Abstract
In this paper, a TM polarization multi-band absorber is achieved in a graphene-Ag asymmetrical grating structure. The proposed absorber can achieve perfect absorption at 1108 nm, 1254 nm, and 1712 nm (the absorption exceeds 98.4% at the three peaks). Results show that the perfect absorption effect originates from the excitation of magnetic polaritons (MPs) in the silver ridge grating; a LC equivalent circuit model is utilized to confirm the finite-difference-time-domain (FDTD) simulation. The influences of the incident angle, polarization angle, and geometrical size on the absorption spectrum are investigated. Moreover, a quadruple band absorber and a quintuple band absorber are also designed by introducing more silver grating ridges in one period. The proposed graphene-Ag asymmetrical structure has some advantages compared with other absorbers such as the ability to be independently tuned and a simple structure. Thus, the proposed structure can be applied in the areas of multiple absorption switches, near-infrared modulators, and sensors.

Abstract
A commercially viable metal-dielectric-metal configured triple-band metamaterial absorber is offered in this paper. It is an aggregation of four compact symmetric circles, with a swastika-shaped metal structure, which are bonded by two split-ring resonators (SRRs). Copper (annealed) of electrical conductivity 5.8 × 107 Sm-1 is used for the ground plate and resonator portion of the top layer and an FR 4 dielectric of permittivity 4.3 is used as a substrate. The structural parameters of the unit cell were determined by a trial and error method. FIT-based 3D simulation software (CST microwave studio, 2019 version was used to characterize the proposed perfect metamaterial absorber (PMA). Three resonance peaks were observed at frequencies 3.03, 5.83 and 7.23 GHz with an absorbance of 99.84%, 99.03% and 98.26%, respectively. The numerical result has been validated by some authentic validation methods. Finally, a microwave network analyzer (PNA) of Agilent N5227 with waveguide ports were deployed for measurement. The simulation and experimental results show better harmony. The proposed PMA has a unique design and a small dimension with higher absorption compared to other contemporary studies. This special type of polarization, insensitive S- and C-band PMA, is designed for a telecommunication system via full-time raw satellite and radar feeds.

Abstract
Spectral sensing plays a crucial part in imaging technologies, optical communication, and other fields. However, complicated optical elements, such as prisms, interferometric filters, and diffraction grating, are required for commercial multispectral detectors, which hampers their advance toward miniaturization and integration. In recent years, metal halide perovskites have been emerging for optical-component-free wavelength-selective photodetectors (PDs) because of their continuously tunable bandgap, fascinating optoelectronic properties, and simple preparation processes. In this review, recent advances in wavelength-selective perovskite PDs, including narrowband PDs, dual-band PDs, multispectral-recognizable PDs, and X-ray PDs, are highlighted, with an emphasis on device structure designs, working mechanisms, and optoelectronic performances. Meanwhile, the applications of wavelength-selective PDs in image sensing for single-/dual-color imaging, full-color imaging, and X-ray imaging are introduced. Finally, the remaining challenges and perspectives in this emerging field are presented.

Abstract
Multiple resonance modes in an optical absorber are necessary for nanophotonic devices and encounter a challenge in the visible range. This article designs a multiple-channel plasmonic metamaterial absorber (PMA) that comprises a hexagonal arrangement of metal-shell nanorods in a unit cell over a continuous thin metal layer, operating in the visible range of the sensitive refractive index (RI) and temperature applications. Finite element method simulations are utilized to investigate the physical natures, such as the absorptance spectrum, magnetic flux and surface charge densities, electric field intensity, and electromagnetic power loss density. The advantage of the proposed PMA is that it can tune either three or five absorptance channels with a narrowband in the visible range. The recorded sensitivity and figure of merit (S, FOM) for modes 1-5 can be obtained (600.00 nm/RIU, 120.00), (600.00 nm/RIU, 120.00 RIU-1), (600.00 nm/RIU, 120.00 RIU-1), (400.00 nm/RIU, 50.00 RIU-1), and (350.00 nm/RIU, 25.00 RIU-1), respectively. Additionally, the temperature sensitivity can simultaneously reach 0.22 nm/°C for modes 1-3. The designed PMA can be suitable for RI and temperature sensing in the visible range.

