Abstract
OBJECTIVE Studies that have investigated the effect of nutritional counseling during the prenatal period on the follow-up outcomes of children at 6 mo have produced inconclusive results. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of nutritional counseling, based on the NOVA food classification, encouraging the consumption of fresh and minimally processed foods, with overweight adult pregnant women on infant growth at 6 mo of age. METHODS A randomized controlled trial with 195 pairs of pregnant overweight women and their infants at 6 mo of age was conducted in a Brazilian municipality. The pregnant women were allocated to the control group (CG) or intervention group (IG) at the beginning of the pregnancy. The IG received three sessions of nutrition counseling throughout the pregnancy. Linear regression models were used to investigate the effect of the nutritional counseling on infant growth. RESULTS One hundred ninety-five mother-infant pairs with complete data were included (96 CG, and 99 IG). The mean ± SD infant weight (g) at 6 mo was 7856.1 ± 1.1, and length (cm) was 67.0 ± 2.9. There were no differences in maternal and newborn characteristics between the groups. In the linear regression models, the counseling had no effect on anthropometric parameters of the infants at 6 mo of age: weight-for-length Z-score (β 0.089 [95% CI -0.250; 0.427], P = 0.61); length-for-age Z-score (β 0.032 [95% CI -0.299; 0.363], P = 0.85); weight-for-age Z-score (β 0.070 [95% CI -0.260; 0.400], P = 0.68); BMI-age Z-score (β 0.072 [95% CI -0.270; 0.414], P = 0.68). CONCLUSIONS There was no effect on infant growth at 6 mo of age after the nutritional counseling during pregnancy. Future studies are needed to confirm this hypothesis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE 1) To evaluate the impact of the Futuros Fuertes intervention on infant feeding, screen time, and sleep practices and 2) To use qualitative methods to explore mechanisms of action. METHODS Low-income Latino infant-parent dyads were recruited from birth to 1 month and randomized to Futuros Fuertes or a financial coaching control. Parents received health education sessions from a lay health educator at well-child visits in the first year of life. Parents received two text messages per week that reinforced intervention content. We assessed infant feeding, screen time, and sleep practices via surveys. body mass index z-score (BMI-z) was measured at 6 and 12 months. Seventeen parents from the intervention arm participated in a semi-structured interview that explored parental experiences with the intervention. RESULTS There were n = 96 infant-parent dyads randomized. Fruit intake was higher in the intervention group at 15 months (1.1 vs 0.86 cups p = 0.05). Breastfeeding rates were higher in intervention participants at 6 months (84% vs 59% p = 0.02) and 9 months (81% vs 51% p = 0.008). Mean daily screen time was lower among intervention participants at 6 months (7 vs 22 min p = 0.003), 12 months (35 vs 52 min p = 0.03), and 15 months (60 vs 73 min p = 0.03). Major qualitative themes include 1) parental trust in intervention messaging 2) changes in feeding and screen time parenting practices, 3) text messages supported behavior change for parents and family members, and 4) varying effectiveness of intervention on different health behaviors. CONCLUSIONS Low-income Latino infants participating in the Futuros Fuertes intervention had modestly healthier feeding and screen time practices compared to control participants.

Abstract
Across populations, human morbidity and mortality risks generally follow clear gradients, with socially-disadvantaged individuals and groups tending to have higher morbidity and mortality at all life stages relative to those more socially advantaged. Anthropologists specialize in understanding the proximate and ultimate factors that shape variation in human biological functioning and health and are therefore well-situated to explore the relationships between social position and health in diverse ecological and cultural contexts. While human biologists have developed sophisticated methods for assessing health using minimally-invasive methods, at a disciplinary level, we have room for conceptual and methodological improvement in how we frame, measure, and analyze the social inequities that might shape health inequities. This toolkit paper elaborates on some steps human biologists should take to enhance the quality of our research on health inequities. Specifically, we address: (1) how to frame unequal health outcomes (i.e., inequalities vs. disparities vs. inequities) and the importance of identifying our conceptual models of how these inequities emerge; (2) how to measure various axes of social inequities across diverse cultural contexts, and (3) approaches to community collaboration and dissemination. We end by discussing (4) future directions in human biology research of health inequities, including understanding the ultimate causes of sensitivity to social inequities and transitioning from research to action.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION We examined the scope of literature including non-parental caregiver involvement in child obesity prevention interventions. METHODS We conducted a scoping review following the Arksey and O'Malley framework, including only studies reporting the effect of an intervention on growth, weight, or early childhood obesity risk among children ages 0 to three years, published between 2000 and 2021. Interventions that did not include non-parental caregivers (adults regularly involved in childcare other than parents) were excluded. RESULTS Of the 14 studies that met the inclusion criteria, all were published between 2013 and 2020, and most interventions (n = 9) were implemented in the United States. Eight of the 14 interventions purposefully included other non-parental caregivers: five included both parents and non-parental caregivers, and the remaining three included only non-parental caregivers. Most interventions (n = 9) showed no significant impact on anthropometric outcomes. All interventions found improvements in at least one behavioral outcome (e.g., food groups intake (n = 5), parental feeding practices (n = 3), and screen time (n = 2)). This review can inform future interventions that plan to involve non-parental caregivers, which may be beneficial in shaping early health behaviors and preventing obesity early in life.

