The population-level economic burden of liver cancer in China, 2019–2030: prevalence-based estimations from a societal perspective

Effect of Family Music Therapy on Patients with Primary Liver Cancer Undergoing Palliative Care and their Caregivers: A Retrospective Study

OBJECTIVE

The effectiveness of family music therapy for patients with advanced palliative care hepatocellular carcinoma and their main caregivers was investigated.

METHODS

The clinical data of liver cancer patients and their main caregivers admitted to Wuwei City People's Hospital from August 2022 to April 2023 were retrospectively analysed. Patients were divided into observation group A and control group A according to whether they received family music therapy, and caregivers were divided into control group B and observation group B. The general demographic data, self-rating depression scale (SDS), self-rating anxiety scale (SAS), cancer-related fatigue scale (CFS), Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), anticipatory grief scale (AGS), and caregiver burden inventory (CBI) scores of the patients and their primary caregivers were collected. Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to balance the baseline data of the two groups. Then, data were analysed using t-test and chi-squared (χ2) test.

RESULTS

After 1:1 PSM, 45 samples were included in each group. Before management, no significant differences in SDS, SAS, AGS, CFS, PSQI and CBI scores were found among the groups (P > 0.05). After management, the SDS, SAS and CFS scores of observation group A were lower than those of control group A (P < 0.05). The AGS, PSQI and CBI scores of observation group B were lower than those of control group B (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

The effect of family music supplement therapy is ideal, which can relieve the negative emotions of patients, reduce the degree of cancer-related fatigue, enhance the sleep quality of the main caregivers and reduce anticipatory grief and the burden of care.

Spatial epidemiological analysis of the burden of liver cancer in China

Background

Liver cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world, with unique regional variations in disability-adjusted life years (DALY) rate, nearly 50% of liver cancer cases occur in China. Therefore, understanding the epidemiological characteristics of liver cancer is of utmost importance. In this study, to analyze the spatial distribution characteristics and clustering of the DALY rate of liver cancer in 1990 and 2017 in China based on provincial administrative divisions, and to explore its possible influencing factor.

Methods

The DALY rate data of liver cancer at the provincial level in China were collected, the global autocorrelation of the DALY rate was analyzed by Moran's I, the local autocorrelation of the DALY rate was analyzed by Getis-Ord-Gi*, and the influencing factors related to the DALY rate were analyzed by the least squares regression model.

Results

The DALY rate of liver cancer in China generally showed an increasing trend. The DALY rate increased in 22 provinces and decreased in nine provinces. In 2017, the distribution of DALY rate in all provinces showed heterogeneity, with the highest DALY rate in Guangxi (1,363.37/100,000) and the lowest in Beijing (315.78/100,000). In 2017, the low and low clustering were mainly concentrated in Inner Mongolia, Ningxia, Shanxi, Hebei, and Tianjin. The low and high clustering in Yunnan, Guizhou, and Guangdong, were surrounded by the high clustering in neighboring provinces, high and high concentration is mainly concentrated in Hunan and neighboring provinces. The results of the least square regression model showed that the per capita years of education, hepatitis B incidence and the proportion of population over 65 years old had an impact on the DALY rate of liver cancer (P<0.05).

Conclusions

The DALY rate of liver cancer in China showed an overall increasing trend. In 2017, the DALY rate of liver cancer in China had a spatial aggregation in the whole country, and the per capita years of education, the incidence of hepatitis B and the proportion of population over 65 years old had an impact on the DALY rate of liver cancer in space.

Global trends and hotspots in the field of mitochondrial dynamics and hepatocellular carcinoma: A bibliometric analysis from 2007 to 2023

Background

Mitochondria are dynamic organelles, and mitochondrial dynamics are important for the maintenance of mitochondrial inheritance and function. Recently, an increasing number of studies have shown that mitochondrial dynamics play an important role in the occurrence and development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, bibliometric analyses of mitochondrial dynamics in HCC are scarce. Therefore, we conducted a bibliometric analysis to explore the current global research status and trends in mitochondrial dynamics and HCC.

Methods

Global publications on mitochondrial dynamics and HCC published between 2007 and May 2023 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database. Bibliometric analysis was performed using Bibliometrix, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace to analyze the numbers, citations, countries, institutions, authors, journals, references, and keywords.

