Studying the Adhesion Force and Glass Transition of Thin Polystyrene Films by Atomic Force Microscopy

Mechanical Properties of 3-Hydroxybutyric Acid-Induced Vesicles

The vesicle mechanical behaviors were studied upon its exposure to 3-hydroxybutyric acid using an atomic force microscope (AFM). Dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) and 3-hydroxybutyric acid were used to manufacture the vesicles at their desired ratio. The deflection of an AFM probe with respect to its displacement was measured after characterizing the vesicle adsorption. The movement was analyzed with the Hertzian model to understand the physical behavior of the vesicles. However, in the deflection just prior to the first penetration, the model was a good fit, and the vesicle mechanical moduli were calculated. The moduli became lower with the higher ratio of 3-hydroxybutyric acid to DPPC, but the moduli were saturated at 0.5 of the ratio. These results appear to be the basis for the function of the metabolism associated with 3-hydroxybutyric acid, i.e., anesthetization and glycemic control, on the physical properties of cell membranes.

Changes in Mechanical Properties of Vesicles by Mucin in Aqueous Solution

The mechanical properties of vesicles were investigated as they were prepared, according to the ratio of mucin to dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC), using an atomic force microscope (AFM). After the confirmation of the vesicle adsorption on a mica surface, an AFM-tip deflection, caused by the interaction between the tip and the vesicle, was measured. The deflection showed that the tip broke through into the vesicle twice. Each break meant a tip-penetration into the upper and lower portion of the vesicle. Only the first penetration allowed the Hertzian model available to estimate the vesicle mechanical moduli. Two moduli reduced as the ratio of mucin to DPPC increased to 0.5, but the moduli were little changed above the 0.5 ratio. These results seem to be a platform for the effect of the mucin on the plasma-membrane anchoring and cellular signaling.

The Fabrication of Oleophobic Coating and Its Application in Particulates Filtration

The stir-frying process in Chinese cooking has produced serious emissions of oily particles, which are an important source of urban air pollution. In particular, the complex composition of fine particulate may pose a threat to human respiratory and immune systems. However, current filtration methods for oily particulate fumes have low filtration efficiency, high resistance, and high equipment costs. In polypropylene (PP) electret filters, efficiency rapidly decreases and pressure drop (wind resistance) sharply increases after the adsorption of oily particles, due to the oleophilic properties of the PP fibre. We addressed this issue of filter performance degradation by fabricating a sodium perfluorooctanoate (SPFO) oleophobic coating on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) fibre membranes for oily particle filtration. The SPFO coating showed a promising oleophobic effect even at low concentrations, which suggests it has oleophobic properties for different oil types and can be modified for different substrates. This fabricated oleophobic coating is thermostable and the oleophobic effect is unaffected by temperatures from 0 to 100 °C. By modifying the SPFO coating on the PVDF membrane, a high filtration efficiency (89.43%) and low wind resistance (69 Pa) was achieved without oil adhesion, so the proposed coating can be applied in the filtration and purification of oily fine particles and offers a potential strategy for preventing atmospheric oil pollution.

Ectoine Effect on Mechanical Properties of Vesicles in Aqueous Solution

The mechanical properties of the vesicles incorporated with ectoine were studied using atomic force microscope (AFM). The vesicles were prepared with dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) by changing only the ratio of the ectoine to DPPC. After the vesicles were adsorbed on the mica substrate and their morphology were characterized, the plot of an AFM tip displacement versus the tip deflection was acquired by monitoring the behavior of the tip into the vesicle. The breakthrough of the tip into the vesicle was observed to occur twice. Each breakthrough represented a penetration of the tip into the top and bottom portions of the vesicle, respectively. The force data between the pre-contact and the first breakthrough were comparable with the Hertzian model to estimate Young's modulus and the bending modulus of the vesicles. Both moduli decreased proportionally with the increase in the ratio of ectoine to lipid up to 0.5. However, above 0.5, the moduli were slightly changed with the increase. These results of the mechanical properties appear to be due to the osmotic and volumetric effect on the headgroup packing disruption.

