Abstract
Food additives are employed in the food industry to enhance the color, smell, and taste of foods, increase nutritional value, boost processing efficiency, and extend shelf life. Consumers are beginning to prioritize food ingredients that they perceive as supporting a healthy lifestyle, emphasizing ingredients they deem acceptable as alternative or "clean-label" ingredients. Ready-to-eat (RTE) meat products can be contaminated with pathogens and spoilage microorganisms after the cooking step, contributing to food spoilage losses and increasing the risk to consumers for foodborne illnesses. More recently, consumers have advocated for no artificial additives or preservatives, which has led to a search for antimicrobials that meet these demands but do not lessen the safety or quality of RTE meats. Lactates and diacetates are used almost universally to extend the shelf life of RTE meats by reducing spoilage organisms and preventing the outgrowth of the foodborne pathogen Listeria monocytogenes. These antimicrobials applied to RTE meats tend to be broad-spectrum in their activities, thus affecting overall microbial ecology. It is to the food processing industry's advantage to target spoilage organisms and pathogens specifically.

Abstract
The progress achieved in recent years in the biomedical field justifies the objective evaluation of new techniques and materials obtained by using silver in different forms as metallic silver, silver salts, and nanoparticles. Thus, the antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activity of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) confers to newly obtained materials characteristics that make them ideal candidates in a wide spectrum of applications. In the present study, the use of hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) in the new formulation, by embedding AgNPs with antibacterial activity, using poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) as a stabilizing agent was investigated. AgNPs were incorporated in HPMC solutions, by thermal reduction of silver ions to silver nanoparticles, using PVP as a stabilizer; a technique that ensures the efficiency and selectivity of the obtained materials. The rheological properties, morphology, in vitro antimicrobial activity, and stability/catching of Ag nanoparticles in resulting HPMC/PVP-AgNPs materials were evaluated. The obtained rheological parameters highlight the multifunctional roles of PVP, focusing on the stabilizing effect of new formulations but also the optimization of some properties of the studied materials. The silver amount was quantified using the spectroscopy techniques (energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (XRF), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX)), while formation of the AgNPs was confirmed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and dynamic light scattering (DLS). Also, the morphological examination (Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM)) by means of the texture roughness parameters has evidenced favorable characteristics for targeted applications. Antibacterial activity was tested against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus and was found to be substantially improved was silver was added in the studied systems.

Abstract
From a design of experiments (DOE) performed under four independent variables, with the filmogenicity conditions and shortest disintegration time as the answers, a new oral disintegrating film (ODF) based on hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) and guar gum (GG) with the essential oil of Plectranthus amboinicus L. (EOPA) was developed. Sixteen formulations were tested for filmogenicity, homogeneity, and viability. The better selected ODF required 230.1 s for complete disintegration. The retention rate of the EOPA was quantified using the nuclear magnetic resonance hydrogen technique (H1 NMR), which identified the presence of 0.14 % carvacrol. The scanning electron microscopy showed a smooth and homogeneous surface with the presence of small white dots. Through the disk diffusion test, the EOPA was able to inhibit the growth of clinical strains of the Candida genus and gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial strains. This work opens new perspectives for the development of antimicrobial ODFS used in clinical practice.

Abstract
The present study aimed to develop a nicotine microemulsion (NCT-ME) and incorporate it into a fast-dissolving film. The NCT-ME was prepared by mixing the specified proportions of nicotine (NCT), surfactant, co-solvent, and water. The NCT-ME was measured by its average droplet size, size distribution, zeta potential, and morphology. NCT-ME fast-dissolving films were prepared by the solvent casting technique. The films were characterized by morphology, weight, thickness, disintegration time, and mechanical strength properties and the determined NCT loading efficiency and in vitro drug release. The results showed that almost all NCT-MEs presented droplet sizes of less than 100 nm with a spherical form, narrow size distribution, and zeta potentials of −10.6 to −73.7 mV. There was no difference in weight and thickness between all NCT-ME films, but significant changes in the disintegration times were noticed in NCT40-Smix[PEG-40H(2:1)]10 film. The mechanical properties of films varied with changes in type of surfactant. About 80% of the drug release was observed to be between 3 and 30 min. The drug release kinetics were fitted with the Higuchi matrix model. The NCT40-Smix[P-80(1:1)]10 film showed the highest dissolution rate. It was concluded that the developed ME-loaded fast-dissolving film can increase drug release to a greater extent than the films without ME.

