Fabrication of Continuous Microfibers Containing Magnetic Nanoparticles by a Facile Magneto-Mechanical Drawing

Three-Dimensional Printable Magnetic Microfibers: Development and Characterization for Four-Dimensional Printing

This study proposes a novel and simple fabrication method of magnetic microfibers, employing filament stretching three-dimensional (3D) printing, and demonstrates the capacity of four-dimensional (4D) printing of the proposed magnetic microfibers. A ferromagnetic 3D printing filament is prepared by the mixture of neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) and polylactic acid (PLA), and we investigate the characteristics of the ferromagnetic filament by mixing ratio, magnetic properties, mechanical properties, and rheological properties through experiments. By thermal extrusion of the ferromagnetic filament through a 3D printer nozzle, various thicknesses (80-500 μm) and lengths (less than ∼5 cm) of ferromagnetic microfibers are achieved with different printing setups, such as filament extrusion amount and printing speed. The printed ferromagnetic microfibers are magnetized to maintain a permanent magnetic dipole moment, and 4D printing can be achieved by the deformations of the permanently magnetized microfibers under magnetic fields. We observe that the mixing ratio, the thickness, and the length of the magnetized microfibers provide distinct deformation of the microfiber for customization of 4D printings. This study exhibits that the permanently magnetized microfibers have a great potential for smart sensors and actuators. Furthermore, we briefly present an application of our proposed magnetic microfibers for bionic motion actuators with various unique undulating and oscillating motions.

Recent applications of electrical, centrifugal, and pressurised emerging technologies for fibrous structure engineering in drug delivery, regenerative medicine and theranostics

Advancements in technology and material development in recent years has led to significant breakthroughs in the remit of fiber engineering. Conventional methods such as wet spinning, melt spinning, phase separation and template synthesis have been reported to develop fibrous structures for an array of applications. However, these methods have limitations with respect to processing conditions (e.g. high processing temperatures, shear stresses) and production (e.g. non-continuous fibers). The materials that can be processed using these methods are also limited, deterring their use in practical applications. Producing fibrous structures on a nanometer scale, in sync with the advancements in nanotechnology is another challenge met by these conventional methods. In this review we aim to present a brief overview of conventional methods of fiber fabrication and focus on the emerging fiber engineering techniques namely electrospinning, centrifugal spinning and pressurised gyration. This review will discuss the fundamental principles and factors governing each fabrication method and converge on the applications of the resulting spun fibers; specifically, in the drug delivery remit and in regenerative medicine.

Magnetic-Electrospinning Synthesis of γ-Fe2O3 Nanoparticle-Embedded Flexible Nanofibrous Films for Electromagnetic Shielding

The exploration of a new family of flexible and high-performance electromagnetic shielding materials is of great significance to the next generation of intelligent electronic products. In this paper, we report a simple magnetic-electrospinning (MES) method for the preparation of a magnetic flexible film, γ-Fe₂O₃ nanoparticle-embedded polymeric nanofibers. By introducing the extra magnetic field force on γ-Fe₂O₃ nanoparticles within composite fibers, the critical voltage for spinning has been reduced, along with decreased fiber diameters. The MES fibers showed increased strength for the magnetic field alignment of the micro magnets, and the attraction between them assisted the increase in fiber strength. The MES fibers show modifications of the magnetic properties and electrical conductivity, thus leading to better electromagnetic shielding performance.

Continuous Dual-Track Fabrication of Polymer Micro-/Nanofibers Based on Direct Drawing

This manuscript proposes a continuous and straightforward method for fabricating suspended micro- and nanodiameter polymer fibers using an automated single-step drawing system. Termed track spinning, the system is based on a simple manual fiber drawing process that is automated by using two oppositely rotating tracks. Fibers are continuously spun by direct contact of polymer solution coated tracks followed by mechanical drawing as the distance between the tracks increases. The device can draw single or multifilament arrays of micro- and nanofibers from many kinds of polymers and solvent combinations. To demonstrate, fibers were pulled from polymer solutions containing polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) and polyurethane (PU). Fiber morphology was smooth and uniform, and the diameter was sensitive to draw length and polymer solution/melt properties. Polymer nanofibers with diameters as small as 450 nm and length of 255 mm were produced. The track spinning method is able to form fibers from high viscosity solutions and melts that are not compatible with some other nanofiber fabrication methods. Further, the setup is simple and inexpensive to implement and nozzleless and does not require an electric field or high-velocity jets, and the tracks can be widened and patterned/textured to enhance fiber yield and manufacturing precision.