Abstract
Metatronics, as a feasible paradigm of nanocircuits using effective electronic elements (e.g., nanocapacitors, nanoinductors, and nanoresistors), provides the possibility for light manipulation in subwavelength scales assisted by the circuit-related technologies in electronics. As a representative technique in electronics, Smith Chart provides a fast, less-computation and graphical approach to solve the problems related to impedance matching. Here, we transplant the Smith Chart into the paradigm of optical metatronics to develop an analytical approach for impedance matching for light propagation and coined the name of graphical metatronics. In this approach, the impedance characteristics of four basic types of ultrathin metatronic layers are creatively mapped into each rotation trace on the complex Γ mathematical plane (Γ means the reflection coefficient). The impedance matching problems can be graphically solved by searching for feasible rotation traces on the Γ plane without full-wave simulations. Based on this approach, various applications related to impedance matching (e.g., antireflection coating, perfect transmission, absorber, etc.) are developed analytically and validated by numerical results. The proposed approach constructs the bridge among Smith Chart, plasmonics and photonics, providing a fast, visualized and less-computation route and guideline to develop various nanophotonic structures and devices for impedance-matching applications.

Abstract
Optical absorbers with multiple absorption channels are required in integrated optical circuits and have always been a challenge in visible and near-infrared (NIR) region. This paper proposes a perfect plasmonic absorber (PPA) that consists of a closed loop and a linked intersection in a unit cell for sensitive biosensing applications. We elucidate the physical nature of finite element method simulations through the absorptance spectrum, electric field intensity, magnetic flux density, and surface charge distribution. The designed PPA achieves triple channels, and the recorded dual-band absorptance reaches 99.64 and 99.00% nm, respectively. Besides, the sensitivity can get 1000.00 and 650 nm/RIU for mode 1 and mode 2, respectively. Our design has a strong electric and magnetic field coupling arising from the mutual inductance and the capacitive coupling in the proposed plasmonic system. Therefore, the designed structure can serve as a promising option for biosensors and other optical devices. Here, we illustrated two examples, i.e., detecting cancerous cells and diabetes cells.

Abstract
Achieving perfect electromagnetic wave absorption with a sub-nanometer bandwidth is challenging, which, however, is desired for high-performance refractive-index sensing. In this work, we theoretically study metasurfaces for sensing applications based on an ultra-narrow band perfect absorption in the infrared region, whose full width at half maximum (FWHM) is only 1.74 nm. The studied metasurfaces are composed of a periodic array of cross-shaped holes in a silver substrate. The ultra-narrow band perfect absorption is related to a hybrid mode, whose physical mechanism is revealed by using a coupling model of two oscillators. The hybrid mode results from the strong coupling between the magnetic resonances in individual cross-shaped holes and the surface plasmon polaritons on the top surface of the silver substrate. Two conventional parameters, sensitivity (S) and figure of merit (FOM), are used to estimate the sensing performance, which are 1317 nm/RIU and 756, respectively. Such high-performance parameters suggest great potential for the application of label-free biosensing.

Abstract
We investigate an all-metal and simple-fabrication grating with an ultranarrow band absorption spectrum in the telecom window range. The influences of structure parameters on the absorption characteristics are investigated. For the best design, the absorption efficiency reaches 94% under normal incidence, with the full width at half-maximum of only 0.17 nm. We demonstrate that this ultranarrow band absorption is the result of the dominant excitation of the Rayleigh anomaly mode. The corresponding figure of merit is calculated to be 8530RIU-1. The applied procedure has the potential to also be used in designing high-performance reflection-based sensors in other wavelength ranges.

