Abstract
Objectives The Asia Working Group of Sarcopenia (AWGS) 2019 consensus proposed a new concept named "possible sarcopenia". The present study was to estimate the association between indoor air pollution by solid fuel usages for cooking and possible sarcopenia among middle-aged and older Chinese population. Methods A longitudinal cohort analysis was carried out using nationally representative data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). A total of 17,708 participants were recruited and followed up in the CHARLS. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate the effects of cooking fuel usages on the new onset of possible sarcopenia. Stratified analyses were performed according to gender and age, and sensitivity analyses were performed using the complete dataset. Results A total of 4,653 participants were included in the final cohort analysis. During the follow-up of 4 years (2011-2015), a total of 1,532 (32.92%) participants developed new-onset possible sarcopenia. Compared with clean fuel usages for cooking, solid fuel usages were associated with a higher risk of possible sarcopenia (HR = 1.37, 95% CI = 1.23-1.52, p-value < 0.001). After adjusting for potential confounders, there was a trend for association between solid fuel usages and an increased risk of possible sarcopenia. Stratified analyses by gender and age demonstrated a stronger association of the solid fuel usages with possible sarcopenia in the middle-aged female participants (Model 1: HR = 1.83, 95% CI = 1.24-2.69, p-value = 0.002; Model 2: HR = 1.65, 95% CI = 1.10-2.47, p-value = 0.016). Sensitivity analyses indicated that the results were robust. Conclusion Indoor air pollution from solid fuel usages for cooking was a modifiable risk factor for sarcopenia, especially in middle-aged female population. These findings provide a new prevention strategy to reduce the growing burden of sarcopenia, especially for middle-aged female individuals using solid fuels for cooking.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between serum lipids and sarcopenia remains unclear due to conflicting results in previous studies. OBJECTIVE To explore the associations and potential causality between serum lipids, including high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), triglycerides (TG), and total cholesterol (TC), and sarcopenia. METHODS Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were analysed using multivariable regression and restricted cubic splines (RCSs) to assess the associations between serum lipids and sarcopenia. Bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) was employed to investigate the causal relationships with sarcopenia-related traits such as appendicular lean mass (ALM), hand grip strength, and usual walking pace. RESULTS Serum HDL-C and TG levels were inversely associated with ALMBMI, with each 1-unit increase linked to a 0.13 % and 1.32 % decrease, respectively. Elevated TG, but not HDL-C, LDL-C, or TC levels, was significantly associated with an increased risk of sarcopenia (P for trend = 0.001). RCS analysis revealed a log-shaped dose-response relationship between TG and sarcopenia risk (P overall <0.001, P non-linear <0.001), with a cutoff value of 92.75 mg/dL. Genetically predicted HDL-C, LDL-C, and TG were associated with ALM. Conversely, ALM showed an inverse causal relationship with all four serum lipids. Additionally, genetically predicted usual walking pace influenced HDL-C and TG levels (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION The study reveals a nonlinear association between TG levels and sarcopenia risk, and a bidirectional association between lipid profiles and muscle mass, underscoring the need for further research to elucidate these mechanisms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recent studies have demonstrated that very high high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) level was paradoxically linked with higher risk of cardiovascular mortality, all-cause mortality, and several age-related diseases. However, whether very high HDL-C level is associated with a higher risk of sarcopenia in older adults remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the association between HDL-C level and the risk of developing sarcopenia and low grip strength over time in older adults. METHODS Participants were from the ongoing China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), which includes a nationally representative sample of adults aged ≥45 years and was performed from 2011 to 2020 with follow-ups every two to three years. The current study included 4031 participants aged ≥60 years. Muscle health-related data were collected in waves 2011, 2013, and 2015. Based on HDL-C level at baseline, participants were categorized into five groups: <35 mg/dl, 35-40 mg/dl, 40-60 mg/dl, 60-70 mg/dl and >70 mg/dl. The main outcomes were incident sarcopenia and incident low grip strength over follow-up. Low grip strength and sarcopenia were defined according to the 2019 Consensus by the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia. Cox proportional-hazard regression was performed to investigate the association between HDL-C level and the risk of developing sarcopenia and low grip strength in older adults. RESULTS