Abstract
Objective Providing medical care to preterm infants can be rewarding yet also stressful for healthcare providers in the neonatal care unit (NICU). While the impact of provider-parent communication on parent-related stress and satisfaction is widely accepted, little is known about the provider perspective. Therefore, this study explores the relationships between neonatal care providers' communicative competence and their professional quality of life and job satisfaction. Methods Using the NICU Communication Framework, we conducted a cross-sectional survey among N = 300 Dutch pediatricians‑neonatologists, nurses, and ancillary staff. Results Communication performance and providers' job satisfaction were correlated, particularly in terms of perceived quality of care, professional relationships, and personal rewards. When providers deemed communication important and perceived themselves as skilled communicators, job satisfaction increased. Experiencing sufficient time for conversations with parents was inversely correlated with provider fatigue and burn-out. Yet, providers reported insufficient opportunity for communication. Conclusion These results warrant reflection on the importance of communication in neonatal care, for the wellbeing of parents and providers alike. Innovation Focusing on the provider perspective, this study provides novel insights into the relationships between communication and outcomes of care. Our findings uniquely emphasize the power of communication to foster staff satisfaction and reduce burn-out in the NICU.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aims to evaluate the impact of a home-based, post-discharge early intervention (EI) program on reducing parental stress levels in families with preterm infants born between 28+ 0 and 31+ 6 weeks gestational age. METHODS A randomized controlled trial was conducted, with families randomly allocated to either the EI or standard care (SC) group. A term reference group was also recruited for comparison. The Parental Stress Index-Short Form was used to assess parental stress levels, yielding a total stress score and three subdomain scores. Assessment was performed at baseline, at the 60-day mark of the study, and when the infants reached six corrected months of age. Parents in the reference group were assessed only at six months of corrected age for infants. The intervention comprised three sections: intellectual, physical, and social training, which was administered to the infants in the EI group immediately after discharge and to those in the SC group after 60 days of enrollment. RESULTS Seventy-three families were enrolled in this study, with 37 allocated to the EI group, and 36 to the SC group. Prior to intervention, higher stress levels were reported by mothers in both groups than fathers, with no difference observed between the EI and SC groups. Re-assessment performed at 60 days of the study showed that mothers and fathers in the EI group had significantly lower total stress score than those in the SC group (82.00 ± 5.64 vs. 94.26 ± 7.99, p < 0.001; 80.74 ± 7.14 vs. 89.94 ± 9.17, p < 0.001, respectively), which was predominantly due to the lower scores in parental distress and parental-child dysfunction interaction subdomains in the EI group (both had p < 0.001). Mothers in the EI group exhibited a more pronounced reduction in total stress score after intervention when compared to fathers (13.15 ± 4.68 vs. 8.26 ± 4.03, p < 0.001). At six months of infant age, the total stress score and subdomain scores of parents in the EI and SC groups were similar, but significantly higher than those of the reference group. CONCLUSION The home-based, post-discharge EI program demonstrated significant effectiveness in reducing parental stress levels among the parents of very preterm infants. Abstract
Background Prematurity presents a significant life crisis for families, often exceeding their expectations. Fathers of premature infants face the burden of multiple caregiving roles and undergo psychological changes. When confronted with such crises, individuals often engage in self-evaluation and may experience positive transformations. This study aims to employ a qualitative research methodology to explore the experiences of fathers of preterm infants. Materials and methods A phenomenological approach design will be utilized, drawing upon semi-structured in-depth interviews informed by existing literature. Thematic analysis will be employed, adhering to the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research (COREQ) guidelines. In-depth individual interviews, lasting 40-60 minutes, will be conducted with fathers of preterm infants to understand their experiences. The thematic analysis process will facilitate a comprehensive understanding of the factors contributing to post-traumatic growth among these fathers. This methodology provides a structured approach to investigating the experiences and influences on post-traumatic growth in fathers of preterm infants. Results This study will highlight changes in post-traumatic growth among fathers of preterm infants. Discussion Research on the post-traumatic growth (PTG) of fathers of preterm infants is crucial to understanding the unique challenges and psychological transformations they experience. This study aims to explore the factors contributing to PTG in these fathers and how cultural contexts in China influence this process. By elucidating these aspects, the findings can inform targeted interventions and support systems tailored to the needs of fathers of preterm infants. The results may also contribute to developing guidelines and policies to promote psychological well-being and resilience among this population in the healthcare system. Ethics and dissemination This study adheres to the International Ethical Guidelines for Biomedical Research and the Declaration of Helsinki. Approval has been obtained from the People's Hospital of Deyang Human Research Ethics Committee (No: 2019-04-150-K01). The research follows the principles of open science, and the findings will be published while ensuring participants' confidentiality.