Abstract
We propose an alignment-free and polarization-selective bidirectional absorber composed of a one-dimensional bilayer Au grating array buried in a silicon nitride spacer. The absorptivity of the designed structure is more than 95% (77%) under normal forward (backward) TM-polarized light incidence, and is more than 80% (70%) within a forward (backward) incident angle up to 30°. The great bidirectional absorption performance is illustrated by the resonance coupling of the surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) resonance, the propagating surface plasmon (PSP) resonance and the localized surface plasmon (LSP) resonance under TM-polarized wave illumination. Moreover, the excitation of the Fano-like resonance mode of the proposed metasurface can produce two significantly different peaks in the absorption spectrum under the oblique TM-polarized incidence, which is beneficial for the plasmon-sensing application. Therefore, the proposed bidirectional metasurface absorber can be a candidate in the application of optical camouflage, thermal radiation, solar cells and optical sensing.

Abstract
We developed a flexible perfect absorber based on a thin-film nano-resonator, which consists of metal-dielectric-metal integrated with a dielectric overlay. The proposed perfect absorber exhibits a high quality (Q-)factor of ~ 33 with a narrow bandwidth of ~ 20 nm in the visible band. The resonance condition hinging on the adoption of a dielectric overlay was comprehensively explored by referring to the absorption spectra as a function of the wavelength and thicknesses of the overlay and metal. The results verified that utilizing a thicker metal layer improved the Q-factor and surface smoothness, while the presence of the overlay allowed for a relaxed tolerance during practical fabrication, in favor of high fidelity with the design. The origin of the perfect absorption pertaining to zero reflection was elucidated by referring to the optical admittance. We also explored a suite of perfect absorbers with varying thicknesses. An angle insensitive performance, which is integral to such a flexible optical device, was experimentally identified. Consequently, the proposed thin-film absorber featured an enhanced Q-factor in conjunction with a wide angle of acceptance. It is anticipated that our absorber can facilitate seminal applications encompassing advanced sensors and absorption filtering devices geared for smart camouflage and stealth.

Abstract
Designing various nanostructures to achieve narrowband light reflection resonances is desirable for optical sensing applications. In this work, we theoretically demonstrate two narrowband light reflection resonances resulting from the excitations of the zero-order transverse magnetic (TM) and transverse electric (TE) waveguide modes, in a waveguide structure consisting of an Au sphere array on an indium tin oxide (ITO) spacer on a silica (SiO2) substrate. The positions of the light reflection resonances can be tuned easily, by varying the array periods of gold (Au) spheres or by changing the thickness of the ITO film. More importantly, the light reflection resonances have a very narrow bandwidth, the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of which can be reduced to only several nanometers for the zero-order TM and TE waveguide modes. The conventionally defined performance parameters of sensors, sensitivity (S) and figure of merit (FOM), have quite high values of about 80 nm/RIU and 32, respectively, in the visible wavelength range.

Abstract
In this paper, we propose and numerically investigate an ultra-broadband, wide-angle, and polarization-independent metasurface absorber based on periodic hexagon-latticed titanium (Ti) nanoring arrays over a continuous Ti film. The proposed absorber can achieve more than 90% absorptivity under normal incidence, ranging from 350 to 1453 nm, and the average absorption is up to 95.6%. Additionally, the absorptivity still remained beyond 70% when the incident angles varied from 0° to 60°. The simulations of electric field distributions indicate that the broadband absorption performance can be ascribed to the superposition of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) originated from the nanopillars and nanoholes, respectively. The proposed approach is simple and inexpensive, and the metal material is optional. Therefore, we believe that the proposed absorber will be a candidate for many potential applications, such as thermophotovoltaic cells, thermal emitters, and optoelectronic devices.

