Abstract
OBJECTIVE Extreme weather events are becoming more prevalent with the increasing pace of climate change. These events negatively impact human health and put considerable strain on health care resources, including emergency departments. Within otolaryngology, acute pharyngitis is a common reason for emergency room visits (ERV). Therefore, we aimed to investigate the impact of extreme meteorological conditions on ERV rates related to acute pharyngitis. STUDY DESIGN Retrospective time-series study. SETTING ERVs related to acute pharyngitis (n = 1511) were identified at a tertiary care hospital in Vienna, Austria, between 2015 and 2018. METHODS The effects of single-day and prolonged (3-day) extreme weather events on ERVs were analyzed using a distributed lag nonlinear model. Relative risk (RR) and cumulative relative risk (cRR) were calculated over a lag period of 14 days. RR refers to the risk for pharyngitis-related ERV at extreme conditions (1st, 5th, 95th, or 99th percentile) compared to the risk at median conditions. RESULTS Same-day RR (lag0) was elevated more than 3-fold after prolonged extremely low mean temperatures (P = .028). Furthermore, same-day RR after single-day and prolonged extremely high relative humidity was elevated by 51% (P = .024) and 46% (P = .036), respectively. Significant delayed effects on cRR were observed for extreme mean temperatures, relative humidity, and mean wind speeds within 8 days and for extreme atmospheric pressure within 14 days. CONCLUSION Extreme weather events impact ERV rates for acute pharyngitis. Extremely low temperatures, high relative humidity, high atmospheric pressure, and low and high wind speeds were risk-promoting factors.

Abstract
Introduction The impact of climate change on ambient temperatures threatens to worsen pediatric pneumonia-related outcomes considerably. This study examined the associations of temperature variation and extreme temperature with pediatric pneumonia-related events using a meta-analysis. Methods We systematically searched PubMed, Medline, Embase, and Web of Science databases for relevant literature, and the quality of evidence was assessed. Fixed and random-effects meta-analyses were performed to calculate the pooled relative risks (RRs) of the associations with pneumonia-related events. Results We observed that a 1°C temperature variation increased the RR of pneumonia events by 1.06-fold (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.03-1.10). A 1°C temperature variation increased the RR by 1.10-fold of the pediatric pneumonia hospital admissions (95% CI: 1.00-1.21) and 1.06-fold of the pediatric pneumonia emergency department visits (95% CI: 1.01-1.10). Extreme cold increased the RR by 1.25-fold of the pediatric pneumonia events (95% CI: 1.07-1.45). A 1°C temperature variation increased the RR of pneumonia events in children by 1.19-fold (95% CI: 1.08-1.32), girls by 1.03-fold (95% CI: 1.02-1.05), and in temperate climate zones by 1.07-fold (95% CI: 1.03-1.11). Moreover, an increase in extreme cold increased the RR of pneumonia events in children by 2.43-fold (95% CI: 1.72-3.43), girls by 1.96-fold (95% CI: 1.29-2.98) and in temperate climate zones by 2.76-fold (95% CI: 1.71-4.47). Conclusion Our study demonstrated that pediatric pneumonia events are more prevalent among children, particularly girls, and individuals residing in temperate climate zones. Climate change represents an emergent public health threat, affecting pediatric pneumonia treatment and prevention.. Systematic Review Registration PROSPERO (CRD42022378610).

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Neighborhood socioeconomic status (SES) and greenspace can affect respiratory health. However, it is unclear whether effects of neighborhood SES and greenspace on respiratory health still exist regardless of temperature variations. METHODS This paper conducted a two-stage, age-stratified case time-series study. The first goal is to examine the associations between two temperature metrics (daily mean temperature [DMT] and diurnal temperature range [DTR]) and respiratory emergency department (ED) visits among four age groups in New York City. The second goal is to evaluate whether neighborhood SES and greenspace would be determinants of respiratory ED visits independent from temperature varying factors. A distributed lag nonlinear model was applied on ED data from 135 zip codes (October 2016 - February 2020). RESULTS Our first-stage analysis indicated that older adults aged 65+ had higher risk of ED visits (RR=2.78, 95% eCI: 2.41, 3.22; with 7 days of lag) on days with low DMT (-10°C), followed by adults aged 18-64 (RR=2.48, 95% eCI: 2.32, 2.65), children and youth aged 5-17 (RR=1.38, 95% eCI: 1.24, 1.53), and young children aged 0-4 (RR=1.04, 95% eCI: 0.96, 1.13). However, no excess respiratory ED visits were observed on days with high DMT (30°C). Higher DTR was associated with higher risk, with children and youth more susceptible when DTR was high (DTR 20°C; RR=5.70, 95% eCI: 3.42, 9.49; with 7 days of lag). The second-stage analysis indicated neighborhood SES and greenspace had significant associations with respiratory ED visits regardless of temperature variations. Specifically, Higher income and greenspace exposure were negatively associated with ED visits among all age groups. CONCLUSIONS Neighborhood SES and greenspace could affect respiratory morbidity regardless of weather conditions. Daily temperature variations accelerated the short-term risk among population subgroups under different weather conditions (e.g., higher risk of days with low DMT among older adults, higher risk of days with high DTR among children and youth aged 5-17), which could create co-effects with neighborhood SES and greenspace on respiratory health.

