Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the relationship between the size of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) condyle and the sagittal disc-condyle position and the relationship between the condylar size and craniofacial structure. METHODS Seventy-four subjects (23.82 ± 3.77 years) underwent cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and lateral cephalograms for orthodontics and volunteered to undergo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Mimics was used to calculate the volume and surface area of the condyle. MRI was used to evaluate the sagittal disc-condyle position. The lateral cephalograms were analyzed by Jarabak analysis. RESULTS The condylar volume and surface area were negatively correlated with the sagittal disc-condyle position. The condylar volume and surface area were positively correlated with Ar-Go, S-Go, and S-Go/N-Me*100% (p < 0.05) and negatively correlated with ∠Ar-Go-Me and ∠N-Go-Me (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION Condylar size was negatively correlated with the sagittal disc-condyle position. The condylar size was correlated with the vertical skeletal pattern.

Abstract
BACKGROUND TMJ morphology/position and trabecular structure are influenced by various factors. The role of the interincisal angle, an indicator of the anterior occlusal relationship, on TMJ remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the morphology, trabecular bone structure, and position of the condyle, as well as the glenoid fossa's morphology in skeletal class II populations with different interincisal angles. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 150 adult patients with normodivergent facial types and skeletal class II malocclusions were selected and divided into three groups based on their interincisal angles: normal, small, and large angle groups. The indexes of TMJ were measured using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) data and analyzed using Dolphin Imaging, Mimics, and ImageJ. RESULTS The small angle group had the smallest anteroposterior diameter (APD), while the large angle group had a greater mediolateral diameter (MLD). The large angle group exhibited significantly the largest maximum axial area, bone surface area, and bone volume (P < 0.05). Small and large angle groups exhibited greater bone trabeculae (Tb. N) and thinner trabecular thickness (Tb. Th). Compared to the normal angle group, the small angle group exhibited a larger horizontal condylar angle and smaller bilateral condylar angles on the axial plane, while the large angle group showed the opposite trend. Small and large angle groups showed a reduced vertical condyle angle on the coronal plane, with the largest reduction observed in the large angle group (P < 0.05). Small and large angle groups had higher heights of the glenoid fossa (GFH). The large angle group exhibited the greatest GFH and width of the glenoid fossa (GFW) (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION The large angle group had elongated oval and large condyles, and deeper glenoid fossae, while a flattened-oval and smaller condyle, and wider and shallower glenoid fossae were observed in the small angle group. Small and large interincisal angle affects the structure of condylar trabeculae, resulting in thinner Tb. Th and greater Th. N. In the condylar position, small and large angle groups exhibit condylar rotation in the axial and coronal planes. Therefore, the interincisal angle affects the morphology, position, and trabecular structure of the TMJ. This implies that we must pay attention to the impact of the interincisal angle on TMJ, and it is crucial to restore the normal interincisal angle during orthodontic treatment.

Abstract
This study compared the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) space between patients with normal and prognathic mandibles. The study included a total of 68 Korean individuals, and the TMJ space was measured using computed tomography. Patients with normal SNB values (normal mandible) were classified into Group 1. Patients with high SNB values (prognathic mandibles) were categorized into Group 2. The TMJ space was defined as the distance between the condylar process and the mandibular fossa, and it was significantly different between Groups 1 and 2 (1.94±0.07 mm versus 1.50±0.05 mm, P< 0.01). This study confirmed that the TMJ space in patients with prognathic mandibles is narrower than that in patients with normal mandibles.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate condylar and glenoid fossa remodeling after bimaxillary orthognathic surgery guided by patient-specific mandibular implants. In total, 18 patients suffering from dentofacial dysmorphism underwent a virtually planned bimaxillary mandibular PSI-guided orthognathic procedure. One month prior to surgery, patients underwent a CBCT scan and optical scans of the dental arches; these datasets were re-acquired 1 month and at least 9 months postsurgery. Three-dimensional models of the condyles, glenoid fossae, and interarticular surface space (IASS) were obtained and compared to evaluate the roto-translational positional discrepancy and surface variation of each condyle and glenoid fossa, and the IASS variation. The condylar position varied by an average of 4.31° and 2.18 mm, mainly due to surgically unavoidable ramus position correction. Condylar resorption remodeling was minimal (average ≤ 0.1 mm), and affected skeletal class III patients the most. Later condylar remodeling was positively correlated with patient age. No significant glenoid fossa remodeling was observed. No postoperative orofacial pain was recorded at clinical follow-up. The procedure was accurate in minimizing the shift in relationship between the bony components of the TMJ and their remodeling, and was effective in avoiding postoperative onset of orofacial pain. An increase in sample size, however, would be useful to confirm our findings.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the association between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in endochondral development-related genes and mandibular condyle shape, size, volume, and symmetry traits. Cone-beam Computed Tomographies and genomic DNA from 118 individuals were evaluated (age range: 15-66 years). Data from twelve 3D landmarks on mandibular condyles were submitted to morphometric analyses including Procrustes fit, principal component analysis, and estimation of centroid sizes and fluctuating asymmetry scores. Condylar volumes were additionally measured. Seven SNPs across BMP2, BMP4, RUNX2 and SMAD6 were genotyped. Linear models were fit to evaluate the effect of the SNPs on the mandibular condyles' quantitative traits. Only the association between BMP2 rs1005464 and centroid size remained significant after adjusting to account for the false discovery rate due to multiple testing. Individuals carrying at least one A allele for this SNP showed larger condylar size than common homozygotes GG (β = 0.043; 95% CI: 0.014-0.071; P value = 0.028). The model including BMP2 rs1005464, age and sex of the participants explained 17% of the variation in condylar size. Shape, volume, and symmetry were not associated with the evaluated SNPs. These results suggest that BMP2 rs1005464 might be associated with variation in the mandibular condyles size.

