Abstract
To investigate daily functioning, health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and overall quality of life (QoL) in young adult survivors of childhood bacterial meningitis (BM) thereby shedding light on very long-term outcomes and contributing to global meningitis burden estimates. In this cross-sectional study, the Weiss Functional Impairment Rating Scale-Self Report (WFIRS-S), the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Scale vGlobal Health v1.2 (PROMIS-GH), PROMIS-29 profile v2.01 and PROMIS Satisfaction with Social Roles and Activities Short Form 4a v2.0 instruments were administered to 483 survivors of childhood BM who participated in the 20|30 Dutch Postmeningitis study. Mean WFIRS-S scores were calculated as well as mean T-scores of the PROMIS instruments. PROMIS scores of survivors of childhood BM were compared with age-matched Dutch reference scores from the general population. Overall, survivors of childhood BM reported comparable or even better levels of daily functioning, HRQoL, and overall QoL (Global02) than the age-matched Dutch reference group. 10.2% of survivors of childhood BM reported poor mental health and 1.0% of survivors of childhood BM reported poor physical health. The average score of survivors of childhood BM for overall QoL (Global02) was 3.81 (on a scale from 1, indicating poor QoL, to 5, indicating excellent QoL). CONCLUSION Young adult survivors of childhood BM reported similar and even better levels of daily functioning, HRQoL, and overall QoL than age-matched Dutch reference scores. However, clinicians and healthcare workers should be mindful of poor mental and physical health of some survivors of childhood BM because these survivors also face problems with functioning in daily life. WHAT IS KNOWN • Acute bacterial meningitis is a life-threatening infection which may lead to devastating lifelong disabilities. • Health-related quality of life is decreased in school-age survivors of bacterial meningitis. WHAT IS NEW • The present study shows that HRQoL in survivors of childhood BM improves over time • However, especially poor mental health in adolescent and young adult survivors is associated with impaired functioning in daily life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Caregivers of cancer patients are at increased risk of depression and other health challenges. There is limited understanding of the role of the caregiver's own family members in promoting or discouraging mental wellbeing. Family functioning conceptualizes how family members interact to promote a positive family environment and has the potential to impact caregiver mental health. The purpose of this study is to assess the association between family interactions and depressive symptoms among family caregivers of cancer patients. METHODS Secondary analysis of baseline data from an NIH-funded randomized control trial of family caregivers of cancer patients recruited from academic palliative care clinics at three sites (2 Midwest, 1 East). We tested for an association between caregiver responses to the Family Quality of Life in Dementia-Family Interactions Subscale and Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Depression Short Form 8A using a block-wise approach to linear modeling. RESULTS A total of 246 caregivers were included in analysis; caregivers were mostly White (82%), not Hispanic or Latina/o (96%), and female (65%), with an average age of 55 years. Overall, participants had high family interactions (mean 57.7, sd 11.7) and an average depressive symptom burden (t-score 52.4, SD 8.57). Family interactions was significantly negatively associated with depressive symptoms (b = -.163, se = .057) when accounting for relevant covariates. CONCLUSION Family caregivers with more positive family interactions are likely to have fewer depressive symptoms, suggesting family functioning may play a key role in bolstering family caregiver mental health and wellbeing.

Abstract
Background and Aims Further exploration is needed to recognize symptom clusters and categorize subgroups with distinct cluster patterns and associated risks, focusing on symptoms that are highly self-reported by patients with breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy. This study aimed to identify subgroups and risk factors for self-reported high symptom cluster burden among patients with breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy. Methods A total of 647 participants who met the inclusion criteria were included in the study, with data collected on demographics, disease information, self-reported symptoms, and psychosocial factors. Latent class analysis was utilized to identify the subgroup, while logistic regression was used to pinpoint predictive risk factors. Results Latent class analysis revealed three subgroups: the "high burden of all symptoms group" (n = 107, 16.54%), the "high burden of psychological symptoms group" (n = 103, 15.92%), and the "low burden of all symptoms group" (n = 437, 67.54%). Patients in the high burden of all symptom group and high burden of psychological symptom group exhibited significantly worse function outcomes (p < 0.001). Predictive risk factors for the "high burden of all symptom group" included older age, lower self-efficacy, worse body image, and a higher financial burden. Similarly, patients with high burden of psychological symptom were more likely to have low self-efficacy, poor body image, and a high financial burden. Conclusion The study demonstrated the importance of giving more attention to patients with breast cancer who are at risk of developing into membership of high symptom cluster burden group.

