Spatial analysis of schizotypal personality traits in Chinese male youths: evidence from a GIS-based analysis of Sichuan

Factor structure and measurement invariance of Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire-Brief Revised (Updated) in India

AIM

Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire-Brief Revised-Updated (SPQ-BRU) is an easy-to-conduct, theoretically consistent, and psychometrically better measure of schizotypal personality. However, its study is limited to developed countries. Thus, in the present study, we tested the factor structure and measurement invariance of SPQ-BRU in India.

METHODS

A sample of 734 college students was selected from two sites (n = 614 from Muzaffarnagar in western Uttar Pradesh and n = 120 from Guhana in Haryana). Confirmatory factor analysis was used to test the good fitness of the different models of SPQ-BRU and the measurement invariance across sex and region.

RESULTS

The first-order nine-factor model was a better-fit model (among a set of first-order and second-order models), whereas the second-order three-factor model was a more parsimonious good-fit model of SPQ-BRU. The nine-factor model was strongly invariant across sex and region. Women had higher social anxiety, ideas of reference, and lower constricted affect than men. Moreover, the Gohana sample was higher on several schizotypal personality facades than the Muzaffarnagar sample.

CONCLUSIONS

The present study supported the cross-cultural validity of schizotypal personality and partially established a reliable and valid SPQ-BRU-Hindi language version.

Implications of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for targeted recruitment of older adults with dementia and their caregivers in the community: A retrospective analysis

5.5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's dementia (AD) or related dementias. Developing evidence-based interventions for these people and their caregivers (dyads) is a public health priority, and is highly dependent on recruiting representatives from the community. Precision recruitment methodologies are needed to improve the efficiency of this process. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) offer the potential to determine location trends of an older adult population of people living with dementia in the community and their caregivers.

American Community Survey (ACS) 2015 5-year estimates were analyzed at the census tract level in ESRI ArcMap v. 10.5.1. Datasets included summarized estimates of age, gender, income, and education in Maryland. Using a two-step process, geographic regions were identified in ArcMap that contained various combinations of available data variables. These areas were compared to participant locations from a previously completed traditional recruitment effort to determine overlap (Dementia Behavior Study - R01AGO41781).

The largest number of existing participants were identified in derived regions defined by combining age, education, gender, and income variables; predicting 184 (79%) of 234 participants regardless of the population density within census tracts. 208 (89%) were identified when matching this variable combination to the highest density census tracts (city/urban), and 66 (28%) in regions with the lowest population density (rural).

This study successfully defined specific geographic regions in the state of Maryland that overlapped with a large number of known dementia dyad locations obtained via traditional recruitment efforts. Implications for these findings allow for more targeted recruitment efforts of difficult to recruit populations, and less utilization of resources for doing so.

Basic self-disturbance, neurocognition and metacognition: A pilot study among help-seeking adolescents with and without attenuated psychosis syndrome

AIM

The goal of this pilot study was to assess the association between basic self-disturbance (SD) and deficits in neurocognitive and metacognitive functioning among help-seeking adolescents with and without attenuated psychosis syndrome (APS).

METHODS

Sixty-one non-psychotic, help-seeking adolescents (age 13-18) were assessed with the examination of anomalous self-experience, the structured interview for prodromal syndromes and a new metacognitive approach to neurocognitive assessment applied to two non-social (executive functions and verbal memory) and two social (theory of mind and emotion recognition) domains. After each answer, subjects were also requested to indicate their level of confidence in the answer and to decide whether they desired it to be "counted" toward their total score on the task. Each volunteered answer earned a 5-cent gain if correct, but an equal fine if wrong.

RESULTS

As hypothesized, metacognitive monitoring and control had a significant contribution to the prediction of SD over and above neurocognitive functioning and attenuated psychotic symptoms. However, the direction of this association was positive rather than negative. Also, inconsistent with or hypothesis, it was not moderated by the presence of APS.

CONCLUSIONS

These pilot results provide preliminary support a modest association between SD and metacognition, which is not reducible to neurocognition and APS. In addition, they raise an intriguing possibility regarding metacognitive monitoring and control being indicators of hyper-reflectivity that characterizes individuals with SD. However, further research with larger samples and high-stress assessment conditions are needed to assess this possibility.
