Abstract
BACKGROUND The rapid and accurate assessment of neonatal asphyxia is critical to preventing potentially fatal outcomes. Therefore, nursing students must acquire the skills to assess newborn conditions immediately after birth and implement appropriate interventions. Virtual reality (VR) simulation education has emerged as a promising tool for nursing education, offering repetitive and customizable clinical training while ensuring patient safety and overcoming spatiotemporal limitations. AIM This study investigated the effects of a contactless hand-tracking-based immersive VR neonatal Apgar scoring program, adapted from experiential learning theory. DESIGN A non-randomized controlled trial with a pre-post-test, quasi-experimental design was conducted. SETTINGS The study was conducted at two nursing schools from July to October 2023. PARTICIPANTS Participants comprised nursing students holding bachelor's degrees in nursing, with three or four years of experience and successful completion of a neonatal nursing theory course. Additionally, individuals with at least six months of experience working in a neonatal ward or delivery room before enrolling in nursing school were eligible. METHODS The participants were divided into three groups: the VR group (n = 27) received contactless hand-tracking-based immersive VR neonatal Apgar scoring training; the simulation group (n = 28) received face-to-face Apgar scoring simulation training; and the control group (n = 26) received instruction on the Apgar scoring criteria. Changes in scores among the VR, simulation, and control groups were statistically compared using ANOVA with SPSS-WIN 27.0. RESULTS The VR group exhibited significant improvements in knowledge, learning satisfaction, self-confidence, immersion, and motivation compared to the simulation and control groups. Moreover, satisfaction was significantly higher in the VR group than in the simulation group. CONCLUSIONS The hand-tracking-based immersive VR neonatal Apgar scoring program represents an innovative and effective educational tool, prioritizing the privacy and rights of mothers and infants. It can potentially replace traditional delivery-room clinical training, which is observation-based and limited.

Abstract
Introduction Online learning has changed the educational environment and may influence the development of nursing skills, mastery, and competence in students. Objective The study aimed to investigate how nursing students acquire procedural skills, achieve mastery, and build competence through online learning, considering the growing use of technology in healthcare education. Methods This study utilized a qualitative descriptive research approach to investigate the experiences of 32 nursing students from the Nursing Department who had undergone online procedural learning. Semistructured interviews were conducted to collect in-depth insights. Purposive sampling was used to gather data with a profound understanding of the phenomenon. The data analysis encompassed a methodical content analysis coding procedure. Independent researchers reviewed the results to validate the findings. Results Content analysis of the data identified three key themes: achieving nursing procedural knowledge through online learning, achieving nursing procedural skills with the power of online learning, and gaining procedural competence through online social and collaborative learning. Conclusions Online learning played a significant role in shaping and enhancing nursing procedural knowledge, skills, and competence, emphasizing the importance of integrating technology training modules and staying updated with emerging technologies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This review aimed to systematically scope undergraduate or postgraduate tertiary higher education nursing students' clinical practice teaching and assessment methods to identify features that align with promoting students' evaluative judgement. INTRODUCTION Evaluative judgement is a new concept to nursing tertiary education. Currently, there are no published reviews of evaluative judgement in nursing clinical practice education. This review aims to assist nursing educators to operationalise the concept of evaluative judgement in clinical practice education. As such the starting point was to determine features of evaluative judgement in current clinical teaching and assessment designs. INCLUSION CRITERIA Peer reviewed qualitative or quantitative studies that have evaluated teaching and/or assessment of tertiary (university/higher education) pre-registration (undergraduate) or post-registration (postgraduate) nursing students' clinical practice. METHODS The systematic scoping review was prospectively registered systematic review (OSF DOI 10.17605/OSF.IO/PYWZ6) reported using PRISMA guidelines. A systematic search of five databases (Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, ProQuest, CINAHL) was conducted, limited from 1989 onwards and in English. Two reviewers independently screened titles and abstracts, then full text, with disagreements resolved with a third independent author. Data were extracted, including the frequency and methods of developing students' evaluative judgement across the categories of discerning quality, judgement process, calibration and feedback. A narrative synthesis was performed. RESULTS Seventy-one studies were included (n=53 teaching, n=18 assessment). Most of the included studies, included some, but not all, of the features to develop nursing students' evaluative judgment. For teaching methods, the most identified evaluative judgement features in the included studies were discerning quality (n=47), feedback (n=41) and judgement process (n=21). Only three studies included a method of calibration. For the assessment methods, feedback (n=16), discerning quality (n=15), judgement process (n=9) and calibration (n=4) were included. Many clinical practice teaching and assessment methods in nursing included features that develop students' evaluative judgement, with methods relating to discerning quality and feedback well embedded. Further adjustments are required to include methods to assist students to judge and calibrate their own performance. CONCLUSION This systematic scoping review identified that evaluative judgement in current nursing clinical teaching and assessment is not an overt aim. With minor adjustment to teaching and assessment design, nursing students could be better supported to develop their ability to judge the value of their own work.

