Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate critically traditional and modern techniques for cutaneous wound healing and to provide comprehensive information on these novel techniques to encounter the challenges with the existing wound healing methods. SIGNIFICANCE The financial burden and mortality associated with wounds is increasing, so managing wounds is essential. Traditional wound treatments include surgical and non-surgical methods, while modern techniques are advancing rapidly. This review examines the various traditional and modern techniques used for cutaneous wound healing. KEY FINDINGS Traditional wound treatments include surgical techniques such as debridement, skin flaps, and grafts. Non-surgical treatments include skin replacements, topical formulations, scaffold-based skin grafts, and hydrogel-based skin dressings. More modern techniques include using nanoparticles, growth factors, and bioactive substances in wound dressings. Bioengineered skin substitutes using biomaterials, cells, and growth factors are also being developed. Other techniques include stem cell therapy, growth factor/cytokine therapy, vacuum-assisted wound closure, and 3D-printed/bio-printed wound dressings. CONCLUSION Traditional wound treatments have been replaced by modern techniques such as stem cell therapy, growth factor/cytokine therapy, vacuum-assisted wound closure, and bioengineered skin substitutes. However, most of these strategies lack effectiveness and thorough evaluation. Therefore, further research is required to develop new techniques for cutaneous wound healing that are effective, cost-efficient, and appealing to patients.

Abstract
Rise in the incidences of chronic degenerative diseases with aging makes wound care a socio-economic burden and unceasingly necessitates a novel, economical, and efficient wound healing treatment. Platelets have a crucial role in hemostasis and thrombosis by modulating distinct mechanistic phases of wound healing, such as promoting and stabilizing the clot. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) contains a high concentration of platelets than naïve plasma and has an autologous origin with no immunogenic adverse reactions. As a consequence, PRP has gained significant attention as a therapeutic to augment the healing process. Since the past few decades, a robust volume of research and clinical trials have been performed to exploit extensive role of PRP in wound healing/tissue regeneration. Despite these rigorous studies and their application in diversified medical fields, efficacy of PRP-based therapies is continuously questioned owing to the paucity of large samplesizes, controlled clinical trials, and standard protocols. This review systematically delineates the process of wound healing and involvement of platelets in tissue repair mechanisms. Additionally, emphasis is laid on PRP, its preparation methods, handling, classification,application in wound healing, and PRP as regenerative therapeutics combined with biomaterials and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs).

Abstract
Wound healing is highly specialized dynamic multiple phase process for the repair of damaged/injured tissues through an intricate mechanism. Any failure in the normal wound healing process results in abnormal scar formation, and chronic state which is more susceptible to infections. Chronic wounds affect patients’ quality of life along with increased morbidity and mortality and are huge financial burden to healthcare systems worldwide, and thus requires specialized biomedical intensive treatment for its management. The clinical assessment and management of chronic wounds remains challenging despite the development of various therapeutic regimens owing to its painstakingly long-term treatment requirement and complex wound healing mechanism. Various conventional approaches such as cell therapy, gene therapy, growth factor delivery, wound dressings, and skin grafts etc., are being utilized for promoting wound healing in different types of wounds. However, all these abovementioned therapies are not satisfactory for all wound types, therefore, there is an urgent demand for the development of competitive therapies. Therefore, there is a pertinent requirement to develop newer and innovative treatment modalities for multipart therapeutic regimens for chronic wounds. Recent developments in advanced wound care technology includes nanotherapeutics, stem cells therapy, bioengineered skin grafts, and 3D bioprinting-based strategies for improving therapeutic outcomes with a focus on skin regeneration with minimal side effects. The main objective of this review is to provide an updated overview of progress in therapeutic options in chronic wounds healing and management over the years using next generation innovative approaches. Herein, we have discussed the skin function and anatomy, wounds and wound healing processes, followed by conventional treatment modalities for wound healing and skin regeneration. Furthermore, various emerging and innovative strategies for promoting quality wound healing such as nanotherapeutics, stem cells therapy, 3D bioprinted skin, extracellular matrix-based approaches, platelet-rich plasma-based approaches, and cold plasma treatment therapy have been discussed with their benefits and shortcomings. Finally, challenges of these innovative strategies are reviewed with a note on future prospects.