Abstract
PURPOSE Adult idiopathic condylar resorption (AICR) mainly affects young women, but generally accepted diagnostic standards are lacking. Patients often need temporomandibular joint (TMJ) surgery, and often jaw anatomy is assessed by CT as well as MRI to observe both bone and soft tissue. This study aims to establish reference values for mandible dimensions in women from MRI only and correlate them to, e.g., laboratory parameters and lifestyle, to explore new putative parameters relevant in AICR. MRI-derived reference values could reduce preoperative effort by allowing physicians to rely on only the MRI without additional CT scan. METHODS We analyzed MRI data from a previous study (LIFE-Adult-Study, Leipzig, Germany) of 158 female participants aged 15-40 years (as AICR typically affects young women). The MR images were segmented, and standardized measuring of the mandibles was established. We correlated morphological features of the mandible with a large variety of other parameters documented in the LIFE-Adult study. RESULTS We established new reference values for mandible morphology in MRI, which are consistent with previous CT-based studies. Our results allow assessment of both mandible and soft tissue without radiation exposure. Correlations with BMI, lifestyle, or laboratory parameters could not be observed. Of note, correlation between SNB angle, a parameter often used for AICR assessment, and condylar volume, was also not observed, opening up the question if these parameters behave differently in AICR patients. CONCLUSION These efforts constitute a first step towards establishing MRI as a viable method for condylar resorption assessment.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the treatment effects of a stabilisation splint (SS) with and without arthroscopic disc repositioning (ADR) on condylar bone remodelling in adolescent patients with anterior disc displacement without reduction (ADDwoR). Cone beam computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging were used to analyse condylar bone remodelling, condyle position, and disc position. Twenty-two temporomandibular joints of 14 patients who underwent ADR (age range 12-20 years; mean follow-up 12.5 ± 7.8 months) and 21 temporomandibular joints of 14 patients who did not undergo ADR (age range 13-20 years; mean follow-up 11.1 ± 5.1 months) were included. The change in bone volume (P < 0.001), rate of bone volume change (P < 0.001), and change in condyle height (P = 0.031) were significantly greater in patients with ADR than in those without ADR. The changes in posterior joint space (P = 0.013), superior joint space (P = 0.020), and ratio of condyle sagittal position (P = 0.013) were significantly greater in patients with ADR than in those without ADR. All discs in patients who underwent ADR and one disc in those who did not undergo ADR were backward repositioned. In conclusion, in adolescent patients with ADDwoR, ADR with SS therapy achieved better condyle and disc position than SS therapy alone, and also induced bone generation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to examine the impact of demographic variables on mandibular condyle morphology, a critical factor in orthodontic treatment and maxillofacial surgery. The investigation focuses on the relationship between gender, age, and skeletal class with the morphological dimensions of the condyle, utilizing panoramic radiography as a diagnostic tool. METHODOLOGY A retrospective analysis was conducted on 150 panoramic radiographs from individuals stratified into six groups according to gender and skeletal class. Skeletal classes were determined using Steiner and McNamara cephalometry. The Kodak Carestream software (Rochester, NY: Carestream Health) was employed to measure condylar height, width, and morphology. Statistical evaluations included ANOVA, correlation assessments, and multivariate binary logistic regression to discern the differences and associations among the variables studied. RESULTS The findings revealed notable differences in condylar dimensions between genders across different skeletal classes, with males typically presenting larger condylar dimensions than females. The data also showed a moderate positive correlation between condyle height and width. Round-shaped condyles were the most common form found, with significant gender differences observed in certain skeletal classes. Additionally, logistic regression analysis identified significant associations between gender, age, and condylar width and shape. CONCLUSIONS The study concludes that demographic factors, such as gender and age, significantly affect mandibular condyle morphology. These factors should be carefully considered in clinical evaluations using panoramic radiography to enhance the precision of diagnoses and the effectiveness of subsequent orthodontic and maxillofacial treatments. The results provide valuable insights for healthcare professionals in regions where more advanced imaging techniques may not be readily available.

Abstract
This study included 46 patients with class II malocclusion ranging in age from 19 to 39 years old treated with bilateral sagittal split ramous osteotomy (BSSRO). Left and right temporomandibular joints (TMJs) of each subject were evaluated independently with cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) before operation (T1), 1 week after operation (T2), and 1 year after operation (T3) and assessed the effects of orthognathic surgery (OGS) on the temporomandibular joint disease (TMD) symptoms. Temporomandibular joint morphology evaluation included condylar volume, condylar area, cortical bone thickness, depth of the mandibular fossa, fossa thickness, joint nodule angle, joint space, and condyle-fossa relationship, which were calculated by using the Mimics software and 3-matic software. Data were statistically analyzed with SPSS software (P <0.05 means statistically significant). In our study, bilateral TMJs have no difference in T3. Bilateral sagittal split ramous osteotomy had no significant effect on the articular fossa. The condyle volume and surface area decreased from T1 to T3, but the cortical thickness of the bone did not change significantly. More anterior condyle positions in T1 and more posterior in T3.21 patients had at least 1 sign or symptom of TMD in T1 and 27 patients in T3. Four patients who were asymptomatic in T1 developed pain after surgery, 10 developed noises, 12 showed limited mouth opening, and 8 had abnormal opening patterns. It is concluded that more condylar posterior position after BSSRO and the reduction of condyle may be related to the enlargement of anterior space. The number of patients with joint symptoms increased postoperative, and the impact of BSSRO on TMD may be negative.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To correlate the volume of the mandibular condyle (MC) and the coronoid process (CP) with sex, age, and skeletal deformities. METHODS The structures were visualized through semi-automatic segmentation of the 3D model and complemented with manual segmentation, using the ITK-SNAP 3.0 software. Mann-Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis, and the Dunn test were performed (p < 0.05). RESULTS The MC volume showed statistical differences between sex and skeletal deformities. Men and Class III patients showed higher values. CP volume was not influenced by age or skeletal deformities. However, statistical differences were found between sex, with higher values for men. CONCLUSION MC volume was influenced by sex and skeletal deformities, while CP was influenced only by sex. Women have smaller volumes for these structures. Age is not correlated with the volume of MC and CP. The highest and lowest values of condylar volume were found for Class III and II individuals, respectively.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to determine the relationship between the morphologic characteristics of condyle and glenoid fossa in different sagittal skeletal patterns using cone-beam computed tomography. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, the lateral cephalometric and cone-beam computed tomography images of 90 patients were evaluated. The patients were categorized into three equal groups of sagittal skeletal patterns, according to the ANB angle. The greatest anteroposterior and mediolateral diameters of the mandibular condyles, as well as the angle between the long axis of the mandibular condyles and the midsagittal plane, were measured on the axial view of cone-beam computed tomography images. The anterior joint space, superior joint space, posterior joint space, articular eminence inclination, depth of the glenoid fossa, and width of the glenoid fossa were also measured on the central sagittal slices. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Tukey's post hoc test and chi-square test were performed. RESULTS Patients with the skeletal Class III had a significantly higher articular eminence inclination, while Class II patients had a lower articular eminence inclination (P = .001). In Class III patients, the depth of the glenoid fossa was greater, and the width of the glenoid fossa was smaller than in the other groups (P < .01). The anterior and posterior joint space did not show any significant differences between the 3 groups. CONCLUSION There were significant differences in some morphological characteristics of the condyle and glenoid fossa in patients with different sagittal skeletal patterns; therefore, this relationship should be considered in the treatment of these patients.

