Abstract
BACKGROUND Being too light at birth can increase the risk of various diseases during infancy. AIM To explore the effect of perinatal factors on term low-birth-weight (LBW) infants and build a predictive model. This model aims to guide the clinical management of pregnant women's healthcare during pregnancy and support the healthy growth of newborns. METHODS A retrospective analysis was conducted on data from 1794 single full-term pregnant women who gave birth. Newborns were grouped based on birth weight: Those with birth weight < 2.5 kg were classified as the low-weight group, and those with birth weight between 2.5 kg and 4 kg were included in the normal group. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to identify the factors influencing the occurrence of full-term LBW. A risk prediction model was established based on the analysis results. The effectiveness of the model was analyzed using the Hosmer-Leme show test and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve to verify the accuracy of the predictions. RESULTS Among the 1794 pregnant women, there were 62 cases of neonatal weight < 2.5 kg, resulting in an LBW incidence rate of 3.46%. The factors influencing full-term LBW included low maternal education level [odds ratio (OR) = 1.416], fewer prenatal examinations (OR = 2.907), insufficient weight gain during pregnancy (OR = 3.695), irregular calcium supplementation during pregnancy (OR = 1.756), and pregnancy hypertension syndrome (OR = 2.192). The prediction model equation was obtained as follows: Logit (P) = 0.348 × maternal education level + 1.067 × number of prenatal examinations + 1.307 × insufficient weight gain during pregnancy + 0.563 × irregular calcium supplementation during pregnancy + 0.785 × pregnancy hypertension syndrome - 29.164. The area under the ROC curve for this model was 0.853, with a sensitivity of 0.852 and a specificity of 0.821. The Hosmer-Leme show test yielded χ 2 = 2.185, P = 0.449, indicating a good fit. The overall accuracy of the clinical validation model was 81.67%. CONCLUSION The occurrence of full-term LBW is related to maternal education, the number of prenatal examinations, weight gain during pregnancy, calcium supplementation during pregnancy, and pregnancy-induced hypertension. The constructed predictive model can effectively predict the risk of full-term LBW.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Pregnant mothers are at risk of many adverse pregnancy outcomes, including infants with low birth weight (LBW). The World Health Organization aimed to achieve a 30% reduction in the number of LBW infants by the year 2025. In this study, we aimed to determine the incidence and determinants of LBW infants among pregnant mothers attending government health clinics in Peninsular Malaysia. MATERIAL AND METHODS A prospective cohort study "Relative Risk of Determinants of Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes Among Pregnant Mothers Attending Government Health Clinics, Peninsular Malaysia, PEN-MUM" was conducted from March 2022 until March 2023 at 20 government health clinics in Peninsular Malaysia that were randomly selected through a multistage sampling method. Malaysian pregnant mothers between 18 and 49 years old were recruited at 12-18 weeks of gestation and followed up at three time points: 1 (24-28 weeks of gestation), 2 (36-40 weeks of gestation), and 3 (post-delivery). Eight exposure factors of LBW were studied: gestational weight gain, dengue infection, urinary tract infection, COVID-19 infection, gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, maternal anemia, and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). RESULTS Among 507 participants enrolled in the cohort, 40 were lost to follow-up. A total of 467 were included in the final analysis, giving an attrition rate of 7.9%. The incidence of LBW infants in Peninsular Malaysia was 14.3%. After adjusting for three covariates (ethnicity, employment status, and gestational age at birth), three determinants of LBW were identified. The risk of giving birth to LBW infants was higher among those with inadequate gestational weight gain (aRR = 2.86, 95% CI: 1.12, 7.37, p = 0.03), gestational hypertension (aRR = 4.12; 95% CI: 1.66, 10.43; p = 0.002), and GDM (aRR = 2.21; 95% CI: 1.18, 4.14; p = 0.013) during the second and third trimesters. CONCLUSIONS The incidence of LBW infants in Peninsular Malaysia can be considered high. Having inadequate gestational weight gain, gestational hypertension, and GDM in the second and third trimesters increased the risk of LBW infants by threefold, fivefold, and twofold respectively. Thus, intervention strategies should target prevention, early detection, and treatment of gestational hypertension and GDM, as well as promoting adequate weight gain during antenatal care.