Abstract
Objective Early psychosocial interventions for preterm infants and their parents are diverse. This study aimed to structure the knowledge on psychosocial parent-infant interventions and to identify gaps in the intervention studies. Methods We included studies on early (during first year of life) psychosocial parent-infant interventions with parent-infant relationship outcomes after preterm birth (< 37 weeks). We excluded studies that did not focus on preterm infants, failed to indicate the studied intervention and outcomes, were not written in English, were not controlled or peer-reviewed studies, or did not provide essential information for eligibility. The search included studies published between January 2000 and March 2024 in PubMed and PsycINFO. Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were followed in reporting. Psychosocial parent-infant intervention studies were classified adapting the International Classification of Health Interventions (ICHI) and the Template for Intervention Description and Replication (TIDieR). Results The included 22 studies reported data from 18 different interventions with preterm infants (< 37 weeks). Studies excluded preterm infants with health risks (19/22, 86%), with very low gestational age and/or birth weight (7/22, 32%), and/or mothers with psychosocial risks (14/22, 64%). Of the 18 interventions, 12 (67%) were classified as counseling, 3 (17%) as emotional support, 2 (11%) as psychotherapeutic, and 1 (6%) as educational. The parent-child relationship was assessed using 30 different methods and varying time points up to 18 months of age. Most studies (17/22, 77%) reported positive changes in the parent-child relationship favoring the intervention group. Conclusion We identified four types of interventions to influence parenting behavior; the most used was counseling. All four intervention types showed positive effects on parent-infant relationships, although the preterm populations studied were selective, the effects were evaluated using different methods, and the follow-up periods were short. These findings indicate a need for studies with standardized methods, longer follow-up, and less-restricted preterm populations to develop guidelines for all families with preterm infants.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This review aims to assess the effectiveness of eHealth early intervention programs in supporting premature infants and their parents transition from neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) to home and the impact of such programs on parental and infant outcomes. INTRODUCTION The literature has shown the benefits of eHealth early intervention programs to support premature infants and their parents after discharge from NICUs. Parents have reported benefits such as enhanced user-friendliness, increased confidence in infant care, satisfaction, and knowledge acquisition. However, the effectiveness of these programs on parental and infant outcomes remains unclear. INCLUSION CRITERIA This review will consider studies that assess any early intervention program using eHealth to support premature infants and their parents after discharge from NICU. The programs may be initiated during hospitalization or within the first month of discharge. The programs will include interventions that use eHealth components (eg, teleconsultation), either alone or in combination with face-to-face interventions (eg, home visits). This review will consider parental outcomes, including stress, anxiety, competence, and satisfaction, as well as infant outcomes, including health service utilization and cognitive, motor, and social development. METHODS This review will follow the JBI methodology for systematic reviews of effectiveness. The search strategy will aim to find both published and unpublished quantitative studies in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, without any geographical or cultural limitations. Two reviewers will independently perform study selection, critical appraisal, and data extraction. The results will be accompanied by a narrative synthesis. If possible, a meta-analysis will be conducted and the Summary of Findings will be presented using the GRADE (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation) approach. Abstract
Objective: To systematically review studies examining the effects of home-visiting preventive parenting programs (HV-PPs) on improving the quality of mother-child interactions in early childhood. Method: Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses protocol, we identified 3,586 studies published between 2018 and 2022 by searching the following databases: PubMed, Web of Science, BVS/LILACS, SciELO, and PsycNET/PsycINFO. After applying the eligibility criteria, 17 articles were selected for review. Results: Most studies were conducted in high-income countries (53%) and the remainder were conducted in upper-middle-income countries, predominantly using a randomized controlled trial design and with strong methodological quality. The 17 studies applied 13 different HV-PPs, predominantly using video feedback, based on various dosages and schedules. Most studies (77%) showed significant positive effects on mother-child interactions by improving mainly positive maternal behaviors (e.g., sensitivity and responsiveness). Positive effects occurred independent of the study design, sample characteristics, measures, and constructs assessed. However, the findings suggest that the combination of fewer than six sessions, durations shorter than three months, and a very early start did not impact mother-child interactions, as expected. Few studies have explored negative maternal behaviors, children's behaviors, and dyadic interactions such as mutuality and synchrony. Conclusions: HV-PPs positively impacted mother-child interactions in early childhood despite the large heterogeneity across program designs, outcome measures, and overlapping constructs. Based on the results, we discuss the practical and economic implications of using parenting programs as a preventive approach.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study aimed to evaluate how Close Collaboration with Parents (CC), a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU)-wide educational model for healthcare staff to improve their family-centred care practices, affects the length of stay (LOS), growth, and later hospital visits and rehospitalizations of preterm infants. METHODS This register-based study included all preterm infants born below 35 weeks of gestation in Finland from 2006 to 2020. Eligible infants were classified into the Full Close Collaboration (Full-CC) group (n = 2,104) if the NICUs of both the delivery and discharge hospitals had implemented the intervention; into the Partial-CC group (n = 515) if only one of the NICUs had implemented the intervention; and into the control group (n = 11,621) if neither had implemented the intervention. RESULTS The adjusted LOS, the primary outcome, was 1.8 days or 6% shorter in the Full-CC group than in the control group (geometric mean ratio 0.94, 95% confidence interval [95% CI] 0.89-1.00). Growth was better in the Full-CC group compared to the control group: adjusted group difference 11.7 g/week (95% CI, 1.4-22.0) for weight, 1.3 mm/week (95% CI, 0.6-2.0) for length. The Full-CC group infants had lower odds of having any unscheduled outpatient visits compared to the control group (adjusted odds ratio 0.81; 95% CI, 0.67-0.98). No significant differences were found in any other comparisons. DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION The unit-wide intervention improving family-centred care practices in NICUs may lead to more efficient use of hospital resources by shortening the LOS, improving growth, and decreasing hospital visits of preterm infants.

BACKGROUND Parents of preterm infants are often thrown unexpectedly into the care of their vulnerable infant, causing them to be stressed and overwhelmed. Social support has been previously highlighted as a crucial factor in helping parents cope with stress. Several psychosocial interventions have thus been developed to support parents of preterm babies, which warrant further investigations. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the effectiveness of psychosocial interventions in reducing stress (primary outcome), anxiety, depression, pediatric medical traumatic stress (PMTS) and increasing social support among parents with preterm infants. METHODS A systematic-review and meta-analysis were conducted. Eight electronic databases were searched for relevant studies from their respective inception dates till September 2023. Meta-analysis was performed with RevMan, using the random-effects model. Heterogeneity was investigated using Cochran Q and I2 tests, and publication bias was assessed using funnel plots. Subgroup analyses were conducted for follow-up measurement, gender of parent, type of intervention provider, and setting. FINDINGS Eighteen studies were included in this review, and all studies were meta-analysed. Participants who received psychosocial interventions reported significantly lower stress and depression in comparison to control group participants. Psychosocial interventions delivered by psychologists and trained researchers were more effective compared to the nurses. The GRADE assessment indicated that the certainty of evidence for all outcomes were very low. CONCLUSION Psychosocial interventions effectively reduce stress and depression levels in parents with preterm infants. Our findings encourage the implementation of psychosocial interventions to improve parental psychological wellbeing. Future higher quality trials are needed to measure psychological outcomes among parents, especially fathers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Parenting of preterm infants presents unique challenges, particularly during their transition from hospital to home. Early discharge programs can assist parents during this critical period. However, the feasibility of delivering a family-focused online discharge program remains understudied. OBJECTIVES This study was conducted to investigate the impact of a family-focused online parenting support intervention on parents' sense of competence, depression, caregiving, social support, family functioning, and the weight and length of preterm infants. METHODS We conducted a single-blind, two-arm randomized controlled trial with a repeated-measures design. Participants were recruited from a specialized tertiary hospital in China between May and December 2022. Forty-five families were randomly assigned to the intervention group and 44 to the control group. The intervention included three components: (1) two one-hour group sessions and three 30-minute individual sessions of online parenting support; (2) two follow-up telephone calls (15-30 min each) post-discharge; and (3) access to online parenting resources. Primary outcomes included parenting sense of competence, parental care ability, and preterm infants' weight and length. Secondary outcomes included depression, social support, and family functioning. Measurements were taken at baseline, preterm infant discharge, one month post-discharge, and three months post-discharge. A generalized estimating equation model was employed based on the intention-to-treat principle for outcome comparison. RESULTS Parents in the intervention group showed significant improvements in parenting sense of competence (P < 0.001), parental care ability (P < 0.001), depression (P < 0.001), and social support (P = 0.002). However, no statistically significant differences were observed in preterm infants' weight and length, or in family functioning (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Although the intervention did not affect preterm infants' outcomes, the positive enhancements in parenting sense of competence, care ability, depression, and social support indicate that online family-focused parenting support can effectively prepare parents for hospital discharge and the early transition period.

Abstract
While participating in the care for a baby in a neonatal intensive care unit, parents experience a transition in which they adapt to changes and reconstruct their roles and identities. However, there is no clear explanation for this concept of transition. The purpose of this study was to clarify this concept using Rodgers' evolutionary approach. The identified attributes of the concept were a process of learning, repeated undulating emotions, balancing a caring relationship with nurses, and embracing new roles and responsibilities. The findings can provide a knowledge base for future research aimed at enhancing nurses' understanding of transition and promoting parental participation.