Directionality of the associations between bedsharing, maternal depressive symptoms, and infant sleep during the first 15 months of life. Sleep Health 2022; 8:39-46. Abstract
OBJECTIVES To identify predictors of infant sleep arrangement and examine the directionality of the relationships between maternal depressive symptoms, infant sleep problems, and bedsharing. DESIGN Secondary analysis of longitudinal data from the Mothers and Others: Family-Based Obesity Prevention for Infants and Toddlers randomized trial. SETTING Central North Carolina, USA. PARTICIPANTS Four-hundred and twenty-eight predominantly low-income, non-Hispanic Black mother-infant pairs. MEASUREMENTS Data were collected at 28 weeks pregnancy and 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, and 15 months postpartum. Maternal depressive symptoms were measured using the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale and infant sleep variables were measured using the Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire. RESULTS The prevalence of reported bedsharing increased from 16.7% at 1 month to 35.6% at 15 months postpartum. Bedsharing was associated with shortened breastfeeding duration and maternal perception of an infant sleep problem. Concurrently, maternal perception of an infant sleep problem, but not presence of maternal depressive symptoms, was associated with an increased likelihood of bedsharing. Longitudinally, neither maternal perception of an infant sleep problem nor presence of maternal depressive symptoms predicted bedsharing. Bedsharing predicted an increased likelihood of maternal perception of an infant sleep problem and presence of maternal depressive symptoms. CONCLUSION Prevalence of bedsharing increased over time and was predictive of maternal depressive symptoms. Providers should discuss the conflicting infant sleep recommendations with their patients and provide safe-sleep guidelines for mothers who intend to bedshare.

Abstract
Much literature links individual feeding styles to infant feeding practices and growth; however, parents' feeding styles are not discrete and may vary by context. We use latent profile analysis (LPA) as a person-centered approach to categorize infant feeding style patterns, test factors predicting profile membership, and examine if profiles are associated with infant feeding and weight. Additionally, we test the impact of a responsive feeding intervention on profile membership and stability. Data come from 270 African-American women and infants participating in the Mothers and Others Study, an early life obesity prevention intervention. LPA was used to categorize mothers across five constructs (laissez-faire, pressuring, restrictive, responsive and indulgent) measured at 28-weeks gestation and 3- and 15-months postpartum. Adjusted multinomial regression and regression models test the characteristics associated with profile membership and the associations between profile membership and breastfeeding and infant weight-for-age z-score (WAZ). We identified two groups (Positive and Less Responsive) prenatally, an additional group (High Controlling) at 3 months and a fourth group (High Indulgent) at 15 months. Several characteristics differed between the groups, including maternal age, income and depressive symptoms, infant sex and temperament, and treatment group. Mothers in the Positive group were more likely to breastfeed at 3 months. Infants with mothers in the High Controlling group had higher WAZ at 15 months. The intervention was associated with more Positive feeding practices at 15 months and a greater likelihood of remaining in the Positive group across the study. LPA identified profiles that are associated with maternal and infant characteristics and treatment group and with better feeding practices and growth outcomes, providing preliminary evidence that early intervention promoting more responsive feeding profiles may improve infant outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Early pregnancy through the first year of life represents an important period for family health promotion and obesity prevention. Overall, preventive interventions in pregnancy and infancy have insufficiently engaged fathers. We describe the rationale and design of First Heroes, an intervention to improve perinatal and obesity-related outcomes among mother-father-infant triads beginning in pregnancy. METHODS/DESIGN First Heroes is a hybrid type 1 effectiveness-implementation randomized trial of mother-father-infant triads recruited in the second trimester of pregnancy from a large Obstetric practice in eastern Massachusetts and continuing through 12 months of infant age. Triads are randomized to the intervention arm or to an enhanced safety education control group. Triads randomized to the intervention arm receive three virtual visits with a health educator, in the 3rd trimester of pregnancy, at 3-4 weeks, and 3-4 months postpartum, and receive continuous multimedia education through text messaging, print material, and videos. The educational curriculum addresses parent health behaviors, family relationships, social determinants of health, and infant feeding, sleep, and development. The primary outcome is prevalence of rapid infant weight gain from birth to 6 months of age. Secondary outcomes include parent anthropometrics, parent obesogenic behaviors, family functioning, and infant behaviors. DISCUSSION First Heroes will evaluate the extent to which intentional mother-father dyad engagement, coaching on adoption of early life health behaviors, and addressing social determinants of health, influence obesogenic behaviors and outcomes in the first year of life. Findings from this work will inform future obesity prevention efforts, especially those focused on whole family inclusion.