Abstract
Background Robust evidence supports the effectiveness of simulation training in nursing and midwifery education. Simulation allows trainees to apply newly-learned skills in a supportive environment. Method This study was conducted using the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR). We conducted in-depth individual interviews with simulation experts around the world. Results Findings from this study highlight best-practices in facilitating simulation implementation across resources settings. Universal accelerators included: (1) adaptability of simulation (2) "simulation champions" (3) involving key stakeholders and (4) culturally-informed, pre-implementation planning. Conclusions Shared constructs reported in diverse settings provide lessons to implementing evidence-based, flexible simulation trainings in pre-service curriculum.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Building mastery of clinical skills is essential for nursing students to ensure readiness for clinical placements. During the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, limited face-to-face teaching and student access to campus facilities, along with the rapid adoption of online methods, increased the need to develop innovative teaching tools to support students. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to explore nursing student perceptions and experiences of using Flipcharts for learning clinical nursing skills during the COVID-19 pandemic. DESIGN This study used a qualitative descriptive design. METHODS Second-year nursing students were invited to participate at the end of the semester to share their experiences of using Flipcharts in their clinical simulation laboratory. A total of 12 nursing students participated in individual semi-structured interviews conducted between December 2020 and February 2021. Data were analysed using Braun and Clarke's six-step method of thematic analysis. RESULTS The findings of the study demonstrated that students considered Flipcharts to be beneficial in developing their clinical skills and were additionally valuable in supporting students with English as a second language. Three major themes were identified: the perceived value of Flipcharts during limited face-to-face teaching, the role of Flipcharts in supporting skills acquisition across learning domains, and the practicality and accessibility of this learning resource across different mediums. CONCLUSION Students perceived the use of Flipcharts to be valuable in achieving mastery of clinical skills during COVID-19. The students' experience of using Flipcharts was positive overall and found the learning tool practical and accessible in supplementing learning.

Abstract
Background Practical skills are complex procedures integrating communication and caring, as well as technical and manual aspects. Simulation at a simulation/skills center offers a wide range of learning activities and aims to imitate patient situations. Objectives To investigate the international research literature on practical skills learning in simulation/skills centers in nursing education. Research questions: 1. What are the range and type of practical skills studied? 2. What learning activities are focused on in the studies included in the review? 3. What are the learning outcomes and how are they assessed? Design Narrative review. Methods We searched electronically and included studies from Medline Ovid, CINAHL, Eric, Embase, Academic Search Premiere, and Cochrane. Unique indexing terms and search strategies were developed for each database. The criteria for inclusion were bachelor nursing students as the study population and practical nursing skills learning in simulation/skills centers. We used Rayyan QCRIt for the initial screening and the Mixed Method Appraisal Tool for quality assessment. We used a narrative approach to synthesize the diverse range of studies. Findings One hundred and twenty-one studies from 26 countries published between January 2013 and March 2022 were included. The amount of quantitative research was overwhelming (n = 108). A total of 50 different practical skills were represented. The studies focused on which learning modalities resulted in the best learning outcomes. Only 8.5% (n = 7) of the included studies concerned students' learning processes. Skill performance (n = 101), knowledge (n = 57), confidence (n = 34), and satisfaction (n = 32) were the main learning outcomes measured. Discussion The quality assessment indicated that 10 of the studies achieved 100% on the mixed method appraisal tool criteria. In many of the studies with quasi-experimental and randomized controlled trial designs, the intervention group received some form of educational treatment while the control group received no treatment. The choice of no treatment for the control group in pedagogical research seems to disregard the inherent purpose and effect of teaching and learning. Conclusion Heterogeneity in the use of learning modalities and measuring instruments precludes the possibility of building on other research. Technical skills were the preferred choice of skill, while skills that involved a fair measure of communication and collaboration were only sparingly studied. Students' learning processes were barely touched on in the included studies. More focus should be placed on this area in further research, since the choice of learning modalities may affect the students' learning processes in significant ways.