Abstract
Objectives The aim of this study was to analyse volumetric asymmetries between the right and left condyles in relation to age, gender, and dental status. Materials and methods A retrospective analysis of 150 cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans was conducted. A single investigator performed the volumetric analysis of the CBCT scans using Vesalius 3D software. The volumetric data were analysed in relation to the gender, age, and dental status. Results The mean right condylar volume was significantly higher (P < .01) than the left condylar volume. Right and left condylar volumes were significantly higher (P < .01) in male study participants when compared to female study participants. There was no significant difference (P = .47) in the volumetric asymmetry between the male and female study participants. The volumetric asymmetry was significantly higher (P < .01) in the older age groups when compared to the younger age groups. The volumetric asymmetry was significantly higher (P < .01) in the partially and completely edentulous patients when compared to the dentate study participants. The condylar volume on the side having a partially edentulous area was significantly lower than the condylar volume of the contralateral dentate side (P < .001). Conclusions The volumetric asymmetry between the right and left condyle significantly increases with age and edentulousness. The result of the study encourages the clinicians to perform volumetric evaluation of the condyles in cases of radiographically evident condylar asymmetries to obtain a more accurate diagnosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is currently no information on how different mandibular segments are affected by juvenile idiopathic arthritis. The aim of this paper is to assess volumetric differences of different mandibular segments in subjects with unilateral and bilateral JIA and to compare them with non-JIA control volumes. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty subjects with unilateral TMJ involvement and 48 with bilateral TMJ involvement were selected for the case group and 45 subjects with no known rheumatic comorbidities for the control group. The mandible of each subject was divided according to a validated method into different paired volumes (hemimandible, condyle, ramus and hemibody). RESULTS The ANOVA test revealed a statistically significant difference in all the groups for condylar and ramus volumes, and the pairwise comparison evidenced a statistically significant higher condylar and ramus volume in the control group (1444.47 mm3; 5715.44 mm3) than in the affected side in the unilateral JIA group (929.46 mm3; 4776.31 mm3) and the bilateral JIA group (1068.54 mm3; 5715.44 mm3). Moreover, there was also a higher condylar volume in the unaffected side in the unilateral JIA group (1419.39 mm3; 5566.24 mm3) than in the bilateral JIA group and the affected side in the unilateral JIA group. CONCLUSIONS The affected side of unilateral JIA patients showed statistically significant lower volumes in the hemimandible, in the condyle and in the ramus. The largest total mandibular volume was observed in the control group, followed by the unilateral JIA group and, lastly, by the bilateral JIA group.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study established the morphometry of the mandibular condyle in individuals with complete craniofacial growth and sagittal intermaxillary relationships class I, II and III using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). MATERIALS AND METHODS Cone beam computed tomography was obtained for orthodontics diagnostic purposes. The sample was divided taking into account the ANB angle in sagittal classes I, II and III (age ranged from 18 to 40 years old). Linear measurements and shapes of 144 mandibular condyles were analyzed. RESULTS Statistically significant differences were found in measurements of the mediolateral diameter when compared with gender (P 0.000) being larger for males. Statistically significant differences between the mediolateral diameter and the coronal shape for the right as well as the left sides with P values of 0.000 and 0.47 respectively were found. CONCLUSION In this sample, it was not possible to conclusively determine the relationship between the skeletal class and the mediolateral diameter. However, more studies are required.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the accuracy of single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) in diagnosing unilateral condylar hyperplasia (UCH) and to describe the condylar growth of patients with UCH. MATERIALS AND METHODS Using a retrospective study design, patients with UCH who had undergone SPECT and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) examinations at the same time were included in the study. We used 3D medical models based on CBCT data as the gold standard. The SPECT results were compared with the model data, and the sensitivity and specificity were calculated. To further describe the condylar growth activity, statistical analysis was performed, and the P value was set at 0.05. RESULTS The sample was composed of 75 patients. The sensitivity of SPECT was 55.3%, the specificity was 48.6%, and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.53. There was no significant difference in sex between patients with and without active growth. CONCLUSION The sensitivity and specificity of SPECT are poor, and SPECT alone is not suitable for evaluating the active stage of condylar growth. 3D medical modeling has good prospects for application in the diagnosis of condylar hyperplasia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the morphological changes of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in adult patients with skeletal class II deep overbite before and after orthodontic treatment, and to analyze the effect of the orthodontic treatment. METHODS A total of 40 adult skeletal class II deep overbite patients were recruited as the study cohort. For each subject, the morphology and position of the TMJ were determined using cone beam computed tomography. RESULTS Compared with before the treatment, the morphology of the condyle changed. The maximum cross-sectional area of the condyle in the axial plane and the condyle neck anteroposterior diameter in the coronal plane were reduced. The condylar apex height in the sagittal plane and the anterior condyle oblique inclination increased with statistically significant differences (all P<0.001). There were more patients who showed their condyles moving forward and their condyles in the middlee after the treatment compared with before the treatment, and with a statistically significant difference (P=0.002). The morphology of the glenoid fossa changed after the treatment. The articular eminence to the FH plane angle in the sagittal plane and the inclination of the posterior glenoid increased. The total height of the fossa increased with statistically significant differences (all P<0.001). CONCLUSION TMJs can be adaptive to reconstruction. Orthodontic treatment shows a favorable efficacy in skeletal class ll deep overbite patients.