Abstract
A simple design of triple-band perfect light absorber (PLA) based on hybrid metasurface in visible region has been presented in this work, which turns out to be applicable for refractive index (RI) sensing. Distinct from previous designs, the proposed hybrid metasurface for visible PLA is only consisted of periodic silicon cross nanostructure arrays and gold substrate. The periodic silicon cross arrays deposited on the gold substrate contribute to excite the guided modes under the normal incident light illumination. According to the simulation results, it can be found that three perfect absorption peaks of 98.1%, 98.7%, and 99.6% which are located at 402.5 THz, 429.5 THz, and 471.5 THz, respectively, have been clearly observed in PLA. This triple-band perfect absorption effect could be attributed to the intrinsic loss of silicon material originated from the guided mode excitations caused by the standing waves of different orders. It has been confirmed that the perfect absorption properties of the PLA can be easily regulated by changing the geometric parameters of the unit-cell nanostructure. Furthermore, the designed PLA served as a RI sensor can achieve sensitivity of about 25.3, 41.3, and 31.9 THz /refractive index unit (RIU). It can be believed that the proposed design of PLA for RI sensing would provide great potential applications in sensing, detecting, the enhanced visible spectroscopy, etc.

Abstract
Plasmonic effect using a cross-hair can convey strongly localized surface plasmon modes among the separated composite nanostructures. Compared to its counterpart without the cross-hair, this characteristic has the remarkable merit of enhancing absorptance at resonance and can make the structure carry out a dual-band plasmonic perfect absorber (PPA). In this paper, we propose and design a novel dual-band PPA with a gathering of four metal-shell nanorods using a cross-hair operating at visible and near-infrared regions. Two absorptance peaks at 1050 nm and 750 nm with maximal absorptance of 99.59% and 99.89% for modes 1 and 2, respectively, are detected. High sensitivity of 1200 nm refractive unit (1/RIU), figure of merit of 26.67 and Q factor of 23.33 are acquired, which are very remarkable compared with the other PPAs. In addition, the absorptance in mode 1 is about nine times compared to its counterpart without the cross-hair. The proposed structure gives a novel inspiration for the design of a tunable dual-band PPA, which can be exploited for plasmonic sensor and other nanophotonic devices.

Abstract
The effect of ultra-narrowband light absorption enhancement is presented by using metamaterials with symmetry-broken square silicon patches (SSPs). The symmetry of the SSP can be broken by introducing a narrow slit deviating from its center. By breaking the symmetry of the SSPs, slit resonance mode with standing wave patterns can be excited, and the locations of the absorption peaks can be well estimated by using the Fabry-Pérot (F-P) cavity model. Although there is no excitation of surface plasmon resonance, ultra-narrowband light absorption can be achieved by minimizing the reflectance through perfect impedance matching and simultaneously eliminating the transmittance by the metallic substrate. Good ultra-narrowband absorption features can be maintained as the parameters of the buffer layer and the SSPs are altered. When this type of symmetry-broken SSPs-based metamaterial is used in refractive-index sensors, it shows excellent sensing properties due to its stable ultra-narrowband absorption enhancement.

Abstract
Perfect broadband absorbers have increasingly been considered as important components for controllable thermal emission, energy harvesting, modulators, etc. However, perfect absorbers which can operate over a wide optical regime is still a big challenge to achieve. Here, we propose and numerically investigate a perfect broadband near-infrared absorber based on periodic array of four isosceles trapezoid prism (FITP) unit cell made of titanium (Ti) over a continuous silver film. The structure operates with low quality (Q) factor of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) because of the intrinsic high loss, which is the foundation of the broadband absorption. The high absorption of metal nanostructures mainly comes from the power loss caused by the continuous electron transition excited by the incident light inside the metal, and the resistance loss depends on the enhanced localized electric field caused by the FITP structure. Under normal incidence, the simulated absorption is over 90% in the spectrum ranging from 895 nm to 2269 nm. The absorber is polarization-independent at normal incidence, and has more than 80% high absorption persisting up to the incident angle of ~45° at TM polarization.

Abstract
High-speed optical amplitude modulation is important for optical communication systems and sensors. Moreover, nano-optical modulators are important for developing optical-communication-aided high-speed parallel-operation processors and micro-biomedical sensors for inside-blood-capillary examinations or microsurgery operations. In this paper, we have designed a plasmonic resonant tunable metasurface with barium titanate (BTO) as a nanoscale optical modulator with a high modulation index and high speed. The BTO operated well in the VIS and near-IR ranges, enabling tunable optical devices with zero dispersion and high speed. The results obtained by rigorous finite-element method simulations have shown that the hypothesized device has good potential for fast modulation in related applications, e.g., modulators in nano-optical systems, nano-optical switches and nanosensors.