Abstract
The relationship between exposure to air pollutants and fetal growth outcomes has shown inconsistency, and only a limited number of studies have explored the impact of air pollution on gestational hypertension and birth outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate how maternal exposure to air pollutants and blood pressure could influence fetal birth outcomes. A total of 55 women with gestational hypertension and 131 healthy pregnant women were enrolled in this study. Data pertaining to personal characteristics, prenatal examinations, outdoor air pollutant exposure, and fetal birth outcomes were collected. The study revealed that fetal birth weight and abdominal circumference exhibited a significant reduction among women with gestational hypertension compared to healthy pregnant women, even after adjustments for body mass index, gestational age, and exposure to air pollutants had been made. Moreover, maternal exposure to outdoor air pollutants displayed a notable correlation with decreased birth length of fetuses. Consequently, the study concluded that maternal blood pressure and exposure to outdoor air pollutants during pregnancy potentially stand as pivotal factors influencing fetal birth outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In this umbrella review, we systematically evaluated the evidence from meta-analyses and systematic reviews of maternal factors associated with low birth weight. METHODS PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched to identify all relevant published studies up to August 2023. We included all meta-analysis studies (based on cohort, case-control, cross-sectional studies) that examined the association between maternal factors (15 risk factors) and risk of LBW, regardless of publication date. A random-effects meta-analysis was conducted to estimate the summary effect size along with the 95% confidence interval (CI), 95% prediction interval, and heterogeneity (I2) in all meta-analyses. Hedges' g was used as the effect size metric. The effects of small studies and excess significance biases were assessed using funnel plots and the Egger's test, respectively. The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed using the AMSTAR 2 tool. RESULTS We included 13 systematic Review with 15 meta-analysis studies in our study based on the inclusion criteria. The following 13 maternal factors were identified as risk factors for low birth weight: crack/cocaine (odds ratio [OR] 2.82, 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.26-3.52), infertility (OR 1.34, 95% CI 1.2-1.48), smoking (OR 2.00, 95% CI 1.76-2.28), periodontal disease (OR 2.41, 95% CI 1.67-3.47), depression (OR 1.84, 95% CI 1.34-2.53), anemia (OR 1.32, 95% CI 1.13-1.55), caffeine/coffee (OR 1.34, 95% CI 1.14-1.57), heavy physical workload (OR 1.87, 95% CI 1.00-3.47), lifting ≥ 11 kg (OR 1.59, 95% CI 1.02-2.48), underweight (OR 1.79, 95% CI 1.20-2.67), alcohol (OR 1.23, 95% CI 1.04-1.46), hypertension (OR 3.90, 95% CI 2.73-5.58), and hypothyroidism (OR 1.40, 95% CI 1.01-1.94). A significant negative association was also reported between antenatal care and low birth weight. CONCLUSIONS This umbrella review identified drug use (such as crack/cocaine), infertility, smoking, periodontal disease, depression, caffeine and anemia as risk factors for low birth weight in pregnant women. These findings suggest that pregnant women can reduce the risk of low birth weight by maintaining good oral health, eating a healthy diet, managing stress and mental health, and avoiding smoking and drug use.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Birth asphyxia is a major cause of infant death across the world, especially in developing countries, where the issue is significantly underreported and underestimated, particularly in fragile and conflict-affected states. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence and risk factors for birth asphyxia in women at Jiblah University Hospital in Ibb, Yemen, and its predictive factors throughout six years of conflict. METHOD We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional chart review and analysis of the birth database spanning from June 2013 to September 2019 at Jiblah University Hospital in Ibb, Yemen. We used APGAR (appearance, pulse, grimace, activity, and respiration) scores <7 at both the first- and fifth-minute post-delivery with umbilical cord arterial blood pH <7 (metabolic acidosis) and/or neurologic manifestations (seizures or an altered tone) within the first 