Abstract
Objectives: Osteoarthritis (OA) stands as the prevailing progressive musculoskeletal disease, serving as the primary cause of chronic pain and activity limitations among adults over 40. Flavan-3-ols, common polyphenolic compounds, are believed to harbor anti-inflammatory and anti-aging properties. This study explores the relationship between flavan-3-ol intake and osteoarthritis risk in individuals over the age of 40 in the US. Methods: This study included 7452 participants over the age of 40 from three cycles (2007-2008, 2009-2010, and 2017-2018) of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Information on OA history was obtained via home surveys. Information on flavan-3-ol monomers intake was obtained using a survey from the Food and Nutrient Database for Dietary Studies. We used a logistic regression model and restricted cubic spline to analyze the relationships between flavan-3-ol monomers and OA. Stratified analyses were also conducted in this study. Results: There were 1056 participants with OA and 6396 without OA. Compared to the first tertile (T1) group, the adjusted odds ratio with a 95% confidence interval (CI) of logistic regression model 2 for the flavan-3-ol T2 group was 1.296 (0.979-1.715) (p = 0.068), the OR for (-)-epigallocatechin was 1.292 (1.025-1.629) (p = 0.032), and the OR for (-)-epicatechin 3-gallate was 1.348 (1.013, 1.793) (p = 0.042). A dose-response curve indicated a non-linear association (p for non-linearity <0.05) between OA and total flavan-3-ol monomers (nadir point: 483.29 mg, 95% CI: 0.61-0.90). No interaction effects were found in the subgroup analysis. Conclusions: In individuals over 40 in the US, the average daily dietary intake of flavan-3-ol monomers manifests a J-shaped relationship with OA risk.

Abstract
This study was conducted to evaluate the protective effects of epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) against ovarian toxicity in cyclophosphamide-treated mice and to verify the possible involvement of phosphorylated Akt, FOXO3a and rpS6 in the EGCG actions. Mice received saline solution (i.p.; control) or a single dose of cyclophosphamide (200 mg/kg body weight, i.p.) or mice were pretreated with N-acetylcysteine (150 mg/kg body weight, i.p.; positive control) or with EGCG (5, 25 or 50 mg/kg body weight, i.p.) once daily for three days followed by injection with single dose of cyclophosphamide (200 mg/kg body weight, i.p.). Thereafter, the mice were euthanized, and the ovaries were harvested and destined to histological (follicular morphology and activation), immunohistochemistry (cleaved caspase-3 and TNF-α) and fluorescence (mitochondrial activity and GSH concentrations) analyses. Furthermore, we examined the participation of p-Akt, p-FOXO3a and p-rpS6 in the protective effects of EGCG in cyclophosphamide-induced ovarian damage by immunohistochemical staining. The results showed that pretreatment with N-acetylcysteine or EGCG at 25 and 50 mg/kg before cyclophosphamide administration preserved the normal follicular morphology, prevented primordial follicle loss, reduced atresia, inflammation, and mitochondrial damage, and increased GSH concentrations compared to the only cyclophosphamide treatment. Additionally, pretreatment with 25 mg/kg EGCG regulated phosphorylated Akt, FOXO3a and rpS6 after cyclophosphamide treatment. In conclusion, short-time pretreatment with 25 mg/kg EGCG can prevent follicle loss in cyclophosphamide-treated mice by reducing oxidative damage, inflammation, and apoptosis, and regulating of p-Akt, p-FOXO3a and p-rpS6.

Abstract
Background Much observational research reported that tea consumption decreases the risk of osteoarthritis (OA), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and osteoporosis (OP) which are the three major bone disorders. However, the observed correlation is inconclusive. To determine the causal relationship between genetically predicted tea intake and OA, RA, and OP, we performed a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study based on large samples. Methods The European population's genome-wide association meta-analysis (GWAS) dataset identified SNPs associated with tea consumption was obtained from Neale Lab's analysis of UK Biobank data that comprised 349,376 participants of European ancestry. We extracted genetic data for knee OA (17,885 controls and 4,462 cases), hip OA (50,898 controls and 12,625 cases), and RA (43,923 controls and 14,361 cases) from the UK Biobank and OP cases (93083 controls and 1,175 cases) from FinnGen Data Freeze 2. A MR study was conducted to examine the effect of selected single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and OA, RA, and OP risk. Several sensitivity analyses were performed with weighted median and inverse-variance weighted methods for estimating the causal effects. Results In this MR study, the genetically predicted per one cup increase of tea consumption was not associated with knee OA (OR 1.11,95% CI: 0.79-1.55) using IVW with random effect. Genetic predisposition to tea consumption was not associated with hip OA (OR: 1.20, 95% CI: 0.84-1.71), RA (OR: 1.24 95% CI: 0.81-1.91), and OP (OR: 1.11, 95% CI: 0.89, 1.39). Following the sensitivity analysis, there was no potential pleiotropy. Conclusion According to our study, According to our study, there was no statistical power to confirm a causal relationship between tea consumption and the risk of knee OA, hip OA, RA, and OP.