Abstract
ABSTRACT This study was conducted to provide diametric and volumetric data of mandibular condyles from patients with Angle class 2 and 3 malocclusions by semiautomatic segmentation based upon cone-beam computed tomography.Cone-beam computed tomography images of 79 patients were analyzed. By using the open-source software "ITK-SNAP", diametric and volumetric measurements of 158 mandibular condyles were performed. Descriptive statistics were calculated for all normally distributed variables. Correlations between patients with Angle class 2 and 3 were calculated with the independent Student t test. P values P < 0.05 were considered significant.Irrespective of the side, patients with class 2 malocclusion showed smaller mandibular condyles (right: 1.128 ± 0.504 cm3; left: 1.222 ± 0.596 cm3) than patients with class 3 (right: 1.504 ± 0.361 cm3; left: 1.493 ± 0.335 cm3). These results were reproducible also in accordance with the diametric measurement (class 2 right: 16.75 ± 2.72 mm; left: 17.04 ± 3.01 mm) (class 3 right: 18.24 ± 2.54 mm; left: 18.32 ± 2.13 mm). However, volumetric differences were highly statistically significant (right: P = 0.001; left: P = 0.018) while diametric differences were slightly significant for the right and not significant for the left side (right: P = 0.042; left: P = 0.053).Diametric and volumetric analyses offer important additional information based on 3D images of cone-beam computed tomography technology. Significant differences in diameter and volume of mandibular condyles could be assessed between different classes of malocclusion.

Abstract
Purpose This study was conducted to elucidate volumetric data of mandibular condyles of orthognathic patients by analyzing cone beam computed tomography images based upon semiautomatic segmentation. Methods Cone beam computed tomography images of 87 patients with malocclusions were analyzed in this retrospective study. Patients were between 17 and 53 years old and diagnosed with Angle class I, II, or III malocclusion. By using the validated open-source software “ITK-SNAP,” the volumetric measurements of 174 mandibular condyles were performed. Volumetric analysis was performed according to intra-subject side differences by paired Student t test. In accordance to inter-subject side, gender, age and type of malocclusion differences bivariate analysis and ANOVA were applied. Results The mean volume for the right condyle was 1.378 ± 0.447 cm3, with a maximum of 2.379 cm3 and a minimum of 0.121 cm3. The mean volume for the left side was 1.435 ± 0.474 cm3, with a maximum of 3.264 cm3 and a minimum of 0.109 cm3. Bivariate analysis indicated a highly significant inter-subject difference between the volume of the left and right mandibular condyles (p < 0.01). Females had a significantly smaller condyle volume than males (p < 0.05 left condyle; p < 0.01 right condyle). Conclusion The fact that shape and volume of mandibular condyles show a high susceptibility to pathological alterations and particularly malocclusions makes a precise knowledge about volumetric changes indispensable. Our results show that significant inter-subject differences in condyle volume could be found with respect to the side and gender. Larger volumes could be assessed for the left condyle and for male patients.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between craniofacial morphology, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) characteristics, and condylar functional movement in patients with facial asymmetry using an up-to-date automated real-time jaw-tracking system. A total of 30 patients with mandibular asymmetry and prognathism were included. Three-dimensional (3D) craniofacial and TMJ morphometric variables were analyzed in images captured using cone-beam computed tomography. Three-dimensional condylar movements were recorded during the opening, protrusion, and laterotrusion of the jaw and divided into those for deviated and non-deviated sides. Overall functional and morphometric variables were compared between the sides by a paired t-test. Pearson’s correlation analysis and factor analysis were also performed. As a result, significant differences were found between the sides in morphometric and functional variables. The condylar path length was significantly longer and steeper on the deviated side during protrusion and lateral excursion. TMJ morphometric asymmetry, more so than the craniofacial morphologic asymmetry, seemed to be reflected in the functional asymmetry, representing different correlations between the sides, as supported by factor analysis. This study provides evidence explaining why the asymmetric condylar path remained unchanged even after orthognathic surgery for the correction of craniofacial asymmetry.

Abstract
Objective This study aimed to evaluate the following null hypothesis: there are no differences in the morphology of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) structures in relation to vertical and sagittal cephalometric patterns. Methods This retrospective study was performed with 131 participants showing no TMJ symptoms. The participants were divided into Class I, II, and III groups on the basis of their sagittal cephalometric relationships and into hyperdivergent, normodivergent, and hypodivergent groups on the basis of their vertical cephalometric relationships. The following measurements were performed using cone-beam computed tomography images and compared among the groups: condylar volume, condylar size (width, length, and height), fossa size (length and height), and condyle-to-fossa joint spaces at the anterior, superior, and posterior condylar poles. Results The null hypothesis was rejected. The Class III group showed larger values for condylar width, condylar height, and fossa height than the Class II group (p < 0.05). Condylar volume and superior joint space in the hyperdivergent group were significantly smaller than those in the other two vertical groups (p < 0.001), whereas fossa length and height were significantly larger in the hyperdivergent group than in the other groups (p < 0.01). The hypodivergent group showed a greater condylar width than the hyperdivergent group (p < 0.01). The sagittal and vertical cephalometric patterns showed statistically significant interactions for fossa length and height. Conclusions TMJ morphology differed across diverse skeletal cephalometric patterns. The fossa length and height were affected by the interactions of the vertical and sagittal skeletal patterns.

