Abstract
Crop straws provide enormous lignocellulose resources transformable for sustainable biofuels and valuable bioproducts. However, lignocellulose recalcitrance basically restricts essential biomass enzymatic saccharification at large scale. In this study, the mushroom-derived cellobiohydrolase (LeGH7) was introduced into Trichoderma reesei (Rut-C30) to generate two desirable strains, namely GH7-5 and GH7-6. Compared to the Rut-C30 strain, both engineered strains exhibited significantly enhanced enzymatic activities, with β-glucosidases, endocellulases, cellobiohydrolases, and xylanase activities increasing by 113 %, 140 %, 241 %, and 196 %, respectively. By performing steam explosion and mild alkali pretreatments with mature straws of five bioenergy crops, diverse lignocellulose substrates were effectively digested by the crude enzymes secreted from the engineered strains, leading to the high-yield hexoses released for bioethanol production. Notably, the LeGH7 enzyme purified from engineered strain enabled to act as multiple cellulases and xylanase at higher activities, interpreting how synergistic enhancement of enzymatic saccharification was achieved for distinct lignocellulose substrates in major bioenergy crops. Therefore, this study has identified a novel enzyme that is active for simultaneous hydrolyses of cellulose and xylan, providing an applicable strategy for high biomass enzymatic saccharification and bioethanol conversion in bioenergy crops.

Abstract
Four yeast isolates were obtained from rotting wood and galleries of passalid beetles collected in different sites of the Brazilian Amazonian Rainforest in Brazil. This yeast produces unconjugated allantoid asci each with a single elongated ascospore with curved ends. Sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer-5.8 S region and the D1/D2 domains of the large subunit ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene showed that the isolates represent a novel species of the genus Spathaspora. The novel species is phylogenetically related to a subclade containing Spathaspora arborariae and Spathaspora suhii. Phylogenomic analysis based on 1884 single-copy orthologs for a set of Spathaspora species whose whole genome sequences are available confirmed that the novel species represented by strain UFMG-CM-Y285 is phylogenetically close to Sp. arborariae. The name Spathaspora marinasilvae sp. nov. is proposed to accommodate the novel species. The holotype of Sp. marinasilvae is CBS 13467 T (MycoBank 852799). The novel species was able to accumulate xylitol and produce ethanol from d-xylose, a trait of biotechnological interest common to several species of the genus Spathaspora.

Abstract
My research interest has so far been focused on metabolisms related to the "membrane" of microorganisms, such as the respiratory chain, membrane proteins, sugar uptake, membrane stress and cell lysis, and fermentation. These basic metabolisms are important for the growth and survival of cell, and their knowledge can be used for efficient production of useful materials. Notable achievements in research on metabolisms are elucidation of the structure and function of membrane-bound glucose dehydrogenase as a primary enzyme in the respiratory chain, elucidation of ingenious expression regulation of several operons or by divergent promoters, elucidation of stress-induced programed-cell lysis and its requirement for survival during a long-term stationary phase, elucidation of molecular mechanism of survival at a critical high temperature, elucidation of thermal adaptation and its limit, isolation of thermotolerant fermenting yeast strains, and development of high-temperature fermentation and green energy production technologies. These achievements are described together in this review.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Spathaspora passalidarum is a yeast with the highly effective capability of fermenting several monosaccharides in lignocellulosic hydrolysates, especially xylose. However, this yeast was shown to be sensitive to furfural released during pretreatment and hydrolysis processes of lignocellulose biomass. We aimed to improve furfural tolerance in a previously isolated S. passalidarum CMUWF1-2, which presented thermotolerance and no detectable glucose repression, via adaptive laboratory evolution (ALE). RESULTS An adapted strain, AF2.5, was obtained from 17 sequential transfers of CMUWF1-2 in YPD broth with gradually increasing furfural concentration. Strain AF2.5 could tolerate higher concentrations of furfural, ethanol and 5-hydroxymethyl furfuraldehyde (HMF) compared with CMUWF1-2 while maintaining the ability to utilize glucose and other sugars simultaneously. Notably, the lag phase of AF2.5 was 2 times shorter than that of CMUWF1-2 in the presence of 2.0 g/l furfural, which allowed the highest ethanol titers to be reached in a shorter period. To investigate more in-depth effects of furfural, intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation was observed and, in the presence of 2.0 g/l furfural, AF2.5 exhibited 3.41 times less ROS accumulation than CMUWF1-2 consistent with the result from nuclear chromatins diffusion, which the cells number of AF2.5 with diffuse chromatins was also 1.41 and 1.24 times less than CMUWF1-2 at 24 and 36 h, respectively. CONCLUSIONS An enhanced furfural tolerant strain of S. passalidarum was achieved via ALE techniques, which shows faster and higher ethanol productivity than that of the wild type. Not only furfural tolerance but also ethanol and HMF tolerances were improved.

