Abstract
BACKGROUND Calcaneal osteomyelitis (CO) still poses great challenges to orthopedic surgeons due to the unique anatomic and functional features of the calcaneus. This study summarized the current data regarding clinical characteristics, treatment and efficacy of CO, based on an analysis of literature-reported cases. MATERIALS AND METHODS The authors searched the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases to find English and Chinese studies reporting on CO patients published between 2000 and 2021, with available data for synthesis analysis. The quality of the included studies was evaluated by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) assessment scale. Effective data were extracted and pooled for analysis. RESULTS Altogether 198 studies involving 1118 patients were included, with a male-to-female ratio of 2.3 (724 males and 310 females). The median age at CO diagnosis was 46 years, with a median symptom duration of 3 months. Injury-related infections (524 cases) and diabetic foot infections (336 cases) were the two most common causes, with ulcers (468 cases) and wound sinus or exudation (209 cases) being the predominant symptoms. The overall positive culture rate was 80.2%, with polymicrobial infections accounting for 18.1%. Staphylococcus aureus was the most frequently detected pathogen (42.7%), with fungal-related infections isolated in 17 cases. Although most patients received surgical interventions (96.9%), the recurrence rate was 20.1%. The incidence of infection relapse following partial calcanectomy, total calcanectomy, debridement with implantation of local antibiotics, and debridement with or without flap or skin coverage were 31.7%, 45.0%, 16.8%, and 15.1%, respectively. The overall incidence of limb amputation was 12.4%, with all-cause and CO-related mortalities of 2.8% and 0.2%, separately. CONCLUSIONS CO shared similar characteristics with extremity chronic osteomyelitis, primarily affecting young males, with trauma and diabetic foot as the leading causes and Staphylococcus aureus as the most frequently detected pathogen. Despite surgery being the primary treatment modality, clinical outcomes remained unsatisfactory, marked by high rates of infection recurrence and limb amputation.

Abstract
Veillonella parvula is a non-motile gram-negative coccus that forms part of the normal microbiota in several body sites and which has been rarely isolated as cause of infections in human population, particularly in bacteremias. Here we give the overview of characteristics of genus Veillonella and the summary of its role in infections, particularly in bacteremia. We additionally report two patients with bacteremia due to V. parvula. Two sets of blood cultures of each patient yielded a pure culture of an anaerobic microorganism identified as V. parvula by MALDI-TOF MS, and confirmed by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The two patients were male and one of them had risk factors for anaerobic bacteremia. The isolates were susceptible to most antibiotics and the outcome was successful in both patients. Bacteremia due to V. parvula is still rare. MALDI-TOF MS appear to be an excellent tool for the correct identification of these species.

Abstract
This is the first case report of decubitus infection and bacteremia due to Veillonella parvula (V. parvula). A patient in his 70s with pre-existing diabetes mellitus was admitted with decubitus infection, and tazobactam/piperacillin treatment was initiated. Tazobactam/piperacillin-resistant V. parvula was detected in the blood and decubitus site cultures. The antimicrobial treatment was changed to clindamycin and cefmetazole. Antimicrobial therapy was administered for 28 days. The patient was transferred to a convalescent hospital. V. parvula occasionally causes infection in immunocompromised patients with underlying diseases, such as diabetes. An appropriate evaluation by culture test is important for diagnosis, treatment, and recurrence prevention. Tazobactam/piperacillin is often used in the treatment of multi-bacterial infections such as decubitus infections. V. parvula may be resistant to tazobactam/piperacillin, and this possibility should be taken into account when administering treatment.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION There are comparatively fewer surgical site infections after craniofacial trauma than after trauma to the extremities, and the etiology is complex. Gram-negative facultative anaerobic bacteria Veillonella is a common commensal in the oral cavity and has been linked to osteomyelitis and surgical site infections in prosthetic joint infections. They serve as early biological indicators. AIMS/OBJECTIVES This study aims to assess the presence of Veillonella in patients presenting with maxillofacial trauma, to document the difference in colony count in patients requiring surgical intervention at different time intervals as against patients with surgical site infections, and to provide better hospital care and management so as to improve the standard of care with an attempt to prevent the possibility of postoperative surgical site infections. METHODOLOGY In this study, individuals with trauma/fractures of the maxillofacial region requiring surgical intervention at varied time spans, early, intermediate, and late, were included. After obtaining informed consent, the examination was done; the fracture type and site were noted, and a swab was taken on the day of admission, on the day of surgery, and on the day of discharge and given for microbiological evaluation. Findings were recorded. RESULTS The primary and secondary objectives of the study were established. The mean colony count in colony-forming units/milliliter for patients undergoing early surgical intervention, on the day of admission, was 2.01E+0.6. On the day of discharge, the mean colony count was 1.51E+0.6. In contrast, for patients with surgical site infection, on the day of admission, the mean was 6.5E+0.7, and on the day of discharge, the mean colony count reduced to 4.01E+0.6. The time-colony-forming unit graph showed a difference in the colony count of Veillonella in patients operated at different time intervals as against patients with surgical site infection and modified relation with a number of other oral commensals. The colony count in patients with osteomyelitis was found and compared. CONCLUSION There is a change in the colony count of Veillonella species and its relation to their commensals when intervened at different time intervals. Our study indicates that the estimation of Veillonella species and the colony count could aid in determining the possibility of a surgical site infection. This study also stresses on the appropriate reporting of maxillofacial trauma in cases of a poly-trauma for appropriate management.