Abstract
State of Victoria, Australia (SVA) has a wide variation of diurnal temperatures (DTR). DTR has been reported to be associated with risk of mortality and morbidity. We examined the association between exposure to DTR and risk of all-cause mortality and emergency department (ED) presentations in the SVA. We obtained data on daily counts of deaths and ED presentations, and weather data from 1 st January 2000─2019. We applied a quasi-Poisson time-series regression analysis to examine the association between daily DTR exposures and risk of mortality and ED presentations. The analyses were queried by age, sex, seasons, ED presentations triages, and departure status. Risk of mortality and ED presentation increased by 0.33% (95% CI: 0.24%-0.43%), and 0.094% (95% CI: 0.077%-0.11%) in relation to one degree increase in the daily DTR. The association between DTR and ED presentations was stronger in children (0-15 years) (0.38% [95% CI: 0.34%-0.42%]) and the elderly (75+ years) (0.34% [95% CI: 0.29%-0.39%]). Resuscitation, which was consistently accounted for the highest vulnerability to DTR variation, increased by 0.79% (95% CI: 0.60%-0.99%). This study suggests that the risk of mortality and ED presentations associates with the increase of DTR. Children, the elderly, and their caregivers need to be made aware of the health risk posed by DTR.

Abstract
Large temperature difference is reported to be a risk factor for human health. However, little evidence has reported the effects of temperature fluctuation on sarcopenia, a senile disease characterized by loss of muscle mass and function. Here, we demonstrate that higher diurnal temperature range in humans has a positive correlation with the prevalence of sarcopenia. Fluctuated temperature exposure (10-25 °C) accelerates muscle atrophy and dampens exercise performance in mid-aged male mice. Interestingly, fluctuated temperature alters the microbiota composition with increased levels of Parabacteroides_distasonis, Duncaniella_dubosii and decreased levels of Candidatus_Amulumruptor, Roseburia, Eubacterium. Transplantation of fluctuated temperature-shaped microbiota replays the adverse effects on muscle function. Mechanically, we find that altered microbiota increases circulating aminoadipic acid, a lysine degradation product. Aminoadipic acid damages mitochondrial function through inhibiting mitophagy in vitro. And Eubacterium supplementation alleviates muscle atrophy and dysfunction induced by fluctuated temperature. Our results uncover the detrimental impact of fluctuated temperature on muscle function and provide a new clue for gut-muscle axis.

Abstract
Our study aimed to quantify the exposure-lag-response effects of the diurnal temperature range (DTR) on other infectious diarrhea (OID) in Tongcheng city and examine the vulnerable populations. Distributed lag non-linear model (DLNM) and generalized additive model (GAM) were applied jointly to quantify the association between DTR and the daily number of OID cases compared with the median DTR. Stratified analysis was performed by gender, age, and seasons of onset. There are a total of 8231 cases during this decade. We observed a j-shaped relationship between DTR and OID, with a peak point at the maximum DTR (RR: 2.651, 95% CI: 1.320-5.323) compared to the median DTR. As DTR increased from 8.2 to 10.9 °C, we found the RRs started to decrease and then rise from day 0, and the minimum value occurred on day 7 (RR:1.003, 95% CI: 0.996-1.010). From stratified analysis, we observed that females and adults are more likely to be affected by high DTR significantly. In addition, the influence of DTR was different in cold and warm seasons. High DTR in warm seasons affects the number of OID daily cases, but no statistical significance was identified in cold seasons. This study suggests a significant relationship between high DTR and the incidence risk of OID.