Abstract
The Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System 29-item Profile version 2.1 (PROMIS-29 V2.1) is a widely utilized self-reported instrument for assessing health outcomes from the patients' perspectives. This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the PROMIS-29 V2.1 Chinese version among patients with hematological malignancy. Conducted as a cross-sectional, this research was approved by the Medical Ethical Committee of the Institute of Hematology and Blood Diseases Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College (registration number QTJC2022002-EC-1). We employed convenience sampling to enroll eligible patients with hematological malignancy from four tertiary hospitals in Tianjin, Shandong, Jiangsu, and Anhui province in China between June and August 2023. Participants were asked to complete a socio-demographic information questionnaire, the PROMIS-29 V2.1, and the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General (FACT-G). We assessed the reliability, ceiling and floor effects, structural, convergent discriminant and criterion validity of the PROMIS-29 V2.1. A total of 354 patients with a mean age of 46.93 years was included in the final analysis. The reliability of the PROMIS-29 V2.1 was affirmed, with Cronbach's α for the domains ranging from 0.787 to 0.968. Except sleep disturbance, the other six domains had ceiling effects, which were seen on physical function (26.0%), anxiety (37.0%), depression (40.4%), fatigue (18.4%), social roles (18.9%) and pain interference (43.2%), respectively. Criterion validity was supported by significant correlations between the PROMIS-29 V2.1 and FACT-G scores, as determined by the Spearman correlation test (P < 0.001). Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) indicated a good model fit, with indices of χ2/df (2.602), IFI (0.960), and RMSEA (0.067). The Average Variance Extracted (AVE) values for the seven dimensions of PROMIS-29 V2.1, ranging from 0.500 to 0.910, demonstrated satisfactory convergent validity. Discriminant validity was confirmed by ideal √AVE values. The Chinese version of the PROMIS-29 V2.1 profile has been validated as an effective instrument for assessing symptoms and functions in patients with hematological malignancy, underscoring its reliability and applicability in this specific patient group.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This longitudinal study aims to examine the present state of perceived control, self-management efficacy, and overall quality of life (QoL) in patients with breast cancer undergoing radiotherapy, and gain insight into the dynamic trends and factors that influence the quality of life experienced by patients during the course of radiotherapy. METHODS Participants completed the Cancer Experience and Efficacy Scale (CEES), Strategies Used by People to Promote Health (SUPPH), and Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy- Breast (FACT-B). The data was analyzed using the software SPSS26.0. Repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) and mixed-effects linear models were used to analyze trends in perceived control, self-management efficacy, and QoL at three-time points, as well as factors affecting QoL during radiotherapy. RESULTS Perceived control and self-management efficacy were associated with QoL over the course of the radiotherapy. Self-management efficacy (β = 0.30, P < 0.001), presence of chemotherapy (β = 18.33, P = 0.024), and duration of illness (β = 2.25, P = 0.028) had a positive effect on the change in QoL, while time (β = - 2.95, P < 0.001), cancer experience (β = - 0.46, P < 0.001), and type of medical insurance (β = - 2.77, P = 0.021) had the negative effect on the change in QoL. CONCLUSION The QoL, perceived control, and self-efficacy of patients with breast cancer show dynamic changes during radiotherapy. The higher the self-efficacy, the better the QoL, and the worse the QoL when the sense of disease control is poor. At the same time, more attention should be paid to the QoL of breast cancer radiotherapy patients with a long course of the disease, receiving chemotherapy, and different medical payment methods.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aims to assess psychometric properties of the Hungarian PROMIS-29+2 profile measure and provide general population reference values for Hungary. METHODS An adult general population sample (n = 1700) completed PROMIS-29+2 v2.1 in an online survey. The following psychometric properties were assessed: floor and ceiling effect, convergent validity with SF-36v1 domains, internal consistency (McDonald's omega), unidimensionality, local independence, monotonicity, graded response model (GRM) fit and differential item functioning (DIF). Age- and gender-specific reference values were established using the US item calibrations. RESULTS Depending on scale orientation, high floor or ceiling effects were observed for all domains (25.2-60.7%) except for sleep disturbance. McDonald's omega for domains ranged from 0.87-0.97. Unidimensionality, local independence and monotonicity were supported and the GRM adequately fitted for all but one domains. The sleep disturbance domain demonstrated item misfit, response level disordering and low discrimination ability, particularly for item Sleep116 ('refreshing sleep'). Strong correlations were observed between PROMIS-29+2 and corresponding SF-36 domains (rs=│0.60│ to │0.78│). No DIF was detected for most sociodemographic characteristics. Problems with physical function, pain interference and