Abstract
Polyphenols exert beneficial effects on host metabolism, which may be mediated by the gut microbiota. We investigated sex-specific differences in microbiota composition and interactions with cardiometabolic parameters after polyphenol supplementation in individuals with overweight/obesity. In a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial, 19 women and 18 men with normal glucose tolerance and body mass index >25 kg/m2 received epigallocatechin-3-gallate and resveratrol (EGCG+RES, 282 + 80 mg/d) or placebo supplements for 12 weeks. Fecal microbiota composition (16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, V3-V4 region), in vivo whole-body fat oxidation (indirect calorimetry), and mitochondrial respiration in permeabilized skeletal muscle fibers (SkM-Ox; ex vivo respirometry) were determined pre- and post-intervention. Overall, EGCG+RES supplementation did not affect gut microbiota composition. Akkermansia, Ruminococcaceae UCG-002, Subdoligranulum, and Lachnospiraceae UCG-004 were more abundant, while Veillonella, Tyzzerella 4, Clostridium innocuum group, Ruminococcus gnavus group, Escherichia-Shigella, and an uncultured Ruminococcaceae family genus were less abundant in women compared to men. In women, only baseline Eubacterium ventriosum group abundance correlated with EGCG+RES-induced changes in SkM-Ox. In men, low Dorea, Barnsiella, Anaerotruncus, Ruminococcus, Subdoligranulum, Coprococcus, Eubacterium ventriosum group, Ruminococcaceae UCG-003, and a Ruminococcaceae family genus abundance, and high Blautia abundance at baseline were associated with improvements in SkM-Ox. Changes in whole-body fat oxidation were not associated with gut microbiota features. We conclude that baseline microbiota composition predicts changes in SkM-Ox as a result of EGCG+RES supplementation in men but not in women. Men may be more prone to diet-induced, gut microbiota-related improvements in cardiometabolic health. These sex-differences should be further investigated in future precision-based intervention studies.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Diet and decreased gut microbiome diversity has been associated with acute pancreatitis (AP) risk. However, differences in dietary intake, gut microbiome, and their impact on microbial end metabolites have not been studied in AP. We aimed to determine differences in (i) dietary intake (ii) gut microbiome diversity and sulfidogenic bacterial abundance, and (iii) serum short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) and hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) concentrations in AP and control subjects. METHODS This case-control study recruited 54 AP and 46 control subjects during hospitalization. Clinical and diet data and stool and blood samples were collected. 16S rDNA sequencing was used to determine gut microbiome alpha diversity and composition. Serum SCFA and H 2 S levels were measured. Machine learning (ML) model was used to identify microbial targets associated with AP. RESULTS AP patients had a decreased intake of vitamin D 3 , whole grains, fish, and beneficial eicosapentaenoic, docosapentaenoic, and docosahexaenoic acids. AP patients also had lower gut microbiome diversity ( P = 0.021) and a higher abundance of sulfidogenic bacteria including Veillonella sp. and Haemophilus sp., which were associated with AP risk. Serum acetate and H 2 S concentrations were significantly higher in the AP group ( P < 0.001 and P = 0.043, respectively). ML model had 96% predictive ability to distinguish AP patients from controls. DISCUSSION AP patients have decreased beneficial nutrient intake and gut microbiome diversity. An increased abundance of H 2 S-producing genera in the AP and SCFA-producing genera in the control group and predictive ability of ML model to distinguish AP patients indicates that diet, gut microbiota, and their end metabolites play a key role in AP.