24 hours of life to define birth asphyxia cases. Factors associated with birth asphyxia were analyzed using univariate and multivariate regression analysis with an odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS A total of 5,193 neonates were delivered during the study period. The prevalence of birth asphyxia in 309 (6%) neonates. In a multivariate analysis, illiteracy (OR: 2.90; 95% CI: 0.98-8.41), referred mothers (OR: 3.04; 95% CI: 1.42-6.40), advanced maternal age (OR: 1.05; 95% CI: 1.02-1.07), home delivery (OR: 6.50; 95% CI: 3.09-12.57), prematurity (OR: 1.43; 95% CI: 1.05-1.93), and low birth weight (OR: 3.09; 95% CI: 1.93-4.93) were predictors for birth asphyxia and were statistically significant (p<0.05). CONCLUSION In this study, the prevalence of birth asphyxia was equivalent to that of other underdeveloped nations. However, continual attention and treatments are required to lower the risk of birth asphyxia. Illiteracy, referred mothers, advanced maternal age, home delivery, prematurity, and low birth weight were all predictors of birth asphyxia in this research. Most birth asphyxia factors mentioned in this study can be managed through effective prenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum care, as well as a strict following of national obstetrics and neonatal guidelines.

Abstract
Neonatal mortality and morbidity are often caused by preterm birth and lower birth weight. Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and gestational hypertension (GH) are the most prevalent maternal medical complications during pregnancy. However, evidence on effects of air pollution on adverse birth outcomes and pregnancy complications is mixed. Singleton live births conceived between January 1st, 2000, and December 31st, 2015, and reached at least 27 weeks of pregnancy in Kansas were included in the study. Trimester-specific and total pregnancy exposures to nitrogen dioxide (NO2), particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 μm (PM2.5), and ozone (O3) were estimated using spatiotemporal ensemble models and assigned to maternal residential census tracts. Logistic regression, discrete-time survival, and linear models were applied to assess the associations. After adjustment for demographics and socio-economic status (SES) factors, we found increases in the second and third trimesters and total pregnancy O3 exposures were significantly linked to preterm birth. Exposure to the second and third trimesters O3 was significantly associated with lower birth weight, and exposure to NO2 during the first trimester was linked to an increased risk of GDM. O3 exposures in the first trimester were connected to an elevated risk of GH. We didn't observe consistent associations between adverse pregnancy and birth outcomes with PM2.5 exposure. Our findings indicate there is a positive link between increased O3 exposure during pregnancy and a higher risk of preterm birth, GH, and decreased birth weight. Our work supports limiting population exposure to air pollution, which may lower the likelihood of adverse birth and pregnancy outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adverse birth outcomes, such as preterm birth and low birth weight (LBW), are leading causes of neonatal morbidity and mortality. In this study, we aimed to estimate the association between inter-pregnancy interval (IPI) and the risks of adverse birth outcomes in a subsequent pregnancy. METHODS We conducted a retrospective analysis involving 630 mothers who delivered a singleton live infant at a leading tertiary hospital in northern Jordan from March to August 2021. Outcome variables were preterm birth (<37 weeks of gestation) and LBW (<2.5 kg). Using multivariable logistic regression, the association between IPI and these two adverse birth outcomes was investigated. RESULTS The rates of preterm birth and LBW were 12.4% and 16.8%, respectively. Compared with an optimal IPI (24-36 months), a short IPI (<24 months) was positively associated with preterm birth (aOR: 4.09; 95% CI: 1.48-6.55) and LBW (aOR: 3.58; 95% CI: 1.57-5.15). Infants conceived after a long IPI (≥ 60 months) had increased odds of preterm birth (aOR: 3.78; 95% CI: 1.12-5.78) and LBW (aOR: 2.65; 95% CI: 1.67-4.03). Preterm delivery was also significantly associated with the mother's age (aOR: 1.10; 95% CI: 1.04-1.17), history of multiple cesarean births (aOR: 2.67; 95% CI: 1.14-4.29), prolonged rupture of membranes (aOR: 2.46; 95% CI: 1.10-5.52), and perinatal death (aOR: 3.42; 95% CI: 1.10-5.49). A