Associations between dietary patterns and blood pressure in a sample of Australian adults

Global Associations of the Traditional Japanese Diet Score with Hypertension Prevalence and Systolic Blood Pressure from 2009 to 2019: A Cross-Sectional and Longitudinal Ecological Study

OBJECTIVE

Prevention and improvement of hypertension is one of the most important health issues worldwide. The traditional Japanese diet contributes to the prevention of some non-communicable diseases associated with hypertension. However, whether traditional Japanese dietary patterns are associated with hypertension prevalence and systolic blood pressure (SBP) worldwide remains unknown. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether the traditional Japanese diet score (TJDS) is associated with hypertension prevalence and SBP.

METHODS

This cross-sectional and longitudinal ecological study from 2009 to 2019 included 141 countries with a population of at least 1 million. All data used for analysis were obtained from internationally available databases. The TJDS was calculated using country-specific supplies of five foods commonly eaten in the traditional Japanese diet (rice, fish, soybean, vegetables, and egg) and three less commonly eaten foods (wheat, milk, and red meat). Hypertension was defined by SBP ≥140 mmHg, diastolic blood pressure ≥90 mmHg, or use of antihypertensive medications. The mean SBP was >25 age-standardized data. A general linear model was used for the cross-sectional model in 2009, and a linear mixed model was used for the longitudinal analysis from 2009 to 2019. The covariates included gross domestic product, percentage of population aged >65 years, years of education, smoking rate, average body mass index, physical activity, and energy supply.

RESULTS

The TJDS was negatively associated with hypertension prevalence (β ± standard error: -0.861 ± 0.202, p < 0.001) and SBP (β ± standard error: -0.364 ± 0.154, p < 0.05) in the cross-sectional analysis. The TJDS was significantly negatively associated with hypertension prevalence (β ± standard error: -0.845 ± 0.200, p < 0.001) and SBP (β ± standard error: -0.312 ± 0.149, p < 0.05) in the 10-year longitudinal analysis controlled for full covariables.

CONCLUSIONS

Traditional Japanese dietary patterns are associated with lower hypertension prevalence and SBP worldwide.

Improvement and application of recommended food score for hypertension in Korean adults: the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study

Background

Addressing dietary factors to lower blood pressure can be a crucial strategy at the population level to mitigate the risk of hypertension. In a prior investigation, a tailored food score was used as a dietary index relevant to hypertension among Korean adults. This current study aims to assess the association between the overall quality of the diet, taking into account more precise food components, and evaluate the risk of developing hypertension.

Methods

This prospective cohort study included 5,342 adults aged 40-70 without hypertension who participated in the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study (KoGES) from 2001 to 2016. The improved Recommended Food Score for Hypertension (iRFSH) is a modified version of the Recommended Food Score to assess the consumption of foods recommended in the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet for Korean foods. A higher score reflects greater consumption of recommended foods, indicative of higher dietary quality. The maximum total score is 65. High blood pressure, which includes both hypertension and prehypertension, was analyzed using Cox proportional hazard regression models to examine its prospective relationship with iRFSH.

Results

Among 2,478 males and 2,864 females with 10.8 mean years of follow-up, a higher score of iRFSH was associated with a lower risk of hypertension in the highest quintile compared to the lowest quintile [total: hazard ratio (HR): 0.79; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.72, 0.87; female: HR: 0.71; 95% CI: 0.62, 0.83].

Conclusion

Higher iRFSH is associated with a lower incidence of hypertension. Our results suggest that the iRFSH may be a potential tool for assessing dietary quality and dietary patterns and predicting the risk of hypertension in Korean adults.

The effectiveness of Go/No-Go and Stop-Signal training in reducing food consumption and choice: A systematic review and meta-analysis

The Go/No-Go and Stop-Signal tasks have been used to reduce excess food intake via repeated pairing of food cues with response inhibition. A meta analysis of 32 studies was conducted to determine whether, and under which conditions, the Go/No-Go and Stop-Signal training tasks are effective in reducing food consumption or choice. Moderators included task parameters (e.g., number of sessions, stop signal), sample differences (e.g., age, weight), and the measure of food consumption or choice. Overall, there was a small effect for Go/No-Go and Stop-Signal training in reducing food consumption or choice, g = -0.21, CI95 = [-0.31, -0.11], p < .001, with this holding individually only for a single session of the Go/No-Go Task, g = -0.31, CI95 = [-0.45, -0.18], p < .001. Comprehensive investigation of the impact of varying moderators indicated that the effect for Go/No-Go training was robust. Nevertheless, there was significant variation in the specific parameters of the task. Overall, the present meta-analysis extends previous findings by providing comprehensive evidence that the Go/No-Go Task is effective in reducing food consumption and choice, as well as providing optimal parameter recommendations for the task.