Abstract
Colorectal carcinoma has increasingly been reported to be associated with gut microbial dysbiosis. Bacteroides, Fusobacterium, Faecalibacterium, Blautia, etc., are gut microbes commonly associated with colorectal carcinoma. Gut microbial dysregulation secondary to infectious, inflammatory, toxin exposure or change in dietary habits coupled with the disruption of the inner mucosal layer overlying the luminal epithelium is hypothesized as the inciting events leading to microbial invasion and subsequent tumorigenesis. Although the precise mechanism is unclear, disruption of normal host responses like inflammation, apoptosis, cellular proliferation, free radical injury, production of oncogenic toxins, etc., is postulated to play a role. We report a case of Veillonella bacteremia in a patient with metastatic colorectal carcinoma without a preceding history of periodontal disease. The patient was managed with ampicillin-sulbactam, which was followed by subsequent negative blood cultures. This case report signifies the association of gut microbiota like Veillonella with colorectal carcinoma and the importance of subsequent screening for colorectal cancer following Veillonella bacteremia.

Abstract
Background Bone loss and deformation due to damage caused by injury or recurrent invasive infections presents a major clinical obstacle. While bone substitute biomaterials promote osseous tissue regeneration, their application in sites complicated by microbial infections such as osteomyelitis, is limited. Bioactive glass biomaterials (Bioglass) have been shown to have efficient mechanisms of repairing the integrity of bone, while inhibiting growth of a range of bacterial strains. There are several commercially available bioactive glass compounds, each with a unique chemical composition. One compound in particular, S53P4, has demonstrated antimicrobial effects in previous studies but the antimicrobial activity of the parent compound 45S5 has not been investigated. Results To assess whether antimicrobial activity is common among bioglass compounds, 45S5-the parent compound, was evaluated in comparison to S53P4 for antibacterial and antibiofilm effects against multiple strains of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria associated with various types of osteomyelitis. Experiments of antimicrobial effects in liquid cultures demonstrated that both compounds were antimicrobial against various microbial genera including S. gordonii, V. parvula, P. aeruginosa and MRSA; particles of the smallest size (32–125 µm) invariably showed the most robust antimicrobial capabilities. When employed against biofilms ecological biofilms grown on hydroxyapatite, 45S5 particles produced a stronger reduction in biofilm mass compared to S53P4 particles when considering small particle ranges. Conclusion We found that 45S5 seems to be as effective as S53P4 and possibly even more capable of limiting bacterial infections. The efficacy of bioactive glass was not limited to inhibition of planktonic growth, as it also extended to bacterial biofilms. The increased antibacterial activity of 45S5 compared to S53P4 is true for a variety of size ranges.

Abstract
Background Veillonella species are an opportunistically pathogenic commensal anaerobic Gram-negative coccus commonly found in the oral, genitourinary, respiratory, and intestinal tract of humans and some animals. Infection is rare, even in immunocompromised hosts, and has been identified to cause a wide array of different infections, including endocarditis, osteomyelitis, and meningitis. Case presentation An 82-year-old Caucasian male retired ex-gymnast presented to the emergency department with a 2-week history of acute on chronic lower back pain without clear precipitant. He displayed no systemic symptoms, and had not sustained any recent injuries. Initial blood and radiological investigation did not reveal an infective or mechanical cause for his pain; however, a few days into admission, he developed a fever and signs of sepsis. A thorough septic screen was performed, including a spinal magnetic resonance imaging scan, which did not reveal any abnormalities. Blood cultures revealed Veillonella parvula bacteremia, with subsequently repeated magnetic resonance imaging displaying rapid disseminated infection including bilateral psoas abscess, discitis, and osteomyelitis. Infective endocarditis was later identified with echocardiogram. He received intravenous ceftriaxone and later oral amoxicillin and clavulanic and recovered on 6-month follow-up. Conclusions This case illustrates the potential pathogenicity and unexpected rapid course of Veillonella parvula infection even in an immunocompetent host presenting with back pain. This case highlights the critical importance of a thorough septic screen when investigating patients for early signs of sepsis.

Abstract
We report the first case of bacteremia caused by Veillonella atypica in a morbid elderly female patient who developed obstructive pyelonephritis. She was treated with ceftriaxone and ureteral stenting; this is the first report of V. atypica infection in humans. Species identification was performed by multiplex PCR and sequencing of rpoB. The strain was susceptible to metronidazole and clindamycin but resistant to benzylpenicillin, ampicillin, ampicillin/sulbactam, and moxifloxacin.