Abstract
Although the evidence is inconclusive, epidemiological studies strongly suggest that increased exposure to electromagnetic radiation (EMR) increases the risk of brain tumors, parotid gland tumors, and seminoma. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified mobile phone radiofrequency radiation as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B). Humans being are inadvertently being exposed to EMR as its prevalence increases, mainly through mobile phones. Radiation exposure is unavoidable in the current context, with mobile phones being an inevitable necessity. Prudent usage of medicinal plants with a long history of mention in traditional and folklore medicine and, more importantly, are safe, inexpensive, and easily acceptable for long-term human use would be an appealing and viable option for mitigating the deleterious effects of EMR. Plants with free radical scavenging, anti-oxidant and immunomodulatory properties are beneficial in maintaining salubrious health. Green tea polyphenols, Ginkgo biloba, lotus seedpod procyanidins, garlic extract, Loranthus longiflorus, Curcuma amada, and Rosmarinus officinalis have all been shown to confer neuroprotective effects in validated experimental models of study. The purpose of this review is to compile for the first time the protective effects of these plants against mobile phone-induced neuronal damage, as well as to highlight the various mechanisms of action that are elicited to invoke the beneficial effects.

Abstract
Knee Osteoarthritis (OA) is a progressive degenerative joint disease affecting the quality of life of the elderly population. There is considerable evidence that nutraceuticals from natural herbs may play a significant role in inflammation and joint destruction in OA. We review the current status of some of the commonly used nutraceuticals in Indian market - Boswellia, Aflapin, Chondroitin sulphate, Glucosamine sulphate, Collagen peptide, Curcumin, Fish Oil, Ginger, Green tea, and Rosehip extract. We have summarized their mechanism of action, biological effects, toxicities and efficacy in the management of Knee OA. These supplements have been found to be effective in knee OA in various studies. No serious side effects have been reported for any of these supplements. Overall, our study identifies and support the use of these nutraceuticals to provide symptomatic relief to patients with knee OA and justify their use as an adjunct therapy for the management. More good quality trials are needed to provide definitive answers to questions related to their efficacy and safety for OA prevention and treatment.

Abstract
Epimeric catechin and epicatechin peracetates offer the possibility to explore the number of conformers needed for the absolute configuration determination without affecting the reliability of the assignment. Comparisons between experimental and DFT B3PW91/DGDZVP calculated curves showed that, in molecules where the conformational flexibility generates a large number of conformers, it is possible to significantly reduce the number of conformers needed to generate VCD results that provide secure absolute configuration assignment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although tea consumption has been reported to have various health benefits in humans, its association with health-related quality of life (HRQOL) has not been investigated directly. We aimed to examine the relationship between tea consumption and HRQOL among older Chinese adults. METHODS We analyzed community-based cross-sectional data of 5,557 older Chinese individuals aged 60 years or older who participated in the Weitang Geriatric Diseases study. Information on tea consumption and HRQOL assessed by the European Quality of Life-5 dimensions (EQ-5D) were collected by questionnaires. We estimated the relationship of tea consumption and the EQ-5D index score using linear regression models and the association between tea consumption and self-reported EQ-5D health problems using logistic regression models. RESULTS The EQ-5D index score was higher for habitual tea drinkers than their counterparts. In multivariate linear analyses controlling for socio-demographic conditions, health conditions, and lifestyle habits, the differences in ED-5D index score between individuals with and without tea drinking habits was 0.012 (95% confidence interval, 0.006-0.017). In multivariate logistic analyses, habitual tea drinking was inversely associated with reporting of problems in EQ-5D dimensions mobility (odds ration [OR], 0.44; 95% CI: 0.23-0.84); pain/discomfort (OR, 0.74; 95% CI: 0.61-0.90); and anxiety/depression (OR, 0.60; 95% CI: 0.38-0.97). These associations were more evident for black or oolong tea than green tea. CONCLUSION Habitual tea consumption was associated with better HRQOL in older adults.