Identification of traits to improve co-assimilation of glucose and xylose by adaptive evolution of Spathaspora passalidarum and Scheffersomyces stipitis yeasts. Abstract
Lignocellulosic biomass is a renewable raw material for producing several high-value-added chemicals and fuels. In general, xylose and glucose are the major sugars in biomass hydrolysates, and their efficient utilization by microorganisms is critical for an economical production process. Yeasts capable of co-consuming mixed sugars might lead to higher yields and productivities in industrial fermentation processes. Herein, we performed adaptive evolution assays with two xylose-fermenting yeasts, Spathaspora passalidarum and Scheffersomyces stipitis, to obtain derived clones with improved capabilities of glucose and xylose co-consumption. Adapted strains were obtained after successive growth selection using xylose and the non-metabolized glucose analog 2-deoxy-D-glucose as a selective pressure. The co-fermentation capacity of evolved and parental strains was evaluated on xylose-glucose mixtures. Our results revealed an improved co-assimilation capability by the evolved strains; however, xylose and glucose consumption were observed at slower rates than the parental yeasts. Genome resequencing of the evolved strains revealed genes affected by non-synonymous variants that might be involved with the co-consumption phenotype, including the HXT2.4 gene that encodes a putative glucose transporter in Sp. passalidarum. Expression of this mutant HXT2.4 in Saccharomyces cerevisiae improved the cells' co-assimilation of glucose and xylose. Therefore, our results demonstrated the successful improvement of co-fermentation through evolutionary engineering and the identification of potential targets for further genetic engineering of different yeast strains. KEY POINTS: • Laboratory evolution assay was used to obtain improved sugar co-consumption of non-Saccharomyces strains. • Evolved Sp. passalidarum and Sc. stipitis were able to more efficiently co-ferment glucose and xylose. • A mutant Hxt2.4 permease, which co-transports xylose and glucose, was identified.

Abstract
Considering the cost-effectiveness of bioethanol production at high temperatures, there is an enduring need to find new thermotolerant ethanologenic yeasts. In this study, a total of eighteen thermotolerant yeasts were isolated from various natural fermented products in Morocco. Ethanol production using 50 g/L glucose or 50 g/L xylose as the sole carbon source revealed potential yeasts with high productivities and volumetric ethanol productivities at high temperatures. Based on molecular identification, the selected thermotolerant fermentative isolates were affiliated with Pichia kudriavzevii, Kluyveromyces marxianus, and Kluyveromyces sp. During the simultaneous saccharification and fermentation of lignocellulosic biomass at a high temperature (42 °C), the designated yeast P. kudriavzevii YSR7 produced an ethanol concentration of 22.36 g/L, 18.2 g/L and 6.34 g/L from 100 g/L barley straw (BS), chickpea straw (CS), and olive tree pruning (OTP), respectively. It also exhibited multi-stress tolerance, such as ethanol, acetic acid, and osmotic tolerance. Therefore, the yeast P. kudriavzevii YSR7 showed promising attributes for biorefinery-scale ethanol production in the future.

Abstract
Candida tropicalis, a xylose-fermenting yeast, has the potential for converting cellulosic biomass to ethanol. Thermotolerant C. tropicalis X-17, which was isolated in Laos, was subjected to repetitive long-term cultivation with a gradual increase in temperature (RLCGT) in the presence of a high concentration of glucose, which exposed cells to various stresses in addition to the high concentration of glucose and high temperatures. The resultant adapted strain demonstrated increased tolerance to ethanol, furfural and hydroxymethylfurfural at high temperatures and displayed improvement in fermentation ability at high glucose concentrations and xylose-fermenting ability. Transcriptome analysis revealed the up-regulation of a gene for a glucose transporter of the major facilitator superfamily and genes for stress response and cell wall proteins. Additionally, hydropathy analysis revealed that three genes for putative membrane proteins with multiple membrane-spanning segments were also up-regulated. From these findings, it can be inferred that the up-regulation of genes, including the gene for a glucose transporter, is responsible for the phenotype of the adaptive strain. This study revealed part of the mechanisms of fermentability at high glucose concentrations in C. tropicalis and the results of this study suggest that RLCGT is an effective procedure for improving multistress tolerance.