Abstract
Veillonella species are commensal bacteria of the human oral, gut, and vaginal microbiota that are rarely identified as clinically relevant pathogens. Here, we describe a novel case of Veillonella atypica bacteremia in a patient with biopsy-proven alcoholic hepatitis. Veillonella species have been correlated with disease severity and hepatic encephalopathy in liver diseases such as autoimmune hepatitis and cirrhosis. Their abundance has also been recently observed to be increased in alcoholic hepatitis, where postinflammatory infections are known to impact mortality. This case report highlights the possible clinical manifestations that result from significant gut dysbiosis in patients with severe alcoholic hepatitis. Early identification and treatment of Veillonella bacteremia in susceptible populations could be crucial to survival given this organism's predilection for causing life-threatening infections, including meningitis, endocarditis, and osteomyelitis.

Abstract
We present the case of a 50-year-old man presenting with fever, back pain, persistent bacteremia with Veillonella dispar, echocardiographic evidence of a tricuspid valve vegetation increasing in size, and magnetic resonance imaging suggesting new vertebral osteomyelitis. He was successfully treated with intravenous ceftriaxone for six weeks. Deep-seated infections secondary to Veillonella species are rare, but cases of endocarditis, osteomyelitis, and meningitis have been reported in the literature. Given Veillonella species are normal human commensals present in the oropharyngeal flora, we suspect our patient developed native tricuspid valve endocarditis and vertebral osteomyelitis as a complication of either poor dentition or contaminated injection drug use paraphernalia and subsequent hematogenous seeding.

Abstract
Veillonella dispar is a Gram-negative anaerobic coccus involved in only a few human diseases. We report the second case of bacteremia due to this microorganism in an elderly patient. A 72-year-old man with a history of bladder cancer presented with diarrhea, vomiting, and fever for 48 hours. After the diagnosis of septic shock, four sets of blood cultures were taken, and three of them yielded V. dispar. Resistance to metronidazole, penicillin, and piperacillin-tazobactam was documented. Treatment with clindamycin was started, and the patient was discharged after improvement in his general condition.

Abstract
Patients with refractory diabetes are defined as type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients; they cannot achieve optimal glycemic control and exhibit persistent elevations of hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) ≥8% while on appropriate therapy. Hyperglycemia can lead to severe microvascular/macrovascular complications. However, in contrast to T2D, few studies have focused specifically on the gut microbiota in refractory diabetes. To examine this issue, we recruited 79 subjects with T2D and refractory diabetes (RT2D), and all subjects received standard therapy with Metformin or other hypoglycemic agents with or without insulin for at least one year. The α-diversity displayed no significant difference, whereas the β-diversity showed a marginal significance (p = 0.054) between T2D and RT2D. The evaluation of taxonomic indices revealed reductions in both Akkermansia muciniphila and Fusobacterium and a corresponding enrichment of Bacteroides vulgatus, Veillonella denticariosi among those with RT2D. These microbial markers distinguished RT2D from T2D with an acceptable degree of discrimination (area under the curve (AUC) = 0.719, p < 0.01) and were involved in several glucose-related functional pathways. Furthermore, the relative abundance of Akkermansia muciniphila was negatively correlated with HbA1c. Our combined results reveal unique features of the gut microbiota in RT2D and suggest that the evaluation of the gut microbiota could provide insights into the mechanisms underlying glycemic control and the impact of therapeutic modalities in patients with RT2D.