The mean age of study sample was 67.3 (SD 6.1) years, and 49.6% were male. During an average 3.7-year follow-up, 409 (10.1%) participants developed sarcopenia and 771 (21.1%) developed low grip strength. Non-linear association was observed between HDL-C level and the hazard of developing sarcopenia and low grip strength. The multivariable model showed that compared to the reference group (40-60 mg/dl), older adults with very high HDL-C level (>70 mg/dl) had a significantly higher risk of developing sarcopenia (HR 1.69, 95% CI 1.28-2.23) and low grip strength (HR 1.23 95% CI 1.00-1.51). Stratified analyses by sex revealed similar association. CONCLUSIONS We present the first longitudinal evidence that very high HDL-C level was associated with a significantly higher risk of muscle strength decline and developing sarcopenia in older adults. It is essential to monitor the muscle health of older adults with very high HDL-C level in clinical practice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To investigate the association between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components with sarcopenia, and to explore the extent to which insulin resistance (IR) mediates this association, using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). METHODS We analyzed cross-sectional data from 15,779 adults in the NHANES from 1999 to 2006 and 2011-2018. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to determine the odds ratios (ORs) between MetS, its components, the number of MetS components, and sarcopenia. Mediation analysis was performed to explore the role of the homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) in MetS and its components-induced sarcopenia. RESULT In the fully adjusted model, MetS increased the prevalence of sarcopenia by 1.96-fold (95% CI: 1.73-2.22). Among the individual components, central obesity, hypertension, and hyperglycemia were associated with an increased prevalence of sarcopenia. Sarcopenia prevalence also increased linearly with the number of MetS components, with the highest prevalence observed in the presence of all five components (OR: 3.80, 95% CI: 2.79-5.16). Sex-stratified analysis showed that the prevalence of MetS for sarcopenia was higher in males than females. The mediating effects of HOMA-IR on the association between MetS and its components (central obesity, hypertension, and hyperglycemia) with sarcopenia were significant, with mediation effects of 51.7%, 30.7%, 33.2%, and 79.1%, respectively. There was no significant direct association between hyperglycemia and sarcopenia beyond the HOMA-IR pathway. CONCLUSION MetS and its individual components, excluding hypertriglyceridemia and low high density lipoprotein cholesterol, were associated with a higher prevalence of sarcopenia, especially in males. This association was partially or fully mediated by IR.

Abstract
BACKGROUND As populations live longer, there is a progressive increase in chronic degenerative diseases, particularly those related to the musculoskeletal system. Sarcopenia is characterized by loss of skeletal muscle mass, muscle strength, and loss of physical function. It is a common disease in older adults associated with various adverse health outcomes. There is a lack of bioindicators to screen for sarcopenia. Albumin and lymphocyte counts are commonly used to assess the degree of malnutrition, and blood routine, lipids, and thyroid function are relatively easy to obtain as part of a routine physical examination. Therefore, finding blood markers that can screen for sarcopenia is essential. Our primary aim was to explore whether the bioindicators of body composition, lymphocytes, albumin, lipids, and thyroid hormones are associated with sarcopenia, and a secondary aim was to investigate changes in these indicators after an intensive lifestyle intervention preliminarily. METHODS 60 subjects were selected from Runda and Bailian community health centers in Suzhou, China. They underwent body composition analysis and tested lymphocyte, albumin, lipid, and thyroid hormone levels. The 30 sarcopenia subjects underwent a 3-month intensive lifestyle intervention program. At the end of the intervention, we rechecked the bioindicators. Statistical analyses were performed in IBM SPSS v26.0. RESULTS The blood indices of sarcopenia subjects were generally lower in albumin, non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C), and free triiodothyronine (FT3). Body mass index (BMI)(r = 0.6266, p < 0.0001), fat-free mass (r = 0.8110, p < 0.0001), basal metabolism (r = 0.7782, p < 0.0001), and fat mass (r = 0.3916, p = 0.0020) were positively correlated with appendicular skeletal muscle index (ASMI). Higher BMI and FT3 were associated with lower odds of sarcopenia, while higher fat mass was associated with higher odds of sarcopenia. After a 3-month intensive intervention, sarcopenia subjects had a significant increase in BMI, ASMI, lymphocyte, and albumin levels, and an increase in FT3, but with a non-significant difference (p = 0.342). CONCLUSIONS Low BMI, FT3, and high fat mass were associated with sarcopenia. Intensive lifestyle intervention can significantly improve ASMI, BMI, lymphocytes, albumin, and FT3 in sarcopenia subjects, which is favorable for delaying the progression of sarcopenia. Abstract