Abstract
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small, non-coding RNA species that are highly evolutionarily conserved, from higher invertebrates to man. Up to 1000 miRNAs have been identified in human cells thus far, where they are key regulators of the expression of numerous targets at the post-transcriptional level. They are implicated in various processes, including cell differentiation, metabolism, and inflammation. An expanding list of miRNAs is known to be involved in the pathogenesis of common, non-autoimmune inflammatory diseases. Interestingly, osteoarthritis (OA) is now being conceptualized as a metabolic disease, as there is a correlation among hyperuricemia and metabolic syndrome (MetS). Experimental evidence suggests that metabolic deregulation is a commonality between these different pathological entities, and that miRNAs are key players in the modulation of metabolic routes. In light of these findings, this review discusses the role of miRNAs in OA and gouty arthritis, as well as the possible therapeutic targetability of miRNAs in these diseases.

Abstract
Previous studies, including those from our laboratory, have demonstrated that the natural flavonoid isoliquiritigenin (ISL) is a promising agent for bone destructive diseases. However, the mechanisms underlying its anti-osteoclastogenic effects are still far from clear. Here, we evaluated the potential alterations of autophagy and nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) during anti-osteoclastogenic effects by ISL in vitro and in vivo. We observed that ISL inhibited the receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL)-induced osteoclastogenesis and suppressed autophagic microtubule-associated protein light chain 3 (LC3)-II and Beclin 1 accumulation. ISL treatment resulted in the interruption of several specific features for autophagy in osteoclast precursors, including acidic vesicular organelle formation, LC3-II accumulation, and appearance of autophagic vacuoles. The RANKL-stimulated expression levels of autophagy-related genes and proteins also diminished in ISL-treated osteoclast precursors. The reactivation of autophagy by rapamycin almost reversed the ISL-elicited anti-osteoclastogenic effects. Interestingly, ISL inhibited the RANKL-stimulated NF-κB expression and nuclear translocation, whereas the NF-κB inhibitor Bay 11-7082 markedly suppressed the RANKL-induced autophagic activation. Consistent with the in vitro results, the administration of ISL could attenuate osteoclastogenic cathepsin K, autophagic LC3, and NF-κB expression to protect against inflammatory calvarial bone erosion in vivo. Our findings highlight the inhibition of NF-κB-dependent autophagy as an important mechanism of ISL-mediated anti-osteoclastogenic activity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the association between regular Chinese green tea consumption and the risk of diabetic retinopathy (DR) in diabetic patients in China. METHODS 100 DR patients and 100 age-sex-matched diabetic controls without retinopathy were recruited in a clinic-based, case-control study. DR was defined from retinal photographs and detailed information on Chinese green tea consumption of the participants was collected through a face-to-face interview. RESULTS The crude odds ratio [OR] of Chinese green tea consumption for DR was 0.49 (95% confidence interval: 0.26-0.90). When stratified by sex, the protective effect of Chinese green tea consumption on DR was statistically significant in women (P = 0.01) but not in men (P = 0.63). After adjusting for age, sex, and other confounders, DR was significantly associated with Chinese green tea consumption (OR = 0.48; P = 0.04), higher systolic blood pressure (OR = 1.02; P = 0.05), longer duration of diabetes (OR = 1.07; P = 0.02), and the presence of family history of diabetes (OR = 2.35; P = 0.04). CONCLUSIONS Diabetic patients who had regularly drunk Chinese green tea every week for at least one year in their lives had a DR risk reduction of about 50% compared with those who had not. Regular Chinese green tea consumption may be a novel approach for the prevention of DR.