Abstract
Perfect absorbers play crucial roles in optical functional devices. Among various types of absorbers, moth-eye structures are known for their excellent absorbing efficiency. In this paper, we apply an electromagnetic multipole expansion method to treat an isolated all-dielectric moth-eye structure as a large particle and calculate various electric and magnetic multipole modes within the moth-eye structure. In periodical array, the multipole modes within each particle interact with each other. These constructive or destructive interactions cause shifts in the multipole resonant peaks. The multipole modes inside the particle array introduce reflecting peaks for loss-less materials. The absorption enhancement inside moth-eye structures can be attributed to the electric field enhancement resulting from these electric and magnetic multipole modes. Based on our theoretical study, we propose a near-ideal selective absorber based on moth-eye array, which achieves near 100% absorption within wavelength range from 400 nm to 1500 nm while achieving near 0% absorption over about 1700 nm.

Abstract
We propose and investigate a wide-angle and high-efficiency absorber by using the void plasmon (VP) effect in a Fabry-Perot (FP)-like system, which consists of a perforated metal film and a ground metal plane separated by a dielectric spacer. A hybrid FP/VP resonance mode contributes to the high absorption efficiency. Besides the increased absorption, greatly enhanced localized electric-field intensity at "hot spots" (~ 2284 times) can be achieved. In addition, by varying the thickness of the perforated metal layer and the environmental refractive index, the position of resonance peak can be easily controlled. The proposed absorber can also work as a sensor for detecting the surrounding dielectric constant with the maximum value of the figure of merit (FOM) achieving 3.16 in theory. This work creates an alternative design for high-efficiency absorption devices.

Abstract
A graphene-loaded metamaterial absorber is investigated in the mid-infrared region. The light-graphene interaction is greatly enhanced by virtue of the coupled resonance through a cross-shaped slot. The absorption peaks show a significant blueshift with increasing Fermi level, enabling a wide range of tunability for the absorber. A simple circuit model well explains and predicts this modulation behavior. Our proposal may find applications in a variety of areas such as switching, sensing, modulating, and biochemical detecting.

Abstract
In this article, a lithography-free multilayer based color filter is realized using a proper series connection of two cavities that shows relatively high efficiency, high color purity, and a wide view angle. The proposed structure is a metal-insulator-metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIMIS) design. To optimize the device performance, at the first step, transfer matrix method (TMM) modeling is utilized to find the right choices of materials for each layer. Simulations are carried out later on to optimize the geometries of the layers to obtain our desired colors. Finally, the optimized devices are fabricated and experimentally characterized to evaluate our modelling findings. The characterization results of the fabricated samples prove the successful formation of efficient and wide view angle color filters. Unlike previously reported FP based designs that act as a band-stop filter in reflection mode (absorbing a narrow frequency range and reflecting the rest of the spectrum), this design generates a specific color by reflecting a narrow spectral range and absorbing the rest of the spectrum. The findings of this work can be extended to other multilayer structures where an efficient connection of cavities in a tandem scheme can propose functionalities that cannot be realized with conventional FP resonators.

Abstract
An optical diode structure with two dislocated parallel metallic gratings is proposed and investigated numerically. Dichroic optical diode transmission is realized in this structure, i.e., optical diode effect is observed in two wavebands corresponding to inverse transmission directions. In the structure, two parallel metallic gratings with different grating constants are separated by a dielectric slab in between. The first illuminated grating acts as a selector for exciting surface plasmons at a proper wavelength. The other grating acts as an emitter to realize optical transmission. When the incident direction is reversed, the roles of two gratings exchange and surface plasmons are excited at another wavelength. In dichroic transmission wavebands, the optical diode structure exhibits extraordinary transmission and possesses high optical isolation up to 1. Furthermore, the operating wavebands can be modulated by changing structure parameters.
