-reports with those of other self-rating depression scales for children. Clinical validity was assessed by comparing the on- and off- treatment scores using Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests. Results Cronbach's coefficient alpha was over 0.70 for the total scale and over 0.60 for each subscale by age except for the 'pain and hurt' subscale for children aged 5 to 7 years. For test-retest reliability, the ICC exceeded 0.70 for the total scale for each age. Exploratory factor analysis demonstrated sufficient factorial validity. Multitrait scaling analysis showed high success rates. Strong correlations were found between the reports by children and their parents, and the scores of the Cancer Module and the Generic Core Scales except for 'treatment anxiety' subscales for child reports. The Depression Self-Rating Scale for Children (DSRS-C) scores were significantly correlated with emotional domains and the total score of the cancer module. Children who had been off treatment over 12 months demonstrated significantly higher scores than those on treatment. Conclusions The results demonstrate the reliability and validity of the Japanese version of the PedsQL Cancer Module among Japanese children.