Abstract
Neonatal sepsis causes significant global morbidity and mortality, with the highest burden in resource-limited settings where 99% of neonatal deaths occur. There are multiple challenges to achieving successful treatment of neonates in this setting. Firstly, reliable and low-cost strategies for risk identification are urgently needed to facilitate treatment as early as possible. Improved laboratory capacity to allow identification of causative organisms would support antimicrobial stewardship. Antibiotic treatment is still hampered by availability, but also increasingly by antimicrobial resistance - making surveillance of organisms and judicious antibiotic use a priority. Finally, supportive care is key in the management of the neonate with sepsis and has been underrecognized as a priority in resource-limited settings. This includes fluid balance and nutritional support in the acute phase, and follow-up care in order to mitigate complications and optimise long-term outcomes. There is much more work to be done in identifying the holistic needs of neonates and their families to provide effective family-integrated interventions and complete the package of neonatal sepsis management in resource-limited settings.

Abstract
AIM To assess the efficacy of post-hospital psychomotor therapy in the development of very preterm infants at nine and 24 months. METHODS We conducted a randomised controlled study at Toulouse Children's Hospital between 2008 and 2014 among preterm infants aged under 30 weeks. All infants in both groups could benefitt from physiotherapy to prevent motor disorders. The intervention group received 20 early post-hospital psychomotor therapy sessions. The development was assessed by the Bayley Scale Infant Development at nine and 24 months. RESULTS The intervention and control group contained 77 and 84 infants, respectively, with 57 infants in each group undergoing assessment at 24 months. Boys accounted for 56% of the population. Median gestational age was 28 weeks, range 25-29. The development scores at 24 months did not significantly differ between the randomisation groups. At 9 months, we observed improvements in global motricity (mean difference 0.9 point, p = 0.04) and fine motricity for the subgroup containing educationally underserved mothers (mean difference 1.6 point, p = 0.008). There was no significant difference in neuromotor functioning between the two groups. CONCLUSION The benefits of psychomotor therapy were short-lived and did not persist post-intervention. Our results and this organisational model encouraged us to persevere towards similar multi-professional care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In Malaysia approximately 7% of births result in a preterm birth (< 37 weeks). Research in many other countries has found that mothers of preterm infants experience poorer psychological wellbeing. However, there has been limited research in Malaysia. We examined wellbeing, using the WHO Quality of Life brief version questionnaire (WHOQOL-BREF), in mothers who have preterm and full-term infants. METHODS Data was collected as part of the South East Asian Community Observatory MISS-P project. A total of 3221 mothers (7.9% with a preterm and 92.1 with a full-term birth) completed a survey, with a range of measures, including the WHOQoL-BREF and sociodemographic questions. RESULTS For the physical health, psychological wellbeing and quality of their environment WHOQOL-BREF domains, a lower gestational age, a lower education level, and having had an emergency caesarean delivery were significantly associated (p < 0.05) with a lower quality of life, and there was a weak effect for ethnicity for some domains. The effects were strongest for mothers' education level. CONCLUSIONS There is a weak but significant relationship between the gestational age of an infant and the mother's quality of life. Mothers in Malaysia with a preterm infant or a lower level of education may benefit from additional support.

Abstract
Neurodevelopmental challenges in children born very preterm are common and not improving. This study tested the feasibility of using Evidence-based Practice to Improve Quality (EPIQ), a proven quality improvement technique that incorporates scientific evidence to target improving language abilities in very preterm populations in 10 Canadian neonatal follow-up programs. Feasibility was defined as at least 70% of sites completing four intervention cycles and 75% of cycles meeting targeted aims. Systematic reviews were reviewed and performed, an online quality improvement educational tool was developed, multidisciplinary teams that included parents were created and trained, and sites provided virtual support to implement and audit locally at least four intervention cycles of approximately 6 months in duration. Eight of ten sites implemented at least four intervention cycles. Of the 48 cycles completed, audits showed 41 (85%) met their aim. Though COVID-19 was a barrier, parent involvement, champions, and institutional support facilitated success. EPIQ is a feasible quality improvement methodology to implement family-integrated evidence-informed interventions to support language interventions in neonatal follow-up programs. Further studies are required to identify potential benefits of service outcomes, patients, and families and to evaluate sustainability.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Parental presence in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) has been demonstrated to enhance infant growth and development, reduce parental anxiety and stress and strengthen parent-infant bonding. Since eHealth technology emerged, research on its utilisation in NICUs has risen substantially. There is some evidence that incorporating such technologies in the NICU can reduce parental stress and enhance parent confidence in caring for their infant.Several countries, including China, restrict parental attendance in NICUs, citing infection control challenges, issues of privacy and confidentiality and perceived additional workload for healthcare professionals. Due to COVID-19 pandemic-related shortages of personal protective equipment and uncertain mode of transmission, many NICUs around the world closed to parental visiting and engagement in neonatal care.There is anecdotal evidence that, given pandemic-related restrictions, eHealth technologies, have increasingly been used in NICUs as a potential substitute for in-person parental presence.However, the constraints and enablers of technologies in these situations have not been exhaustively examined. This scoping review aims to update the literature on eHealth technology utilisation in the NICU and to explore the literature on the challenges and facilitators of eHealth technology implementation to inform future research. METHODS AND ANALYSIS The five-stage Arksey and O'Malley methodological framework and the Joanna Briggs Institute scoping review methodology will serve as the foundation for this scoping review. Eight databases will be searched for the relevant literature published between January 2000 and August 2022 in either English or Chinese. Grey literature will be manually searched. Data extraction and eligibility screening will be carried out by two impartial reviewers. There will be periods of both quantitative and qualitative analysis. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION Since all data and information will be taken from publicly accessible literature, ethical approval would not be necessary. A peer-reviewed publication will be published with the results of this scoping review. Abstract
PURPOSE The Following Baby Back Home (FBBH) visiting program, which is provided by nurse and social worker teams, supports families of low-birthweight preterm infants after discharge from a neonatal intensive care unit. Enrollment in the FBBH program has been documented to reduce the likelihood of infant death. In this study, we conducted a cost-benefit analysis of the FBBH program. DESIGN AND METHODS Infants enrolled in the FBBH program (N = 416) were identified through administrative records. Infants in the FBBH program were propensity score matched with comparison infants to estimate the difference in healthcare costs in the first year of life. RESULTS Infants enrolled in the FBBH program incurred similar medical care costs compared to a comparison group. Avoided deaths, program costs, healthcare costs resulted in net economic benefits of the FBBH program to avoid infant death estimate at $83,020, cost per life saved at $3080, and benefit-to-cost ratio at 27.95. CONCLUSIONS The FBBH program's net economic benefits from avoided deaths suggest a substantial return on investment of resources, yielding benefits in excess of program and healthcare costs. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS It is economically beneficial to provide home visiting services to families of low-birthweight babies by a team comprised of a registered nurse and social worker.