Abstract
The greater awareness of non-renewable natural resources preservation needs has led to the development of more ecological high-performance polymeric materials with new functionalities. In this regard, biobased composites are considered interesting options, especially those obtained from agro-industrial wastes and by-products. These are low-cost raw materials derived from renewable sources, which are mostly biodegradable and would otherwise typically be discarded. In this review, recent and innovative academic studies on composites obtained from biopolymers, natural fillers and active agents, as well as green-synthesized nanoparticles are presented. An in-depth discussion of biobased composites structures, properties, manufacture, and life-cycle assessment (LCA) is provided along with a wide up-to-date overview of the most recent works in the field with appropriate references. Potential uses of biobased composites from agri-food residues such as active and intelligent food packaging, agricultural inputs, tissue engineering, among others are described, considering that the specific characteristics of these materials should match the proposed application.

Abstract
In 2018, the worldwide consumption of meat was 346.14 million tonnes, and this is expected to increase in the future. As meat consumption increases, the use of packaging materials is expected to increase along with it. Petrochemical packaging materials which are widely used in the meat processing industry, take a long time to regenerate and biodegrade, thus they adversely affect the environment. Therefore, the necessity for the development of eco-friendly packaging materials for meat processing, which are easily degradable and recyclable, came to the fore. The objective of this review is to describe the application of natural compound-derived edible films with their antioxidant and antibacterial activities in meat and meat products. For several decades, polysaccharides (cellulose, starch, pectin, gum, alginate, carrageenan and chitosan), proteins (milk, collagen and isolated soy protein) and lipids (essential oil, waxes, emulsifiers, plasticizers and resins) were studied as basic materials for edible films to reduce plastic packaging. There are still high consumer demands for eco-friendly alternatives to petrochemical-based plastic packaging, and edible films can be used in a variety of ways in meat processing. More efforts to enhance the physiological and functional properties of edible films are needed for commercial application to meat and meat products.

Abstract
Food packaging is an area of interest not just for food producers or food marketing, but also for consumers who are more and more aware about the fact that food packaging has a great impact on food product quality and on the environment. The most used materials for the packaging of food are plastic, glass, metal, and paper. Still, over time edible films have become widely used for a variety of different products and different food categories such as meat products, vegetables, or dairy products. For example, proteins are excellent materials used for obtaining edible or non-edible coatings and films. The scope of this review is to overview the literature on protein utilization in food packages and edible packages, their functionalization, antioxidant, antimicrobial and antifungal activities, and economic perspectives. Different vegetable (corn, soy, mung bean, pea, grass pea, wild and Pasankalla quinoa, bitter vetch) and animal (whey, casein, keratin, collagen, gelatin, surimi, egg white) protein sources are discussed. Mechanical properties, thickness, moisture content, water vapor permeability, sensorial properties, and suitability for the environment also have a significant impact on protein-based packages utilization.

Abstract
The binding affinity and thermodynamics of family 4 carbohydrate-binding module (CBM4), belonging to type B CBM, on model surfaces of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and nanofibrils (CNF) were investigated by quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D) technology in real-time at different temperatures. The thermodynamic parameters associated with the interaction, such as Gibbs free energy, enthalpy change, entropy change and heat capacity were obtained using the van't Hoff analysis via a nonlinear parameter estimation. The results demonstrated CBM4 binds preferentially to both CNF and CNC, whereas the driving forces behind them were very different. The former was related to the hydrogen bonds formed in the CBM4 clefts, resulting in a favorable enthalpy but compensated by unfavorable entropy change; on the contrary, the latter was mainly driven by favorable entropy but compensated by unfavorable enthalpic change due to water rearrangement.