mother's history of prior LBW (aOR: 4.39; 95% CI: 1.08-6.80), hypertensive disorders (aOR: 1.95; 95% CI: 1.03-3.89), and multiple cesarean births (aOR: 4.35; 95% CI: 2.10-6.99) was associated with LBW. CONCLUSIONS Both short and long IPIs were related to preterm delivery and LBW. Optimal birth spacing is recommended to improve birth outcomes and must be considered when designing effective family planning programs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore whether pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) mediates the association between pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) and adverse neonatal outcomes in women undergoing assisted reproductive technology (ART) for singleton pregnancies. METHODS This cohort study collected 79437 maternal data from the National Vital Statistics System (NVSS) between 2020 and 2021. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression models were applied to estimate the association between pre-pregnancy BMI and PIH in women receiving ART as well as the associations between pre-pregnancy BMI and PIH and adverse neonatal outcomes. The mediation effect of PIH on the association between pre-pregnancy BMI and adverse neonatal outcomes was estimated according to the total effect, natural direct effect, natural indirect effect, and percentage of mediation. RESULTS There were 25769 participants had adverse neonatal outcomes at the end of the follow-up. After adjusting for confounding factors, an increased risk of PIH in women receiving ART was identified in those with pre-pregnancy BMI ≥25 kg/m2 [odds ratio (OR)=1.92, 95% confidence interval (CI):1.84-2.01]. Pre-pregnancy BMI ≥25 kg/m2 was associated with an increased risk of adverse neonatal outcomes (OR = 1.26, 95%CI:1.22-1.30). Women with PIH had an increased risk of adverse neonatal outcomes (OR = 1.79, 95%CI:1.71-1.87). The percentage mediated by PIH in the association between pre-pregnancy BMI and adverse neonatal outcomes was 21.30%. CONCLUSION PIH partially mediated the association between pre-pregnancy BMI and adverse neonatal outcomes in women receiving ART, which recommends that women control weight before receiving ART.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The negative impact of prenatal alcohol and tobacco exposure (PAE and PTE) on fetal development and birth outcomes are well described, yet pathophysiologic mechanisms are less clear. Our aim was to investigate (1) the associations between quantity, frequency and timing (QFT) of PAE and PTE with blood flow velocities in arteries of the fetal-placental-maternal circulation and (2) the extent to which combined effect of QFT of PAE and/or PTE and Doppler flow velocity waveforms (FWV) predict infant birth weight. METHODS The Safe Passage Study is a cohort based in urban Cape Town, South Africa. Recruitment occurred between 2007 and 2015. Information on QFT of PAE and PTE was collected prospectively at up to 4 occasions during pregnancy using a modified Timeline Follow-Back approach. Ultrasound examinations consisted of Doppler flow velocity waveforms of the uterine, umbilical (UA) and fetal middle cerebral arteries for the pulsatility index (PI) at 20-24 and 34-38 weeks. Exclusion criteria included: twin pregnancies, stillbirths, participants exposed to other drugs. The sample was divided into three groups (controls, PAE and PTE) and included 1396 maternal-fetal-dyads assessed during the second trimester; 1398 assessed during the third trimester. RESULTS PTE was associated with higher UA PI values in second and third trimesters (p < 0.001), compared to the PAE and control group. The total amount of cigarettes smoked during pregnancy was positively correlated with UA PI values (r = 0.087, p < 0.001). There was a positive correlation between cigarettes smoked per day in trimester one (r = 0.091, p < 0.01), and trimester two (r = 0.075, p < 0.01) and UA PI (in trimester two), as well as cigarettes smoked per day in trimester two (r = 0.058, p < 0.05) and trimester three (r = 0.069, p < 0.05) and the UA PI in trimester three. Generalized additive models indicated that PAE in trimester two, PTE in trimester one and Doppler FWV in trimester three were significant predictors of birth weight in this sample. CONCLUSION In our study, PTE in trimesters two and three resulted in increased vascular resistance of the placenta. These findings highlight nuance in associations between PAE, PTE and blood flow velocities in arteries of the fetal-placental-maternal circulation and birth weight, suggesting that quantity and timing are important factors in these relationships.