Abstract
AIMS/OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to appraise health professionals' self-reported practices in educating parents of hospitalised newborns from the perspective of competency-based education and to identify areas for improvement of parental learning. BACKGROUND Patient education is essential to achieve autonomy in parents of hospitalised newborns. The literature provides descriptions of the use of various components of competency-based education in patient education. This suggests that competency-based education is a valuable concept for patient education. DESIGN A case-based qualitative study. METHODS Three focus group discussions were conducted and 28 semi-structured interviews with 45 health professionals who practice in a hospital setting that is designed to empower parents. The data were analysed with a framework analysis approach, using a framework of competency-based education themes for a combined inductive and deductive content data analysis. The recommendations of the Standards for Reporting Qualitative Research checklist were followed. FINDINGS Two themes of competency-based education emerged as evidently operationalised: (1) 'Learning climate' and (2) 'Role modeling'. Five themes emerged as incompletely operationalised: (1) 'Parent curriculum based on inter-professional consensus'; (2) 'Transparency about the competencies needed'; (3) 'Access to teaching'; (4) 'Assessing and reporting results'; and (5) 'Proficiency statements based on autonomy expectations'. Two themes did not emerge: (1) 'Empowering parents to be active learners' and (2) 'Evaluation and improvement of the education program'. CONCLUSIONS Parent education is at risk of being merely on a master-apprentice model and may be more effective if it is designed on competency-based education principles. Identified areas for improvement are empowering parents to be 'active learners' and by involving them in the evaluation and improvement of the educational program. Parent education in neonatal health care may benefit from an appraisal based on competency-based education themes. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE Appraising parent education based on competency-based education principles is feasible for improving the learning process towards parent autonomy.

Abstract
The aim of this review was to map the literature assessing associations between maternal or infant immune or gut microbiome biomarkers and child neurodevelopmental outcomes within the first 5 years of life. We conducted a PRISMA-ScR compliant review of peer-reviewed, English-language journal articles. Studies reporting gut microbiome or immune system biomarkers and child neurodevelopmental outcomes prior to 5 years were eligible. Sixty-nine of 23,495 retrieved studies were included. Of these, 18 reported on the maternal immune system, 40 on the infant immune system, and 13 on the infant gut microbiome. No studies examined the maternal microbiome, and only one study examined biomarkers from both the immune system and the gut microbiome. Additionally, only one study included both maternal and infant biomarkers. Neurodevelopmental outcomes were assessed from 6 days to 5 years. Associations between biomarkers and neurodevelopmental outcomes were largely nonsignificant and small in effect size. While the immune system and gut microbiome are thought to have interactive impacts on the developing brain, there remains a paucity of published studies that report biomarkers from both systems and associations with child development outcomes. Heterogeneity of research designs and methodologies may also contribute to inconsistent findings. Future studies should integrate data across biological systems to generate novel insights into the biological underpinnings of early development.

Abstract
Infants born preterm or with complicated medical conditions requiring care in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) are at high risk for long-term developmental disabilities. The transition from NICU to early intervention/outpatient settings results in a disruptive gap in a therapeutic intervention during a period of maximal neuroplasticity and development. This meta-review evaluated evidence from existing systematic reviews regarding therapeutic interventions that start in the NICU and continue at home with the goal of improving developmental outcomes for infants at high risk for cerebral palsy. We also evaluated the impact of these interventions on parents' mental health outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Black infants in the United States have the highest incidence of both infant mortality (IM) and preterm birth among all racial/ethnic groups. The IM disparity for Black preterm infants often occurs after neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) discharge, when parents become the primary caregivers. The revised Kenner Transition Model (KTM) is situation specific and comprised 5 interrelated domains of parental need after NICU discharge that have not been previously applied to the transition from NICU to home of Black infants. PURPOSE This study's purpose was to explore the conceptual fit of parental readiness to care for their Black preterm infants after NICU discharge with the revised KTM. METHODS A qualitative descriptive research approach was used for this single-site study of NICU parents of Black preterm infants. Qualitative analysis of 10 parents' perceptions before NICU discharge was via semantic content analysis; data were organized into categories aligned with the KTM. The Transition Questionnaire (TQ), an adjunct to the KTM, provided self- report quantitative data. RESULTS All parents endorsed the "Information Needs," "Stress and Coping," and "Professional Support" domains of the KTM. Parent TQ responses indicated perceptions of moderate to high levels of home transition readiness after NICU discharge. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE AND RESEARCH The domains of the revised KTM were affirmed by parents of Black preterm infants in this study via coded interview and TQ responses. Additional study exploring the clinical assessment of transition readiness with theoretical grounding in diverse NICU families is warranted. Abstract
PROBLEM Preterm birth is a stressful event. Paternal experiences of having a preterm infant indicate a need for tailored support. However, it is unclear which interventions work best. This review presents the evidence on existing healthcare interventions to support fathers of preterm infants in early parenthood, how effective they are and paternal experiences with the interventions. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA The integrative review process of Whittemore and Knafl was used to guide the study. A structured and comprehensive literature search was conducted in PubMed (MEDLINE), Embase, CINAHL, PsycInfo, Cochrane, Scopus, Web of Science, SweMed+, and Proquest Dissertation & Thesis Global. SAMPLE A total of 18 qualitative and quantitative studies were included in the review. The Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool was used to assess quality. RESULTS Three overall themes were identified in the analysis: 1) Skin-to-skin contact supported interaction between infant and father, 2) information impacted paternal experiences of stress, anxiety, and development of fatherhood, 3) fathers' relationships with the nurses oscillated between conflict and assistance. CONCLUSIONS Our findings show that targeted interventions could support father-infant interaction and reduce stress among fathers of preterm infants. IMPLICATIONS Fathers of preterm infants rely on nurses to support their engagement in early parenthood, while nurses facilitate the interventions that engage the fathers. It is also essential to develop a culture within the neonatal intensive care unit that encourages the presence of fathers and enhances educational nursing strategies for supporting fathers of preterm infants during early parenthood.

