Systematic review of factors influencing household food waste behaviour: Applying the theory of planned behaviour

Globally, household food waste alone accounts for about $700 billion in environmental costs owing to the resources expended in producing discarded or uneaten food, along with social costs reaching approximately $900 billion. Reducing this waste by 25% could potentially feed 821 million chronically undernourished individuals. This systematic review examines household food waste behaviour using the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB). Comprehensive searches were conducted in PubMed and EMBASE using Elsevier supplemented by additional articles from the reference lists. The procedure followed the PRISMA flowchart. A descriptive analysis was conducted to summarize the characteristics of the 42 included studies from 17 countries. Significantly, 95% of these articles were published between 1 January 2010 and 19 April 2024, in Scimago Q1 ranked journals. The findings demonstrate an intersection of TPB components in explaining household food waste behaviour. This study suggests that a holistic strategy targeting attitudes, subjective norms and perceived behavioural control is essential for effectively reducing household food waste. Additionally, tailored interventions that consider demographic and socioeconomic factors are necessary to address the diverse needs of different populations. The study concludes that public education targeting mindful consumption, effective policies and community initiatives can significantly reduce food waste.

The immediate, intermediate, and long-term effectiveness of audiovisuals for providing pre-treatment information to patients with cancer: A systematic review

OBJECTIVE

To assess the effectiveness of audiovisuals in providing pre-treatment information to patients with cancer. Following the Six Function Model of Medical Communication, we distinguish between immediate, intermediate, and long-term outcomes.

METHODS

A systematic search was performed in five electronic databases for quantitative studies comparing the addition of audiovisuals with standard care or alternative interventions. Quality was assessed using Cochrane's Risk of Bias 2.

RESULTS

After abstract (n = 10,179) and full-text (n = 85) screening, 37 articles were included. Audiovisuals positively impacted patients' anxiety, knowledge, understanding, and physiological responses shortly after the consultation, particularly when video was compared with standard verbal care without audiovisual. Only five studies measured long-term outcomes, leaving the long-term effectiveness of audiovisuals unexplored. Majority of studies showed 'high risk of bias' (n = 34).

CONCLUSION

Although caution is warranted because of the variability in study design and quality, the results suggest potential benefits of using audiovisuals alongside interpersonal communication.

PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS

More high-quality and longitudinal research is needed with emphasis on comparing counseling with and without usage of audiovisual tools. Healthcare providers can improve the short-term impact of information provision by using audiovisuals alongside standard care, but should carefully consider content, for whom, how, and timing.

Balance Interventions to Improve Upright Balance Control and Balance Confidence in People With Motor-Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury or Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

OBJECTIVES

To assist with clinical decision making, evidence syntheses are needed to demonstrate the efficacy of available interventions and examine the intervention components and dosage parameters. This systematic review and meta-analysis described the efficacy, components and dosage of interventions targeting upright balance control, balance confidence, and/or falls in adults with motor-incomplete spinal cord injury/disease (SCI/D).

DATA SOURCES

A search strategy following the population, intervention, control, outcome framework was developed. Six databases were searched: APA PsychInfo, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Embase, Emcare Nursing, Web of Science CC, and Medline.

STUDY SELECTION

Title, abstract, and full-text screening were conducted by 2 researchers independently. Inclusion criteria included the following: (1) adults with chronic, motor-incomplete SCI/D; (2) physical intervention targeting upright postural control; and (3) clinical and/or biomechanical measures of upright balance control and/or balance confidence and/or documentation of falls.

DATA EXTRACTION

Participant characteristics, balance intervention details, adverse events, and study results were extracted. The Downs and Black Checklist was used to assess methodological quality. Meta-analyses on pre-post intervention outcomes and a meta-regression of dosage were completed. Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluations approach was used to evaluate the quality of the evidence.

DATA SYNTHESIS

The search returned 1664 unique studies; 26 were included. Methodological quality was moderate to good. Participants were 500 individuals with SCI/D, aged 18-74 years (males: females = 2.4:1). Minor adverse events were reported in 8 studies (eg, muscle soreness and fatigue). Walking interventions and upright balance training with visual feedback had clinically meaningful and significant pooled effects on improving standing balance control. Only walking interventions had a significant pooled effect on improving balance confidence. There were no significant findings on dosage response. Few studies evaluated the effects of balance interventions on the occurrence of falls.