Abstract
Veillonella atypica is a bacterium that is present in the gut and the oral cavity of mammals and plays diverse roles in different niches. A recent study demonstrated that Veillonella is highly associated with marathon running and approved that V. atypica gavage improves treadmill run time in mice, revealing that V. atypica has a high biotechnological potential in improving athlete performance. However, a comprehensive analysis of the genetic diversity, function traits, and genome editing method of V. atypica remains elusive. In the present study, we conducted a systemically comparative analysis of the genetic datasets of nine V. atypica strains. The pan-genome of V. atypica consisted of 2,065 homologous clusters and exhibited an open pan-genome structure. A phylogenetic analysis of V. atypica with two different categories revealed that V. atypica OK5 was the most distant from the other eight V. atypica strains. A total of 43 orthologous genes were identified as CAZyme genes and grouped into 23 CAZyme families. The CAZyme components derived from accessory clusters contributed to the differences in the ability of the nine V. atypica strains to utilize carbohydrates. An integrated analysis of the metabolic pathways of V. atypica suggested that V. atypica strains harbored vancomycin resistance and were involved in several biosynthesis pathways of secondary metabolites. The V. atypica strains harbored four main Cas proteins, namely, CAS-Type IIIA, CAS-Type IIA, CAS-Type IIC, and CAS-Type IIID. This pilot study provides an in-depth understanding of and a fundamental knowledge about the biology of V. atypica that allow the possibility to increase the biotechnological potential of this bacterium.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vertebral osteomyelitis can be attributed to many factors including immunosuppression, diabetes, malignancy, collagen disease, periodontal disease, open fractures, and endoscopic procedures. Anaerobic bacteria, such as Veillonella species, are found in the oral cavity and are rarely implicated in the infection. This report describes vertebral osteomyelitis secondary to a dental abscess with positive Veillonella cultures. CASE DESCRIPTION A 76-year-old man presented to the hospital due to back pain with a four-day history of fever and chills. CT scans revealed several abscesses in the lumbar region as well as indications of vertebral osteomyelitis. After a psoas drain, the patient began antibiotics with a combination of ampicillin-sulbactam, metronidazole, and levofloxacin, but due to the patient's penicillin allergy, he was initially desensitized to this antibiotic for a significant period of time. Laminectomies, foraminotomies, and facetectomies were performed, but the infection spread to vertebral levels. The patient was then switched to a combination of vancomycin, metronidazole, and levofloxacin which eliminated the infection. Final laminectomy was performed with posterior segmental instrumentation and arthrodesis. Post-operatively, there were no signs of infection. The patient recovered well and regained mobility. Deeper examination of the patient's medical history revealed a severe tooth abscess immediately before the onset of bacteremia. CONCLUSION We believe that a delay in the onset of antibiotic treatment is what led to the initial bacteremia that ultimately took root in the lower lumbar vertebrae. To the best of our ability, we could identify only one other case that linked vertebral osteomyelitis to the oral cavity.

Abstract
We describe the case of a one-year-old boy who presented at the emergency department with a sudden onset of fulminant edema of the right eyelid. He had been suffering from a varicella zoster virus (VZV) infection for 5 days. A secondary bacterial infection of varicella skin lesions was suspected. Computed tomography of the orbit revealed pronounced superficial soft tissue inflammation of the right periorbit, without intraorbital extension. There was a spontaneous rupture of the right upper eyelid and a culture of the released fluid grew the anaerobic organism Veillonella parvula. The patient was treated with clindamycin for 2 months and made a slow, yet full recovery.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Veillonella parvula is an anaerobic Gram-negative coccus rarely involved in bone and joint infections. PATIENTS AND METHOD We report the case of a Veillonella parvula vertebral osteomyelitis (VO) in a female patient without any risk factor. RESULTS The 35-year-old patient was immunocompetent and presented with Veillonella parvula VO. She was admitted to hospital for inflammatory lower back pain. The discovertebral sample was positive for Veillonella parvula. Literature data on Veillonella VO is scarce. Reported cases usually occurred in immunocompromised patients. Diagnosis delay can be up to four months. Patients are usually afebrile. Outcome with antimicrobial treatment alone is favorable in half of cases. Other patients must undergo surgery. CONCLUSIONS Veillonella VO may occur in immunocompetent patients and have a clinical spectrum of mechanical lower back pain.

The gut microbiome of Mexican children affected by obesity. Anaerobe 2018; 55:11-23. Abstract
Obesity is a metabolic disorder and global health issue. In Mexico 34.4% of children between 5 and 11 years-old are overweight or obese. Here we address this issue studying the gut microbiome in a sample of Mexican children affected by obesity. We performed metagenomic shotgun-sequencing of DNA isolated from fecal samples from a cohort of normal weight and obese Mexican children using Illumina platform with HiSeq 2500. We also examined their metabolic factors and fecal short-chain fatty acids concentration. The results show that a remarkable dysbiosis of bacteria, archaea and viruses was not observed in the obese children group compared to the normal weight group; however, the archaeal community exhibited an increase of unclassified Methanobrevibacter spp. in obese children. The bacterial communities of all participants were clustered into three different enterotypes. Most normal weight children have a gut bacterial community dominated by Ruminococcus spp. (Enterotype 3), while most obese children had a community dominated by Prevotella spp. (Enterotype 2). On the other hand, changes in the gut microbiome were correlated with clinical metadata and could be used to stratify individuals based on their phenotype. The species Megamonas spp. were over-represented in obese children, whereas members of the family Oscillospiraceae were depleted in the same individuals and negatively correlated with levels of serum cholesterol. A microbiome comparative metabolic pathway analysis showed that two KEGG pathway modules of glycolysis, Glycolysis I (from Glucose 6-Phosphate), and Glycolysis II (from Fructose 6-Phosphate) were significantly overrepresented in normal weight children. Our results establish specific alterations in the gut microbiome of Mexican children affected of obesity, along with clinical alterations, providing information on the microbiome composition that may be useful for prognosis, diagnosis, and treatment.