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDPs) are responsible for most perinatal and fetal mortality. Few programs are patient-centered during pregnancy, thereby increasing the risks of misinformation and misconceptions among pregnant women and, as a result, malpractices. OBJECTIVE This study aims to develop and validate a form to assess the knowledge and attitudes of pregnant women about HDPs. STUDY DESIGN A cross-sectional pilot study was conducted over 4 months, targeting 135 pregnant women from 5 obstetrics and gynecology clinics. A self-reported survey was developed and validated, and an awareness score was generated. RESULTS The mean maternal age of the participants was 27.3 (5.3) years. About 80% of the participants reported that they monitored their weight during pregnancy, and 70.4% monitored their blood pressure, out of which 73.8% performed it at the doctor's clinic only. Overall, participants had a total score of 16.9 (3.1) over 25 with higher attitude scores than knowledge scores. Less than half of the patients (45.2%) knew the cut-off for hypertension. With respect to knowledge statements, higher scores were noted for statements related to the symptoms of HDPs, and lower scores were reported for statements related to some HDP complications. Older women and those who monitored their blood pressure during pregnancy had significantly higher awareness scores. Those working had higher awareness of HDPs (67.4%), whereas about half of nonworkers (53.9%) showed lower awareness scores (P=.019). CONCLUSION Pregnant women had moderate awareness of HDPs. The short 25-item tool developed in the present study can be used in obstetric clinics to explore the awareness of women of HDPs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cardiovascular diseases are a leading cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. Pregnancy imposes unique physiological changes on a woman's cardiovascular system. MATERIALS AND METHODS A cohort of 68 participants, comprising 30 pregnant women with cardiovascular risk and 38 without cardiovascular risk, was recruited for this study. These participants were prospectively followed during their pregnancies from 2020 to 2022 at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of the "Pius Brînzeu" Emergency County Clinical Hospital in Timişoara, Romania. All women included in this study underwent cesarean section deliveries at the same medical facility. Data regarding the gestational weeks at delivery, birth weight, and Apgar scores assessed by neonatologists were collected for each participant. Statistical analyses were performed to compare the neonatal effects between the two groups. RESULTS The results of this study revealed significant differences between the groups in terms of Apgar scores (p = 0.0055), gestational weeks (p = 0.0471), and baby birth weight (p = 0.0392). CONCLUSION The findings underscore the importance of considering maternal cardiovascular health as a potential determinant of neonatal outcomes. Further research is needed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms and develop strategies for optimizing neonatal outcomes in high-risk pregnancies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Assisted reproductive technology (ART) has been widely used in the treatment of infertility, and is associated with adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. However, the potential pathways by which ART affects adverse neonatal outcomes are unclear. We aimed to investigate the role of pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) in the association between ART and adverse neonatal outcomes. METHODS Adult women (aged ≥ 18 years) with a singleton pregnancy in the National Vital Statistics System (NVSS) 2020 were enrolled in this retrospective cohort study. Study outcomes were adverse neonatal outcomes, including premature birth, low birth weight, and admission to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Logistic regression models were utilized to investigate the association between ART, PIH, and adverse neonatal outcomes, expressed as odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). The distribution-of-the-product method was used to explore whether there was a mediating effect of PIH between ART and adverse neonatal outcomes, and the 95% CI of the distribution-of-the-product did not contain 0 indicating a mediating effect. RESULTS This study included 2,824,418 