social roles tended to increase, whereas problems with anxiety, depression, fatigue and cognitive function declined with age (p < 0.01). In all domains except for cognitive function, more health problems occurred in females than in males (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION The Hungarian PROMIS-29+2 shows satisfactory psychometric properties; however, the sleep disturbance domain substantially underperforms that requires further attention. Population reference values were generated that facilitate the interpretation of health outcomes in various patient populations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Substance use disorder (SUD) is a complex disabling condition that is not often well understood. Despite decades of SUD research and intervention, prevalence rates remain stable and many traditional treatment options are largely ineffective in helping individuals with SUDs attain long-term abstinence and recovery. One avenue that shows promise in facilitating higher recovery and quality of life (QoL) outcomes in people with SUD is employment that occurs alongside traditional treatment. OBJECTIVE This study sought to understand the role that meaningful and satisfying employment has in SUD outcomes for treatment completers. METHODS Employing a quasi-experimental, cross-sectional, nonequivalent group design, this study examined 197 individuals with SUDs who completed treatment to explore how their employment status during treatment, employment status change from their treatment to the time of the survey, and job satisfaction influenced their recovery and QOL. RESULTS Analyses of covariance (ANCOVAs) revealed that those who made the transition from unemployed at treatment to employed at time of survey and those who were employed in "very satisfying" jobs had higher rates of recovery and QOL than those who were in "very dissatisfying" jobs or made the transition from employed during treatment to unemployed at time of survey. CONCLUSION The results of this study are promising in that employment and job satisfaction seem to be facilitative of recovery and QOL outcomes for this population of SUD treatment completers.

Abstract
Objective Millions of cancer survivors are at risk for cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI), yet accurate and accessible assessments of cognitive functioning remain limited. Ecological mobile cognitive testing (EMCT) could offer a solution. This paper presents the protocol for a study that aims to (1) establish the reliability and validity of EMCT to assess CRCI in breast cancer survivors, and (2) prospectively evaluate within-person processes (and interactions) among context, mood, and behavior that explain cognitive variability, everyday functioning, and quality of life of cancer survivors. Methods Participants will include breast cancer survivors (>21 years old) who are within 5 years of completing chemotherapy treatment. Participants will complete two virtual visits (baseline, follow-up) 2 months apart to assess self-reported cognitive symptoms and cognitive performance, sociodemographic characteristics, clinical history, everyday functioning, and quality of life. Between virtual visits, EMCT will be used to sample cognitive functioning every other day (28 times total). We will use linear mixed-effect regressions and single-level multiple regression models to analyze the data. Results We anticipate a minimum of 124 breast cancer survivors enrolling and completing data collection. Study results will be published in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Conclusions Our findings will have broad implications for assessing CRCI in an ecologically valid and person-centered way using EMCT. We aim to provide this protocol to aid researchers who would like to apply this approach to their studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System 29-item Profile (PROMIS-29) has been widely used to measure health outcomes from the patient's perspective. It has not been validated in adults with aortic disease. The aim of this study was to explore the reliability and validity of the Chinese PROMIS-29 among patients undergoing surgery for aortic dissection (AD). METHODS A cross-sectional design was applied. Eligible patients completed a questionnaire that contained the PROMIS-29 and legacy measures, including the Short Form-12 Health Survey (SF-12), 8-item Somatic Symptom Scale (SSS-8), Generalized Anxiety Disorder-2 (GAD-2), and Patient Health Questionnaire-2 (PHQ-2). The structural validity of the PROMIS-29 was evaluated using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Reliability was evaluated with Cronbach's α. Construct validity was assessed by calculating Spearman's rank correlations and comparing known-group differences. RESULTS In total, a sample of 327 AD patients was included in the final analysis. Most of them were male (89%) with a mean age of 52.7 (± 10.3). CFA revealed good model fit of the seven-factor structure within PROMIS-29, as well as most domains in single-factor analysis. Reliability was confirmed with Cronbach's α > 0.90. Correlations between comparable domains of the PROMIS-29 and those of legacy questionnaires and most know-group comparisons were observed as hypothesized. CONCLUSIONS This study found evidence for acceptable structural validity, construct validity and internal consistency of the PROMIS-29 in a sample of AD patients. It can be applied to AD survivors by researchers or clinicians, measuring outcomes after surgery and identifying those with worse health status.
