Abstract
BACKGROUND Dental caries is one of the most common diseases of childhood. Evidence suggests that malnutrition and vitamin deficiency may increase the risk to dental caries. AIM This study aimed to determine the relationship between vitamin D and dental caries experience in children and whether vitamin D deficiency is a risk factor for tooth decay. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS A cross-sectional study was performed on 51 Egyptian children, aged from three to five years and diagnosed from Abo El-Resh Children's Hospital as 'Sufficient', 'Insufficient' or 'Deficient' in vitamin D. Children were divided into 3 equal groups. A structured questionnaire, formed of four sections, was answered by the parents. Dental examination was performed under natural daylight. Caries index (dmf), for each group, was calculated then compared. The study was conducted from July 2019 to January 2020. Associations between dmf and different variables were assessed using independent t-test. Correlation between age and dmf was assessed using Spearman's rank order correlation coefficient. Multiple linear regression model was used to study the effect of different variables on caries. RESULTS There was a weak positive correlation between age and dmf scores (β = 2.00; 95%CI, 0.73:3.26). Children playing outside experienced higher dmf (β = 1.29; 95%CI, -0.35:2.94) than those with no outside play. Children with 25(OH) D below 20 ng / ml had the highest dmfs (β = 1.01; 95%CI, -0.74:2.76). There was a significant association with teeth brushing; children not brushing their teeth showed significantly higher dmf (β = -2.21; 95%CI, -4.14:-0.28) than their counterparts. There were no significant associations of sex (β = -1.05; 95%CI, -2.68:0.59), fluoride tablets intake (β = 2.19; 95%CI, -1.25:5.63), dental visits (β = -1.43; 95%CI, -3.09:0.23), mothers' vitamin D intake during pregnancy (β = 0.71; 95%CI, -1.13:2.56), snacking (β = -1.18; 95%CI, -4.62:2.26) and parental education (β = 0.62; 95%CI, -1.18:2.42) with caries experience among the study population. CONCLUSION Vitamin D deficiency does not seem to be associated with dental caries experience of 3-5 years old Egyptian children. Out of the indicator variables, age and tooth brushing contributed significantly to the occurrence of dental caries among the study population.

Abstract
Oral hygiene refers to taking care and maintaining the cleanness of gum and teeth; a good oral hygiene practice promotes better oral health in general. Oral hygiene is the top public health concern of the population. Tooth brushing is a technique to keep oral hygiene from related complications. Therefore, this study provides the pooled prevalence of tooth brushing practice in Ethiopia. Databases searched for articles systematically across PubMed, Google Scholar, Hinari, EMBASE, and African Journals Online. Two reviewers independently conducted the selection, screening, reviewing, and data extraction using a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet and used the Joanna Briggs Institute prevalence critical appraisal tools to assess the quality of evidence. All studies conducted in Ethiopia from 2010 to 2020, reporting tooth-brushing practices extracted for and imported into the Comprehensive meta-analysis version 3.0 for further analysis. Beggs and Eggers's tests evaluated for publication bias with Higgins's method evaluated for heterogeneity. A random-effects meta-analysis model with a 95% confidence interval was computed to estimate the pooled effect size (prevalence). Furthermore, the authors employed subgroup analysis based on the study area and sample size. After reviewing 36, 10 articles fulfilled the inclusion criteria, and were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled prevalence of tooth brushing practice was 12.2% (95% CI 7.6-19.2%). The review reported a lower level of tooth-brushing practice in Ethiopia. We recommended that special attention should be given to the oral hygiene of the Ethiopian people.