A Retrospective Cohort Study of the Association Between Calcium Serum Level and Hypertension in Older Adults

INTRODUCTION

 One of the major global risk factors for cardiovascular morbidity and death is hypertension. Earlier research has been conducted on the connection between calcium consumption and blood pressure.

OBJECTIVE

This study aims to investigate the association between calcium serum levels and hypertension in older hypertensive adults.

METHODS

 A retrospective cohort study of 121 of hypertension patients was conducted in Prince Faisal Bin Khalid Cardiac Center. The data of all patients were collected by records, including lab, pathology, and medical review, in order to determine the effects on patients, providers, and institutions. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS Statistics version 26.0. A p-value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant.

RESULTS

 The study included 121 adult hypertensive patients with a mean of age 60.29 ± 13.92. The majority of included patients were male (81%). More than one-third of patients were obese (39.7%), about one-third (33.9%) were overweight, and 26.4% of patients were in normal weight. The majority of patients had co-morbidities (68.3%); about one-half of them had diabetes mellitus (52.1%). The calcium level mean was 5.07 ± 1.26. The creatine kinase (CK) (initial day) mean ± SD was 813.22 ± 1146.37 became 221.4 ± 330.67 on the last day. The CK-myocardial band (CK-MB) (initial day) was 65.43 ± 118.9 and became 24.38 ± 23.26 on the last day. Additionally, the troponin (initial day) mean was 23.49 ± 104.26 and became 1.65 ± 2.66 on the last day. The most common discharge medications were anti-platelets (95%), beta-blockers (78.5%), statins (70.2%), and proton-pump inhibitors (PPI) (64.5%). The hospital stay days ranged from 1 to 20 days with a mean of 4.83 ± 3.38. The ICU stay days ranged from 1 to 15 days with a mean of 3.57 ± 2.72. Most of the patients (90.9%) improved.

CONCLUSION

There is no significant correlation between calcium levels in hypertensive patients and the demographic characteristics of patients, home or current medications, ECHO findings, or procedures done. However, there is a significant correlation between the calcium level and CK level among patients with hypertension. Further investigations are required to verify the relationship between CK and calcium levels in hypertensive patients.

The relationship between inhibitory control and food consumption or choice: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Excess consumption of unhealthy foods has become a major public health problem. Although one potential contributor to unhealthy consumption is poor inhibitory control, findings have been inconsistent. A meta-analysis of 35 studies was conducted to determine whether, and under which conditions, inhibitory control, as measured by the Go/No-Go and Stop-Signal tasks, is associated with food consumption/choice. Moderators included the type of stimuli (neutral or food-specific) used in measuring inhibitory control, sample differences (e.g., age, gender, and weight), and the measure of food consumption or choice. Overall, there was a small positive association between inhibitory control and food consumption/choice, r = .09, CI₉₅ = [0.04, 0.14], p = .001. This held for the Stop-Signal Task in general, and for the Go/No-Go Task for children and when food consumption/choice was measured objectively. The present meta-analysis provides the first comprehensive evidence that inhibitory control, as measured by the Go/No-Go and Stop-Signal tasks, is associated with food consumption or choice, and points to inhibitory control as a potential target for reducing unhealthy food consumption.

Association between the prudent dietary pattern and blood pressure in Chinese adults is partially mediated by body composition

High blood pressure or hypertension is one of the major risks of cardiovascular disease, which is the leading cause of death in China. This study aimed to assess the relationship between dietary patterns and blood pressure among Chinese adults. Using factor analysis of 66-item food frequency questionnaire to identify dietary patterns. Systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were measured according to standardized guidelines. Multivariate linear regressions were performed in 6849 Chinese adults (46.5% female) aged 21-70 years considering sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle behaviors, and anthropometry data. The vegetable-rich pattern, animal-food pattern, and prudent dietary pattern were identified. After adjustment for potential confounders including age, gender, alcohol consumption, smoking status, energy intake, and physical activity, only prudent dietary pattern was negatively related to SBP (β = -2.30, p for trend =0.0003) and DBP (β = -1.44, p for trend =0.0006). Body mass index, waist circumstance and body fat percentage explained, respectively, 42.5%/47.8, 14.8%/17.6 and 26.0%/29.1% of the association between prudent pattern and SBP/DBP in mediation analysis. There were no association were observed between other dietary patterns and blood pressure. In conclusion, Prudent dietary pattern was associated with lower SBP and DBP among Southwest Chinese and this association was partially explained by body composition.