Abstract
The yeast Spathaspora passalidarum is able to produce ethanol from D-xylose and D-glucose. However, it is not clear how xylose metabolism is affected by D-glucose when both sugars are available in the culture medium. The aims of this work were to evaluate the influence of D-glucose on D-xylose consumption, ethanol production, gene expression, and the activity of key xylose-metabolism enzymes under both aerobic and oxygen-limited conditions. Ethanol yields and productivities were increased in culture media containing D-xylose as the sole carbon source or a mixture of D-xylose and D-glucose. S. passalidarum preferentially consumed D-glucose in the co-fermentations, which is consistent with the reduction in expression of genes encoding the key xylose-metabolism enzymes. In the presence of D-glucose, the specific activities of xylose reductase (XR), xylitol dehydrogenase (XDH), and xylulokinase (XK) were lower. Interestingly, in accordance with other studies, the presence of 2-deoxyglucose (2DG) did not inhibit the growth of S. passalidarum in culture medium containing D-xylose as the sole carbon source. This indicates that a non-canonical repression pathway is acting in S. passalidarum. In conclusion, the results suggest that D-glucose inhibits D-xylose consumption and prevents the D-xylose-mediated induction of the genes encoding XR, XDH, and XK.

Abstract
Potato is a major food crop with enormous biomass straw, but lignocellulose recalcitrance causes a costly bioethanol conversion. Here, we selected the cytochimera (Cyt) potato samples showing significantly-modified lignocellulose and much increased soluble sugars and starch by 2-4 folds in mature straws. Under two pretreatments (8 min liquid hot water; 5% CaO) at minimized conditions, the potato Cyt straw showed complete enzymatic saccharification. Further performing yeast fermentation with all hexoses released from soluble sugars, starch and lignocellulose in the Cyt straw, this study achieved a maximum bioethanol yield of 24 % (% dry matter), being higher than those of other bioenergy crops as previously reported. Hence, this study has proposed a novel mechanism model on the reduction of major lignocellulose recalcitrance and regulation of carbon assimilation to achieve cost-effective bioethanol production under optimal pretreatments. This work also provides a sustainable strategy for utilization of potato straws with minimum waste release.

Abstract
Banana is a major fruit crop throughout the world with abundant lignocellulose in the pseudostem and rachis residues for biofuel production. In this study, we collected a total of 11 pseudostems and rachis samples that were originally derived from different genetic types and ecological locations of banana crops and then examined largely varied edible carbohydrates (soluble sugars, starch) and lignocellulose compositions. By performing chemical (H2SO4, NaOH) and liquid hot water (LHW) pretreatments, we also found a remarkable variation in biomass enzymatic saccharification and bioethanol production among all banana samples examined. Consequently, this study identified a desirable banana (Refen1, subgroup Pisang Awak) crop containing large amounts of edible carbohydrates and completely digestible lignocellulose, which could be combined to achieve the highest bioethanol yields of 31–38% (% dry matter), compared with previously reported ones in other bioenergy crops. Chemical analysis further indicated that the cellulose CrI and lignin G-monomer should be two major recalcitrant factors affecting biomass enzymatic saccharification in banana pseudostems and rachis. Therefore, this study not only examined rich edible carbohydrates for food in the banana pseudostems but also detected digestible lignocellulose for bioethanol production in rachis tissue, providing a strategy applicable for genetic breeding and biomass processing in banana crops.

Abstract
Ethanol is considered as a renewable transport fuels and demand is expected to grow. In this work, trends related to bio-ethanol production are described using Thailand as an example. Developments on high-temperature fermentation and membrane technologies are also explained. This study focuses on the application of membranes in ethanol recovery after fermentation. A preliminary simulation was performed to compare different process configurations to concentrate 10 wt% ethanol to 99.5 wt% using membranes. In addition to the significant energy reduction achieved by replacing azeotropic distillation with membrane dehydration, employing ethanol-selective membranes can further reduce energy demand. Silicalite membrane is a type of membrane showing one of the highest ethanol-selective permeation performances reported today. A silicalite membrane was applied to separate a bio-ethanol solution produced via high-temperature fermentation followed by a single distillation. The influence of contaminants in the bio-ethanol on the membrane properties and required further developments are also discussed.

