The impact of serum thyroid-stimulation hormone levels on the outcome of hepatitis B virus related acute-on-chronic liver failure: an observational study

Analysis of Inflammatory and Thyroid Hormone Levels Based on Hepatitis A and B Virus Immunity Status: Age and Sex Stratification

This study investigated the potential associations between hepatitis virus antibody status and thyroid and inflammatory function. The C-reactive protein (CRP), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), and free thyroxine (FT4) levels were measured in individuals with and without antibodies to the hepatitis A virus (HAV) and hepatitis B virus (HBV). Participants were stratified by age, sex, and HAV/HBV antibody status. Participants with and without antibodies to HAV and HBV had normal CRP, TSH, and FT4 levels. However, notable discrepancies were observed in FT4 levels among participants with HAV antibodies and in CRP and FT4 levels among those with both HAV and HBV antibodies, suggesting potential associations between viral immunity and thyroid function, especially in younger participants. Significant variations in thyroid hormone levels were noted when the sample was stratified by sex and HAV and HBV antibody status, indicating that the association between antibody status and thyroid hormone levels varied by sex. This study underscores the need for further research on the effect of viral immunity on inflammatory parameters and thyroid hormone levels.

IFN-γ, IL-17, IL-22+ CD4+ subset in patients with hepatitis C virus and correlation with clinical factor

BACKGROUND

CD4+ T cell responses in HCV infection have a crucial role in the immunopathology of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Our aim was to investigate the frequency of Th1, Th17, and Th22 cells in HCV-infected patients and elucidate their role in the progression of the disease.

METHODS

Twenty-six HCV-infected patients and 26 healthy individuals were recruited. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were stained to separate CD4, IFN-γ, IL-17, and IL-22 producing cells using flow cytometry.

RESULTS

Results showed that the mean expression of IL-22 in CD4+ T cells was significantly lower in HCV-infected patients compared to healthy controls. About correlation with clinical factor and T subsets, a negative correlation between the frequency of CD4+ IFN-γ+ cells and Thyroxine level (T4) was observed in the patients. The data showed a positive link between thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), cholesterol levels, and the frequency of Th17 cells. In addition, a positive correlation was seen between serum creatinine level with both Th1 and Th17. Ultimately, it was found that there was a positive link between viral burden and IL-17+ IL-22+ cells and a negative correlation between viral load and pure Th22.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings indicate that Th22 cells may play a part in the immunopathology of HCV and show the associations between Thelper subsets and the clinical signs of the disease.

Effect of aqueous extract of seed of broccoli on inflammatory cytokines and Helicobacter pylori infection: a randomized, double-blind, controlled trial in patients without atrophic gastritis

The purpose of this study was to investigate the anti-inflammatory effect of an aqueous extract of seed of broccoli (AESB) in Helicobacter pylori (HP)-infected patients without atrophic gastritis. This was a double-centre, randomized, double-blind, controlled study. A total of 110 HP-infected subjects were randomized to receive either AESB or placebo for 2 months. Inflammatory cytokine (IL-8, IFN-γ, TNF-α, CRP, IL-17A, IL-1β, IL-18), pepsinogen I, II (PG I, PG II), and gastrin-17 (G-17) measurements and ¹³C-urea breath tests were performed at baseline and at 60 days. At 60 days, there was no significant difference in any of the inflammatory cytokines, pepsinogen or gastrin between the two groups. However, IL-8, IFN-γ, PG I, PG I/PG II ratio (PGR), and G-17 were reduced by 9.02 pg/mL, 5.08 pg/mL, 24.56 ng/mL, 1.75 and 0.3 pmol/L, respectively, in the AESB group compared with baseline (all P < 0.05). The HP eradication rates in the AESB group and placebo group were 11.11 and 3.70% at 60 days, respectively (P > 0.05). No treatment-related adverse events were reported. Thus, AESB may reduce the risk of gastric mucosal lesions and decrease the risk of gastric cancer by relieving inflammatory cytokines. The safety profile of AESB was satisfactory.