Abstract
This paper discusses possibilities for early detection and early intervention in infants with or at increased risk of neurodevelopmental disorders in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The brain's high rate of developmental activity in the early years post-term challenges early detection. It also offers opportunities for early intervention and facilitation of school readiness. The paper proposes that in the first year post-term two early detection options are feasible for LMICs: (a) caregiver screening questionnaires that carry little costs but predict neurodevelopmental disorders only moderately well; (b) the Hammersmith Infant Neurological Examination and Standardized Infant NeuroDevelopmental Assessment (SINDA) which are easy tools that predict neurodisability well but require assessment by health professionals. The young brain's neuroplasticity offers great opportunities for early intervention. Ample evidence indicates that families play a critical role in early intervention of infants at increased risk of neurodevelopmental disorders. Other interventional key elements are responsive parenting and stimulation of infant development. The intervention's composition and delivery mode depend on the infant's risk profile. For instance, in infants with moderately increased risk (e.g., preterm infants) lay community health workers may provide major parts of intervention, whereas in children with neurodisability (e.g., cerebral palsy) health professionals play a larger role.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The authors of this study evaluated infant and parent outcomes at 12 and 24 months after a clinician-supported, web-based early intervention for preterm infants. OBJECTIVE To examine the efficacy of a clinician-supported, web-based intervention delivered over the first year after birth compared with standard care in children born after <34 weeks' gestation, on child development at 24 months corrected age (CA), parental mental health, and the parent-child relationship at 24 months. METHODS We randomly allocated 103 preterm infants to clinician-supported, web-based intervention (n = 50) or standard care control (n = 53) groups. At 24 months CA, child cognitive, language, motor, social-emotional development, and the parent-child relationship were assessed. Parental mental health and quality of life were assessed at 12 and 24 months CA. RESULTS At 24 months, child development, maternal mental health, and maternal quality of life were similar for the intervention and control groups. There was some evidence that mothers in the intervention group had lower odds of being in the elevated category for depression at 12 months (odds ratio: 0.19; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.04-0.90; P = .04). Scores were higher in the intervention group for child responsiveness (mean difference: 0.57; 95% CI: 0.03-1.11; P = .04), child involvement (mean difference: 0.61; 95% CI: 0.09-1.13; P = .02), and maternal structuring (mean difference: 0.72; 95% CI: 0.22-1.21; P = .01) during the parent-infant interaction at 24 months. CONCLUSIONS This study provides preliminary evidence that a clinician-supported, web-based early intervention program for preterm infants had a positive effect on the parent-child relationship and maternal mental health immediately after the intervention but potentially little effect on child development.

Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study was to explore mothers’ perceived level of stress one month after hospital discharge following the birth of singleton and multiple preterm infants. Design: A cross-sectional design was used to compare mother’s perceived stress in two groups of postpartum mothers and the relationship of the theoretical antecedents and these variables. Setting: A neonatal intensive care unit in a medical center in Taiwan. Participants: Mothers of 52 singletons and 38 multiple premature infants were recruited. One month after the infant was discharged, the participants completed a self-reported questionnaire that included demographic data about the mother and infant, the 21-item Social Support Scale, and the 15-item Perceived Stress Scale. This was returned by email or completed at the outpatient unit. Analysis: Descriptive and inferential analysis. Results: The mean social support scores were 76.6 and 76.5 (out of 105) for mothers with singleton and multiple birth infants, respectively. The most important supporter was the husband. The mean perceived stress scores of 25.8 and 31.0 for mothers with singleton and multiple birth infants, respectively, were significantly different (p = 0.02). Sleep deprivation and social support were predictive indicators of perceived stress in mothers with preterm infants. Conclusions: We suggest that the differences in stress and needs of mothers with singleton and multiple births should be recognized and addressed in clinics. The findings of this study serve as a reference for promoting better preterm infant care.

Abstract
Against the backdrop of a global pandemic, the Society for Reproductive Biology (SRB) 2021 meeting reunited the Australian and New Zealand reproductive research community for the first time since 2019 and was the first virtual SRB meeting. Despite the recent global research disruptions, the conference revealed significant advancements in reproductive research, the importance of which span human health, agriculture, and conservation. A core theme was novel technologies, including the use of medical microrobots for therapeutic and sperm delivery, diagnostic hyperspectral imaging, and hydrogel condoms with potential beyond contraception. The importance of challenging the contraceptive status quo was further highlighted with innovations in gene therapies, non-hormonal female contraceptives, epigenetic semen analysis, and in applying evolutionary theory to suppress pest population reproduction. How best to support pregnancies, particularly in the context of global trends of increasing maternal age, was also discussed, with several promising therapies for improved outcomes in assisted reproductive technology, pre-eclampsia, and pre-term birth prevention. The unique insights gained via non-model species was another key focus and presented research emphasised the importance of studying diverse systems to understand fundamental aspects of reproductive biology and evolution. Finally, the meeting highlighted how to effectively translate reproductive research into policy and industry practice.

Abstract
Background: The early developmental interventions might be designed with a preventative approach to improving the development of at-risk preterm infants. The present study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an early physiotherapy intervention on preterm infants’ motor and global development, and on parents’ stress index. Methods: 48 infants were enrolled and randomized into two groups. Infants allocated to the intervention group received an early physiotherapy intervention, based on parental education sessions and tactile and kinesthetic stimulation during the NICU period, as well as a home-based activity program. The intervention commenced after 32 weeks post-menstrual age and ended at 2 months corrected age. Infants allocated to the control group received the usual care based on the NIDCAP-care. Results: No differences were found between groups on the Alberta Infant Motor Scale at 2- or 8-months corrected age. Infants in the intervention group showed more optimal fine motor, problem-solving, personal-social, and communication development at 1 month corrected age. Conclusions: The results showed no effect on the early physiotherapy intervention. Results might be related to the dose or intensity of the intervention, but also to the poor parental compliance. Abstract
Background In The Netherlands, prematurely born infants and their parents are offered regular developmental check-ups in a hospital setting. In line with providing healthcare at distance, the use of video footage showing the infant’s behavior and movements, taken by parents at home and assessed by professionals online, might be a fruitful future practice. The focus of this study was to gain insight into parental experiences with the Alberta Infant Motor Scale home-video method and their appraisal of its applicability for use in an outpatient neonatal follow-up clinic. Method A qualitative descriptive study among parents of healthy extremely or very premature infants (GA 26.2–31.5 weeks) participating in a longitudinal study of motor development between 3–18 months corrected age. Ten semi-structured interviews were conducted and transcribed verbatim. Data was analyzed independently. Inductive content analysis was performed following the process of the AIMS home-video method. Results Parents appraised the AIMS home-video method as manageable and fun to do. Instructions, instruction film, and checklists were clear. Transferring the video footage from their phone to their computer and uploading it to the web portal was sometimes time-consuming. Parents gained a better awareness of their infant’s motor development and found the provided feedback a confirmation of what they already thought about their infant’s development and was reassuring that their child was doing well. First-time parents seemed more uncertain and had a greater need for information about (motor) development, but on the other hand, also had confidence in their child. All parents thought that home-videos can be an addition to follow-up visits, but cannot replace (all) visits. It may be an opportunity to reduce the frequency of hospital visits, while still having their infant monitored. Conclusion Parents appraised the AIMS home-video method positively and are of the opinion that home-videos can be of added value in monitoring infants at risk in neonatal follow-up additional to hospital visits. In future research a user-friendly application and/or platform to exchange video footage safely between parents and professionals should be developed with all possible stakeholders involved and implementation should be explored. Abstract
Introducción: El nacimiento, la hospitalización, la transición al hogar y el cuidado de un hijo prematuro son eventos críticos para los padres Materiales y Métodos: Se llevó a cabo un estudio cualitativo descriptivo. Se realizaron entrevistas semiestructuradas entre marzo y octubre de 2020 a 4 padres y 12 madres que tuvieron la experiencia de tener un hijo prematuro. El análisis se realizó con herramientas de la teoría fundamentada. Resultados: Se identificaron cuatro categorías: Afrontando el parto prematuro, experimentando la cotidianidad de la prematurez en la unidad neonatal, empoderándose para el cuidado del hijo prematuro y cuidando en el hogar. La categoría empoderándose para el cuidado del hijo prematuro, emergió como la categoría central dentro de la experiencia. Discusión: La experiencia de tener de un hijo prematuro es compleja, dinámica e implica una alta carga emocional para los padres. El cuidado del hijo prematuro exige el desarrollo de habilidades especificas antes del alta y en este proceso el empoderamiento se constituye como aspecto central. El empoderamiento de los padres facilita la transición y se ve favorecido por el acompañamiento del personal de enfermería, la información, la vinculación con el cuidado de su hijo en la unidad neonatal, el apoyo familiar y las condiciones individuales de cada padre. Conclusiones: En la experiencia de los padres el empoderamiento para el cuidado de sus hijos prematuros se constituye como un elemento central que facilita la transición al hogar y favorece el desarrollo de habilidades para el cuidado en el hogar.