Abstract
Background The aim of this study is to evaluate whether the three-dimensional (3D) morphology of the mandibular condyle, glenoid fossa, and mandible correlated with menton deviation in facial asymmetry. Subjects and methods Thirty adults (15 males and 15 females; mean age, 23.2 ± 3.8 years) with facial asymmetry were included. Linear, angular, and volumetric measurements of the 3D morphology of the mandibular condyle, glenoid fossa, and mandible were recorded using computed tomography (CT) images. The right/left differences were obtained by subtracting the left value from the right value, and an independent t test was used to compare the differences between the females and males. Multiple regression analysis was performed to identify the correlation between the right/left difference of the 3D morphology and menton deviation. Results The results of the comparative analysis did not show any statistical difference between the females and males (P > .05), so the females and males were combined. Multiple regression analysis for the mandibular condyle, glenoid fossa, and mandible showed that neck length, ramus length, and frontal ramal inclination had positive influences on menton deviation, with 76.5% of explanatory power. The neck length and head volume of the mandibular condyle when only the mandibular condyle was considered, and the ramus length and frontal ramal inclination when only the mandible was considered had positive influence on menton deviation with 69.9% and 68.6% explanatory power, respectively. On the other hand, when only considering glenoid fossa, the glenoid fossa had little effect on menton deviation with 15.7% of explanatory power. Conclusions In facial asymmetry, the right/left differences in mandibular condyle and mandible have more impact on the menton deviation than the right/left differences in glenoid fossa. Abstract
Background Adverse effects of masticatory muscle injections of Botulinum Toxin (Btx) have been noted in animal and, less dramatically, human studies. Objective Among women treated in multiple community‐based private practices, to compare TMJ bone density and mandibular condylar volume between patients with myofascial TMJD receiving multiple masticatory muscle Btx treatments and similarly diagnosed women not receiving such treatment. Methods Cohorts consisted of women whose treatment charts indicated a diagnosis of myofascial TMJD: 35 received at least 2 Btx treatment cycles; 44 received none. Bone density at pre‐specified regions of interest (ROI) was defined by grey scale values from Cone Beam CT, adjusting for a fixed density phantom included in each scan. Mean bone density and mandibular condyle volume were compared between groups. Dose‐response effects were tested within the Btx‐exposed group. Results The mean density of primary and secondary ROIs was similar between exposure groups, as was condylar volume. Among Btx‐exposed women, increasing dose of Btx to the temporalis muscle was inversely proportional to the density of the trabecular area of the mandible body. Many Btx‐exposed women received smaller doses of Btx to the masseter muscles than in most TMJD Btx clinical trials. Conclusion Masticatory muscle injections of Btx failed to produce clinically significant TMJ bone‐related changes. Should Btx receive regulatory approval for treatment of myofascial TMJD, a phase IV study is recommended to evaluate potential adverse effects of Btx on bone and muscle when administered at higher doses and/or for more treatment cycles.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this study was to evaluate temporomandibular joint (TMJ) condyle and glenoid fossa morphology with measurements on Computed Tomography (CT) and volumetric analysis using InVesalius software program. MATERIALS AND METHODS 250 condyles in 125 patients (mean age: 40.64) was evaluated on CT. Length, width, and height of the condyle, condylar volume, the thickness of glenoid fossa (TGF), condyle surface area, anterior space (AS), superior space (SS), and posterior space (PS) were measured in this study. Two left and right sides of the jaw have been measured. Linear measurements were performed with the image analysis program (Image J, 1.4 v version, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD). Volume and surface area measurements were performed with InVesalius software (CTI, Campinas, SãoPaulo, Brazil). RESULTS To compare the dimensions of the condyle between males and females, there was only a significant difference in left AS and SS and no significant difference was found between males and females in other measured factors. There was a significant difference between the age groups and left SS. A significant difference was also found between the age groups and condylar height, condyle surface area, and condylar volume on both right and left sides. CONCLUSION Evaluation of condylar morphology is important to assess the TMJ anomalies and bony changes. This study showed no significant differences between gender and all measured factors except in the left AS and SS. However, age factor had a major effect on the morphology.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) morphological characteristics in people with Class II versus Class I sagittal skeletal relationship and to identify other factors that influence the TMJ dimensions. MATERIAL AND METHODS This cross-sectional and retrospective study evaluated 188 people divided into two groups, 92 cone-beam computed tomographies (CBCTs) and lateral radiographs (LR) of people with Skeletal class II relationship with Class II division 1 malocclusion versus 96 CBCTs and LR of people with Class I skeletal relationship and Class I malocclusion (controls). The CBCTs included people of both sexes, aged between 15 and 65 years old. The 3D Imaging Carestream Software was used to evaluate the condyle height and neck width, mediolateral and anteroposterior condyle dimensions, the shape of the glenoid fossa and condyle in the CBCTs. Likewise, the ANB angle, the Wits appraisal and other measurements were evaluated on LR. Besides, Mann-Whitney U, Chi2 and multiple linear regression tests were performed. The significance level was set at P˂0.05. RESULTS The mediolateral and anteroposterior condyle dimensions were smaller in class II people (1.82mm and 0.29mm, respectively) than class I people (P<0.05). Likewise, height and neck width of condyle were smaller in class II people (0.73mm and 0.40mm, respectively) than class I people (P<0.05). Multiple linear regression identified mainly the ANB angle as a factor (P<0.05) that influenced the dimensions, decreasing the condyle dimensions in skeletal class II relationship. CONCLUSIONS People with skeletal class II relationship showed smaller condyle dimension values than class I people. A decrease in the dimensions of the eminence and the condyle could be expected when the ANB angle increases.

Abstract
PURPOSE Degenerative joint changes commonly affect the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and can result in chin deviation. However, the extent of degenerative TMJ changes and chin deviation has not been well-characterized. The present study sought to correlate degenerative TMJ changes with condylar volume, grayscale measures, and chin deviation. MATERIALS AND METHODS The present cross-sectional study had enrolled women with skeletal Class III malocclusion. Cone-beam computed tomography scans were acquired preoperatively. For each condyle, degenerative TMJ signs were analyzed and the condylar volume and grayscale were measured. The predictor variable was the presence of degenerative TMJ signs, classified as categorical data: 0, if none; 1, only present in 1 joint; and 2, present in both joints. The primary outcome variable was a chin deviation of 3 mm or more. Other associated variables were grouped by age, cephalometric data, and 3-dimensional condylar measurements. Descriptive bivariate statistics were computed, and univariate and multiple logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify any associations between degenerative TMJ disease and chin deviation. RESULTS We included 85 patients, who were classified into 2 groups: less than 3 mm of chin deviation (n = 43) and 3 mm or more of chin deviation (n = 42). The presence of more than 10 degenerative TMJ signs was significantly associated with the presence of 3 mm or more of chin deviation (P < .001). In multiple regression models, the presence of subcortical sclerosis in 1 joint and in both joints (adjusted odds ratio [OR], 3.698; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.051 to 13.012; adjusted OR, 5.001; 95% CI, 1.461-17.119, respectively) correlated significantly with the presence of 3 mm or more of chin deviation (P < .05). The volume difference between the 2 condyles was significantly greater in the group with more than 10 degenerative TMJ signs and 3 mm or more of chin deviation than in the group with 10 or fewer degenerative TMJ signs and less than 3 mm of chin deviation (P = .016 and P < .001, respectively). CONCLUSIONS In women with skeletal Class III malocclusion, the presence of more than 10 degenerative TMJ signs increased the prevalence of 3 mm or more of chin deviation. The presence of subcortical sclerosis in either 1 or both joints and volume differences between the 2 condyles were associated with greater chin deviation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study is to research the mandibular condyle volumes of the Turkish subpopulation by sex, age, laterality, and posterior occlusal support, to provide volumetric data for young and old patient groups. METHODS The CBCT images of 690 condyles from 345 patients (165 females and 180 males) were assessed. Patients aged 18-25 years were chosen for the younger group, and 45-70 years for the older group. The dental statuses of the older patient group were divided into three categories, based on the Eichner index. All the CBCT images were transferred to the three-dimensional volumetric analysis software, ITK-Snap (Penn Image Computing and Science Laboratory (PICSL) at the University of Pennsylvania and Scientific Computing and Imaging Institute (SCI) at the University of Utah) and analyzed with sagittal, coronal, and axial sections. Mandibular condyles were defined using semi-automatic segmentation, then manual segmentation was performed to ensure accuracy. Analyses were performed using MedCalc statistical software. The p value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS The mean right condyle volume for the whole sample (n = 345) was 1678.8 mm3 and the left condyle volume was 1661.3 mm3. Males had a larger condyle volume than females in both the younger and older patient groups (p = 0.035, p < 0.01, respectively). The Eichner index did not correlate significantly with condylar volume in the older patient group (p = 0.134, p = 0.122). CONCLUSION There were significant differences between the volumes of mandibular condyles for different sex, while there were no significant differences in relation to age, laterality, and posterior occlusal support.