Abstract
Background Growth factors from platelets have been emerging as a revolutionary treatment with the ability to induce cell growth in the skin, which results in retarding and reversing the aging process. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) allows for greater release of growth factors and biologically active proteins, which in turn activates the cascade of stimulation of neoangiogenesis and collagen production. PRP is used in anti-aging and facial skin rejuvenation in the form of dermal injections and topical application during micro-needling. This study was conducted to assess the safety and efficacy of a topically applied face serum, MYOWNN™ (Wockhardt Ltd., Mumbai, India). MYOWNN™ is an autologous growth factor concentrate that has been made into a topical face serum. Methods Male and female subjects in the age group between 30 and 55 years (both inclusive) with Fitzpatrick skin type III-V who had not taken any oral or topical treatments for at least four weeks before and any platelet-rich plasma (PRP) based facial treatment (injections) at least six months before the study entry were included. MYOWNN™ serum was applied on the face once daily at night, approximately 30 minutes before sleeping preferably, for a total duration of five months. Six parameters, i.e. spots, pores, wrinkles, texture, moisture, and pigmentation, were evaluated at regular intervals with Visage-LS (dermaindia®, Tamil Nadu, India), a face analysis system that gives the live status of these six parameters and is an advanced live status skin detection equipment together with shooting, analyzing, and displaying functions, as well as the subjective analysis, was performed by subjects and physicians using different globally accepted scales like physician’s global aesthetic improvement scale (PGAIS), subject’s global aesthetic improvement scale (SGAIS), subject satisfaction score (SSS), and wrinkle severity rating scale (WSRS). For analysis, a mixed model for repeated measures was used. The model had change from baseline as the dependent variable visit as a factor and baseline assessment result as a covariate. All primary and secondary efficacy endpoints were analyzed using Modified Intent-to-Treat (mITT) populations. Results Improvement in an average of six anti-aging parameters was observed as early as three months while statistically significant improvement was observed by the end of five months of application. A statistically significant improvement in wrinkles was observed by the end of three months of the application itself. There were no product-related adverse events reported. Conclusions Five months of application of MYOWNN™ serum showed a statistically significant improvement in an average of six parameters of anti-aging and face rejuvenation with a p-value of 0.0150 (<5% level of significance (i.e. 0.05) and was also well-tolerated.

Abstract
Acellular skin as a scaffold has a good potential to regenerate or repair damaged tissues. Growth factors such as Plasma Rich in Growth Factor (PRGF) as a rich source of active proteins can accelerate tissue regeneration. In this study, an acellular scaffold derived from fish skin with growth factors was used to repair full-thickness skin defects in a rat model. Cellular results demonstrated that epithelial cells adhere well to acellular scaffolds. The results of animal studies showed that the groups treated with acellular scaffold and growth factor have a high ability to close and heal wounds on the 28th day after surgery. Histological and staining results showed that in the treated groups with scaffold and growth factor, an epidermal layer was formed with some skin appendages similar to normal skin. Overall, such scaffolds with biological agents can cause an acceptable synergistic effect on skin regeneration and wound healing.

Abstract
Venous leg ulcers (VLUs) are chronic and recalcitrant lower limb wounds that affect millions of patients annually, severely reducing their quality of life, and causing a significant burden on the health care system. Recently, Platelet rich plasma (PRP) has been used to improve healing of VLUs. This systematic review aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of PRP versus the standard of care commonly used to treat VLUs. Ten prospective studies (8 randomized) met the inclusion criteria comprising 451 patients with 527 VLUs. Results were as follows: a) the weighted Odds Ratio (OR) of the mean healing rate was 2.84 (95% CI = 1.160 to 5.056, I2 = 41.4%, p = 0.0004), b) the mean healed ulcer areas were 79.2 ± 19% for the PRP group and 51.7 ± 36% for the control group (p = 0.007) in favor of the PRP group, and c) the weighted infection OR showed no significant difference between both groups. Additionally, negative correlations were found between healing rate and duration of VLUs and initial size of the ulcers. This meta-analysis demonstrated significant beneficial effects of PRP versus standard of care on healing rate, reduction in surface, and reduction in healing time of VLUs. Infection and other complications were similar to standard of care. Therefore, our analytical data would support the use of PRP as a safe and effective treatment for VLUs.