Background While sarcopenia has been found to be associated with increased risks of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), evidence exploring sex-related differences remains insufficient. This study aimed to investigate the differences in how often sarcopenia occurs in each sex, as determined by skeletal muscle area (SMA) in chest CT images, and its association with CVD common risk factors. Methods This cross-sectional study involved 1,340 inpatients from the Department of Geriatrics of Renji Hospital, affiliated to Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine. Data on age, sex, body mass index (BMI), smoking status, disease history, and clinical parameters were collected. Sarcopenia was defined using chest CT images with a cut-off value of T12-SMA/height2 <25.75 cm2/m2 in male patients and <20.16 cm2/m2 in female patients. Cardiovascular risk was assessed using the Framingham risk score (FRS). The association between T12-SMA/height2-defined sarcopenia and CVD risk factors by sex was evaluated using a multivariate logistic regression analysis. Results The overall prevalence of T12-SMA/height2-defined sarcopenia (<25.75 cm2/m2 for male patients, <20.16 cm2/m2 for female patients) was 54.03%, with 48.09% in male patients and 63.19% in female patients. The proportion of male patients with high CVD risk was greater than that of female patients. The multivariate analysis revealed that T12-SMA/height2-defined sarcopenia was independently associated with age (in male patients only), systolic blood pressure (SBP), cholesterol, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) among the six FRS cardiovascular risk indices. Conclusion Our results suggest that T12-SMA/height2-defined sarcopenia was more prevalent in male patients than in female patients. Sarcopenia was associated with higher levels of SBP and HDL-C and lower levels of cholesterol. Increasing age had a more significant effect on CVD risk in male patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The ratio between non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (NHHR) is a reliable marker for assessing the risk linked to lipid metabolism disorders. Sarcopenia, characterized by age-related loss of muscle mass and strength/function, includes the assessment of muscle mass, muscle strength, and muscle-specific strength. However, research into NHHR's relationship with low muscle mass risk remains unexplored. METHODS Our study utilized a cross-sectional approach, examining data derived from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2011 to 2018. Through multivariable linear and logistic regression, we investigated the relationships of the NHHR with muscle mass and low muscle mass. We visualized the results using smoothing curves and assessed threshold effects. We also performed various subgroup and sensitivity analyses. RESULTS This research encompassed 9,012 participants and demonstrated significant nonlinear associations between NHHR and ALMBMI or low muscle mass risk in a generalized additive model (GAM), pinpointing critical NHHR values (3.328 and 3.367) where changes in NHHR significantly impacted ALMBMI and low muscle mass risk. CONCLUSIONS The NHHR demonstrates a significant association with an increased risk of low muscle mass among middle-aged Americans. This ratio has potential as a predictive marker for low muscle mass. Further exploration of NHHR is expected to aid in advancing preventive and therapeutic measures for this condition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cancer and sarcopenia are both closely related to lipid metabolism, but the relationship between lipid metabolism and patients with cancer and sarcopenia has not been thoroughly studied. The non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (NHHR) is a reliable measure of lipid metabolism. The purpose of this study was to determine the possible relationship between the NHHR and sarcopenia in individuals with cancer. METHODS Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database for individuals with cancer, with and without sarcopenia was analyzed using weighted multiple regression equations, weighted regression cubic spline (RCS) analysis, and weighted subgroup analysis. RESULTS In total, 1,602 individuals with cancer were included, of whom 17.1% had sarcopenia. In Adjusted Model 2, the occurrence of sarcopenia was found to be significantly associated with a higher NHHR in cancer (95% confidence interval [CI]:1.01-1.39, P = 0.036). Individuals with high a NHHR had a 2.09-fold higher risk of developing sarcopenia in comparison to those with a low NHHR (95% CI:1.12-3.92, P = 0.022). RCS analysis further identified a U-shaped non-linear relationship between females with cancer and the muscle index. Subgroup analysis indicated that sex was a significant stratifying factor, whereas age, race, marital status, smoking and drinking habits, and history of cardiovascular disease, arthritis, hypertension, and diabetes had no significant impact. CONCLUSION From the perspective of lipid metabolism, the NHHR may serve as an indicator for monitoring and preventing the occurrence of sarcopenia in individuals with cancer, particularly for females with cancer who appear to have greater sensitivity.

