Abstract
Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is the sixth most common cancer globally. Notably, human papillomavirus (HPV)-positive oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) is on the rise, accounting for 70% of all OPSCC cases. Persistent high-risk HPV infection is linked to various cancers, but HPV infection alone is not sufficient to cause cancer. Advances in next-generation sequencing have improved our understanding of changes in the human microbiome of cancerous environments. Yet, there remains a dearth of knowledge on the impact of HPV-microbiome crosstalk in HPV-positive OPSCC. In this review, we examine what is known about the oropharyngeal microbiome and the compositional shifts in this microbiome in HPV-positive OPSCC. We also review potential mechanisms of crosstalk between HPV and specific microorganisms. Additional research is needed to understand these interactions and their roles on cancer development and progression.

Abstract
Dysregulated inflammatory responses are often correlated with disease severity during viral infections. Annexin A1 (AnxA1) is an endogenous pro-resolving protein that timely regulates inflammation by activating signaling pathways that culminate with the termination of response, clearance of pathogen and restoration of tissue homeostasis. Harnessing the pro-resolution actions of AnxA1 holds promise as a therapeutic strategy to control the severity of the clinical presentation of viral infections. In contrast, AnxA1 signaling might also be hijacked by viruses to promote pathogen survival and replication. Therefore, the role of AnxA1 during viral infections is complex and dynamic. In this review, we provide an in-depth view of the role of AnxA1 during viral infections, from pre-clinical to clinical studies. In addition, this review discusses the therapeutic potential for AnxA1 and AnxA1 mimetics in treating viral infections.

Abstract
Head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCCs) are a very heterogeneous group of malignancies arising from the upper aerodigestive tract. They show different clinical behaviors depending on their origin site and genetics. Several data support the existence of at least two genetically different types of HNSCC, one virus-related and the other alcohol and/or tobacco and oral trauma-related, which show both clinical and biological opposite features. In fact, human papillomavirus (HPV)-related HNSCCs, which are mainly located in the oropharynx, are characterized by better prognosis and response to therapies when compared to HPV-negative HNSCCs. Interestingly, virus-related HNSCC has shown a better response to conservative (nonsurgical) treatments and immunotherapy, opening questions about the possibility to perform a pretherapy assessment which could totally guide the treatment strategy. In this review, we summarize molecular differences and similarities between HPV-positive and HPV-negative HNSCC, highlighting their impact on clinical behavior and on therapeutic strategies.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to investigate the expression and role of microRNA-26a (miR-26a) in lung cancer, and to verify whether differentially expressed in adenocarcinoma of the lung (DAL-1) is the target protein of miR-26a. mRNA expression levels of miR-26a and DAL-1 were detected using reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Protein expression levels of DAL-1 and annexin A1 (ANXA1) were evaluated by western blot analysis. Cell Counting Kit-8, Transwell and wound scratch healing assays were used to characterize the function of miR-26a in lung cancer cells. The association of DAL-1 with miR-26a or ANXA1 was determined by dual-luciferase reporter or two-dimensional gel electrophoresis assays. miR-26a revealed decreased expression levels in lung cancer tissues compared with normal lung tissues, and decreased expression levels in lung cancer cells compared with 16HBE cells. Inhibition of miR-26a promoted lung cancer cell growth, migration and invasion. The DAL-1 protein exhibited downregulated expression levels in lung cancer tissues. DAL-1 was not the direct target gene of miR-26a. The two-dimensional gel electrophoresis assay confirmed that DAL-1 and ANXA1 were associated proteins. Expression levels of the ANXA1 protein were increased following DAL-1 gene silencing. The altered expression level of miR-26a affected the expression of ANXA1, and not of DAL-1. miR-26a demonstrated decreased expression levels in lung cancer cells, and it has an important effect on the biological function of lung cancer cells. However, DAL-1 was not a target gene of miR-26a. As a DAL-1 associated protein, ANXA1 was regulated by miR-26a.

Abstract
PURPOSE Annexin-A1 (ANXA1) has been implicated in various tumor types, but few studies have investigated its involvement in colorectal cancer. The study aimed to analyze ANXA1 expression in the normal margin and colorectal tumor tissues of 104 patients who underwent surgery for colorectal cancer and to associate the ANXA1 expression with predictive clinicopathological variables. METHODS Hematoxylin-eosin and immunohistochemical staining were used for the analysis. RESULTS ANXA1 expression was higher in colorectal cancer than in normal margin tissue (p = 0.0001). However, no differences were observed when we analyzed the ANXA1 expression in colon and rectal tumors (p = 0.830). Also, this protein positivity was associated with increased carcinoembryonic antigen levels (p = 0.004). Our data in the DNA-mismatch repair proteins expression was in accordance to the literature. And their positivity was not associated with ANXA1 presence in colorectal cancer. CONCLUSION The high incidence of ANXA1 positive expression in colorectal cancer and its association with carcinoembryonic antigen levels might indicate the importance of this protein in the colorectal cancer biology.