Abstract
The pulp and paper industry faces an emerging challenge for valorising wastes and side-streams generated according to the biorefinery concept. Eucalyptus globulus bark, an abundant industrial residue in the Portuguese pulp and paper sector, has a high potential to be converted into biobased products instead of being burned. This work aimed to evaluate the ethanol production from E. globulus bark previously submitted to kraft pulping through separate hydrolysis and fermentation (SHF) configuration. Fed-batch enzymatic hydrolysis provided a concentrated hydrolysate with 161.6 g·L−1 of cellulosic sugars. S. cerevisiae and Ethanol Red® strains demonstrated a very good fermentation performance, despite a negligible xylose consumption. S. passalidarum, a yeast known for its capability to consume pentoses, was studied in a simultaneous co-culture with Ethanol Red®. However, bioethanol production was not improved. The best fermentation performance was achieved by Ethanol Red®, which provided a maximum ethanol concentration near 50 g·L−1 and fermentation efficiency of 80%. Concluding, kraft pulp from E. globulus bark showed a high potential to be converted into cellulosic bioethanol, being susceptible to implementing an integrated biorefinery on the pulp and paper industrial plants.

Abstract
During the pretreatment and hydrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass to obtain a hydrolysate rich in fermentable sugars, furaldehydes (furfural and hydroxymethylfurfural), phenolic compounds, and organic acids are formed and released. These compounds inhibit yeast metabolism, reducing fermentation yields and productivity. This study initially confirmed the ability of Spathaspora passalidarum to ferment xylose and demonstrated its sensibility to the inhibitors present in the hemicellulosic sugarcane bagasse hydrolysate. Then, an adaptive laboratory evolution, with progressive increments of hydrolysate concentration, was employed to select a strain more resistant to hydrolysate inhibitors. Afterward, a central composite design was performed to maximize ethanol production using hydrolysate as substrate. At optimized conditions (initial cell concentration of 30 g/L), S. passalidarum was able to produce 19.4 g/L of ethanol with productivity, yield, and xylose consumption rate of 0.8 g/L.h and 0.4 g/g, respectively, in a sugarcane bagasse hemicellulosic hydrolysate. A kinetic model was developed to describe the inhibition of fermentation by substrate and product. The values obtained for substrate saturation and inhibition constant were Ks = 120.4 g/L and Ki = 1293.4 g/L. Ethanol concentration that stops cell growth was 30.1 g/L. There was an agreement between simulated and experimental results, with a residual standard deviation lower than 6%.

Abstract
Pentose sugars are widespread in nature and two of them, D-xylose and L-arabinose belong to the most abundant sugars being the second and third by abundance sugars in dry plant biomass (lignocellulose) and in general on planet. Therefore, it is not surprising that metabolism and bioconversion of these pentoses attract much attention. Several different pathways of D-xylose and L-arabinose catabolism in bacteria and yeasts are known. There are even more common and really ubiquitous though not so abundant pentoses, D-ribose and 2-deoxy-D-ribose, the constituents of all living cells. Thus, ribose metabolism is example of endogenous metabolism whereas metabolism of other pentoses, including xylose and L-arabinose, represents examples of the metabolism of foreign exogenous compounds which normally are not constituents of yeast cells. As a rule, pentose degradation by the wild-type strains of microorganisms does not lead to accumulation of high amounts of valuable substances; however, productive strains have been obtained by random selection and metabolic engineering. There are numerous reviews on xylose and (less) L-arabinose metabolism and conversion to high value substances; however, they mostly are devoted to bacteria or the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This review is devoted to reviewing pentose metabolism and bioconversion mostly in non-conventional yeasts, which naturally metabolize xylose. Pentose metabolism in the recombinant strains of S. cerevisiae is also considered for comparison. The available data on ribose, xylose, L-arabinose transport, metabolism, regulation of these processes, interaction with glucose catabolism and construction of the productive strains of high-value chemicals or pentose (ribose) itself are described. In addition, genome studies of the natural xylose metabolizing yeasts and available tools for their molecular research are reviewed. Metabolism of other pentoses (2-deoxyribose, D-arabinose, lyxose) is briefly reviewed.