Abstract
Background Growing evidence indicates that there is a close relationship between type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and sarcopenia, and T2DM patients are often accompanied by obesity. However, research exploring the connection between body fat percentage (BFP) and sarcopenia is currently limited. Methods This was a cross-sectional study that included 676 patients with T2DM over 50 years old. The appendicular skeletal muscle mass index (ASMI), handgrip strength, and 5-time chair stand test (5-TCST) were measured, and sarcopenia was diagnosed according to the Asian Working Group on Sarcopenia (AWGS). Spearman's coefficient was used to evaluate the correlation of BFP and body mass index (BMI) with the diagnostic elements of sarcopenia, and BFP and other relevant covariates were included in the binary logistic regression model. The subgroup performed an interaction test for statistically significant population baseline information. Results The prevalence of sarcopenia was 18.0% in males and 11.6% in females. Spearman correlation analysis showed that BFP was positively correlated with ASMI in women (R=0.107, P=0.029), but not in men. BFP was negatively correlated with grip strength (male: R= -0.187, P=0.003; female: R=-0.108, P=0.029). There was a positive correlation between BFP and 5-TCST (male: R=0.199, P=0.001; female: R=0.144, P=0.003). After adjusting for confounding factors, BFP was an independent risk factor for sarcopenia (men, OR: 1.33, 95% CI: 1.15-1.54; women, OR: 1.26, 95% CI: 1.13-1.41). This correlation was generally consistent, as demonstrated in further subgroup analyses. Conclusion High BFP was significantly associated with sarcopenia risk, and this association was independent of gender, age, and BMI.

Abstract
Background and Objective: This study aimed to identify the incidence of sarcopenia and disease risk factors in Korean adults and to provide data for sarcopenia prevention. Materials and Methods: Based on the Korea National Health and Nutrition Survey, 2008-2011, we selected 14,185 adults over the age of 20 who participated in sarcopenia diagnostic tests and health surveys. We analyzed sarcopenia risk factors using complex sample multi-logistic regression analysis. Results: The prevalence of sarcopenia in Korea was 31.3%, with 20.2% in men and 40.4% in women. In men, there was a higher risk of sarcopenia in those of older age, without a spouse, with a low body mass index (BMI), who never engage in resistance exercise, or who do mid-level intensity resistance exercises. In women, sarcopenia risk was higher in those in their 20s compared to those in their 60s, and risk factors included a low BMI, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and waist circumference measurements, alcohol consumption, aerobic exercise, and resistance exercise. Conclusions: Interventions and lifestyle improvements will help prevent the onset of sarcopenia in elderly men and young women with risk factors such as a low BMI.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In this study, we investigated the relationship between sarcopenia and fatty liver in middle-aged and elderly patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) to provide a theoretical foundation for the prevention and treatment of sarcopenia. METHODS A total of 282 patients diagnosed with T2DM aged 50 and older and were admitted to the Endocrinology Department of Xin Medical University First Affiliated Hospital between December 2021 and February 2023, were selected. Body mass index (BMI), and limb and trunk muscle mass of the patients were measured, and data were collected. Patients were grouped based on the sarcopenia diagnostic criteria. All study participants underwent the same physical examinations and laboratory tests. The relationship between the onset of sarcopenia and fatty liver in middle-aged and elderly patients diagnosed with T2DM was then investigated using statistical analysis. RESULTS Comparing the sarcopenia group to the non-sarcopenia group revealed statistically significant variations in gender, BMI, fatty liver prevalence rate, uric acid (UA), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), blood glucose, blood lipid associated indicators, and limb skeletal muscle content. There were, however, no statistically significant differences in age, disease duration, hypertension, smoking, or alcohol intake. There was a positive correlation between BMI, UA, fasting c-peptide, and Appendicular Skeletal Muscle Index (ASMI). Higher levels of BMI, ASMI, and UA were identified as protective variables against sarcopenia by multifactorial logistic regression analysis. CONCLUSION Higher levels of BMI, ASMI, and UA can greatly reduce skeletal muscle atrophy in patients with T2DM. Patients with a fatty liver may be less vulnerable to sarcopenia. There is little evidence, however, that a fatty liver works as a preventive factor against sarcopenia.