women, of whom 35,020 (1.24%) women used ART, 239,588 (8.48%) women had PIH, and 424,741 (15.04%) neonates had any adverse neonatal outcomes. The use of ART was associated with higher odds of PIH (OR = 1.42; 95%CI: 1.37-1.46) and any adverse neonatal outcomes (OR = 1.47; 95%CI: 1.43-1.51). The distribution-of-the-product was 0.31 (95%CI: 0.28-0.34), and 8.51% of the association between ART and adverse neonatal outcomes was mediated through PIH. Among different adverse neonatal outcomes, PIH mediated 29.17% of the association between ART and low birth weight, 9.37% of the association between ART and premature birth, and 12.20% of the association between ART and NICU admission. The mediating effect of PIH was found in women of different ages (< 35 years and ≥ 35 years) and parities (primipara and multipara). CONCLUSION This study supports a mediating role for PIH in the association between ART and adverse neonatal outcomes. Further studies are needed to determine the mechanisms by which AR affects PIH so that interventions to reduce PIH can be developed to reduce adverse neonatal outcomes associated with ART.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Low birth weight (LBW) is associated with infant mortality and postpartum health complications. In previous studies, overall LBW has been found to be significantly associated with several sociodemographic factors, including ethnicity, maternal age, and family income. Few studies have evaluated the association between environmental risk factors and LBW rates. This study investigated the effect of pre-birth water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) and housing conditions on self-reported low birth weight. METHODS The Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey, which covered all administrative regions of Ethiopia from January to June 2016, provided data for this study. STATA version 16 was used to analyze 12,125 participants across weighted samples. Multivariable multilevel mixed-effect logistic regression analysis was conducted to determine the effects of each factor on the outcome while accounting for data clustering. The adjusted odds ratios and corresponding 95% confidence intervals were used to determine the statistical significance of the independent variables. RESULTS One thousand five hundred and seventeen newborns, or 12.59% [95% CI (10.2- 15.3)], had low birth weights. When other factors were taken into account, the following factors were significantly associated with low birth weight: not using small-scale water treatment technology before using water [AOR (95% CI) 1.36 (1.08-2.23)], burning solid fuels for energy [AOR (95% CI) 1.99 (1.60-2.21)], living in homes with natural wall coverings [AOR (95% CI) 1.81 (1.47-2.21)], using a shared latrine within a woman's housing complex or compound [AOR (95% CI) 1.63(1.06-2.25)], and living in peripheral, isolated regions [AOR (95% CI) 1.38 (1.06-2.21)]. CONCLUSION A little more than one out of every ten deliveries in Ethiopia was under normal (recommended) weight. This study shows that poor housing conditions and lack of household WASH infrastructure are independent predictors of poor birth outcomes among Ethiopian women, adding to the limited evidence that environmental factors within the domicile contribute to low birth weight. Interventions to address these issues may help lower the prevalence of LBW.

Household Food Insecurity and Demographic Factors, Low Birth Weight and Stunting in Early Childhood: Findings from a Longitudinal Study in South Africa. Matern Child Health J 2023; 27:59-69. Abstract
BACKGROUND Low birthweight (LBW) as well as early childhood stunting are risk factors for increased childhood morbidity in low-and middle-income countries (LMIC). The Covid 19 pandemic has exacerbated food insecurity and unemployment globally, prompting concerns for maternal and child health. OBJECTIVES We used data from the great recession of 2008 to examine the relationship between household food security and other risk factors with LBW and stunting using a longitudinal sample of South African women and their offspring. METHODS Food security indicators, alcohol use, blood pressure and other characteristics were examined in relation to LBW (≤ 2500 g), stunting (height for age ≤ 2SD) and severe stunting (height for age ≤ 3SD). Regression modelling with clustering at maternal ID level were employed to adjust for maternal characteristics and women who gave birth more than once during the reference period. RESULTS Birthweight data were