Comparison and precision of visceral adipose tissue measurement techniques in a multisite longitudinal study using MRI

BACKGROUND

Measurement of visceral adipose tissue (VAT) using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is considered accurate and safe. Single slice measurements perform similar to volumetric measurements for cross-sectional observation studies but may not perform as well for longitudinal studies. This study compared the performance of single slice to volumetric VAT measurements in a prospective longitudinal study. Consistency of results across sites and over time was also evaluated.

METHODS

A total of 935 healthy participants were recruited and scanned with MRI twice, approximately six months apart as part of a randomized, controlled, parallel arm, unblinded study conducted at four clinical centers in the United States. A 3D Dixon MRI sequence was used to image the abdomen, and visceral fat volumes were quantified for the abdomen, reduced coverage volumes (11 and 25 slices), and at single slices positioned at anatomical landmarks. A traveling phantom was scanned twice at all imaging sites.

RESULTS

The correlation of single slice VAT measurement to full abdomen volumetric measurements ranged from 0.78 to 0.93 for cross-sectional observation measurements and 0.30 to 0.55 for longitudinal change. Reduced coverage volumetric measurement outperformed single slice measurements but still showed improved precision with more slices with cross-sectional observation and longitudinal correlations of 0.94 and 0.66 for 11 slices and 0.94 and 0.70 for 25 slices, respectively. No significant differences were observed across sites or over time with the traveling phantom and the volume measurements had a standard deviation of 14.1 mL, 2.6% of the measured volume.

CONCLUSION

Single slice VAT measurements had significantly lower correlation with abdomen VAT volume for longitudinal change than for cross-sectional observation measurements and may not be suitable for longitudinal studies. Data from multiple sites, different scanners, and over time did not show significant differences.

MRI-based quantification of adipose tissue distribution in healthy adult cats during body weight gain

The incidence of obesity in pet population increased over the last decades. Cats have been suggested as model for human obesity because of similar co-morbidities as diabetes and dyslipidaemia. Aim of this study were to quantify the distribution of visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue (VAT, SAT respectively) in healthy adult cats during feeding-induced body weight (BW) gain by MRI, and to correlate it to the increased hepatic fat fraction (HFF). Cats received a commercial dry food ad libitum for 40 weeks and were longitudinally scanned three times. VAT and SAT were determined from Dixon MRI data by a dedicated software solution (ATLAS, established in human and rodents). HFF was quantified from a commercially available sequence. At both individual and group level, normalized adipose tissue volumes significantly increased longitudinally, with median VAT/SAT ratio always < 1. With increased BW, more than proportional increased total adipose tissue was observed together with more than proportional increased HFF. HFF is disproportionately high in overweight cats compared to SAT and VAT accumulation in the 40 weeks observation period. Quantitative unbiased MRI examination of different body fat components is useful in longitudinal monitoring of obesity in cats.

Obesity and Heath-Carter Somatotyping of 3438 Adults in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China by Multivariate Analysis

INTRODUCTION

This study aimed to investigate the somatotype and obesity of adults in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China and to explore multivariate path analysis for the feasibility and scientificity of using somatotypes to evaluate obesity.

SUBJECTS AND METHODS

According to anthropometric methods, a cross-sectional study was performed on 10 indexes of 3438 adults (1690 men and 1748 women, aged > 20 years) living in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China (including Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Xibe, Uzbek, Tatar and Tajik). The Heath-Carter anthropometric method and body mass index (BMI) were used to evaluate somatotype and obesity, respectively. The feasibility and scientificity of using somatotypes to evaluate obesity were analysed by correspondence analysis.

RESULTS

Among the six populations, the somatotypes were mainly distributed as endomorphic mesomorph, mesomorph-endomorph and mesomorphic endomorph populations, accounting for 66.5% of males and 78.8% of females. The obesity rate (27.4% in males, 27.8% in females) of the six populations in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China was much higher than the average Chinese adult obesity rate (12.1%) and the global adult obesity rate (male: 11%, female: 15%). The distribution of BMI was significantly different (male: P=0.000, female: P=0.033) in different populations, and the incidence of overweight and obesity in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China increased gradually. This study found that there were significant differences in somatotype distribution among different obesity groups in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China (P=0.000). There was a strong correlation between overweight or obesity and endomorph-mesomorph, endomorphic mesomorph and mesomorphic endomorph. Furthermore, this study indicated that using somatotypes to evaluate obesity was reliable and scientific.

CONCLUSION

This study concluded that the somatotype of overweight or obese people was mainly related to endomorphic mesomorph, mesomorph-endomorph, and mesomorphic endomorph.
