Abstract
Thin composite films comprising two primary representatives of conducting polymers, poly(3, 4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) and polypyrrole (PPy), with eco-friendly cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) were prepared through electrochemical polymerization. The combination of CNC and PEDOT (or PPy) results in the formation of films with highly different surface topography and thickness. Intriguingly, different surface conductivity of PEDOT and PPy was revealed by atomic force microscopy albeit that the electrochemical properties were rather similar. The biological properties of the composites in contact with prospective human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSC) and cardiomyocytes derived from hiPSC demonstrated good cytocompatibility of both composites and their potential in engineering of electro-sensitive tissues. The as-prepared conducting, eco-friendly and cytocompatible composites are thus promising candidates for biomedical applications where stimuli-responsivity is a crucial cell-instructive property.

Abstract
Fiber electronics, such as those produced by the electrospinning technique, have an extensive range of applications including electrode surfaces for batteries and sensors, energy storage, electromagnetic interference shielding, antistatic coatings, catalysts, drug delivery, tissue engineering, and smart textiles. New composite materials and blends from conductive-semiconductive polymers (C-SPs) offer high surface area-to-volume ratios with electrical tunability, making them suitable for use in fields including electronics, biofiltration, tissue engineering, biosensors, and "green polymers". These materials and structures show great potential for embedded-electronics tissue engineering, active drug delivery, and smart biosensing due to their electronic transport behavior and mechanical flexibility with effective biocompatibility. Doping, processing methods, and morphologies can significantly impact the properties and performance of C-SPs and their composites. This review provides an overview of the current literature on the processing of C-SPs as nanomaterials and nanofibrous structures, mainly emphasizing the electroactive properties that make these structures suitable for various applications.

Abstract
Recently, polymers have been attracted great attention because of their thermoelectric materials' excellent mechanical properties, specifically their cost-effectiveness and scalability at the industrial level. In this study, the electropolymerization conditions (applied potential and deposition time) of PEDOT films were investigated to improve their thermoelectric properties. The morphology and Raman spectroscopy of the PEDOT films were analyzed according to their applied potential and deposition time. The best thermoelectric properties were found in films grown at 1.3 V for 10 min, with an electrical conductivity of 158 ± 8 S/cm, a Seebeck coefficient of 33 ± 1 µV/K, and a power factor of 17 ± 2 µW/K·m2. This power factor value is three times higher than the value reported in the literature for electropolymerized PEDOT films in acetonitrile using lithium perchlorate as a counter-ion. The thermal conductivity was found to be (1.3 ± 0.3) × 10-1 W/m·K. The highest figure of merit obtained at room temperature was (3.9 ± 1.0) × 10-2 using lithium perchlorate as a counter-ion. In addition, three-dimensional (3D) PEDOT nanonetworks were electropolymerized inside 3D anodic aluminum oxide (3D AAO), obtaining lower values in their thermoelectric properties.

Abstract
Recent findings of microplastics in marine food such as fish, crabs and shrimps necessitate the need to develop biodegradable packaging materials. This study reports on the development of a biodegradable packing material from cellulose nanofibril-polyvinyl alcohol nanocomposite embedded with silver nanoparticles. Microcrystalline cellulose was isolated from sugarcane bagasse via the kraft process followed by conversion of cellulose I to cellulose II using NaOH/urea/water solution. The nanofibrils were then isolated using (2,2,6,6-Tetramethylpiperidin-1-yl) oxyl (TEMPO) and used as a reinforcing element in polyvinyl alcohol composite prepared through solvent casting. The tensile strength, water solubility, optical properties, water vapor permeability and wettability of the prepared films were then evaluated. The antimicrobial potency of the films was evaluated using the disc diffusion antimicrobial assay against selected microorganisms.

Abstract
The formation of solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) in "water-in-salt" electrolyte (WiSE) expands the electrochemical stability window of aqueous electrolytes beyond 3.0 V. However, the parasitic hydrogen evolution reaction that drives anode corrosion, cracking, and the subsequent reformation of SEI still occurs, compromising long-term cycling performance of the batteries. To improve cycling stability, an unsaturated monomer acrylamide (AM) is introduced as an electrolyte additive, whose presence in WiSE reduces its viscosity and improves ionic conductivity. Upon charging, AM electropolymerizes into polyacrylamide, as confirmed both experimentally and computationally. The in situ polymer constitutes effective protection layers at both anode and cathode surfaces, and enables LiMn2 O4 ||L-TiO2 full cells with high specific capacity (157 mAh g-1 at 1 C), long-term cycling stability (80% capacity retention within 200 cycles at 1 C), and high rate capability (79 mAh g-1 at 30 C). The in situ electropolymerization found in this work provides an alternative and highly effective strategy to design protective interphases at the negative and positive electrodes for high-voltage aqueous batteries of lithium-ion or beyond.