Specifically, analyzing the reliability and accuracy of methods used for three-dimensional condyle segmentation. METHODS Three electronic databases were searched for studies reporting the reliability and accuracy of various methods used to segment mandibular condyles from three-dimensional imaging modalities. Two authors independently reviewed articles for eligibility and data extraction. RESULTS Nine studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Eight studies assessed the condylar segmentation from CBCT images and limited studies were available on non-CBCT three-dimensional imaging modalities. Threshold-based volume segmentation, manual segmentation, and semi-automatic segmentation techniques were presented. Threshold-based volume segmentation reported higher accuracy when completed by an experienced technician compared to clinicians. Adequate reliability and accuracy were observed in manual segmentation. Although adequate reliability was reported in semi-automatic segmentation, data on its accuracy were lacking. CONCLUSION A definitive conclusion with regards to which current technique is most reliable and accurate to efficiently segment the mandibular condyle cannot be made with the currently available evidence. This is especially true in terms of non-CBCT imaging modalities with very limited literature available.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to assess the dimensional and volumetric changes in the mandibular condyle in Kennedy class I patients versus completely dentate patients by cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) to estimate the effect of loss of posterior teeth on the mandibular condyle. PATIENTS AND METHODS This study was performed on one hundred patients requesting CBCT scans: fifty Kennedy class I patients and fifty fully dentate controls. Condyle dimensions mesio-distal, cranio-caudal and antero-posterior as well as condyle volume were measured in both the groups. RESULTS Kennedy class I patients showed statistically significant higher mean condyle width but lower mean condyle height than the control group. No statistically significant difference was found between the study group and the control group regarding condyle AP dimension. There was no statistically significant difference between condyle volumes in the two groups. CONCLUSION Loss of posterior teeth is accompanied by significant decrease in condyle height and increase in condyle width with no change in the total condyle volume or antero-posterior dimensions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To compare characteristics of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and related structures according to Angle class I, II1, II2, and III. METHODS 123 Chinese patients (13-36 years old, 60 males, and 63 females) were classified in four groups according to Angle's classification: skeletal class I (31 patients), skeletal class II division 1 (30 patients), skeletal class II division 2 (30 patients), and skeletal class III (32 patients). Left and right TMJs of each subject were evaluated independently with cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). The position of condyle in the joint fossa was analyzed according to Pullinger. RESULTS There were significant differences between class III subjects and class I, II1, II2 in the superior joint space (p < 0.05). Compared with class II1, II2, and III subjects, the height and diameter of condyle in class I was significantly larger (p < 0.05). The width of joint fossa was significantly larger in Angle class III than in Angle class I, II1, and II2, while the depth was significantly smaller. The condyle position in class III subjects was more anteriorly displaced compared with that in class I subjects. In class II2 patients, the condyle position was mainly concentric and posterior. CONCLUSIONS There are significant differences in condylar morphology, joint space, joint fossa morphology, and condylar position between different Angle classifications.

Abstract
Over many decades, the Göttingen Minipig has been used as a large animal model in experimental surgical research of the mandible. Recently several authors have raised concerns over the use of the Göttingen Minipig in this research area, observing problems with post-operative wound healing and loosening implants. To reduce these complications during and after surgery and to improve animal welfare in mandibular surgery research, the present study elucidated how comparable the mandible of minipigs is to that of humans and whether these complications could be caused by specific anatomical characteristics of the minipigs' mandible, its masticatory muscles and associated vasculature. Twenty-two mandibular cephalometric parameters were measured on CT scans of Göttingen Minipigs aged between 12 and 21 months. Ultimately, we compared this data with human data reported in the scientific literature. In addition, image segmentation was used to determine the masticatory muscle morphology and the configuration of the mandibular blood vessels. Compared to data of humans, significant differences in the mandibular anatomy of minipigs were found. Of the 22 parameters measured only four were found to be highly comparable, whilst the others were not. The 3D examinations of the minipigs vasculature showed a very prominent deep facial vein directly medial to the mandibular ramus and potentially interfering with the sectional plane of mandibular distraction osteogenesis. Damage to this vessel could result in inaccessible bleeding. The findings of this study suggest that Göttingen Minipigs are not ideal animal models for experimental mandibular surgery research. Nevertheless if these minipigs are used the authors recommend that radiographic techniques, such as computed tomography, be used in the specific planning procedures for the mandibular surgical experiments. In addition, it is advisable to choose suitable age groups and customize implants based on the mandibular dimensions reported in this study.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of osteoarthritic alterations in the osseous components of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in asymptomatic patients with different skeletal patterns, gender, and age groups with cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. STUDY DESIGN CBCT images of 213 asymptomatic patients were assessed for the presence of any degenerative changes in the condyle and fossa/eminence complex. Each TMJ was evaluated separately and was classified as normal, indeterminate for osteoarthritis, or affected by osteoarthritis. Differences were tested by using the χ2 and Fisher's exact tests (P < .05). RESULTS In total, 52.3% of the joints presented some visible alteration in the osseous components. Abnormalities were detected in 32.6% of the condyles and 31.5% of the articular fossae/eminences, and flattening was the most prevalent alteration in all classes. There was no statistically significant difference in the prevalence of alterations in either the condyle or the articular fossa/eminence among the skeletal groups for the entire sample or for the gender and age subsets. CONCLUSIONS There are no differences in degenerative TMJ changes in patients with or without skeletal jaw discrepancies. No differences were found when gender and age were considered.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study is to analyze the mandibular condylar volumein a sample of subjects 11-26 years old. METHODS CBCT condylescans from 94 patients (mean age 18.2 ± 4.5 y) acquired with areconstructed layer thickness of 0.5 mm and a 512×512 matrix were examined. Data on condylar volume were compared among three groups with different age ranges: 11-16 years, 17-21years, and 22-26 years. Condylar volumetric measurements were performed with Mimics™ software. RESULTS A significant increase in condylar volume from puberty to young adulthood was detected (p < 0.01). Females showed a higher condylar volume in the 17-21 y group compared with the 11-16 y group. Males showed differences among all three groups. CONCLUSION The mandibular condyle growth seems to continue at least until 17-21 years in males but seems to stop before 17 years in females.