available for 1173 children and height for age 1216 children. The prevalence of LBW was 14.7% while stunting and severe stunting was 17.8% and 14.5%. Child hunger in the household, maternal hypertension and alcohol use were associated with low birthweight. Food expenditure below the Stats SA poverty line and low dietary diversity was associated with stunting and severe stunting respectively. Maternal height and low birthweight were associated with both stunting and severe stunting. CONCLUSIONS FOR PRACTICE Interventions that can improve household food security and nutritional status during the periconceptional and antenatal period may reduce the prevalence of low birthweight and subsequent stunting in low- and middle-income countries.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To study the effect of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy on peripheral venous blood cell count in preterm infants with a gestational age of 28-34 weeks. METHODS A total of 227 preterm infants with a gestational age of 28-34 weeks who were admitted to the Department of Pediatrics, the First Hospital Affiliated to Kunming Medical University, from January to December 2020, and whose mothers had hypertensive disorders of pregnancy were enrolled as the study group. A total of 227 preterm infants with a gestational age of 28-34 weeks who were admitted during the same period and whose mothers did not have hypertensive disorders of pregnancy were enrolled as the control group. According to maternal blood pressure during pregnancy, the study group was divided into three subgroups: gestational hypertension (n=75), mild preeclampsia (n=81), and severe preeclampsia (n=71). According to the birth weight of the preterm infants, the study group was divided into two subgroups: small for gestational age (SGA) (n=113) and appropriate for gestational age (AGA) (n=114). Peripheral blood cell count on day 1 after birth was compared between the study and control groups, as well as between the subgroups of the study group. RESULTS Compared with the control group, the study group had significantly lower white blood cell count, absolute neutrophil count, and blood platelet count (P<0.05) and significantly higher incidence rates of leucopenia and neutropenia (P<0.05). The subgroup analysis showed that the mild preeclampsia and severe preeclampsia subgroups had significantly lower white blood cell count, absolute neutrophil count, and blood platelet count than the gestational hypertension subgroup (P<0.05), and that the SGA subgroup had significantly lower white blood cell count, absolute neutrophil count, and blood platelet count than the AGA subgroup (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy can affect the peripheral venous blood cell count of preterm infants, which is more significant in infants with maternal preeclampsia and SGA infants.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are associated with an increased risk of adverse neonatal outcomes. Although twin pregnancies had a higher risk of developing HDP, it is not known whether HDP in twins will increase the risk of adverse neonatal outcomes. We aimed to assess whether this association differed in singleton and twin pregnancies in women who conceived with assisted reproductive technology (ART). METHODS We finally included 193,590 live births born via ART from the National Vital Statistics System (NVSS) for the years 2015-2019. We used Log-binomial regression to evaluate the associations between HDP and the risk of adverse neonatal outcomes in ART mothers. RESULTS Among 193,590 ART-treated mothers, there were 140,870 and 52,720 mothers who had singleton pregnancies and twin pregnancies, respectively. Those ART mothers with twin pregnancies had a higher rate of HDP than singleton pregnancies (20.5% vs. 11.0%). In singleton pregnancies, the risks of preterm birth [adjusted risk ratio (aRR)): 2.80, 95% CI 2.67-2.93], low birth weight (aRR: 2.80, 95% CI 2.67-2.93), small for gestational age (aRR: 1.41, 95% CI 1.34-1.49), 5 min Apgar <7 (aRR: 1.66, 95% CI 1.50-1.83) and cesarean section (aRR: 1.23, 95% CI 1.21-1.25) were significantly higher in HDP mothers than in non-HDP mothers respectively. However, in contrast to singleton pregnancies, these associations were weak or reversed in twin pregnancies, after adjusting for confounding factors. CONCLUSION In ART-treated women, although twin pregnancies had a higher HDP rate, the risk of adverse neonatal outcomes associated with HDP was lower than that of singletons.