Abstract
Sarcopenia, a disease recognized by the World Health Organization, has posed a great challenge to the world in the current aging society. The vital role of the gut microbiome through the gut-muscle axis in sarcopenia is increasingly recognized. However, the working mechanisms by which the gut microbiota functions have not been fully explored in the multi-omics field. Here, we designed a cross-sectional study that recruited patients (n = 32) with sarcopenia and healthy old adults (n = 31). Diagnosis of sarcopenia was based on the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) in 2019 criteria. Muscle mass was represented by appendicular skeletal muscle mass measured by using direct segmental multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance and muscle strength was evaluated using the handgrip strength. The Short Physical Performance Battery, the 5-time Chair Stand Test, and the 4-metre Walk Test were used to assess physical performance. Shotgun metagenomic sequencing was used to profile the gut microbiome in order to identify its construction and function. Metabolome based on untargeted metabolomics was applied to describe the features and structure of fecal metabolites. In clinical indexes including triglycerides and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, we noted a significant decrease in triglycerides (TG) and a significant increase in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) in patients with sarcopenia. Appendicular skeletal muscle mass of patients with sarcopenia was lower than the health group. Based on intestinal metagenomic and fecal metabolomic profiles, we found that the gut microbiome and metabolome were disturbed in patients with sarcopenia, with significant decreases in bacteria such as Bifidobacterium longum, Bifidobacterium pseudocatenulatum, and Bifidobacterium adolescentis, as well as metabolites such as shikimic acid. Also, we plotted supervised classification models at the species level of gut bacteria (AUC = 70.83-88.33) and metabolites (AUC = 92.23-98.33) based on machine learning, respectively. Based on the gut-muscle axis network, a potential mechanism is proposed along the gut microbiome - key metabolites - clinical index, that Phascolarctobacterium faecium affects appendicular skeletal muscle mass, calf circumference, handgrip strength, and BMI via Shikimic acid metabolites. This study elucidates the potential mechanisms by which the gut microbiome influences the progress of sarcopenia through metabolites and provides a meaningful theoretical foundation for reference in the diagnosis and treatment of sarcopenia.

Abstract
Aim This study aims to explore the association between triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG/HDL-C) ratio and relative grip strength in older adults in order to provide some references for the prevention and control of sarcopenia. Methods For this cross-sectional study, the demographic and clinical data of 1,404 individuals aged ≥60 years old were extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database in 2011-2014. The definition of relative grip strength was the sum of the largest reading from each hand/body mass index (BMI) ratio. We used weighted univariate linear regression and stepwise regression analysis to screen the covariates. Weighted univariate and multivariate linear regression analyses were used to explore the association between the TG/HDL-C ratio and the relative grip strength. We also explored this relationship in subgroups of gender, diabetes mellitus (DM), cardiovascular disease (CVD), and arthritis. The evaluation index was β with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results A total of 1,306 older adults were eligible. After adjusting for the covariates including age, gender, race, marital status, physical activity, DM, CVD, arthritis, and chronic kidney disease (CKD), we found that the TG/HDL-C ratio was negatively linked to the relative grip strength (all p < 0.05). Furthermore, the increased TG/HDL-C ratio was also related to the decreased relative grip strength in those who were women, not having DM, and having CVD (all p < 0.05). Conclusion With the increase in the TG/HDL-C ratio, the relative grip strength of older adults decreased significantly, indicating that the TG/HDL-C ratio could be closely monitored in the older adult population and may be associated with the prevention and control of sarcopenia.

Abstract
Purpose To propose predictive models for absolute muscle strength (AMS) of elderly people with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM2) in primary health care. Patients and Methods The cross-sectional study was conducted with 138 elderly diabetics. The AMS was measured by a JAMAR® hydraulic handgrip dynamometer, determined by the sum of both hands. The following indices were evaluated: waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), body mass index (BMI), Lipid Accumulation Product (LAP), Triglyceride/High Density Lipoprotein (TG/HDL) ratio and platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR). Multiple linear regression was used in the statistical analysis. Results The final regression model indicated 66.4% (R²=0.66) of the variation in AMS. WHtR decreased AMS by 41.1% (β = -0.19; t = -3.70; p < 0.001), while PLR by 11.3% (β = -0.12; t = -2.36; p = 0.020). Male sex increased AMS by 10.6% (β = 0.32; t = 4.16; p < 0.001), and lean mass (LM) by 0.89% (β = 0.46; t = 6.03; p < 0.001). Conclusion WHtR and PLR predicted a decrease, while male sex and LM predicted an increase in AMS. It is suggested that these markers be used as screening measures for variation in AMS in older adults with DM2. These results have relevant practical application in primary health care since the markers are easy to use.