Abstract
In literature there are few reports about multiple CGCG. But this is the first report of bilateral CGCG of the mandibular angles in three females from the same family.This report describes three cases of females from the same family - a mother and two young daughters - with bilateral CGCG in their jaw angles. All the lesions were surgically removed and the histopathologic diagnosis was always identical: giant cell central granulomas, with patterns that were absolutely superimposable between them and with that of the mother.The hypothesis is that this presentation of CGCG may be defined as hereditary bilateral CGCG of the mandibular angles (or also, cherubism-like lesions).

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recognition of normal temporomandibular joints (TMJs) is essential to assess arthropathic changes. Few, if any, prior studies have evaluated the morphological appearance of growing TMJs by magnetic resonance (MR) examinations in the pediatric population. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to determine normative osseous appearance of growing TMJs according to age and gender, both qualitatively and quantitatively, concerning structural and bone marrow changes. MATERIALS AND METHODS From 1,036 MR scans screened, one joint was included from each of 157 patients (76% female; 2-18 years) presenting with at least one normal-appearing TMJ was included. Quantitatively, mandibular condyle was characterized by measuring the following: (i) head-neck angle, (ii) anteversion angle, (iii) condylar dimensions (mediolateral, craniocaudal and anteroposterior [AP]) and (iv) condylar volume. Furthermore, qualitative categorization of condylar shape, into one of three types, and condylar bone marrow type was performed. RESULTS The head-neck angle significantly correlated with age (bivariable regression β =0.60, P<0.001), indicating an increase of 1.6 degrees per year. Except for AP diameter of condyles, all other mandibular dimensions and condylar volume increased with age (β =0.20-0.59, P≤0.001-0.004). Significant age difference was observed among the different condylar shapes (P<0.001), indicating a change from rounded head without anterior tilt to rectangular head with anterior tilt. Lastly, mandibular condylar size, measured by volume and by AP and mediolateral dimensions, appeared larger in males. CONCLUSION The morphology of the mandibular condyles changes with age. During development, the shape of the condyles changes from round to rectangular in contour with the development of the anterior condylar tilt, as measured by the head-neck angle.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The purpose of this study was to evaluate the hypothesis that 3-dimensional mandibular morphology is correlated with condylar movement in patients with mandibular asymmetry. METHODS Subjects were classified into 2 groups (n = 25 each): mandibular asymmetry with a menton deviation greater than 4 mm and no mandibular asymmetry with a menton deviation less than 4 mm. Linear and volumetric measurements of 3-dimensional mandibular morphology were recorded using computed tomography. Mandibular functional movement was recorded by computerized axiography (CADIAX; Gamma Dental, Klosterneuburg, Austria), and condylar path length, sagittal condylar inclination, and transverse condylar inclination on protrusion were measured. We calculated side-to-side asymmetry (shifted side vs nonshifted side) in mandibular morphology and assessed condylar movement by using an asymmetry ratio (nonshifted side/shifted side). RESULTS Significant differences in mandibular morphology and condylar movement were found between the 2 groups. In the group with menton deviation greater than 4 mm, significant correlations were found between the asymmetry ratio of mandibular morphology and condylar movement: ie, condylar path length and transverse condylar inclination. No significant correlations were found between any of these measurements in the group with menton deviation less than 4 mm. CONCLUSIONS In support of our hypothesis, the results suggested that 3-dimensional mandibular morphologic asymmetry is associated with condylar movement in subjects with mandibular asymmetry.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Condylar position may play an important role in the establishment of different craniofacial morphologies. The aim of the present study was to determine the possible association between condylar position and vertical skeletal craniofacial morphology in subjects with normal sagittal skeletal pattern using CBCT. METHOD AND MATERIAL The CBCT images of 45 patients with Class I sagittal skeletal pattern were classified into three balanced groups on the basis of SN-MP angle. Each group contained 15 subjects: low angle, normal angle and high angle. The condylar position was determined for the left and right joints. Chi square test was applied to assess the association between condylar position and vertical skeletal growth pattern. RESULTS The condyles were more anteriorly-positioned in patients with high angle vertical pattern than in those with normal and low angle vertical pattern. No significant differences were found in condylar position between low angle and normal angle subjects. CONCLUSION A significant correlation between condylar position and vertical skeletal pattern was found in the present study. This relationship can be considered for predicting and establishing a proper treatment plan for temporomandibular diseases during orthodontic treatment.