Abstract
There has been a historic lack of psychosocially geared treatment studies for congenital and neonatal conditions that impact brain development, despite well-established knowledge that these conditions impact cognitive development, quality of life (QoL), mental health, and academic success. OBJECTIVE The aim of the present study was to systematically investigate the research literature focusing on the effects of interventions in psychosocially geared programs for children with neonatal brain injury on school and psychological outcomes. METHODS Psychosocially geared programs broadly refer to interventions to improve parenting and school functioning, or child behavior, as well as other interventions that have a psychological component but may be more physically oriented, such as goal-directed physiotherapy. A comprehensive search of PubMed, Medline, PsychINFO, and Embase was completed between June and July 2020. The methodological quality of included articles was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool for Randomized Trials (RoB-2). RESULTS AND CONCLUSION Twenty studies met the inclusion criteria and demonstrated adequate risk of bias (i.e., low risk of bias or some concerns). The studies included family (n = 2), parenting (n = 7), and child (n = 10) interventions. There is some evidence supporting the effectiveness of psychosocial interventions for children with neonatal brain injury and their families on academic outcomes, behavior, and QoL, indicated by positive intervention effects in 65% (n = 13) of studies.

Abstract
As a child is born, so are the parents with new roles assumed. Attachment is secured, and parents quickly become the experts in their child. With preterm birth, however, this quiet and essential period of discovery is interrupted. It is described as a traumatic and stressful experience. Programs that aim to address this focus on education and support. This qualitative study explores the effect on parents and staff of a novel and simple intervention of parents walking their baby in a stroller (Supportive Therapeutic Excursion Program, STEP). This study used a qualitative methodology that included 20 semi-structured interviews for content saturation to explore the experiences of parents and staff participating in the STEP program. We found an overall positive experience reported by both parents and nursing staff with STEP. Analysis revealed that as autonomy is fostered with parent education around transition to home, STEP brought a normalcy that was reported to bolster participating parents’ self-efficacy and connectedness, two important elements for recovery from stressful situations. The potential impact of STEP can be far reaching because, although future research is needed, these data suggest that inexpensive programs that promote normalcy may enable self-efficacy and connectedness prior to hospital discharge.

Abstract
Black infants have twice the incidence of infant mortality (IM), death before the first birthday, and preterm birth in comparison to other US racial/ethnic groups; these factors make Black infants a high-risk group. The literature on the factors impacting caregivers and home environments for these infants is sparse. The purpose of this descriptive qualitative study was to explore perceived parental readiness to care for their Black preterm infants at home after discharge from a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Ten NICU parents of Black preterm infants completed a structured interview and self-report questionnaires before hospital discharge; data were analyzed using descriptive and semantic content methods. Coded parent responses were categorized as Parent Protector of Infants' Health (n = 94, 29.2%); Hindrances to Parental Readiness for Transition to Home (n = 97, 30.1%), and Parent as Partner in NICU to Home Transition (n = 131, 40.6%). All parents rated themselves "confident" (n = 6) or "very confident" (n = 4) in their ability to care for their infant after NICU discharge. Partnership with the healthcare team was described as involving health information resources, effective communication, and, most importantly, support for the parental role as infant protector for transition to home for their high-risk infant after NICU discharge.

The Tromsø Intervention Study on Preterms (TISP) randomized 146 preterm born children (<2000 g) either to the Mother-Infant Transaction Program-Modified (MITP-M, n = 72) or to a preterm control group (n = 74). In addition, 75 full-term babies were followed up until 9 years of age. TISP was conducted at the University Hospital Northern Norway (UNN) and only infants who did not have congenital anomalies and families where the mothers’ native language was Norwegian were included. The study investigates the effect of MITP-M on cognitive and social development including behavioral problems, quality of life and stress in the family. The results have so far been published in various journals. The aim of this article is to give a comprehensive overall presentation of the main findings and discuss implications for clinical practice and further research. Parents in the intervention group were superior in “reading” their infants’ temperament, and at 3, 5 and 7 years of age the intervention group scored significantly higher on well-known tests of cognitive outcome. At 9 years of age, the intervention group had fewer attentional problems, better school achievements and a better quality of life. From the first year onwards, mothers and fathers in the intervention group reported lower levels of stress than parents of in the preterm control group.

Abstract
Preterm infants are at increased risk for developmental delays. Family integrated care (FICare) is a novel care delivery model that integrates parents into their infant’s care in the neonatal intensive care unit. Two follow-up studies are presented to identify effects of Alberta FICare™ on the development of preterm infants born between 32 and 34 weeks of gestation. Data for Study 1 were collected at an age of 2 months, and between 6 and 24 months for Study 2. In Study 1, Ages and Stages Questionnaires (ASQ) and maternal psychosocial distress measures were completed by 330 mothers of 387 infants (FICare, n = 223; standard care, n = 164). Study 2 utilised an additional measure, the Parent–Child Interaction Teaching Scale, with 50 mothers of 61 infants (FICare, n = 30; standard care, n = 31). For Study 1, there was no effect of Alberta FICare™ on the ASQ domains of communication, problem solving, or personal–social at an age of 2 months. For Study 2, the risk of communication delay was significantly lower for infants in Alberta FICare™ compared with standard care. Results from Study 2 suggest a possible protective effect of Alberta FICare™ for the risk of communication delays between 6 and 24 months. Further investigation into the effect of Alberta FICare™ on parent–child interactions and implications for long-term development is warranted.