Electrical and Capacitive Response of Hydrogel Solid-Like Electrolytes for Supercapacitors. Polymers (Basel) 2021; 13:polym13081337. Abstract
Flexible hydrogels are attracting significant interest as solid-like electrolytes for energy storage devices, especially for supercapacitors, because of their lightweight and anti-deformation features. Here, we present a comparative study of four ionic conductive hydrogels derived from biopolymers and doped with 0.1 M NaCl. More specifically, such hydrogels are constituted by κ-carrageenan (κC), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), poly-γ-glutamic acid (PGGA) or a phenylalanine-containing polyesteramide (PEA). After examining the morphology and the swelling ratio of the four hydrogels, which varies between 483% and 2356%, their electrical and capacitive behaviors were examined using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Measurements were conducted on devices where a hydrogel film was sandwiched between two identical poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) electrodes. The bulk conductivity of the prepared doped hydrogels is 76, 48, 36 and 34 mS/cm for PEA, PGGA, κC and CMC, respectively. Overall, the polyesteramide hydrogel exhibits the most adequate properties (i.e., low electrical resistance and high capacitance) to be used as semi-solid electrolyte for supercapacitors, which has been attributed to its distinctive structure based on the homogeneous and abundant distribution of both micro- and nanopores. Indeed, the morphology of the polyestermide hydrogel reduces the hydrogel resistance, enhances the transport of ions, and results in a better interfacial contact between the electrodes and solid electrolyte. The correlation between the supercapacitor performance and the hydrogel porous morphology is presented as an important design feature for the next generation of light and flexible energy storage devices for wearable electronics.

Abstract
Poly(vinyl alcohol)/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PVA/PEDOT) nanofibers were synthesized as a positive electrode for high-performance asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC). PVA/PEDOT nanofibers were prepared through electrospinning and electrodeposition meanwhile reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was obtained by electrochemical reduction. The PVA/PEDOT nanofibers demonstrated cauliflower-like morphology showing that PEDOT was uniformly coated on the smooth cross-linking structure of PVA nanofibers. In addition, the ASC showed a remarkable energy output efficiency by delivering specific energy of 21.45 Wh·kg−1 at a specific power of 335.50 W·kg−1 with good cyclability performance (83% capacitance retained) after 5000 CV cycles. The outstanding supercapacitive performance is contributed from the synergistic effects of both PVA/PEDOT//rGO, which gives promising materials for designing high-performance supercapacitor applications.

Abstract
Conducting polymer scaffolds combine the soft-porous structures of scaffolds with the electrical properties of conducting polymers. In most cases, such functional systems are developed by combining an insulating scaffold matrix with electrically conducting materials in a 3D hybrid network. However, issues arising from the poor electronic properties of such hybrid systems, hinder their application in many areas. This work reports on the design of a 3D electroactive scaffold, which is free of an insulating matrix. These 3D polymer constructs comprise of a water soluble conducting polymer (PEDOT:PSS) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The insertion of the MWCNTs in the 3D polymer matrix directly contributes to the electron transport efficiency, resulting in a 7-fold decrease in resistivity values. The distribution of CNTs, as characterized by SEM and Raman spectroscopy, further define the micro- and nano-structural topography while providing active sites for protein attachment, thereby rendering the system suitable for biological/sensing applications. The resulting scaffolds, combine high porosity, mechanical stability and excellent conducting properties, thus can be suitable for a variety of applications ranging from tissue engineering and biomedical devices to (bio-) energy storage.

Abstract
The effects of the type of electrolyte and film thickness on the structural and thermoelectric properties of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) thin films on indium-tin-oxide (ITO) substrates prepared using electropolymerization were investigated. Two electrolytes were prepared using two different solvents: a water/methanol solvent (protic solvent) and acetonitrile (aprotic solvent) with 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) and LiCF3SO3, typically included in electrolytes as dopants. The electrochemical properties of the two electrolytes were analyzed; it was found that the polymerization process for EDOT on an ITO substrate varied based on the electrolyte used. When the electropolymerization time was increased, the surface morphology of the PEDOT films prepared using the water/methanol solvent appeared to contain grains approximately 100 nm in size whereas the PEDOT films prepared using acetonitrile appeared to contain aggregated grains connected by polymeric networks. Even though there were differences in the surface morphology and chemical bonds determined using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy/attenuated total reflectance analysis, the thermoelectric properties were strongly dependent on the film thickness and were only weakly dependent on the type of electrolyte used. The highest power factor was 41.3 μW (m−1 K−2) for a PEDOT film with a thickness of 0.5 μm prepared using the water/methanol solvent electrolyte. The effects of electrolyte type and film thickness on the structural and thermoelectric properties of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) thin films on indium-tin-oxide (ITO) substrates prepared using electropolymerization were investigated.![]()

Abstract
Conducting polymer scaffolds can promote cell growth by electrical stimulation, which is advantageous for some specific type of cells such as neurons, muscle, or cardiac cells. As an additional feature, the measure of their impedance has been demonstrated as a tool to monitor cell growth within the scaffold. In this work, we present innovative conducting polymer porous scaffolds based on poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT):xanthan gum instead of the well-known PEDOT:polystyrene sulfonate scaffolds. These novel scaffolds combine the conductivity of PEDOT and the mechanical support and biocompatibility provided by a polysaccharide, xanthan gum. For this purpose, first, the oxidative chemical polymerization of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene was carried out in the presence of polysaccharides leading to stable PEDOT:xanthan gum aqueous dispersions. Then, by a simple freeze-drying process, porous scaffolds were prepared from these dispersions. Our results indicated that the porosity of the scaffolds and mechanical properties are tuned by the solid content and formulation of the initial PEDOT:polysaccharide dispersion. Scaffolds showed interconnected pore structure with tunable sizes ranging between 10 and 150 μm and Young's moduli between 10 and 45 kPa. These scaffolds successfully support three-dimensional cell cultures of MDCK II eGFP and MDCK II LifeAct epithelial cells, achieving good cell attachment with very high degree of pore coverage. Interestingly, by measuring the impedance of the synthesized PEDOT scaffolds, the growth of the cells could be monitored.
