Abstract
ABSTRACT Brain age predicted differences (brain-PAD: predicted brain age minus chronological age) have been reported to be significantly larger for individuals with chronic pain compared with those without. However, a debate remains after one article showed no significant differences. Using Gaussian Process Regression, an article provides evidence that these negative results might owe to the use of mixed samples by reporting a differential effect of chronic pain on brain-PAD across pain types. However, some remaining methodological issues regarding training sample size and sex-specific effects should be tackled before settling this controversy. Here, we explored differences in brain-PAD between musculoskeletal pain types and controls using a novel convolutional neural network for predicting brain-PADs, ie, DeepBrainNet. Based on a very large, multi-institutional, and heterogeneous training sample and requiring less magnetic resonance imaging preprocessing than other methods for brain age prediction, DeepBrainNet offers robust and reproducible brain-PADs, possibly highly sensitive to neuropathology. Controlling for scanner-related variability, we used a large sample (n = 660) with different scanners, ages (19-83 years), and musculoskeletal pain types (chronic low back [CBP] and osteoarthritis [OA] pain). Irrespective of sex, brain-PAD of OA pain participants was ∼3 to 4.7 years higher than that of CBP and controls, whereas brain-PAD did not significantly differ among controls and CBP. Moreover, brain-PAD was significantly related to multiple variables underlying the multidimensional pain experience. This comprehensive work adds evidence of pain type-specific effects of chronic pain on brain age. This could help in the clarification of the debate around possible relationships between brain aging mechanisms and pain.

Abstract
Resumo Objetivo analisar associações diretas e indiretas entre autoavaliação de saúde, indicadores objetivos de saúde e neuroticismo em idosos Método Os dados foram extraídos dos registros de seguimento (2016-2017) do Estudo da Fragilidade em Idosos Brasileiros (Estudo FIBRA), de base populacional, sobre fragilidade e fatores associados na velhice. Trezentos e noventa e sete indivíduos com idade a partir de 73 anos no seguimento responderam a um item sobre autoavaliação de saúde. Polimedicação, dor crônica e multimorbidade foram autorrelatadas, fadiga foi mensurada pela CES-D, depressão pela EDG e neuroticismo pelo inventário NEO-PI-R. Foi realizada análise de caminhos, para verificar associações diretas e indiretas entre autoavaliação de saúde, indicadores objetivos de saúde e neuroticismo. Resultados Relações mais robustas foram observadas entre sexo e multimorbidade, depressão e neuroticismo, e neuroticismo e autoavaliação de saúde. Destaca-se que neuroticismo mediou a relação entre idade, dor crônica, multimorbidade e depressão com autoavaliação de saúde. Conclusão O neuroticismo é um importante mediador da relação entre autoavaliação de saúde e indicadores objetivos de saúde. Trabalhos longitudinais são necessários para explicar as relações observadas.

Abstract
Impaired physical functioning is one of the most critical consequences associated with fibromyalgia, especially when there is comorbid obesity. Psychological factors are known to contribute to perceived (i.e., subjective) physical functioning. However, physical function is a multidimensional concept encompassing both subjective and objective functioning. The contribution of psychological factors to performance-based (i.e., objective) functioning is unclear. This study aims to investigate the contribution of pain catastrophizing and pain acceptance to both self-reported and performance-based physical functioning. In this cross-sectional study, 160 participants completed self-report measures of pain catastrophizing, pain acceptance, and pain severity. A self-report measure and a performance-based test were used to assess physical functioning. Higher pain catastrophizing and lower pain acceptance were associated with poorer physical functioning at both self-reported and performance-based levels. Our results are consistent with previous evidence on the association between pain catastrophizing and pain acceptance with self-reported physical functioning. This study contributes to the current literature by providing novel insights into the role of psychological factors in performance-based physical functioning. Multidisciplinary interventions that address pain catastrophizing and pain acceptance are recommended and might be effective to improve both perceived and performance-based functioning in women with FM and obesity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Chronic pain is theoretically conceptualized from a biopsychosocial perspective. However, research into chronic pain still tends to focus on isolated, biological, psychological, or social variables. Simultaneous examination of these variables in the prediction of outcomes is important because communalities between predictors exist. Examination of unique contributions might help guide research and interventions in a more effective way. METHODS The participants were 114 individuals with chronic pain (mean age=58.81, SD=11.85; 58.8% women and 41.2% men) who responded to demographics (age and sex), pain characteristics (duration and sensory qualities), psychological (catastrophizing and perceived injustice), and social (marital adjustment) measures. Multivariate analyses were conducted to investigate their unique contributions to pain-related health variables pain severity, pain interference, disability, anxiety, and depressive symptoms. RESULTS Bivariate analyses evidenced significant associations between pain sensory qualities, catastrophizing, perceived injustice, and all health variables. In multivariate analyses, pain sensory qualities were associated with pain severity (β=0.10; 95% confidence interval [CI]=0.05, 0.14; t=4.28, P<0.001), while perceived injustice was associated with pain interference (β=0.08; 95% CI=0.03, 0.12; t=3.59, P<0.001), disability (β=0.25; 95% CI=0.08, 0.42; t=2.92, P=0.004), anxiety (β=0.18; 95% CI=0.08, 0.27; t=3.65, P<0.001), and depressive symptoms (β=0.14; 95% CI=0.05, 0.23; t=2.92, P=0.004). Age, sex, pain duration, and marital adjustment were not associated with health variables either in bivariate or in multivariate analyses (all P>0.010). DISCUSSION As expected, communalities between biopsychosocial variables exist, which resulted in a reduced number of unique contributions in multivariate analyses. Perceived injustice emerged as a unique contributor to variables, which points to this psychological construct as a potentially important therapeutic target in multidisciplinary treatment of pain.