Abstract
Objective The aim of the study was to explore mothers’ experiences of having an infant born prematurely (28–32 weeks gestation). In particular, the study aimed to explore the developing parent–infant relationship 12–30 months since birth and the developing parental identity during hospitalization and discharge. Methods Twelve mothers, aged between 22 and 43, participated in the semi-structured interviews. The mean age of infants was 19 months. Interviews comprised open-ended questions and visual stimuli consisting of photographs brought by participants, word selection, and card sorting techniques. Data were analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2013). Results Three themes arose from a clustering of 10 subthemes: (a) Emotional Impact, (b) Searching for Parent Identity, and (c) Moving Beyond Adversity. Participants expressed experiencing heightened emotional distress during the time of their infants’ birth and hospitalization and initially not feeling like parents. Their parental identity strengthened as they became more involved in the care of their infant and began to accept the situation. Participants described parenting their premature infants differently compared with parents of full-term infants, and described adjusting to this difference over time. Conclusions The findings highlight the emotional experience and adjustment of mothers of premature infants, from hospital and postdischarge. The need for psycho-educational interventions postdischarge and parent-partnered models during hospitalization is discussed. In addition, the study demonstrates the use of integrating visual stimuli in qualitative data collection procedures, to elicit further meaning and interaction from participants with the interview process.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of Kangaroo Position (KP) in microcirculation (MC) of the flexor muscles of preterm newborns. METHOD A controlled clinical trial was conducted in the city of Recife, Brazil, with 26 preterm children randomized in the Kangaroo Group (13) and in the Control Group (13). Assessments of blood flow, temperature, and tissue oxygen saturation (SO2) were made at two different times and in the biceps brachii muscle and hamstrings muscle group: before the KP and after 24 h of KP. In the Control Group, the registrations were performed at the times corresponding to those of the Kangaroo Group. The mean values among the times were analyzed by paired t-test for repeated measures. The clinical trial was recorded in Clinical Trials (NCT03611088). RESULTS In the Kangaroo Group there was an increase in tissue temperature and blood flow at the time evaluation periods (p < 0.05). In the control group, there was no statistical difference between the recording moments hamstring muscles group, but in the biceps brachii, there was a reduction in mean blood flow (p = 0.023). CONCLUSION In conclusion, the KP has effects on the microcirculation of the flexor muscles of preterm newborns.

Abstract
Parents of extremely preterm infants (<28 weeks of gestation) report high levels of stress and anxiety related to daily needs after hospital discharge. Social support has a significant role in reducing the negative psychological impact of preterm birth and parents' adaptation to caregiving. We conducted a hermeneutic phenomenological study using Gadamer's approach to explore and describe the experiences of parents of technology-dependent extremely preterm infants of socio-family support after hospital discharge. The study was conducted in four several Spanish organizations for families with preterm infants. It includes 17 semi-structured interviews (12 mothers and 5 fathers). Three main themes emerged from the analysis: post-discharge formal support for extremely preterm infants and families, home neonatal care: family support, and a thread of hope: parent-to-parent support. The parents' main support resources to deal with everyday difficulties are healthcare professionals, their partners, grandmothers, and peer parents of extremely preterm infants. The findings may be used to guide healthcare professionals in the creation of a support program according to preferences and needs of parents.

The Effect of Paternal Skin-to-Skin Care: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Randomized Control Trials. Adv Neonatal Care 2022; 22:E22-E32. Abstract
BACKGROUND Research about skin-to-skin care (SSC) experiences in early period after birth has focused on mothers and infants. PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to determine the outcomes of paternal skin-to-skin care (P-SSC) in both fathers and infants. METHODS The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, PsycInfo, Airiti Library, and Google Scholar were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that reported outcomes of P-SSC in both fathers and infants. We calculated pooled mean differences (MDs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) using RevMan 5.3 for the meta-analysis [PROSPERO: CRD42018106790]. RESULTS Seven RCTs including a total of 552 participants were eligible for inclusion. Compared to the maternal skin-to-skin care (M-SSC), fathers in the P-SSC exhibited no significant differences in salivary oxytocin levels (MD: -0.35 pg/mL; 95% CI: -0.75, 0.05), salivary cortisol levels (MD: 0.25 μg/dL; 95% CI: -0.82, 1.33), or anxiety scores (MD: -0.17; 95% CI: -0.57, 0.22) during the period of SSC. Similarly, there were no significant differences in the salivary cortisol levels (MD: -0.11 μg/dL; 95% CI: -0.05, 0.28) among preterm infants between the 2 groups. However, the crying time was less among full-term infants in the P-SSC group compared with infants in the incubator care or cot care groups. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE AND RESEARCH P-SSC had similar effects as M-SSC on stress-related outcomes during and after SSC among fathers and infants in the early stages after birth. We recommend that P-SSC be implemented in the early stages after birth. Further RCTs with a longitudinal design and large samples are needed to better understand the long-term effects of P-SSC on fathers and infants.

Abstract
Background Preterm infants have higher nutrition needs than term infants. The effectiveness of various feeding supplementation was assessed by the improvement of health outcomes in single specific systematic reviews (SRs). The aim of this review was to comprehensively describe the effectiveness of feeding supplementation in promoting health outcomes of preterm infants. Methods A literature search was conducted in the PUBMED, EMBASE, Science Direct, Cochrane library, Web of Science, and Wiley online library. SRs selection followed clear inclusion and exclusion criteria. Pairs of reviewers independently applied the criteria to both titles/abstracts and full texts. Screening and data extraction were performed by using the advanced tables. The methodological quality of SRs and the quality of the evidence were carried out according to the Assessing the Methodological Quality of Systematic Reviews (AMSTAR) tool and the Grades of Recommendation, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation guidelines (GRADE) respectively. A qualitative synthesis of evidence is presented. Results Seventeen SRs were included in the review. Fifteen kinds of feeding supplementation were reported in the SRs. In preterm infants, the effectiveness of feeding supplementation in addition to regular breast-feeding was mainly shown in six aspects: physical health, neurodevelopment, biochemical outcomes, other health outcomes, morbidity and all-cause mortality. And the effectiveness of the interventions on health outcomes in preterm infants was found by most systematic reviews. The methodological quality of all the included SRs was high, and most of the evidences was of low or very low quality. Conclusions Our results will allow a better understanding of the feeding supplementation in preterm infants. Although the feeling supplements may improve the health outcomes of in preterm infants, the existing evidence is uncertain. Therefore, the clinical use of these supplements should be considered cautiously and more well-designed RCTs are still needed to further address the unsolved problems of the included SRs.

Abstract
We examined group differences between parents, both mothers and fathers, of premature and full-term infants to determine whether they differed in their reports of subjective parenting stress and in their level of parental reflective functioning (PRF). We also tested whether each parent's reflective functioning moderated the links between birth status (prematurity vs. full-term) and parenting stress. A sample of 73 cohabiting, heterosexual Israeli families with a premature (28-36th week gestational age, N = 34) or full-term infant (37th week and above gestational age, N = 39) participated, comprising the two parents' groups. Infants' age averaged 7.07 months (SD = 1.28). Each parent completed the Parent Stress Inventory (PSI) individually to determine his/her subjective personal and childrearing stress levels. The Parent Development Interview (PDI-R2-S) was used to obtain each parent's PRF (self and child/relation-focused) level. Findings showed that the premature and full-term parents did not differ in their PSI scores or PRF levels. However, mothers' self-focused PRF moderated the link between prematurity and personal parenting stress, whereas fathers' self-focused PRF moderated the link between prematurity and childrearing parenting stress. Furthermore, fathers' and mothers' PRF operated differently in the premature and full-term parents' groups. The findings highlight the importance of mothers' and fathers' PRF in predicting parents' subjective stress in general and particularly in the case of infant prematurity. We discuss these findings and their relevance for preventive and therapeutic perinatal interventions.