Adherence to the Chinese Food Pagoda in the High-Risk Population of Non-communicable Diseases Aged 35–59 in Central China

Objectives

A healthy dietary habit is essential for preventing non-communicable diseases (NCDs). We aimed to assess the adherence to the Chinese Food Pagoda (CFP) proposed in the Chinese Dietary Guidelines 2016 in the high-risk population of NCDs in central China.

Methods

A cross-sectional study was conducted in two large enterprises (totally 3,016 employees) from October to December 2019 in Hubei Province (central China). The high-risk population of NCDs was identified by physical examination, laboratory test and face-to-face questionnaire survey according to the National Norms for Prevention and Control of Non-communicable Diseases issued by the Chinese government. We assessed the deviation of real diet from the CFP recommended diet in the high-risk population of NCDs.

Results

A total of 821 participants aged 35–59 years old with at least one high-risk factor of NCDs were enrolled in our study. Of them, 53.8% were daily smokers, 49.6% had elevated blood cholesterol, 31.4% were centrally obese, 23.3% had high normal blood pressure, and 3.5% had impaired fasting glucose. Significant disparity was detected in the high-risk population of NCDs between real food consumption and the CFP's recommendation (P < 0.05), such as the deficient intake of nuts and milk and dairy products, and the over-consumption of cereals, meat and poultry, oil, and salt. Participants with impaired fasting glucose had the highest intake of cereals and vegetables on average. Participants with central obesity were more likely to consume meat and poultry (P < 0.05). The lowest average intake of eggs and the highest average intake of milk and dairy products were found in participants with high blood cholesterol (P < 0.05). The daily smokers were more likely to consume beans and nuts (P < 0.05). The lowest average intake of fruits and the highest average intake of tubers were found in participants with high normal blood pressure (P < 0.05).

Conclusion

Adherence to CFP in the high-risk population of NCDs appeared to be challenging. It is necessary to adopt dietary education campaign focusing on the high-risk population of NCDs to prevent or delay the occurrence of NCDs.

Nutritional Viewpoints on Eggs and Cholesterol

Although most current epidemiologic studies indicate no significant association between consuming one egg daily and blood cholesterol levels and cardiovascular risk, arguments still persist with a positive association. Since the diet is one of the most influential factors for this association, we illustrate characteristic features in Japanese people whose dietary pattern is distinct from that, for example, the US (United States) population. Available epidemiologic studies in healthy Japanese people show no association between consumption of one egg daily and blood cholesterol level, consistent with those observed in the US population. However, when consumption of major nutrients and food sources of cholesterol are compared to the US population, Japanese people may have an extra-reserve against the influence of eggs on cardiovascular risk markers, despite consuming relatively more eggs. Further discussion on the influence of nutrients contained in the egg and dietary pattern, including interaction with gut microbes, is necessary. In addition, special consideration at the personalized level is needed for judgment regarding dietary cholesterol not only for hypercholesterolemic patients but for hyper-responsive healthy persons. Although randomized controlled trials with long-term follow-up are required to evaluate the association between consumption of eggs and human health, available information, at least from the nutritional viewpoint, suggests that egg is a healthy and cost-efficient food worldwide.

Gender-specific association between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus among a middle-aged and elderly Chinese population: An observational study