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Graduate nurses commonly experience significant challenges in transitioning to professional practice. The practice readiness of graduate nurses continues to be a concern for nurse educators and industry partners. Introduction of pre-registration extended immersive ward-based simulation can provide opportunities for students to practice the role of registered nurse before graduation. It is not clear if participation in simulation-based learning transfers to increased preparedness for dealing with real-life situations following entry into the workforce. OBJECTIVE To report on student views on how ward-based immersive simulation assisted in preparing for clinical placement and graduate practice. DESIGN A qualitative, descriptive design was used to conduct a series of face-to-face focus groups. SETTING School of Nursing and Midwifery metropolitan Western Australian university. PARTICIPANTS Final year baccalaureate nursing students who had participated in six four-hour simulation workshops between February and April 2021 were selected through purposive sampling. METHODS Focus group and interview data was transcribed from audio recordings. A six-phase approach was used to analyse data into themes and sub-themes. The study adhered to the consolidated criteria for reporting of qualitative research. RESULTS Three focus groups and one interview were conducted. Eight themes emerged. Student learning was identified as occurring in a variety of ways, such as how to work as a team and was influenced by a number of factors, such as the capacity for students to self-reflect. CONCLUSIONS Learning opportunities for students to practice how to think and work independently as a registered nurse is something that can be supported by pre-registration extended immersive ward-based simulation. Understanding of what will be expected of them once qualified can make students more prepared for professional practice enabling them to apply knowledge gained from simulated experiences to a similar situation as a graduate nurse.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Conducting on-site, hands-on training during the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has been challenging. We conducted a before and after interventional study to estimate the efficacy of a new remote hands-on training model for improving the trainees' tracheal intubation competency using optical stylets. METHODS Residents or physicians in anesthesiology apartment who have not received the nominated training in tracheal intubation using optical stylets were enrolled. The 4-week training course contains theoretical knowledge along with preclinical and clinical training of optical stylets techniques. Competency of intubation using optical stylets on patients with normal airways was evaluated according to an assessment tool with a maximum score of 29 points based on video recording pre-post training performance. Pre-post questionnaires measured theoretical knowledge and self-efficacy. RESULTS Twenty-two participants were included (8 females, 14 men, mean age of 33.5 years). The total score of intubation competency was significantly improved after training from 14.6±3.7 to 25.3±2.6 (P < 0.0001). The scores of three subitems (anatomical identification, hand-eye coordination, and optimized intubation condition) were all significantly increased after training (P < 0.0001). The total percentage of correct answers in the multiple-choice questionnaire increased from 58.2%±8.2% before training to 85.2%±7.2% shortly after training (P < 0.0001). In addition, the self-efficacy score was significantly increased from 2.5±1.2 to 4.4±0.6 (P < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS The new remote and progressively advanced hands-on training model improved the competency of intubation using optical stylets under the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract
Background To implement developmental care accurately, neonatal intensive care unit nurses should have a proper understanding and sufficient knowledge in this field. Applying new approaches in education such as offline and online education help nurses improve their skills and knowledge. This study aimed to investigate the effect of virtual education on the perception and knowledge of neonatal developmental care in nurses working in neonatal intensive care units. Methods This quasi-experimental study was conducted using a pretest-posttest design with two groups. The participants were 60 nurses working in neonatal intensive care units who were selected using convenience sampling (30 persons in each group). The data were collected before and 1 month after the intervention. The participants in the intervention group received developmental care training using an electronic file uploaded to Navid Learning Management System, while the members of the control group received no intervention. The instruments used to collect the data were the Demographic Information Questionnaire, the Developmental Care Knowledge Scale, and the Developmental Care Perception Scale. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS V25 software. All statistical tests were performed at the significance level of 0.05. Results The Developmental Care perception scores before the intervention in the control and intervention groups were 83.40 ± 11.36 and 84.53 ± 9.48, respectively, showing no statistically significant difference (P = 0.67). Also, Developmental Care perception scores after the intervention in the control and intervention groups were 83.16 ± 13.73, and 94.70 ± 6.89, respectively, showing a statistically significant difference (P < 0.001). The results of paired t-test showed that the mean knowledge score in the control group before and after the intervention was not statistically significant (P < 0.903), while in the intervention group there was a statistically significant difference between the mean knowledge score before and after the intervention (P < 0.001). The Developmental Care Knowledge scores before the intervention in the control and intervention groups were 52.66 ± 18.08 and 77.16 ± 17.20, respectively, showing a statistically significant difference (P = 0.001). Also, Developmental Care Knowledge scores after the intervention in the control and intervention groups were 53.66 ± 26.55and 90.33 ± 13.82, respectively, showing a statistically significant difference (P < 0.001). The results of paired t-test showed that the mean knowledge score in the control group before and after the intervention was not statistically significant, while in the intervention group there was a statistically significant difference between the mean knowledge score before and after the intervention. Conclusion The results of this study showed that virtual education for the developmental care of premature infants plays an effective role in the perception and knowledge of nurses working in the neonatal intensive care unit. Therefore, the development of e-learning packages for developmental care and their availability for nurses can be a step to improve the quality of nursing care for infants admitted to the NICU.