Abstract
While drug-loaded microparticles (MPs) can serve as drug reservoirs for sustained drug release and therapeutic effects, needle clogging by MPs poses a challenge for ocular drug delivery via injection. Two polymers commonly used in ophthalmic procedures-hyaluronic acid (HA) and methylcellulose (MC)-have been tested for their applicability for ocular injections. HA and MC were physically blended with sunitinib malate (SUN)-loaded PLGA MPs for subconjunctival (SCT) injection into rat eyes. The HA and MC viscous solutions facilitated injection through fine-gauged needles due to their shear-thinning properties as shown by rheological characterizations. The diffusion barrier presented by HA and MC reduced burst drug release and extended overall release from MPs. The significant level of MP retention in the conjunctiva tissue post-operation confirmed the minimal leakage of MPs following injection. The safety of HA and MC for ocular applications was demonstrated histologically.

Abstract
Edible films and coating materials are commonly used as appropriate packaging materials to extend the shelf life of fresh food. Due to all their properties, edible film and coating materials have been received much attention. They are biodegradable, edible, and good barrier against environmental parameters; thereby, they could carry and deliver food additives protecting food quality. Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), a cellulose derivatives, can act as an excellent film-forming agent for coating food produces. The aim of this study was to provide an overview of the HPMC properties and investigate the effects of various additives on its film-forming properties, such as rheological behavior, water vapor, and gas permeability, as well as mechanical, optical, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties, with a focus on the recent progress and outputs, which has been recently published. Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose is prone to be commonly used as an advanced film-forming and coating materials for the sake of well miscibility with a wide range of organic and inorganic materials. However, this polymer requires further improvements regarding moisture susceptibility and thermal properties.

Abstract
Using wood pulps with the average degree of polymerization 300-350 and urea as raw materials, cellulose carbamates were successfully synthesized by esterification reaction in N, N-dimethylacetamide(DMAc), an inexpensive, high boiling aprotic and polar solvent, for the purpose of improving the solubility of cellulose, reducing costs and environmental pollution. The products were dissolved in 9% sodium hydroxide solution at a low temperature after washing and drying and the cellulose carbamates solutions were obtained. The solutions were uniformly casted on a glass support after degassing. The regenerated cellulose membranes (CMs) were prepared by immersing the support in coagulation bath for some minutes. The structures of cellulose carbamates were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), 13C solid state nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry (13C NMR), Thermal gravimetric analysis(TG), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffractometry(XRD). The filtration performances of CMs were tested. The results reveal that part groups of cellulose were substituted by amino in the medium, the cellulose carbamates were prepared with the reducing crystallinity and thermal decomposition temperature. The CMs have good separation performance for methylene blue.

Abstract
Carbohydrate-binding modules (CBMs) are discrete parts of carbohydrate-hydrolyzing enzymes that bind specific types of carbohydrates. Ultra high-resolution X-ray crystallographic studies of CBMs have helped to decipher the basis for specificity in carbohydrate-protein interactions. However, additional studies are needed to better understand which structural determinants confer which carbohydrate-binding properties. To address these issues, neutron crystallographic studies were initiated on one experimentally engineered CBM derived from a xylanase, X-2 L110F, a protein that is able to bind several different plant carbohydrates such as xylan, β-glucan and xyloglucan. This protein evolved from a CBM present in xylanase Xyn10A of Rhodothermus marinus. The protein was complexed with a branched xyloglucan heptasaccharide. Large single crystals of hydrogenous protein (∼1.6 mm(3)) were grown at room temperature and subjected to H/D exchange. Both neutron and X-ray diffraction data sets were collected to 1.6 Å resolution. Joint neutron and X-ray refinement using phenix.refine showed significant density for residues involved in carbohydrate binding and revealed the details of a hydrogen-bonded water network around the binding site. This is the first report of a neutron structure of a CBM and will add to the understanding of protein-carbohydrate binding interactions.