Abstract
Patellar desmopathy can lead to desmitis, discomfort, and lameness. In the traditional MMT, a pin is used for the fixation of the fragment of the osteotomized tibia to the implant and the tibial diaphysis; this pin needs to be placed below the insertion of the patellar ligament to avoid damaging it. Considering the differences between TTA and MMT, the authors consider it important to determine the incidence of patellar desmopathy in the MMT. This is a prospective study that enrolled 53 owned dogs that underwent MMT and were followed up by a complete examination and radiograph controls to establish the patellar tendon thickening and the presence of clinical desmitis. The PRGF were administrated to 29 of those patients, in order to determine if PRGF’s action could decrease ligament desmitis. The conclusions in this study were that the desmopathy produced by the MMT is similar to that generated by the TTA if the pin is carefully placed; in addition, the PRGF did not decrease the inflammation and the thickening of the ligament.

Abstract
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a widely accepted treatment approach and has heightened the quality of care among physicians. PRP has been used over the last decade to boost clinical results of plastic therapies, periodontal surgery and intra-bony defects. According to certain research, elevated levels of PRP growth factors that could promote tissue repair and have the potential for PRP to be beneficial in regenerating processes that Maxillofacial and Oral Surgeons, Veterinary Officers, Athletic medicine specialists and Dermatologists have long admired. PRP is an autologous whole blood fraction that has a heavy amount of a variety of growth factors such as epidermal growth factor (EGF), Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF), hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), fibroblast growth factors (FGFs), transforming growth factor beta-1 (TGF-b), insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) which can facilitate repair and regeneration. Moreover, a clinical trial of PRP in severe angina patients has shown its excellent safety profile. However, PRP is a very complex biological substance with an array of active biomolecules, its functions are yet to be fully clarified. In-addition, there was insufficient work assessing possible cardiovascular tissue benefits from PRP. Thus, it still remains necessary to identify the most clinically important cardiovascular applications and further research in clinical scenario need to be validated.

Abstract
Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are crucial for tissue homeostasis and repair, secreting vesicles to the extracellular environment. Isolated exosomes were shown to affect angiogenesis, immunomodulation and tissue regeneration. Numerous efforts have been dedicated to describe the mechanism of action of these extracellular vesicles (EVs) and guarantee their safety, since the final aim is their therapeutic application in the clinic. The major advantage of applying MSC-derived EVs is their low or inexistent immunogenicity, prompting their use as drug delivery or therapeutic agents, as well as wound healing, different cancer types, and inflammatory processes in the neurological and cardiovascular systems. MSC-derived EVs display no vascular obstruction effects or apparent adverse effects. Their nano-size ensures their passage through the blood-brain barrier, demonstrating no cytotoxic or immunogenic effects. Several in vitro tests have been conducted with EVs obtained from different sources to understand their biology, molecular content, signaling pathways, and mechanisms of action. Application of EVs to human therapies has recently become a reality, with clinical trials being conducted to treat Alzheimer's disease, retina degeneration, and COVID-19 patients. Herein, we describe and compare the different extracellular vesicles isolation methods and therapeutic applications regarding the tissue repair and regeneration process, presenting the latest clinical trial reports.

Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate and compare the effects of homologous and heterologous PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) on the quality and speed of skin wound healing, compared to Poor Platelet Plasma (PPP). Methods: Twenty-one male adult rabbits were used; two for preparing homologous PRP, with the rest of them separated randomly in three groups, according to the treatment received: PPP - control (n=5), homologous PRP (n=7), heterologous (n=7). Excisional skin wounds were made on the back of the animals, for the application of homologous and heterologous PPP and PRP. At the 14th post-operative day (POD), the animals were subjected to a new wound, and the treatments were inverted. The wounds were evaluated macroscopically and histologically. Results: A larger percentage of scar retraction was observed on the group treated with heterologous PRP, compared to homologous PRP, at the third POD, an increase of 25.03% (p=0.01). No other statistically significant differences among treatments were observed. Among every group, skin healing was efficient, without local adverse effects. Conclusions: Heterologous PRP contributed with more tissue retraction at the beginning of the wound healing process. After this, there were no differences on the wound healing skin process treated with PRP or PPP. However, our findings suggest the presence of others plasmatic factors, besides platelets, which could also contribute to the wound healing process, and thus, should be further investigated.