Abstract
An association between the loss of skeletal muscle mass and obesity in the geriatric population has been identified as a disease known as sarcopenic obesity. Therefore, therapeutic/preventive interventions are needed to ameliorate sarcopenia. The present study investigates the effect of azilsartan (AZL) on skeletal muscle loss in High-Fat Diet (HFD)-induced sarcopenic obese (SO) rats. Four- and fourteen-months male Sprague Dawley rats were used and randomized in control and azilsartan treatment. 14 months animals were fed with HFD for four months and labeled as HFD-fed SO rats. Young & old rats received 0.5% carboxymethyl cellulose as a vehicle/AZL (8 mg/kg, per oral) treatment for six weeks. Grip strength and body composition analysis were performed after the last dose of AZL. Serum and gastrocnemius (GN)muscles were collected after animal sacrifice. AZL treatment significantly increased lean muscle mass, grip strength, myofibrillar protein, and antioxidant (superoxide dismutase & nitric oxide) levels in SO rats. AZL also restored the muscle biomarkers (creatine kinase, myostatin & testosterone), and insulin levels. AZL improves cellular, and ultracellular muscle structure and prevents type I to type II myofiber transitions in SO rats. Further, immunohistochemistry results showed increased expressions of pAkt and reduced expression of MuRF-1 and TNF-α exhibiting that AZL intervention could decrease protein degradation in SO rats. In conclusion, present results showed that AZL significantly increased lean mass, and restored muscle biomarkers, and muscle architecture. Taken together, the aforementioned findings suggest that azilsartan could be a possible therapeutic approach to reduce muscle wasting in sarcopenic obesity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Previous studies investigating the association between the serum triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG/HDL-C) ratio and the occurrence of sarcopenia in different populations have yielded inconsistent results. This study aimed to investigate the potential association between TG/HDL-C ratio and sarcopenia among elderly Chinese patients with diabetes. DESIGN A secondary data analysis. SETTING This was a secondary analysis of data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. PARTICIPANTS In this study, 752 elderly individuals with diabetes were included after excluding individuals aged <60 years old, those with missing data for the assessment of sarcopenia and missing measurements for plasma glucose or glycated haemoglobin. OUTCOME MEASURES The primary information included TG/HDL-C ratio, muscle strength, physical performance, muscle mass and covariables. The association between TG/HDL-C ratio and sarcopenia was assessed using ordinal logistic regression and linear regression analysis. RESULTS On multivariate ordinal logistic regression, among male patients, compared with those with the lowest quartile of TG/HDL-C ratio (≤1.41), those with the highest quartile (>4.71) had a significantly lower risk of more severe sarcopenia (OR 0.24, 95% CI 0.10 to 0.54). Similarly, among female patients, compared with those with the lowest quartile of TG/HDL-C ratio (≤2.07), those with the highest quartile (>5.61) had a significantly lower risk of more severe sarcopenia (OR 0.17, 95% CI 0.07 to 0.44). In multivariate linear regression, male patients with the highest quartile of TG/HDL-C ratio (β=0.36, 95% CI 0.20 to 0.51) had higher muscle mass than those with the lowest quartile. Similarly, female patients with the highest quartile of TG/HDL-C ratio (β=0.31, 95% CI 0.10 to 0.51) had higher muscle mass than those with the lowest quartile. CONCLUSIONS There was a negative association between TG/HDL-C ratio categorised by quartile and sarcopenia, which indicates that a higher TG/HDL-C ratio may be related to better muscle status.

Abstract
Background We aimed to retrospectively analyze the level of appendicular skeletal muscle mass index (ASMI) in adult males and its influencing factors for early screening and intervention of sarcopenia. Methods From January 2020 to December 2021, adult male medical examiners from the Health Management Center of the Affiliated Hospital of North Sichuan Medical College, Chengdu City, China were selected as the research subjects. The ASMI level was measured by bioelectrical impedance (BIA) method. The subjects were divided into four groups according to the quartiles of ASMI level, the levels of related indicators between the groups were compared, and the related factors affecting the ASMI level were analyzed. Results The detection rate of sarcopenia was about 1.09% (78/7187). One-way ANOVA or nonparametric test results showed that age, BMI, WHR, SBP, DBP, FPG, HbA1c, AST, ALT, GGT, Cr, UA, TG, TC, HDLC, LDL-C and FT3 levels were significantly different among the four ASMI groups (P<0.05). ASMI was positively correlated with BMI, WHR, SBP, DBP, FPG, HbA1c, AST, ALT, GGT, Cr, UA, TG, TC, LDL-C, FT3, and TSH (all P<0.05); negatively correlated with age and HDL-C (all P<0.05). Age, WHR and TG were independent risk factors for ASMI level, and BMI was an independent protective factor for ASMI level. Conclusion The ASMI level in healthy adult males is related to age, obesity, blood pressure, glucose and lipid metabolism disorder, inflammation and thyroid hormone, among which age, BMI, WHR and TG are independent influencing factors of ASMI level.