Abstract
Background The goal of this study was to identify potentially important factors for the dental health though heterogeneous effects of risk factors within Chinese adolescent populations with different characteristics by analyzing the repeated cross-sectional data collected in the 3rd (2005) and 4th (2015) National Oral Health Survey. Methods We studied the relationships between the decayed, missing and filled permanent teeth (DMFT) score, which was a discrete value, with the caries risk factors (region, census type, gender, only child or not, parents' education level, tooth bushing, dentist visit history, knowledge score, sugar intake, and pit-and-fissure sealants status), though the Poisson mixture regression model, which could identify subgroups among the full population and estimate the heterogeneous effects of risk factors simultaneously. We performed a series of tests and trend analysis based on the model fitting results to explore the primary causes for the dental caries issue clearly and intuitively. Results A total of 39,049 teenagers aged 12 years were involved in the analysis. The Poisson mixture regression model clustered all individuals into three subgroups, where the mean values (standard deviations) of DMFT were 0.18 (0.56), 1.31 (1.49), and 2.91 (1.89), respectively. Model fitting results indicated that the heterogeneous effects of the involved risk factors were significant. In addition, we also found significant differences in the distributions and trends of DMFT within different categories of selected risk factors (region, census type, gender and dentist visiting history) from the projection analysis results. The estimated and projected proportions showed that the proportion of high caries risk population in the southwestern region increased by 31.8%, and will become even more severe as it will be the major component of high caries risk population in 2025. Conclusions We found that the trends for the developments and changes of dental caries within populations with different characteristics were inequality. The regional difference is the primary factor for diversified changes in DMFT. The findings in this study provide support for intervention and prevention policies for the deterioration of dental caries risk within different adolescent populations.

Abstract
Background We evaluated the effects of health-promoting school (HPS) strategy on plaque control and behavior change in high-caries schoolchildren in Taitung, Taiwan. Methods A quasi-experimental design was adopted; six intervention schools (intervention group [IG]) and six comparison schools (comparison group [CG]) were selected from elementary schools with higher-than-average caries rates (> 68%). The IG was selected using cluster sampling, and the CG was selected to match the IG. In total, the IG and CG groups included 166 and 174 children each. The selected schools implemented the HPS framework for 3 months in the 2019 academic year. An oral examination of dental plaque was administered, and a self-administered questionnaire regarding knowledge, attitude, self-efficacy, and behaviors was distributed at baseline and at 2-week follow-up. A linear and logistic regression model using generalized estimating equations (GEEs) was used to analyze the differences between baseline and the follow-up data. Results Compared with the CG, the IG had a greater reduction in plaque index among second graders (β = − 0.36) and plaque control record scores among second, fourth, and sixth graders (β = − 27.48, − 26.04, and − 18.38, respectively). The IG also exhibited a greater increase at follow-up with respect to oral health–related knowledge among second graders and fourth graders (β = 1.46 and β = 0.92, respectively), attitude toward oral hygiene behaviors among sixth graders (β = 1.78), and self-efficacy regarding flossing for sixth graders (β = 1.43). Sixth graders in the IG were significantly more likely to brush before sleeping (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 2.99) and use fluoride toothpaste (aOR = 5.88) than those in the CG. Conclusions The HPS strategy was effective in reducing dental plaque and promoting preventing behaviors in rural high-caries schoolchildren. Abstract
BACKGROUND Childhood health problems affect healthy growth. This study aimed to assess the symptoms and diseases requiring hospital visits commonly found in children in Japan and analyze their effects on health status. METHODS Anonymized data on 1315 children aged 6-14 years were obtained from a national survey questionnaire. The survey items addressed symptoms, disease names, and hospital visits. Associations between symptoms and other factors were examined by means of a contingency table analysis and logistic regression. RESULTS The proportions of responses for health status were compared for each question item; significant differences were found in age group (p < 0.01), subjective symptoms (p < 0.01), hospital visits (p < 0.01), and lifestyle (p < 0.01). The proportion of responses indicating "poor" perceived health status was high among those with subjective symptoms (4.8%) and hospital visits (4.7%). From the logistic regression, significant odds ratios were found for subjective symptoms (2.10, 95% confidence interval (C.I.) 1.15-3.83) and age group (1.98, 95% C.I. 1.05-3.72). CONCLUSION Among measures to improve quality of life from childhood, comprehensive health guidance that emphasizes understanding symptoms and includes age and living conditions is important.