Results

A total of 518 publications were retrieved fromthe WoSCC database. China and The Fourth Military Medical University were the most productive countries and institutions. Zorzano, A published the most literature whereas Chen, HC was the author with the highest number of co-citations. Plos One was the most popular journal, whereas the Journal of Biological Chemistry had the highest number of co-citations. The most frequently used keyword was "mitochondria". Further analysis of the references and keywords showed that the molecular mechanisms linking them to drug therapy targets should be the focus of future studies.

Conclusions

Research on mitochondrial dynamics in HCC has received much attention, and many studies have been published. However, research on mitochondrial dynamics and HCC has been limited by insufficient regional development imbalances and global cooperation. Nevertheless, future research on mitochondrial dynamics and HCC is promising, especially regarding the molecular mechanisms of mitochondrial fission and fusion and how to link the currently known molecular mechanisms with drug therapy targets for HCC.

Chinese expert consensus statement on the clinical application of AFP/AFP-L3%/DCP using GALAD and GALAD-like algorithm in HCC

BACKGROUND

Primary hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most prevalent world-wide malignancies. Half of the newly developed HCC occurs in China. Optimizing the strategies for high-risk surveillance and early diagnosis are pivotal for improving 5-year survival. Constructing the scientific non-invasive detection technologies feasible for medical and healthcare institutions is among the key routes for elevating the efficacies of HCC identification and follow-up.

RESULTS

Based on the Chinese and international guidelines, expert consensus statements, literatures and evidence-based clinical practice experiences, this consensus statement puts forward the clinical implications, application subjects, detection techniques and results interpretations of the triple-biomarker (AFP, AFP-L3%, DCP) based GALAD, GALAD like models for liver cancer.

CONCLUSIONS

The compile of this consensus statement aims to address and push the reasonable application of the triple-biomarker (AFP, AFP-L3%, DCP) detections thus to maximize the clinical benefits and help improving the high risk surveillance, early diagnosis and prognosis of HCC.

Hepatitis B Virus X Protein Modulates p90 Ribosomal S6 Kinase 2 by ERK to Promote Growth of Hepatoma Cells

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a leading cause of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), one of the most prevalent malignant tumors worldwide that poses a significant threat to human health. The multifunctional regulator known as Hepatitis B virus X-protein (HBx) interacts with host factors, modulating gene transcription and signaling pathways and contributing to hepatocellular carcinogenesis. The p90 ribosomal S6 kinase 2 (RSK2) is a member of the 90 kDa ribosomal S6 kinase family involved in various intracellular processes and cancer pathogenesis. At present, the role and mechanism of RSK2 in the development of HBx-induced HCC are not yet clear. In this study, we found that HBx upregulates the expression of RSK2 in HBV-HCC tissues, HepG2, and SMMC-7721 cells. We further observed that reducing the expression of RSK2 inhibited HCC cell proliferation. In HCC cell lines with stable HBx expression, RSK2 knockdown impaired the ability of HBx to promote cell proliferation. The extracellularly regulated protein kinases (ERK) 1/2 signaling pathway, rather than the p38 signaling pathway, mediated HBx-induced upregulation of RSK2 expression. Additionally, RSK2 and cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) response element binding protein (CREB) were highly expressed and positively correlated in HBV-HCC tissues and associated with tumor size. This study showed that HBx upregulates the expression of RSK2 and CREB by activating the ERK1/2 signaling pathway, promoting the proliferation of HCC cells. Furthermore, we identified RSK2 and CREB as potential prognostic markers for HCC patients.

Burden of liver cancer: From epidemiology to prevention

In this review, we offer a concise overview of liver cancer epidemiology in China and worldwide from the official databases of GLOBOCAN 2020 and the National Cancer Registry in China. We also summarized the evidence for the main risk factors associated with liver cancer risk and discuss strategies implemented in China to control the liver cancer burden. Overall, liver cancer was the sixth most commonly diagnosed cancer and the third leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide in 2020. Although China contributed to nearly half of cases across the world alone, the incidence and mortality rates of liver cancer presented a declining trend owing to the persistent efforts from the governments at all levels. The current liver cancer burden in China still faces an arduous challenge due to the relatively large population base as well as the substantially low survival rate (12.1%). To better control the liver cancer burden with the lowest cost, specific measures should be conducted by reducing exposure to established risk factors such as hepatitis B infection and aflatoxin. The promotion of surveillance is also an important method to prolong the survival of liver cancer. This review will provide basic information for future direction on the control of liver cancer burden.