Abstract
Aim: To compare freeze-dried and fresh platelet-rich plasma (PRP) preparations, in a pre-clinical study. Materials & methods: 30 Wistar male rats were used to compare and characterize human PRP which was applied at the perilesional area in an acute wound model, evaluated by macroscopical and histological analysis. Results: Despite the increased growth factor concentration after the freeze-drying process, no change in the healing kinetics was observed in vivo. Nevertheless, a significant increased number of myofibroblasts was demonstrated in comparison with the fresh PRP group. We also demonstrated a significant increased percentage of blood vessels in comparison with controls in both the superficial and deep epidermis. Conclusion: These results encourage randomized clinical trials to evaluate the effectiveness of freeze-dried PRP for skin ulcer treatment.

Abstract
Chronic nonhealing wounds are a severe burden to health care systems worldwide, causing millions of patients to have lengthy hospital stays, high health care costs, periods of unemployment, and reduced quality of life. Moreover, treating chronic nonhealing wounds effectively and reasonably in countries with limited medical resources can be extremely challenging. With many outstanding questions surrounding chronic nonhealing wounds, in this review, we offer changes to the microbiome as a potentially ignored mechanism important in the formation and treatment of chronic wounds. Our analysis helps bring a whole new understanding to wound formation and healing and provides a potential breakthrough in the treatment of chronic nonhealing wounds in the future.

Abstract
In this study efficiency of platelet rich plasma (PRP) and zinc oxide on full thickness wounds created on rabbits was researched. This study conducted on 24 New Zealand rabbits divided 2 groups. A circular of 1.5 × 1.5 cm (2.5 cm2) full thickness skin wound was created under the general anesthesia. 1 ml PRP (5.503106/mm3) was applied to the one of the wounds subcutaneously. To the other wound 1 mm3 zinc oxide ointment was applied once a day during the study. Wound contraction rates were measured, biopsy materials were collected and evaluated macroscopically and histopathologically postoperatively 3rd, 7th and 15th days. As a result it is determined that PRP and zinc oxide accelerated wound contraction rates between the groups were determined as 3rd day p = 0.007, 7th day p = 0.0002 and 15th day p = 0.002. Wound healing is inborn to all species and is the biologic procedure by which the body repairs itself after injury, whichever it be traumatic, complicated, infected and/or surgical. Platelet rich plasma (PRP) gel is measured to be progressive wound treatment for acute and chronic wounds. PRP gel has mainly been applied to improve or accelerate healing of wound. Zinc is a vital trace element in the human body and its significance in wellbeing and infection is valued. Zinc deficiency of genetic or dietary cause can prompt neurotic, pathologic and physiological changes and deferred wound healing. Topical treatment with autologous PRP can be used as clinical therapy and can enhance tissue healing and enhanced angiogenesis compared to zinc oxide treatments.

Abstract
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is widely used nowadays in different fields of medicine, affecting physiological processes including tissue regeneration. The use of PRP in maxillofacial surgical interventions and its efficiency in the improvement of postoperative wound healing were analysed. Patients undergoing plastic and reconstructive surgeries in the maxillofacial region were recruited: 50 patients were enrolled into a control group (received no PPRP injection) and 50 patients were enrolled into a treatment group, where PRP was applied during the surgical procedure. Evaluation of treatment outcomes was carried out by determination of IL-1β, TNFα, and IL-6 cytokines levels in the wound-drain fluid. The stages of wound healing were assessed by cytological analyses and ultrasound within a month period. The use of the PRP has substantially positive effects, contributing to the improvement of the healing process. In the treatment group, fibroblasts, macrophages, and collagen fibres appeared and their quantities increased earlier than when compared with control group patients. The concentration of IL-1β and TNFα in wound fluid on day 1 and day 5 after operation was higher for the treatment group as opposed to the control group, which was linked to the influence of PRP on inflammatory and granulation phases of the healing process. An ultrasound examination showed less oedema and infiltration in the tissues around the wound of the treatment group.