Abstract
Background:
Prematurity brings along a high risk of early and late mortality and morbidity that demands specialized care within the NICU. Mothers of premature babies often feel powerless and helpless once the premature baby is discharged from the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). These experiences might interfere with their transitions into parenthood as they might question their ability to care for their baby. As nurses become greatly concerned regarding the continuity of care at home, the purpose of this study was to explore and describe the information that mothers of prematurely born babies need upon discharge for inclusion in a guideline booklet.
Methods:
A qualitative explorative design was used to conduct interviews with mothers of prematurely born babies in a NICU of a tertiary hospital in Gauteng Province, South Africa. Purposive sampling was used to select mothers whose prematurely born babies were preparing for discharge from NICU and mothers whose babies were discharged and at home and were brought to the hospital for their six weeks follow-up after discharge. Unstructured individual interviews were conducted.
Results:
The following seven themes were identified, namely feeding of a prematurely born baby, positioning of the baby, infection control and hygiene, care for a sick baby or baby with special needs, immunisation and clinic visits, normal development and growth, and information guidelines.
Conclusion:
The findings of this study were used to include essential information in a guideline booklet for mothers with prematurely born babies upon discharge from the NICU.

Role alteration predicts anxiety and depressive symptoms in parents of infants with congenital heart disease: a pilot study. Cardiol Young 2021; 31:1842-1849. Abstract
BACKGROUND Parents of infants born with critical congenital heart disease are at risk for adverse mental health symptoms. The purpose of this study was to identify infant-, parent-, and environmental-based stressors for mothers and fathers after their infants' cardiac surgery, and to explore relationships between stressors and mental health symptoms of anxiety and depression. METHODS This study enrolled 28 biological mother-father dyads from families admitted to the paediatric cardiac intensive care unit for cardiac surgery at one free-standing children's hospital in the Northeast. Paired t-tests were used to examine group differences between mothers and fathers on perceived stressors and mental health symptoms, while linear mixed effects modelling was used to explore the predictive relationship between perceived stressors, personal factors, and mental health symptoms. RESULTS Mothers reported higher perceived stressor scores of parental role alteration (t = 4.03, p < 0.01) and infant appearance and behaviour (t = 2.61, p = 0.02), and total perceived stress (t = 2.29 p = 0.03), compared to fathers. Mothers also reported higher anxiety (t = 2.47, p = 0.02) and depressive symptoms (t = 3.25, p < 0.01) than fathers. In multivariable analysis, parental role alteration significantly predicted anxiety (t = 5.20, p < 0.01, d = 0.77) and depressive symptoms (t = 7.09, p < 0.01, d = 1.05) for mothers and fathers. The consensus subscale of the Dyadic Adjustment Scale also significantly predicted depressive symptoms (t = -2.42, p = 0.02, d = 0.04). CONCLUSION Parents were distressed during their infant's admission for surgical repair for critical congenital heart disease. Parental role alteration was significantly associated with parental anxiety and depressive symptoms, while poor relationship quality was associated with depressive symptoms, highlighting areas for potential nursing-led psychosocial led interventions.

Abstract
The number of babies born extremely low birth weight surviving to be discharged home after experiencing the NICU continues to improve. Unfortunately, early sensory development for these babies occurs in an environment vastly different from the intended in-utero environment and places them at high risk of long-term neurodevelopmental and neurocognitive challenges. Our goal in the NICU must transition from simply discharge home to supporting the neurosensory development necessary for a thriving lifetime. To accomplish a goal of thriving families and thriving babies, it is clear the NICU interprofessional team must share an understanding of neurosensory development, the neuroprotective strategies safeguarding development, the neuropromotive strategies supporting intended maturational development, and the essential nature of family integration in these processes. We share the educational endeavors of 11 center collaboratives in establishing the foundational knowledge necessary to support preterm babies and their families.

Abstract
Developmental problems in extremely preterm (EP) infants and the associated longitudinal burden for their families are major health issues worldwide. Approaches to social-emotional support such as family-integrating Creative Music Therapy (CMT) are warranted. We aimed: (1) to explore parental perspectives on the use of CMT with EP infants in the neonatal hospitalization period and (2) to examine the possible longitudinal influence of CMT. A qualitative design was used to examine the perspective of six families from various backgrounds. Semi-structured interviews were carried out when the infants reached school age. We used an inductive-deductive thematic analysis to identify three main themes, each with three sub-themes: (1) the positive impact of CMT on the infants, the parents, and bonding; (2) the attitude toward CMT, from being open-minded to recommending it as complementary therapy; and (3) the experience of overall healthy infant development despite unique developmental delay issues. The findings elucidate the positive and formative impact of CMT on both infants and parents in the stressful NICU setting and beyond. CMT may empower positive transformation in the parents through individualized early nurturing musical interactions, capacity building, and positive reinforcement. Further research may help to identify and implement potentially modifiable factors for improving health care in this vulnerable group through early family-integrating, resource-based approaches such as CMT.

Abstract
Moderate to late preterm infants are at risk of developing problems later in life. To support attachment and infants’ development, high quality parent-infant interaction is important. Parent-infant interaction is known to improve through intervention programs but since no such intervention program is addressed directly to moderate to late preterm infants, a tailor-made intervention was developed. The aim was to describe the rationale, development, framework and practical provision of a new early collaborative intervention program. This study has a descriptive design and the intervention is described using the Template for Intervention Description and Replication. During an intervention-session, the preterm infant’s cues are made visible to the parents as they perform an everyday care-taking procedure. Instant feedback is delivered to give the parents the opportunity to notice, interpret and respond to cues immediately. The infant’s response to the parent’s action is discussed in a dialogue to instantly guide parents´ awareness of the preterm infant’s subtle cues. This study describes a new early collaborative intervention, developed to support interaction between parents and their moderate to late preterm infants starting in the neonatal intensive care unit. Abstract
Increased survival in the very preterm population results in a higher risk of developing neurodevelopmental and behavioral disabilities among survivors. We examined the outcomes of very preterm infants and parents after a preventive intervention program of four home visits by a specialized nurse, 5 days, 2 weeks, and 1 month after discharge, respectively, and at CA 2 months, followed by up to 12 times of group sessions between CA 3 and 6 months. Our multicenter randomized controlled trial assessed 138 preterm infants (gestational age ≤30 weeks or birth weight ≤1500 g) enrolled from the three participating hospitals. We randomly allocated the preterm babies to either the intervention or the control group. The primary outcome was the neurodevelopmental outcomes of Bayley-III scores at CA 10 and 24 months. At CA 10 months and 24 months, there were no significant differences between the intervention and control groups in the cognitive, motor, and language domains of Bayley-III scores. In addition, there were no significant differences in the mother’s depression scale, mother–child attachment, and the modified Infant and Toddler Social and Emotional Assessment.