Abstract
Introduction. Diagnosing clinically significant infection caused by Veillonella species can be a challenge. Veillonella species are usually found in polymicrobial processes and are often regarded as a contaminant. Additionally, they are slow to grow in culture and this can lead to a delay in diagnosis or a missed diagnosis. Veillonella species rarely cause serious infections, but have been found to cause bacteraemia and osteomyelitis. Case presentation. A 67-year-old man with a history of treated prostate cancer presented with 2 weeks of progressive lower back pain and weakness. He had no signs or symptoms of active infection. He was found to have multiple lytic lesions in his lumbar spine that were initially suspected to be secondary to metastatic cancer. However, tissue and blood cultures were ultimately consistent with infection by Veillonella species. Conclusion. This case report highlights the fact that uncommon illnesses can often present like common disease processes. Because of the radiological appearance of the patient’s lesions and his lack of infectious symptoms, a diagnosis of metastatic cancer was initially thought to be likely. Relying on the pathology and culture data, and waiting on the initiation of antimicrobials until the diagnosis was accurately established, were important factors in diagnosing and treating this infection. Veillonella species can be true pathogens when found in isolation and associated with bacteraemia. Additionally, they can cause an indolent infection that can lead to osteomyelitis. Failure to accurately diagnose this infection in a timely manner would have led to ongoing debility and diagnostic uncertainty for this patient.

Abstract
The gut microbiome may have an important influence on the development of diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM2). To better understand the DM2 pandemic in ethnic minority groups in China, we investigated and compared the composition and richness of the gut microbiota of healthy, normal glucose tolerant (NGT) individuals and DM2 patients from two ethnic minority groups in Xinjiang, northwest China, the Uygurs and Kazaks. The conserved V6 region of the 16S rRNA gene was amplified by PCR from the isolated DNA. The amplified DNA was sequenced and analyzed. An average of 4047 high quality reads of unique tag sequences were obtained from the 40 Uygurs and Kazaks. The 3 most dominant bacterial families among all participants, both healthy and DM2 patients, were the Ruminococcaceae, Lachnospiraceae, and Enterobacteriaceae. Significant differences in intestinal microbiota were found between the NGT individuals and DM2 patients, as well as between the two ethnic groups. Our findings shed new light on the gut microbiome in relation to DM2. The differentiated microbiota data may be used for potential biomarkers for DM2 diagnosis and prevention.

Abstract
Previously, Veillonella species had been considered as nonpathogenic and rarely caused serious infections. We report a case of 25-year-old man with osteomyelitis caused by Veillonella species. He was admitted to the hospital due to an open fracture to the left radial bone caused by industrial washing machine accident, and emergency surgery was performed. However, wound infections occurred one week after the operation. Although Acinetobacter baumannii and Serratia marcescens were cultured from the pus, obligate anaerobic bacteria were not detected at that point. Debridement was repeated and antibiotics were changed according to the result of bacterial culture and drug sensitivity. Despite this, the infection was poorly controlled. On the 5th debridement, granulomatous bone tissues on pseudarthrosis were found for the first time at the infection site. Although no bacteria was detected with aerobic culture, anaerobic incubation revealed Gram-negative cocci which was later identified as Veillonella species by 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. His condition improved without any additional debridement after adding effective antibiotics against Veillonella species. It is well known that prolonged infection with aerobes consumes oxygen in the infection site and leads the environment to more favorable conditions for anaerobic bacteria, thus we speculated that prolonged infection with bacteria such as S. marcescens induced the favorable environment for Veillonella species. Physicians should realize the importance of anaerobic culture method in routine practice, especially in complicated cases such as the present case. In this article, we reviewed case reports of Veillonella infection and summarized the clinical features of this organism.