Abstract
The healing process comprises a sequence of molecular and cellular events that interact to restore injured tissue. Biomaterials such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) have been widely used to promote healing by better collagen distribution. Studies have also shown that statin-associated biomaterials may improve endothelial function and increase re-epithelialization. When assessing healing, the analysis of collagen architecture is critical. One form of evaluation used to identify structural changes in the skin is fractal dimension (FD) analysis, which facilitates the characterisation of irregular structures on histologic slides, and quantification of existing alterations by an accurate technique that is independent of the evaluator. The aim of the current study was to assess the feasibility of using rosuvastatin (RSV) alone and combined with autologous PRP to analyze collagen fibers by FD analysis. Skin lesions were experimentally induced in adult male rabbits, and were then treated with either sodium chloride solution (control), RSV gel, autologous PRP gel, or RSV gel and autologous PRP gel combined. Thirty-two biopsies of the lesions were obtained, on days 7, 14 and 17. All treatments were associated with reduced FDs at all three time-points. The FDs of the wounds that were treated with RSV and PRP combined were significantly lower on day 7 (P < 0.05), suggesting that the combination may favour the reorganisation of fibres during the initial healing process. The use of FD analysis for collagen evaluation was evidently reliable. More studies are needed, to evaluate collagen and healing associated with RSV and PRP in experimentally induced wounds.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The use of Plasma Rich in Growth Factors (PRGF) and Adipose Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells (ASCs) are today extensively studied in the field of regenerative medicine. In recent years, human and veterinary medicine prefer to avoid using traumatic techniques and choose low or non-invasive procedures. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of PRGF, ASCs and the combination of both in wound healing of full-thickness skin defects in rabbits. With this purpose, a total of 144 rabbits were used for this study. The animals were divided in three study groups of 48 rabbits each depending on the administered treatment: PRGF, ASCs, and PGRF+ASCs. Two wounds of 8 mm of diameter and separated from each other by 20 mm were created on the back of each rabbit: the first was treated with saline solution, and the second with the treatment assigned for each group. Macroscopic and microscopic evolution of wounds was assessed at 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 and 10 days post-surgery. With this aim, 8 animals from each treatment group and at each study time were euthanized to collect wounds for histopathological study. RESULTS Wounds treated with PRGF, ASCs and PRGF+ASCs showed significant higher wound healing and epithelialization rates, more natural aesthetic appearance, significant lower inflammatory response, significant higher collagen deposition and angiogenesis compared with control wounds. The combined treatment PRGF+ASCs showed a significant faster cutaneous wound healing process. CONCLUSIONS The combined treatment PRGF+ASCs showed the best results, suggesting this is the best choice to enhance wound healing and improve aesthetic results in acute wounds.

Abstract
AIM The therapeutic evaluation of the biological effect of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) used as a surgical adjunct to maintain the inflammatory process and to potentiate tissue healing, make the subject of recent research in regenerative medicine. This study was designed to evaluate the healing activity of PRP by its topical application on the skin experimentally injured in a sheep model. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study was conducted on 9 adult and clinically healthy males sheep. PRP was obtained by a protocol of double centrifugation of whole blood from each animal. After sterile skin preparation, full-thickness excisional wounds (20 mm x 20 mm) were created on the back of each animal. The animals were randomly divided into three equal groups of three sheep for each. In Group I, the wounds were treated with PRP, in Group II; wounds were treated with Asiaticoside; in Group III, wounds were treated with saline solution. The different treatments were administered topically every 3 days. Morphometric measurements of the contraction surface of the wounds and histopathological biopsies were carried out at the 3rd, 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th days of healing. RESULTS The results of the morphometric data obtained revealed that it was significant differences recorded at the 7th and 14th day of healing in favor for animals of Group I. Semi-quantitative histopathological evaluation showed that PRP reduces inflammation during 3 first days post-surgical and promotes epithelialization in 3 weeks of healing. CONCLUSION We concluded that topical administration of PRP obtained by double centrifugation protocol could potentially improve the skin healing process in sheep.

Abstract
The overall increase of chronic degenerative diseases associated with ageing makes wound care a tremendous socioeconomic burden. Thus, there is a growing need to develop novel wound healing therapies to improve cutaneous wound healing. The use of regenerative therapies is becoming increasingly popular due to the low-invasive procedures needed to apply them. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is gaining interest due to its potential to stimulate and accelerate the wound healing process. The cytokines and growth factors forming PRP play a crucial role in the healing process. This article reviews the emerging field of skin wound regenerative therapies with particular emphasis on PRP and the role of growth factors in the wound healing process.