Abstract
The yeast Brettanomyces bruxellensis is able to ferment the main sugars used in first-generation ethanol production. However, its employment in this industry is prohibitive because the ethanol productivity reached is significantly lower than the observed for Saccharomyces cerevisiae. On the other hand, a possible application of B. bruxellensis in the second-generation ethanol production has been suggested because this yeast is also able to use d-xylose and l-arabinose, the major pentoses released from lignocellulosic material. Although the latter application seems to be reasonable, it has been poorly explored. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate whether or not different industrial strains of B. bruxellensis are able to ferment d-xylose and l-arabinose, both in aerobiosis and oxygen-limited conditions. Three out of nine tested strains were able to assimilate those sugars. When in aerobiosis, B. bruxellensis cells exclusively used them to support biomass formation, and no ethanol was produced. Moreover, whereas l-arabinose was not consumed under oxygen limitation, d-xylose was only slightly used, which resulted in low ethanol yield and productivity. In conclusion, our results showed that d-xylose and l-arabinose are not efficiently converted to ethanol by B. bruxellensis, most likely due to a redox imbalance in the assimilatory pathways of these sugars. Therefore, despite presenting other industrially relevant traits, the employment of B. bruxellensis in second-generation ethanol production depends on the development of genetic engineering strategies to overcome this metabolic bottleneck.

Abstract
Background Xylose transport is one of the bottlenecks in the conversion of lignocellulosic biomass to ethanol. Xylose consumption by the wild-type strains of xylose-utilizing yeasts occurs once glucose is depleted resulting in a long fermentation process and overall slow and incomplete conversion of sugars liberated from lignocellulosic hydrolysates. Therefore, the engineering of endogenous transporters for the facilitation of glucose-xylose co-consumption is an important prerequisite for efficient ethanol production from lignocellulosic hydrolysates. Results In this study, several engineering approaches formerly used for the low-affinity glucose transporters in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, were successfully applied for earlier identified transporter Hxt1 in Ogataea polymorpha to improve xylose consumption (engineering involved asparagine substitution to alanine at position 358 and replacement of N-terminal lysine residues predicted to be the target of ubiquitination for arginine residues). Moreover, the modified versions of S. cerevisiae Hxt7 and Gal2 transporters also led to improved xylose fermentation when expressed in O. polymorpha. Conclusions The O. polymorpha strains with modified Hxt1 were characterized by simultaneous utilization of both glucose and xylose, in contrast to the wild-type and parental strain with elevated ethanol production from xylose. When the engineered Hxt1 transporter was introduced into constructed earlier advanced ethanol producer form xylose, the resulting strain showed further increase in ethanol accumulation during xylose fermentation. The overexpression of heterologous S. cerevisiae Gal2 had a less profound positive effects on sugars uptake rate, while overexpression of Hxt7 revealed the least impact on sugars consumption.

Abstract
Currently, the fermentation technology for recycling agriculture waste for generation of alternative renewable biofuels is getting more and more attention because of the environmental merits of biofuels for decreasing the rapid rise of greenhouse gas effects compared to petrochemical, keeping in mind the increase of petrol cost and the exhaustion of limited petroleum resources. One of widely used biofuels is bioethanol, and the use of yeasts for commercial fermentation of cellulosic and hemicellulosic agricultural biomasses is one of the growing biotechnological trends for bioethanol production. Effective fermentation and assimilation of xylose, the major pentose sugar element of plant cell walls and the second most abundant carbohydrate, is a bottleneck step towards a robust biofuel production from agricultural waste materials. Hence, several attempts were implemented to engineer the conventional Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast to transport and ferment xylose because naturally it does not use xylose, using genetic materials of Pichia stipitis, the pioneer native xylose fermenting yeast. Recently, the nonconventional yeast Spathaspora passalidarum appeared as a founder member of a new small group of yeasts that, like Pichia stipitis, can utilize and ferment xylose. Therefore, the understanding of the molecular mechanisms regulating the xylose assimilation in such pentose fermenting yeasts will enable us to eliminate the obstacles in the biofuels pipeline, and to develop industrial strains by means of genetic engineering to increase the availability of renewable biofuel products from agricultural biomass. In this review, we will highlight the recent advances in the field of native xylose metabolizing yeasts, with special emphasis on S. passalidarum for improving bioethanol production.