ABSTRACT

Limited data are available regarding the association of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) with the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in China. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the gender-specific association between NAFLD and T2DM risk in a middle-aged and elderly Chinese population.This cross-sectional study was carried out in a group of 1492 Chinese adults (60.30% males) aged between 45 and 69 years old, in Hangzhou city, Zhejiang province who were attending their annual health check-up from June 2015 to December 2016 in the Medical Center for Physical Examination, Zhejiang Hospital. Face-to-face interviews were conducted using a written questionnaire. NAFLD was divided into none, mild, moderate/severe based on ultrasound examination. Logistic regression analyses were employed to determine the relationship between NAFLD and the risk of T2DM, with adjustment of potential confounding variables.Of the 1492 participants, 163 (10.92%) were diagnosed with T2DM. Educational level, smoking, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-hip ratio (WHR), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), fasting glucose (FG), triglycerides (TG), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), asparagine aminotransferase (AST)and the prevalence of T2DM were significantly higher in males than in females (P < .05). Besides, females had significantly higher levels of high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) (1.51 ± 0.37 vs 1.29 ± 0.42, P < .001) than males. Pearson bivariate correlation analysis indicated that FG was positively associated with weight, BMI, WC, WHR, SBP, DBP, TG, TC, ALT and AST in both males and females (P < .05). Besides, FG was inversely associated with HDL-C in females (P < .001). After adjusting for confounding variables, NAFLD was positively associated with the risk of T2DM, and the effect of NAFLD on T2DM was stronger in males (OR = 2.442, 95%CI: 1.003-3.757) than in females (OR = 1.814, 95%CI: 1.011-3.257).Our data showed that NAFLD was significantly associated with the risk of T2DM in middle-aged and elderly males than in females. Further prospective cohort studies are needed to determine the causal effect of NAFLD on T2DM.

[Association of nutritional patterns and arterial hypertension in Russia: does it exist?]

AIM

To evaluate nutritional patterns in patient with arterial hypertension (AH) compared to the control group without elevated blood pressure.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Retrospective search for unique records of the patients aged 1875 y.o. with complete data on usual nutrition with food frequency methods who had no mentions of diabetes mellitus, food intolerance or allergies, and history of major abdominal surgery, as well as signs of secondary reasons of AH. Nutritional patterns were assessed with the use of healthy eating pyramid principles. Ststistical analysis was performed with the use of SPSS 13.0 for Windows software (SPSS Inc., USA).

RESULTS

The data of 711 patients were available for the final analysis (595 of them in AH group). Both groups consumed lower compared to the recommended amounts of fruits, dairy and higher amounts of meat. Those with AH consumed larger amounts of vegetables (1.130.74 compared to the values of healthy eating pyramid vs 0.940.63 in the control group; p=0.004), fruits (0.800.66 vs 0.520.57; p=0.001), meat (1.851.05 vs 1.620.91; p=0.002) and fats (0.770.60 vs 0.490.55; p=0.001). On the other hand, there were lower rates of consumption of sugars, and confectionaries in the structure of nutritional patterns in patients with AH compared to the control group: (0.350.44 of the healthy eating pyramid in AH vs 1.930.98, in the control group; p=0.0001).

CONCLUSION

Nutritional patterns of patients with arterial hypertension significantly differ compared to the control group. The obtained data may be used for diet modification in patients with arterial hypertension.

Dietary patterns and their association with breast milk macronutrient composition among lactating women

BACKGROUD

Breast milk is the optimal food for infant growth and development. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between breast milk macronutrient composition with dietary pattern among lactating women.

METHODS

A total of 220 lactating women from 2011 to 2012 in Changsha, a city of south-central China, was recruited using a multi-stage sampling method. Breast milk was collected, and the protein, fat, lactose, total dry matter, and energy contents of breast milk were measured. A 24 h recall method on three consecutive days was used to collect the dietary information of lactating women and an exploratory factor analysis was performed was to identify dietary patterns. The association between the concentration of a breast milk component and dietary pattern was assessed using a multivariable linear regression model.

RESULTS

Three major dietary patterns were classified. Lactating women with dietary pattern 1 mainly ate fresh vegetables and fresh legumes. Those with dietary pattern 2 mainly ate red meat, cereals and eggs, and those with dietary pattern 3 mainly ate fungi and algae, dries legumes and soy milk. Pattern 2 was positively associated with the concentration of protein (B = 0.07, 95% CI 0.00, 0.15), total dry matter (B = 0.20, 95% CI 0.02, 0.38) and energy (B = 1.66, 95% CI 0.03, 3.30) in breast milk. Morever, lactation period was negatively associated with the protein and total dry matter concentrations and positively associated with lactose.

CONCLUSIONS

The results show the lactation period was an important factor affecting milk composition and a dietary pattern with high intake of red meat, cereals, and eggs was associated with higher protein, total dry matter, and energy contents in breast milk. These findings show that the dietary patterns of lactating women can affect breast milk macronutrient composition and provide a foundation for improving child health.