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Muscular dystrophies (MDs) are characterized by chronic muscle wasting but also poorly understood metabolic co-morbidities. We have recently shown that Duchenne MD (DMD) patients, dogs and asymptomatic carriers are affected by a new form of dyslipidemia that may exacerbate muscle damage. OBJECTIVE We aimed to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis for evidence that other types of MDs are associated with dyslipidemia compared to healthy controls. METHODS Search was conducted using MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials for reports that compare plasma/serum lipids from MD patients and controls, and meta-analysis of cross-sectional studies quantifying total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein, low density lipoprotein and triglycerides was performed. RESULTS Out of 749 studies, 17 met our inclusion criteria for meta-analysis. 14 of the 17 studies (82% ) included investigated myotonic dystrophy (DM); other studies were on pseudohypertrophic MD (PMD) or DMD. As a whole, MD individuals had significantly higher levels of circulating total cholesterol (Hedges' g with 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.80 [0.03 - 1.56]; p = 0.04) and triglycerides (Hedges' g with 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.28[0.63 - 3.92]; p = 0.01) compared to controls. Meta-regression analysis showed the percentage of male gender was significantly associated with the difference in total cholesterol (beta = 0.05; 95% CI, - 0.02 to 0.11; p = 0.043) and high-density lipoprotein (beta = - 9.38; 95% CI, - 16.26 to - 2.50; p = 0.028). CONCLUSIONS MD is associated with significantly higher circulating levels of total cholesterol and triglycerides. However, caution on the interpretation of these findings is warranted and future longitudinal research is required to better understand this relationship.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dynapenia embraces clinical significance and predictive value separated from skeletal muscle loss among cirrhosis. Moreover, alterations in lipid levels may impact muscle function. It has yet to elucidate the relationship between lipid profiles and muscle strength weakness. We sought to explore which lipid metabolism indicator could be useful to identify patients with dynapenia in daily practice. METHODS A retrospective observational cohort study enrolling 262 cirrhotic patients. Analysis of the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was performed to determine the discriminatory cutoff for dynapenia. Multivariate logistic regression was conducted to assess the association between total cholesterol (TC) and dynapenia. Also, we established a model based on the classification and regression tree method. RESULTS ROC implicated a cutoff of TC ≤ 3.37 mmol/L to identify dynapenia. Patients with TC ≤ 3.37 mmol/L showed significantly lower handgrip strength (HGS; 20.0 vs. 24.7 kg, P = 0.003), lower hemoglobin, lower platelet, lower white blood cell count, lower sodium and higher prothrombin-international normalized ratio. A positive correlation was found between TC and HGS values ( r = 0.1860, P = 0.003). TC remained a significant association with dynapenia after controlling for variables including age, sex, BMI, and the presence of ascites. The decision tree incorporating TC, BMI, and age had a sensitivity of 71.4%, specificity of 64.9%, and an area under ROC of 0.681. CONCLUSION TC ≤ 3.37 mmol/L was significantly associated with the presence of dynapenia. Assessing TC may be helpful for identifying dynapenic patients with cirrhosis in the health care or hospital setting.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Triglyceride/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG/HDL-C) ratio is correlated with metabolic diseases. The prevalence of sarcopenia is significantly higher in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients compared with healthy controls. The purpose of our study is to evaluate the correlation of TG/HDL-C ratio with muscle mass in T2DM patients. METHOD Our study consists of 1048 T2DM inpatients recruited from the department of endocrinology. Skeletal muscle index (SMI) was detected with a dual energy X-ray absorptiometry method. Low muscle mass was diagnosed using the criteria of SMI less than 7.0 kg/m2 (in male subjects) or 5.4 kg/m2 (in female subjects). RESULT The prevalence of low muscle mass was 20.9% and 14.5% in male and female groups respectively. SMI was correlated with TG/HDL ratio after adjustment for age, duration of diabetes, diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and HbA1c in male subgroup. In female subgroup, SMI was associated with TG/HDL ratio after adjustment for age and DBP. CONCLUSION Higher TG/HDL-C ratio is correlated with muscle mass in T2DM patients.