Abstract
The objective of the study was to review current literature to determine whether the topical application of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) promotes healing in experimentally-induced full-thickness skin wounds in animals. The hypothesis was that the adjunct of PRP has a positive effect on wound healing. An electronic search was carried out on the following databases: Web of Science, Cochrane Library, PubMed, Research Gate, Cochrane Wounds Group, Veterinary Information Network. No publication date nor language restrictions were applied. Randomised and not randomised controlled clinical trials comparing PRP with placebo or with other treatments were included. The reduction of open wound area in PRP-treated (test) wounds compared to control wounds was the primary outcome. Secondary outcomes were healing time and number of healed cases in test group compared to control. The following effect sizes were calculated: the Hedges' g for continuous variables; the odds ratio for binary data. Eighteen controlled clinical trials were included in the qualitative and quantitative synthesis, with a total of 661 wounds. All studies were published in the period 2007-2016. Eight studies were carried out on rodent/lagomorph mammals and 10 on non-rodent/lagomorph mammals. In all included studies, control wounds underwent placebo or were left untreated. The PRP group showed a better healing performance than the control group in each outcome. The effect size was statistically significant considering the primary outcome and the overall aggregation of the three outcomes. The effect size, although in favour of the treatment with PRP, was not significant considering the healing time and the number of healings. The overall heterogeneity was mild or moderate. Five studies reported a high risk of selection bias. The publication bias was always mild or absent. The results support the hypothesis of the positive effects of the PRP when compared to control groups in the treatment of experimentally-induced full-thickness skin wounds in animals. PRP can therefore be considered an effective adjunctive therapy in stimulating second intention healing of acute wounds in healthy animals.

Abstract
Aim The aim of the study was to carry out a review of published studies on various platelet products in Iranian studies. Materials & methods Electronic databases were searched for relevant articles. Two review authors independently extracted data via a tested extraction sheet, and disagreements were resolved by a meeting with a third review author. Results Bone disorders (25%), wound and fistula (16%), dental and gingival disorders (14%) and osteoarthritis (11%) have more relative frequency based on different fields. Conclusion The necessity of pursuing standard protocols in the preparation of platelet products, stating the precise content of platelets and growth factors, and long-term follow-up of study subjects were the most important points in Iranian studies.

system.

Abstract
Ultra-pulsed fractional CO2 laser is an efficient, precise, and safe therapeutic intervention for skin refreshing, although accompanied with prolonged edema and erythema. In recent years, autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has been proven to promote wound and soft tissue healing and collagen regeneration. To investigate whether the combination of PRP and ultra-pulsed fractional CO2 laser had a synergistic effect on therapy for facial rejuvenation. Totally, 13 facial aging females were treated with ultra-pulsed fractional CO2 laser. One side of the face was randomly selected as experimental group and injected with PRP, the other side acted as the control group and was injected with physiological saline at the same dose. Comprehensive assessment of clinical efficacy was performed by satisfaction scores, dermatologists' double-blind evaluation and the VISIA skin analysis system. After treatment for 3 months, subjective scores of facial wrinkles, skin texture, and skin elasticity were higher than that in the control group. Similarly, improvement of skin wrinkles, texture, and tightness in the experimental group was better compared with the control group. Additionally, the total duration of erythema, edema, and crusting was decreased, in the experimental group compared with the control group. PRP combined with ultra-pulsed fractional CO2 laser had a synergistic effect on facial rejuvenation, shortening duration of side effects, and promoting better therapeutic effect.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To investigate the effects of platelet-rich plasma on tissue maturation and burn healing in an experimental partial-thickness burn injury model. MATERIAL AND METHODS Thirty Wistar albino rats were divided into 3 groups of 10 rats each. Group 1 (platelet-rich plasma group) was exposed to burn injury and topical platelet-rich plasma was applied. Group 2 (control group) was exposed to burn injury only. Group 3 (blood donor group) was used as blood donors for platelet-rich plasma. The rats were killed on the seventh day after burn injury. Tissue hydroxyproline levels were measured and histopathologic changes were examined. RESULTS Hydroxyproline levels were significantly higher in the platelet-rich plasma group than in the control group (P=.03). Histopathologically, there was significantly less inflammatory cell infiltration (P=.005) and there were no statistically significant differences between groups in fibroblast development, collagen production, vessel proliferations, or epithelization. CONCLUSIONS Platelet-rich plasma seems to partially improve burn healing in this experimental burn injury model. As an initial conclusion, it appears that platelet-rich plasma can be used in humans, although further studies should be performed with this type of treatment.