CONCLUSIONS

Walking interventions and upright balance training with visual feedback had greater effects on upright balance control than conventional physiotherapy; however, the quality of the evidence was very low.

Factors Influencing the Use of Tobacco Among Youth in Low-Income, Lower-Middle-Income, and Upper-Middle-Income Countries: A Systematic Review

BACKGROUND

The use of tobacco is a significant global public health issue. According to the World Health Organization, tobacco use is a considerable risk factor for many diseases and causes more than 8 million deaths per year, with a disproportionate impact on low- and middle-income countries. Therefore, this systematic review was conducted to identify the factors influencing tobacco use among youth in low-income, lower-middle-income, and upper-middle-income countries. Study Design: A system review.

METHODS

The review followed the PRISMA guidelines, and the protocol was registered on PROSPERO (CRD42023430552). Several data sources were utilized, including PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, MEDLINE, CINAHL, and ProQuest, and cross-sectional data from participants aged 15‒24 underwent investigation. Original full-text articles have been published between 2015 and 2023. Out of the 2892 studies, 20 were included in this review after two reviewers confirmed the eligibility criteria.

RESULTS

The average age of the participants was (mean±standard deviation: 19.45±1.686). Most studies were conducted in lower-middle and upper-middle-income countries. Frequently reported influences were at the individual and social levels, including demographic, economic, and psychological parameters, attitude and knowledge, individual behavioral factors, parental education, family member tobacco use, stressful life events, and social networks. At the environmental level, factors included secondhand smoke exposure, community context, media channels, and access to tobacco.

CONCLUSION

The findings demonstrated a significant association between youth tobacco use and individual-, social-, and environmental-level factors. Consequently, specific interventions targeting these factors should be deployed to mitigate youth tobacco use in various socioeconomic settings.

Existing evidence on the use of environmental DNA as an operational method for studying rivers: a systematic map and thematic synthesis

BACKGROUND

Environmental DNA (eDNA) is the DNA that can be extracted from an environmental sample, enabling the monitoring of whole biological communities across a large number of samples, at a potentially lower cost, which can significantly benefit river conservation. A systematic mapping protocol was designed to investigate the use of eDNA in rivers, specifically in terms of research topics, geographic and taxonomic biases, as well as information gaps. Furthermore, the potential research opportunities of eDNA in rivers and possible paths to find this kind of information on available platforms are identified.

METHODS

A published systematic map protocol was applied, consisting of a search for published articles and gray literature in two bibliographic databases and one search engine. All search results were submitted to a 2-stage screening for relevance and pertinence in accordance with pre-defined eligibility criteria. Data extraction and codification regarding country of study, year, taxonomic group, sequencing platform, and type of technique employed resulted in a publicly available database.

RESULTS

From 7372 studies initially obtained by the search, 545 met the inclusion criteria spanning a period from 2003 to 2022. The five countries with most studies are: USA (134), Japan (61), China (54), Brazil (29) and the UK (25). The most used fragments to analyze DNA are 16S and COI, whilst 26S and 23S are the least used. Only 84 (15%) of the studies reported hypervariable regions, among which the most used are V4 and V5. Regarding taxonomic groups, fishes are most often studied (176), followed by bacteria (138) and virus (52), while fungi is the least studied group (3). Concerning data availability, 229 (42%) studies provided access to sequencing data.

CONCLUSIONS

This study presents a comprehensive analysis of the available evidence regarding the implementation of the eDNA methods in rivers. The findings indicate that since the year 2003, this approach has been applied to aquatic lotic systems, and their recent increase can be attributed to the development of Next-Generation-Sequencing technologies and their reduced costs. However, there is a bias towards high-income countries, particularly USA and Europe. Widespread use and applications of this approach at a global level would allow for the generation of a large amount of information that can be compared between countries to understand if responses of aquatic systems follow similar patterns worldwide.

Systematic review search strategies are poorly reported and not reproducible: a cross-sectional metaresearch study

OBJECTIVES

To determine the reproducibility of biomedical systematic review search strategies.

STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING

A cross-sectional reproducibility study was conducted on a random sample of 100 systematic reviews indexed in MEDLINE in November 2021. The primary outcome measure is the percentage of systematic reviews for which all database searches can be reproduced, operationalized as fulfilling six key Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses literature search extension (PRISMA-S) reporting guideline items and having all database searches reproduced within 10% of the number of original results. Key reporting guideline items included database name, multi-database searching, full search strategies, limits and restrictions, date(s) of searches, and total records.

RESULTS

The 100 systematic review articles contained 453 database searches. Only 22 (4.9%) database searches reported all six PRISMA-S items. Forty-seven (10.4%) database searches could be reproduced within 10% of the number of results from the original search; six searches differed by more than 1,000% between the originally reported number of results and the reproduction. Only one systematic review article provided the necessary search details to be fully reproducible.

CONCLUSION

Systematic review search reporting is poor. To correct this will require a multifaceted response from authors, peer reviewers, journal editors, and database providers.

The global prevalence of middle mesial canal in mandibular first and second molars assessed by cone beam computed tomography: A systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

This meta-analysis sought to identify the in vivo prevalence and influencing factors of middle mesial canal (MMC) in mandibular first and second molars based on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans.

METHODS

MEDLINE/PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, SciELO, Google Scholar databases/search engines were searched in period between 15^th and 21^st November 2022, to retrieve the in vivo CBCT-based studies that assessed the prevalence of MMC in mandibular first and/or second molars. The studies were strictly assessed using pre-defined inclusion and exclusion criteria for relevancy and eligibility through screening the title and abstract, and then assessed through reading the full texts using the same criteria. Subsequently, the fulfilled studies were assessed qualitatively using the Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale, and quantitatively using meta-analysis to calculate the pooled prevalence rates of MMC. The publication bias was assessed using funnel plot and Egger's test.

RESULTS

Out of 1,122 studies, 33 studies comprised 13,349 and 7,624 mandibular first and second molars, respectively, were eligible for inclusion. Twenty studies scored high quality, while thirteen scored moderate quality. The global prevalence of MMC in the first molar was 4.4% (95% CI = 0.035-0.053, P<0.001), significantly higher than that of the second molar which was 1.3% (95%, CI = 0.008-0.018, P<0.001). Gender, molar side, and age were not influencing factors of MMC prevalence.

CONCLUSION

The prevalence of MMC is not uncommon, being higher in the mandibular first molar compared to the mandibular second molar. The prevalence of MMC is not influenced by age, molar's side, and gender.

Barriers and facilitators of evidence-based psychotherapies for chronic pain in adults: A systematic review

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) have demonstrated effectiveness for improving outcomes in chronic pain. These evidence-based psychotherapies (EBPs) remain underutilized in clinical practice, however. To identify research gaps and next steps for improving uptake of EBPs, we conducted a systematic review of patient-, provider-, and system-level barriers and facilitators of their use for chronic pain. We searched MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, and CINAHL databases databases from inception through September 2022. Prespecified eligibility criteria included outpatient treatment of adults with chronic pain; examination of barriers and facilitators and/or evaluation of implementation strategies; conducted in the United States (US), United Kingdom (UK), Ireland, Canada or Australia; and publication in English. Two reviewers independently assessed eligibility and rated quality. We conducted a qualitative synthesis of results using a best-fit framework approach building upon domains of the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR). We identified 34 eligible studies (33 moderate or high quality), most (n=28) of which addressed patient-level factors. Shared barriers across EBPs included variable patient buy-in to therapy rationale and competing responsibilities for patients; shared facilitators included positive group or patient-therapist dynamics. Most studies examining ACT and all examining MBSR assessed only group formats. No studies compared barriers, facilitators, or implementation strategies of group CBT to individual CBT, or of telehealth to in-person EBPs. Conceptual mismatches of patient knowledge and beliefs with therapy principles were largely analyzed qualitatively, and studies did not explore how these mismatches were addressed to support engagement. Future research on EBPs for chronic pain in real-world practice settings is needed to explore provider and system-level barriers and facilitators, heterogeneity of effects and uptake, and both effects and uptake of EBPs delivered in various formats, including group vs. individual therapy and telehealth or asynchronous digital approaches. Perspective This systematic review synthesizes evidence on barriers and facilitators to uptake of cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and mindfulness-based stress reduction for chronic pain. Findings can guide future implementation work to increase availability and use of evidence-based psychotherapies for treatment of chronic pain. Registration: PROSPERO number CRD42021252038.