Abstract
Among the so-called non-conventional yeasts, Kluyveromyces marxianus has extremely potent traits that are suitable for industrial applications. Indeed, it has been used for the production of various enzymes, chemicals, and macromolecules in addition to utilization of cell biomass as nutritional materials, feed and probiotics. The yeast is expected to be an efficient ethanol producer with advantages over Saccharomyces cerevisiae in terms of high growth rate, thermotolerance and a wide sugar assimilation spectrum. Results of comprehensive analyses of its genome and transcriptome may accelerate studies for applications of the yeast and may further increase its potential by combination with recent biotechnological tools including the CRISPR/Cas9 system. We thus review published studies by merging with information obtained from comprehensive data including genomic and transcriptomic data, which would be useful for future applications of K. marxianus.

Abstract
Plant biomass is a promising carbon source for producing value-added chemicals, including transportation biofuels, polymer precursors, and various additives. Most engineered microbial hosts and a select group of wild-type species can metabolize mixed sugars including oligosaccharides, hexoses, and pentoses that are hydrolyzed from plant biomass. However, most of these microorganisms consume glucose preferentially to non-glucose sugars through mechanisms generally defined as carbon catabolite repression. The current lack of simultaneous mixed-sugar utilization limits achievable titers, yields, and productivities. Therefore, the development of microbial platforms capable of fermenting mixed sugars simultaneously from biomass hydrolysates is essential for economical industry-scale production, particularly for compounds with marginal profits. This review aims to summarize recent discoveries and breakthroughs in the engineering of yeast cell factories for improved mixed-sugar co-utilization based on various metabolic engineering approaches. Emphasis is placed on enhanced non-glucose utilization, discovery of novel sugar transporters free from glucose repression, native xylose-utilizing microbes, consolidated bioprocessing (CBP), improved cellulase secretion, and creation of microbial consortia for improving mixed-sugar utilization. Perspectives on the future development of biorenewables industry are provided in the end.

Abstract
Xylan and mannan are the two most abundant hemicelluloses, and enzymes that modify these polysaccharides are prominent hemicellulases with immense biotechnological importance. Among these enzymes, xylanases and mannanases which play the vital role in the hydrolysis of xylan and mannan, respectively, attracted a great deal of interest. These hemicellulases have got applications in food, feed, bioethanol, pulp and paper, chemical, and beverage producing industries as well as in biorefineries and environmental biotechnology. The great majority of the enzymes used in these applications are optimally active in mildly acidic to neutral range. However, in recent years, alkaline active enzymes have also become increasingly important. This is mainly due to some benefits of utilizing alkaline active hemicellulases over that of neutral or acid active enzymes. One of the advantages is that the alkaline active enzymes are most suitable to applications that require high pH such as Kraft pulp delignification, detergent formulation, and cotton bioscouring. The other benefit is related to the better solubility of hemicelluloses at high pH. Since the efficiency of enzymatic hydrolysis is often positively correlated to substrate solubility, the hydrolysis of hemicelluloses can be more efficient if performed at high pH. High pH hydrolysis requires the use of alkaline active enzymes. Moreover, alkaline extraction is the most common hemicellulose extraction method, and direct hydrolysis of the alkali-extracted hemicellulose could be of great interest in the valorization of hemicellulose. Direct hydrolysis avoids the time-consuming extensive washing, and neutralization processes required if non-alkaline active enzymes are opted to be used. Furthermore, most alkaline active enzymes are relatively active in a wide range of pH, and at least some of them are significantly or even optimally active in slightly acidic to neutral pH range. Such enzymes can be eligible for non-alkaline applications such as in feed, food, and beverage industries.This chapter largely focuses on the most important alkaline active hemicellulases, endo-β-1,4-xylanases and β-mannanases. It summarizes the relevant catalytic properties, structural features, as well as the real and potential applications of these remarkable hemicellulases in textile, paper and pulp, detergent, feed, food, and prebiotic producing industries. In addition, the chapter depicts the role of these extremozymes in valorization of hemicelluloses to platform chemicals and alike in biorefineries. It also reviews hemicelluloses and discusses their biotechnological importance.