Abstract
Mental health disorders such as anxiety and/or depression are the most common mental health disorders seen among reproductive aged women and can increase during pregnancy. Many sociodemographic risk factors have been associated with anxiety and/or depression in pregnancy, which can lead to adverse maternal and infant outcomes including the risk of a hypertensive pregnancy. The current study prospectively examined self-reported anxiety, depression and stress in pregnant women without a history of fetal loss or mood disorders beginning at 20-26 weeks. At each study visit, circulating immune factors associated with perinatal mood disorders were measured in blood samples that were collected. A total of 65 women were eligible for data analysis, 26 of which had hypertensive pregnancies. There was not a significant difference in self-reported depression, anxiety or stress between hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and normotensive women. Black women were more likely to have a hypertensive pregnancy and develop a perinatal mood disorder compared to non-black women. Both the inflammatory cytokines interleukin-17 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha were increased in patients with perinatal mood disorders. However, additional research is needed in a larger sample to truly understand the relationship between these factors along with the underlying etiologies and the associated outcomes.

Abstract
AIM To explore the association between common pregnancy complications and low birth weight (LBW) neonates in preterm birth. METHODS The study included 1764 pregnant women who experienced a single birth prematurely at a city hospital in Guangzhou, China between January 1, 2017 and December 31, 2019. A total of 874 normal birth weight neonates and 890 LBW neonates were included. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify and measure risk factors; two-tailed test was applied, with a p ≤ 0.05 considered statistically significant. RESULTS Hypertension was the primary risk factor of LBW in preterm neonates, odds ratio (OR) = 2.912 (p < 0.001; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.044-4.149), followed by hypothyroidism, OR = 1.807 (p = 0.046; 95% CI, 1.012-3.226), placental abruption, OR = 1.759 (p = 0.049; 95% CI, 1.002-3.087), reproductive tract infection, OR = 1.746 (p < 0.001; 95% CI, 1.325-2.301), abnormal amniotic fluid volume, OR = 1.737 (p = 0.003; 95% CI, 1.202-2.501), and fetal distress OR = 1.690 (p = 0.012; 95% CI, 1.120-2.551). CONCLUSION Preventing risk factors, such as hypertension, hypothyroidism, and reproductive tract infections, during pregnancy may reduce the incidence of LBW neonates.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Over the past decade, the incidence of low birth weight (LBW) in sub-Saharan Africa has not seen any decline and this is a matter of grave concern for healthcare providers, policymakers, and researchers. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the incidence of LBW and related maternal risk factors (during pregnancy or delivery) as well as neonatal outcomes. METHODS An institutional-based retrospective cross-sectional study design was employed to select 1,017 mothers who delivered in the study hospital from January to December 2017 with singleton newborn babies without congenital diseases. Data were analysed using STATA version 14.1 (StataCorp. 2015. Stata Statistical Software: Release 14. College Station, TX: Stata Corp LP). Chi-square test of independence was used to test the association between the dependent variable (LBW) and risk factors of LBW. Bivariate and multivariable unconditional logistic regression was used to determine the factors associated with LBW. RESULTS The incidence of LBW was 23.7%. The findings show that being married has a protective effect on LBW [AOR = 0.60 (95%CI: 0.40-0.90), p = 0.013] compared to single mothers. Neonates born between gestational age of 37-42 weeks had 85% lower odds of LBW [AOR = 0.15, (95%CI: 0.10-0.24), p < 0.001)]. Neonates with LBW had a higher risk of low Apgar score in the first minute compared to neonates with normal birth weight [AOR = 0.52 (95%CI: 0.37-0.73), p < 0.001]. Female neonates had 64% higher odds of LBW compared to their male counterparts [AOR = 1.64 (95%CI: 1.19-2.24), p = 0.002]. CONCLUSION This study revealed a high incidence of LBW. Women's marital status (single mothers), gestational age (<37 weeks), neonatal sex (female), are independent risk factors associated with LBW, while a higher risk of an Apgar score of less than 7 in the first minute was an independent outcome of low birth weight births. The current study findings contribute to the growing literature on the influence of maternal and neonatal factors on LBW in resource-constrained settings. These findings could guide healthcare providers, hospital administrators, stakeholders, and policymakers to develop and implement appropriate clinical and public health strategies aimed at reducing LBW.