Abstract
Tea is a popular daily beverage worldwide. Modulation and modifications of its basic components like catechins, alkaloids, proteins and carbohydrate during fermentation or extraction process changes organoleptic, gustatory and medicinal properties of tea. Through these processes increase or decrease in yield of desired components are evident. Considering the varied impacts of parameters in tea production, storage and processes that affect the yield, extraction of tea biomolecules at optimized condition is thought to be challenging. Implementation of technological advancements in green chemistry approaches can minimize the deviation retaining maximum qualitative properties in environment friendly way. Existed extraction processes with optimization parameters of tea have been discussed in this paper including its prospects and limitations. This exhaustive review of various extraction parameters, decaffeination process of tea and large scale cost effective isolation of tea components with aid of modern technology can assist people to choose extraction condition of tea according to necessity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although in the last decade several studies have addressed the protective role of black and green tea on several diseases, including cancer, there are only few and controversial studies on the effect of tea on benign and malignant thyroid diseases. METHODS An age and gender group matched case-control study conducted in Athens, Greece, was designed. 113 Greek patients with histologically confirmed thyroid cancer and 286 patients with benign thyroid diseases along with 138 healthy controls were interviewed with a pre-structured questionnaire in person by trained interviewers. RESULTS An inverse association between chamomile tea consumption and benign/malignant thyroid diseases was found (P < 0.001). The odds of chamomile tea consumption, two to six times a week, after controlling for age, gender and BMI, were 0.30 (95% CI: 0.10-0.89) and 0.26 (95% CI: 0.12-0.5) for developing thyroid cancer and benign thyroid diseases, respectively when compared with not consumption. The duration of consumption was also inversely associated with the diseases. Thirty years of consumption significantly reduced the risk of thyroid cancer and benign thyroid diseases development by almost 80%. Similar, although weaker protective association, was found for sage and mountain tea. Adjustment for smoking, alcohol and coffee consumption did not alter the results. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest for the first time that drinking herbal teas, especially chamomile, protects from thyroid cancer as well as other benign thyroid diseases.

Abstract
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a progressive degenerative joint disease that has a major impact on joint function and quality of life. Nutraceuticals and dietary supplements derived from herbs have long been used in traditional medicine and there is considerable evidence that nutraceuticals may play an important role in inflammation and joint destruction in OA. We review the biological effects of some medicinal fruits and herbs - pomegranate, green tea, cat's claw, devil's claw, ginger, Indian olibaum, turmeric and ananas - in an attempt to understand the pivotal molecular targets involved in inflammation and the joint destruction process and to summarize their toxicities and efficacy for OA management. So far there is insufficient reliable evidence on the effectiveness of ginger, turmeric and ananas. Pomegranate and green tea only have preclinical evidence of efficacy due to the lack of clinical data. In vivo and clinical studies are required to understand their targets and efficacy in OA. Limited in vitro and in vivo evidence is available for cat's claw and Indian olibaum. More extensive studies are required before long-term controlled trials of whole cat's claw and Indian olibaum extracts, or isolated active compounds, are carried out in patients with OA to determine their long-term efficacy and safety. Devil's claw has not been rigorously tested to determine its antiarthritic potential in in vitro and in vivo models. There is strong clinical evidence of the effectiveness of devil's claw in pain reduction. However, high-quality clinical trials are needed to determine its effectiveness. No serious side effects have been reported for any fruits and herbs. Overall, these studies identify and support the use of nutraceuticals to provide symptomatic relief to patients with OA and to be used as adjunct therapy for OA management. More high-quality trials are needed to provide definitive answers to questions related to their efficacy and safety for OA prevention and/or treatment.

Abstract
Osteoarthritis is a condition caused in part by injury, loss of cartilage structure and function, and an imbalance in inflammatory and anti-inflammatory pathways. It primarily affects the articular cartilage and subchondral bone of synovial joints and results in joint failure, leading to pain upon weight bearing including walking and standing. There is no cure for osteoarthritis, as it is very difficult to restore the cartilage once it is destroyed. The goals of treatment are to relieve pain, maintain or improve joint mobility, increase the strength of the joints and minimize the disabling effects of the disease. Recent studies have shown an association between dietary polyphenols and the prevention of osteoarthritis-related musculoskeletal inflammation. This review discusses the effects of commonly consumed polyphenols, including curcumin, epigallocatechin gallate and green tea extract, resveratrol, nobiletin and citrus fruits, pomegranate, as well as genistein and soy protein, on osteoarthritis with an emphasis on molecular antiosteoarthritic mechanisms.