Abstract
The accuracy of Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) on linear and volumetric measurements on condyles has only been assessed on dry skulls. The aim of this study was to evaluate the reliability and accuracy of linear and volumetric measurements of mandibular condyles in the presence of soft tissues using CBCT. Six embalmed cadaver heads were used. CBCT scans were taken, followed by the extraction of the condyles. The water displacement technique was used to calculate the volumes of the condyles and three linear measurements were made using a digital caliper, these measurements serving as the gold standard. Surface models of the condyles were obtained using a 3D scanner, and superimposed onto the CBCT images. Condyles were isolated on the CBCT render volume using the surface models as reference and volumes were measured. Linear measurements were made on CBCT slices. The CBCT method was found to be reliable for both volumetric and linear measurements (CV < 3%; CCI > 0.90). Highly accurate values were obtained for the three linear measurements and volume. CBCT is a reliable and accurate method for taking volumetric and linear measurements on mandibular condyles in the presence of soft tissue, and so a valid tool for clinical diagnosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Treating Class II subdivision malocclusion with asymmetry has been a challenge for orthodontists because of the complicated characteristics of asymmetry. This study aimed to explore the characteristics of dental and skeletal asymmetry in Class II subdivision malocclusion, and to assess the relationship between the condyle-glenoid fossa and first molar. METHODS Cone-beam computed tomographic images of 32 patients with Class II subdivision malocclusion were three-dimensionally reconstructed using the Mimics software. Forty-five anatomic landmarks on the reconstructed structures were selected and 27 linear and angular measurements were performed. Paired-samples t-tests were used to compare the average differences between the Class I and Class II sides; Pearson correlation coefficient (r) was used for analyzing the linear association. RESULTS The faciolingual crown angulation of the mandibular first molar (p < 0.05), sagittal position of the maxillary and mandibular first molars (p < 0.01), condylar head height (p < 0.01), condylar process height (p < 0.05), and angle of the posterior wall of the articular tubercle and coronal position of the glenoid fossa (p < 0.01) were significantly different between the two sides. The morphology and position of the condyle-glenoid fossa significantly correlated with the three-dimensional changes in the first molar. CONCLUSIONS Asymmetry in the sagittal position of the maxillary and mandibular first molars between the two sides and significant lingual inclination of the mandibular first molar on the Class II side were the dental characteristics of Class II subdivision malocclusion. Condylar morphology and glenoid fossa position asymmetries were the major components of skeletal asymmetry and were well correlated with the three-dimensional position of the first molar.

Abstract
With the development of X-ray computed tomography (CT) in the 1960s and its first use for clinical studies in 1972 by Sir Godfrey Hounsfield, radiological tomography attained widespread use and today is one of the essential imaging techniques in medical radiology. It is a technically mature and clinically widely accepted method and complements classical X-ray panoramic radiography in many areas. The technology is frequently used in craniofacial radiology, because of its characteristic low radiation dose, high spatial resolution and lower cost compared with CT. The aim of this work was to describe the principles of cone beam computed tomography, to make a brief description of the existing devices, to present briefly the use of 3D diagnosis in craniofacial medicine.

Abstract
Aim. Since cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) has been used for the study of craniofacial morphology, the attention of orthodontists has also focused on the mandibular condyle. The purpose of this brief review is to summarize the recent 3D CBCT images of mandibular condyle. Material and Methods. The eligibility criteria for the studies are (a) studies aimed at evaluating the anatomy of the temporomandibular joint; (b) studies performed with CBCT images; (c) studies on human subjects; (d) studies that were not clinical case-reports and clinical series; (e) studies reporting data on children, adolescents, or young adults (data from individuals with age ≤ 30 years). Sources included PubMed from June 2008 to June 2016. Results. 43 full-text articles were initially screened for eligibility. 13 full-text articles were assessed for eligibility. 11 articles were finally included in qualitative synthesis. The main topics treated in the studies are the volume and surface of the mandibular condyle, the bone changes on cortical surface, the facial asymmetry, and the optimum position of the condyle in the glenoid fossa. Conclusion. Additional studies will be necessary in the future, constructed with longitudinal methodology, especially in growing subjects. The limits of CBCT acquisitions are also highlighted.

Abstract
PURPOSE Three-dimensional quantification of asymmetry in UCH has not been reported yet, but would be useful for diagnosing and evaluating the degree of deformity in this disease. It enables profound decision-making and timing of surgery. Unilateral condylar hyperplasia (UCH) can subjectively be classified in hemimandibular elongation (HE), hemimandibular hyperplasia (HH) and a combination of these two (hybrid form). The main purpose of this study was to quantify mandibular asymmetry in UCH patients with a reliable and reproducible method. Secondly, it was evaluated whether the existing classification can be confirmed. MATERIALS AND METHODS 37 UCH-patients with progressive mandibular asymmetry, supported by a positive bone scan and/or such clinical progression that condylectomy was performed, were included in this retrospective study. A group of healthy subjects, matched for age and gender, was used as the control group. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans were imported in Maxilim® software. Each mandibular half was divided into three skeletal segments (condyle, ramus, and body). Linear and volumetric measurements were calculated for these skeletal units on the affected and unaffected side, for both patients and controls. RESULTS Significant differences between affected and unaffected sides in the patient group were found in condylar, ramus, and body segments for linear (p < 0.01) as well as for volumetric quantitative measurements (p < 0.0040). A mean linear difference between affected and unaffected sides in the condylar region of the UCH patient group was found of 3.6 mm (sd 2.9) versus 0.2 mm (sd 1.5) in controls. For volumetric measurements there was a mean difference between the left and right condyle of 718 mm3 (sd 638) in the patient group versus 8 mm3 (sd 225) difference in the control group. The condyle was the most affected segment. Differences between sides were significantly larger in the patient group than in the control group (p < 0.001). It was not possible to objectify differences between HE and HH. CONCLUSION CBCT is a useful and accurate modality for quantification and evaluation of mandibular asymmetry in UCH. It enables objective monitoring. The existing classification in HE and HH could not be confirmed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the volume and position of the temporomandibular joint structures, specifically the glenoid fossa and the condylar head, in patients with facial asymmetry. STUDY DESIGN Fifty-six adult patients were divided into two groups-asymmetry group and control group-based on the severity of the mandibular asymmetry, as seen on their orthopantomograms. The volumes and positions of the bilateral temporomandibular joint components were measured by using computed tomography images and a three-dimensional analysis program. Each of the variables was compared between and within the groups. RESULTS The volumes of the condyle and the glenoid fossa on the side of the smaller condyle were significantly smaller in the asymmetry group (P < .05) than in the control group. The volumetric ratios of the glenoid fossa and the joint space to the condyle were also significantly higher on that side (P < .001). The distance of the uppermost point of the glenoid fossa from the midaxial plane in the smaller condyle was significantly shorter (P < .05) only in the asymmetry group. CONCLUSIONS When evaluating mandibular asymmetry, the volume of the glenoid fossa and the volume and vertical position of the condylar head need to be considered in addition to length or width of the condylar head.