Abstract
Objectives The aim of the present study was to explore the prevalence and risk factors of sarcopenia without obesity (S) and sarcopenic obesity (SO) among community-dwelling older people in the Chongming District of Shanghai, China, according to the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) 2019 Consensus as the diagnostic criteria of sarcopenia. Methods In this cross-sectional study, a total of 1,407 subjects aged ≥65 years were included, where the mean age of the subjects was 71.91 ± 5.59 years and their mean body mass index (BMI) was 24.65 ± 3.32 kg/m2. According to the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) 2019 Consensus, sarcopenia was defined as a low appendicular skeletal muscle mass index (≤7.0 kg/m2 in males and ≤5.7 kg/m2 in females), decreased handgrip strength (<28.0 kg in males and <18.0 kg in females), and/or low gait speed (<1.0 m/s) or poor 5-time chair stand test (5CST) (≥12s). The SO met both the diagnostic criteria for sarcopenia and obesity, meanwhile obesity was defined as an increased percentage of body fat (PBF) (≥25% in males and ≥35% in females). Univariate and multiple logistic regression analyses were performed to explore the risk factors of both S and SO. Results The prevalence of S and SO was 9.74% (M: 9.29%, F: 10.05%) and 9.95% (M: 13.94%, F: 7.14%). Lower BMI (OR = 0.136, 95% CI: 0.054-0.340, p < 0.001), lower hip circumference (OR = 0.858, 95% CI: 0.816-0.903, p < 0.001), farming (OR = 1.632, 95% CI: 1.053-2.530, p = 0.028), higher high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) level (OR = 2.235, 95% CI: 1.484-3.367, p < 0.001), and a sleep duration <7 h (OR = 0.561, 95% CI: 0.346-0.909, p = 0.019) were risk factors for S. While aging (70-74 y, OR = 1.923, 95% CI: 1.122-3.295, p = 0.017; 75-79 y, OR = 3.185, 95% CI: 1.816-5.585, p < 0.001; ≥80 y, OR = 7.192, 95% CI: 4.133-12.513, p < 0.001), male (OR = 1.981, 95% CI: 1.351-2.904, p < 0.001), higher BMI (OR = 4.865, 95% CI: 1.089-21.736, p = 0.038), higher monocyte level (OR = 4.203, 95% CI: 1.340-13.181, p = 0.014), and a sleep duration >9 h (OR = 1.881, 95% CI: 1.117-3.166, p = 0.017) were risk factors for SO. Conclusion Our study showed the high prevalence of S and SO among community-dwelling older people in the Chongming District. The SO was more prevalent in males. Behavioral factors and lifestyle (such as farming and sleep duration) were associated more with the development of S, while age and male gender were associated more with the development of SO.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sarcopenia is an important comorbidity in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). The ultrasound (US) assessment has all the advantages of being used in primary care to assess muscle quantity and quality. Some biomarkers could be indicative of muscle mass loss. AIMS To describe the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of the quadriceps femoris assessed by US in older adults with HFpEF and to assess the relationship of the blood and urinary biomarkers, the polypharmacy and comorbidities with US outcomes in older adults with HFpEF. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted. 76 older adults with HFpEF were included. The quadriceps femoris muscle thickness (MT, cm), the subcutaneous fat tissue thickness (FT, cm), the muscle echo intensity (MEI) and the subcutaneous fat tissue echo intensity (FEI) were assessed by US in a non-contraction (non-con) and contraction (con) situations. Polypharmacy, comorbidities, blood and urine biomarkers were also collected. RESULTS The carbohydrate antigen 125 (CA-125), the folic acid and the urine creatinine shared the 86.6% variance in the non-con MT, adjusted by age, sex and body mass index (BMI). The folic acid shared the 38.5% of the variance in the con MT, adjusted by age, sex and BMI. The glycosylated haemoglobin explained the 39.6% variance in the non-con MEI, adjusted by age, sex and BMI. The chlorine (Cl-) explained the 40.2% of the variance in the non-con FT, adjusted by age, sex and BMI. The polypharmacy and the folic acid explained the 37.9% of variance in the non-con FEI, while the polypharmacy and the thyrotropin (TSH) shared the 44.4% of variance in the con FEI, both adjusted by age, sex and BMI. No comorbidities, polypharmacy, or blood and urinary biomarkers could explain the con MEI and the con FT variance. CONCLUSIONS Blood and urinary biomarkers obtained in routine analyses could help clinicians detect US outcome changes in older adults with HFpEF and identify a worsening of sarcopenia. Abstract
Sarcopenia is generally an age-related condition that directly impacts the quality of life. It is also related to chronic diseases such as metabolic dysfunction associated with diabetes and obesity. This means that everyone will be vulnerable to sarcopenia at some point in their life. Research to find the precise molecular mechanisms implicated in this condition can increase knowledge for the better prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of sarcopenia. Our work gathered the most recent research regarding inflammation in sarcopenia and new therapeutic agents proposed to target its consequences in pyroptosis and cellular senescence. Finally, we compared dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and ultrasound (US) as imaging techniques to diagnose and follow up on sarcopenia, indicating their respective advantages and disadvantages. Our goal is for the scientific evidence presented here to help guide future research to understand the molecular mechanisms involved in sarcopenia, new treatment strategies, and their translation into clinical practice.