Abstract
Concerns are growing about the adverse health effects of ambient temperature and ambient temperature changes. However, the association between ambient temperature and ambient temperature changes on the risk of warts outpatient visits is poorly understood. Our study used the distributed lag non-linear model (DLNM) aimed to evaluate the association between ambient temperature, ambient temperature changes (including temperature change between neighboring days (TCN) and diurnal temperature range (DTR)), and warts outpatient visits. We also performed subgroup analyses in order to find susceptible populations by gender and age groups. The maximum relative risk (RR) of low ambient temperature (0 °C) for warts outpatient visits was 1.117 (95% CI: 1.041-1.198, lag 04 days), and the maximum RR of high ambient temperature (32 °C) for warts outpatient visits was 1.318 (95% CI: 1.083-1.605, lag 07 days). The large temperature drop (TCN = - 3 °C) decreased the risk of warts visits, with the lowest RR value at the cumulative exposure of lag 7 days (RR = 0.888, 95% CI: 0.822-0.959), and the large temperature rise (TCN = 2 °C) increased the risk of warts visits, with the highest RR value at the cumulative exposure of lag 7 days (RR = 1.080, 95% CI: 1.022-1.142). Overall, both low and high ambient temperatures and large temperature rise can increase the risk of warts visits, while large temperature drop is a protective factor for warts visits. However, we did not find any association between DTR and warts visits. Furthermore, subgroup analyses showed that males and the young (0-17 years old) were more sensitive to low and high ambient temperatures, and the elderly (≥ 65 years old) were more susceptible to TCN. The results may provide valuable evidence for reducing the disease burden of warts in the future.

Abstract
Mounting evidence have linked ambient air pollution and temperature with childhood pneumonia, but it is unclear whether there is an interaction between air pollution and temperature on childhood pneumonia. We aim to assess the combined effect of ambient air pollution and temperature exposure during preconception and pregnancy on pneumonia by a case-control study of 1510 children aged 0-14 years in Changsha, China. We obtained the data of childhood pneumonia from XiangYa Hospital electrical records. We estimated personal exposure to outdoor air pollution (PM10, SO2 and NO2) by inverse distance weighted (IDW) method and temperature indicators. Multiple logistic regression models were used to evaluate associations of childhood pneumonia with air pollution, temperature (T), and diurnal temperature variation (DTV). We found that exposure to industry-related air pollution (PM10 and SO2) during preconception and pregnancy were associated with childhood pneumonia, with ORs (95% CI) of 1.72 (1.48-1.98) and 2.96 (2.50-3.51) during 1 year before pregnancy and 1.83 (1.59-2.11) and 3.43 (2.83-4.17) in pregnancy. Childhood pneumonia was negatively associated with T exposure during 1 year before pregnancy and pregnancy, with ORs (95% CI) of 0.57 (0.41-0.80) and 0.85 (0.74-0.98). DTV exposure during pregnancy especially during the 1st and 2nd trimesters significantly increased pneumonia risk, with ORS (95% CI) of 1.77 (1.19-2.64), 1.47 (1.18-1.83), and 1.37 (1.07-1.76) respectively. We further observed interactions of PM10 and SO2 exposure with low T and high DTV during conception and pregnancy in relation to childhood pneumonia. This study suggests that there were interactions air pollution with temperature and DTV on pneumonia development.

Abstract
Background Diurnal temperature range (DTR) has been increasingly recognized as a risk factor for mortality and morbidity, but the association between DTR and acute lower respiratory infection (ALRI) outpatient visits has not been examined among children in China. Methods A total of 79,416 ALRI outpatient visits among children were obtained from the Guangdong Second Provincial General Hospital between 2013 and 2019. DTR was calculated by taking the difference between the maximum and the minimum temperatures. Generalized additive models using a quasi-Poisson distribution were used to model the relationship between DTR and ALRI outpatient visits. Results Diurnal temperature range was significantly associated with elevated risks of ALRI outpatient visits: the excess risks (ERs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were 2.31% (1.26, 3.36%) for ALRI, 3.19% (1.86, 4.54%) for pneumonia, and 1.79% (0.59, 3.01%) for bronchiolitis, respectively. Subgroup analyses suggested that the associations were significantly stronger during rainy seasons (ER for ALRI: 3.02%, 95% CI: 1.43, 4.64%) than those in dry seasons (ER for ALRI: 2.21%, 95% CI: 0.65, 3.81%), while no significant effect modifications were found in sex and age groups. Conclusion Diurnal temperature range may elevate the risk of ALRI outpatient visits among children in China, especially during rainy seasons. Public health policies are needed to mitigate the adverse health impacts of DTR on children.