Glass transition behaviour of thin polymer films coated on the 3D networks of porous CNT sponges

The glass transition behaviors of thin polymer films on the sidewalls of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in CNT sponges (CNTSs) were studied. Due to the extremely large surface area of CNTS, the glass transition temperatures (Tg) of thin polystyrene (PS) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) films were measured using a routine experimental method, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). We thus provide a direct Tg comparison between the thin film and the bulk sample using the same DSC technique. For thin polymer films on the CNT sidewalls, free surface and polymer-substrate interfacial interactions co-exist. It is well-known that polymer chains at the liquid-like free surface tend to have a relatively high mobility, but the mobility in the interfacial layer near the substrate depends strongly on the polymer-substrate interaction strength. Accordingly, we tuned the polymer-substrate interaction strength by introducing an amphiphilic sodiumdodecylsulfate (SDS) molecule layer on the CNT sidewalls. The value and sign of Tg deviation were influenced by the competition between the free surface effect and the interfacial interactions. Strong polymer-substrate interactions led to a decrease in the mobility of polymer chains near the substrate and weak polymer-substrate interactions have little influence on the mobility of polymer chains near the substrate. When the polymer-substrate interactions are strong, both the free surface effect and the polymer-substrate interaction are key factors influencing the glass transition temperature. For thin polymer films having weak interactions with substrates, the free surface effect dominates the glass transition behavior and Tgs shows a large reduction. We also observed a double Tg behavior in the thin PS film and found the thickness of the PS film on the substrate was a deciding factor for controlling the spatial variation of Tg.

Interesting Facets of Surface, Interfacial, and Bulk Characteristics of Perfluorinated Ionomer Films

Ion-containing perfluorinated polymers possess unique viscoelastic properties, excellent proton conductivity, and nanophase-segregated structure all arising from the clustering of hydrophilic sulfonic acid groups within a matrix of hydrophobic fluorocarbons. When these ionomers are confined to nanothin films, a broad swathe of structural organization imparting a rich variety of surface, interfacial, and bulk characteristics can be expected. However, our understanding of perfluorinated ionomer thin film behavior is still in a rudimentary stage, and much of the research focus to date has been on its hydration-related structure and properties pertinent to electrochemical applications. Thus, many hidden gems-their interesting surface and interfacial properties-have been overlooked. In this Invited Feature Article, which is a summary of the key contributions by the author's group, including several collaborative publications on ionomer thin films, we unravel many of these facets. In addition, the article attempts to integrate knowledge acquired from a variety of investigations of different aspects of the ionomer thin films to refine and develop a consistent picture of their structure and behavior. First, we focus on the self-assembly of ionomers and show that dispersion media and hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity of the substrate can result in partial or even no coverage of substrates, shedding light on the complexity of polymer-substrate, polymer-solvent, and polymer-polymer interactions, an insight completely obscured when the spin-coating method is adopted for film creation. We demonstrate that the same ionomer can be used to create a variety of surfaces ranging from superhydrophilic to highly hydrophobic by controlling the film thickness or through the choice of substrate material. The ultrathin, hydrophilic surfaces of self-assembled Nafion ionomer films exhibit wettability switching behavior which opens the door to creating stimuli-responsive smart surfaces. The thermoresponsive behavior of the films is discussed in the context of surface (wettability) and bulk (thermal expansion) characteristics as well as a newly discovered vibrational mode. The substrate- and film thickness-dependent thermal expansion coefficients reinforce the importance of interfacial interactions and confinement on the structure/properties of these films. They also open up the potential of tuning ionomer bulk properties via substrate chemistry. The discovery of a vibrational mode that becomes thermally activated at high temperature has provided new insights into the origins of the molecular motions responsible for the α-relaxation of the Nafion ionomer as well as the underlying reason for wettability switching. Our recent neutron reflectometry study of different ionomers varying in side-chain composition/length on a platinum substrate shows that the interfacial hydration level is correlated to the side-chain length, which opens up the possibility of the controlling the interfacial electrochemistry. Finally, a systematic analysis of factors affecting proton conduction is presented to elucidate the yet-unresolved origins of the suppressed conduction of nanothin ionomer films compared to that of the bulk membrane. By revealing these interesting yet poorly understood facets of ionomer thin films, the article aims to stimulate further scientific pursuit on this topic.

Raising glass transition temperature of polymer nanofilms as a function of negative interface energy

Based on a thermodynamic approach, glass transition temperature (T_g) of substrate-supported polymer nanofilms (s-PNFs) is investigated for carbon-chain polymers, taking the role of the interface energy into consideration.