Abstract
Chronic pain is a health problem that significantly influences patients' lives, causing functional, social, socioeconomic, and emotional changes that impact quality of life (QoL). The aim of this study was to evaluate which variables (e.g., psychological morbidity, illness representations, pain, and coping) contribute to QoL and to analyse the moderating role of illness- and wellness-focused coping in the relationship between pain interference and Qol, in chronic pain patients. A sociodemographic and clinical questionnaire, the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire, the Pain Catastrophizing Scale, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, the Chronic Pain Coping Inventory, the Short Form Health Survey, and the Brief Pain Inventory were completed by 103 patients with chronic pain. Greater use of wellness-focused coping and being professionally active were associated with better physical QoL. Cognitive representations and illness-focused coping contributed to physical QoL, and psychological morbidity contributed to mental QoL. Illness-focused coping and wellness-focused coping moderated the relationship between pain interference and physical QoL, but not with mental QoL. Since pain interference was positively related to psychological morbidity, and the latter was negatively related to QoL, it is extremely important to evaluate and promote patients' coping strategies that are focused on well-being to improve QoL. Results from this study underline the relevance of a multidisciplinary approach to chronic pain and the need to account for psychological morbidity and coping strategies in intervention programs to promote QoL in chronic pain patients.

Abstract
Objectives The cardinal symptom of burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is long-lasting pain and comprehensive health-related quality of life (HRQL) assessments may estimate how well patients with BMS live in relation to their health issues. The aims of the study were to explore general and BMS-specific HRQL based on an HRQL model and to compare HRQL in patients with BMS and age-matched controls. Methods For this case-control study 56 female patients with BMS and 56 female controls completed the following: A general questionnaire with Global items for life satisfaction, general health and oral health; General Population-Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluation (GP-CORE); Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS); and Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14). Patients with BMS completed additional questionnaires which included BMS-problem severity, a global item for ratings of overall severity perceptions measured by visual analog scale (VAS); and BMS-modified Multidimensional Pain Inventory-Swedish version (MPI-S). BMS-modified MPI-S includes the three subscales Pain severity, Interference and Social support. Results Patients with BMS scored worse on all global items, GP-CORE, HADS and OHIP-14 compared to controls and the differences were large. Patients with severe BMS problems, as defined by a median split on BMS-problem severity, scored worse on the BMS-modified MPI-S subscale Pain severity and the difference was large. Conclusions We found clearly impaired general HRQL in patients with BMS compared to controls. For specific HRQL, the severity of pain was worse among patients with higher overall BMS-problem severity. The HRQL model with global ratings together with physical, psychological and social concepts has capacity to increase comparability and validity of studies, however further evaluations of the measures are needed. The HRQL model may be used over time to increase the understanding of different HRQL aspects and their internal relationships. In clinical settings, with an increased knowledge of one´s own distinctive quality of life abilities and restrictions, the patients with BMS can be guided and supported to manage their long-lasting pain. The HRQL model may be an aid toward bridging distinctions between general and oral health to further encourage collaboration between medicine and odontology.
