Abstract
BACKGROUND Inhibitors that are released from lignocellulose biomass during its treatment represent one of the major bottlenecks hindering its massive utilization in the biotechnological production of chemicals. This study demonstrates that negative effect of inhibitors can be mitigated by proper feeding strategy. Both, crude undetoxified lignocellulose hydrolysate and complex medium supplemented with corresponding inhibitors were tested in acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) fermentation using Clostridium beijerinckii NRRL B-598 as the producer strain. RESULTS First, it was found that the sensitivity of C. beijerinckii to inhibitors varied with different growth stages, being the most significant during the early acidogenic phase and less pronounced during late acidogenesis and early solventogenesis. Thus, a fed-batch regime with three feeding schemes was tested for toxic hydrolysate (no growth in batch mode was observed). The best results were obtained when the feeding of an otherwise toxic hydrolysate was initiated close to the metabolic switch, resulting in stable and high ABE production. Complete utilization of glucose, and up to 88% of xylose, were obtained. The most abundant inhibitors present in the alkaline wheat straw hydrolysate were ferulic and coumaric acids; both phenolic acids were efficiently detoxified by the intrinsic metabolic activity of clostridia during the early stages of cultivation as well as during the feeding period, thus preventing their accumulation. Finally, the best feeding strategy was verified using a TYA culture medium supplemented with both inhibitors, resulting in 500% increase in butanol titer over control batch cultivation in which inhibitors were added prior to inoculation. CONCLUSION Properly timed sequential feeding effectively prevented acid-crash and enabled utilization of otherwise toxic substrate. This study unequivocally demonstrates that an appropriate biotechnological process control strategy can fully eliminate the negative effects of lignocellulose-derived inhibitors.

Abstract
Bacteria from diverse genera, including Acetivibrio, Bacillus, Cellulosilyticum, Clostridium, Desulfotomaculum, Lachnoclostridium, Moorella, Ruminiclostridium, and Thermoanaerobacterium, have attracted significant attention due to their versatile metabolic capabilities encompassing acetogenic, cellulolytic, and C1-metabolic properties, and acetone-butanol-ethanol fermentation. Despite their biotechnological significance, a comprehensive understanding of clostridial physiology and evolution has remained elusive. This study reports an extensive comparative genomic analysis of 48 fully sequenced bacterial genomes from these genera. Our investigation, encompassing pan-genomic analysis, central carbon metabolism comparison, exploration of general genome features, and in-depth scrutiny of Cluster of Orthologous Groups genes, has established a holistic whole-genome-based phylogenetic framework. We have classified these strains into acetogenic, butanol-producing, cellulolytic, CO2-fixating, chemo(litho/organo)trophic, and heterotrophic categories, often exhibiting overlaps. Key outcomes include the identification of misclassified species and the revelation of insights into metabolic features, energy conservation, substrate utilization, stress responses, and regulatory mechanisms. These findings can provide guidance for the development of efficient microbial systems for sustainable bioenergy production. Furthermore, by addressing fundamental questions regarding genetic relationships, conserved genomic features, pivotal enzymes, and essential genes, this study has also contributed to our comprehension of clostridial biology, evolution, and their shared metabolic potential.

Abstract
Aldehyde:ferredoxin oxidoreductases (AORs) have been isolated and biochemically-characterized from a handful of anaerobic or facultative aerobic archaea and bacteria. They catalyze the ferredoxin (Fd)-dependent oxidation of aldehydes to acids. Recently, the involvement of AOR in the reduction of organic acids to alcohols with electrons derived from sugar or synthesis gas was demonstrated, with alcohol dehydrogenases (ADHs) carrying out the reduction of the aldehyde to the alcohol (AOR-ADH pathway). Here, we describe the biochemical characterization of an AOR of the thermophilic fermentative bacterium Thermoanaerobacter sp. strain X514 (AORX514). The putative aor gene (Teth514_1380) including a 6x-His-tag was introduced into the genome of the genetically-accessible, related species Thermoanaerobacter kivui. The protein was purified to apparent homogeneity, and indeed revealed AOR activity, as measured by acetaldehyde-dependent ferredoxin reduction. AORX514 was active over a wide temperature (10 to 95 °C) and pH (5.5 to 11.5) range, utilized a wide variety of aldehydes (short and branched-chained, aliphatic, aromatic) and resembles archaeal sensu stricto AORs, as the protein is active in a homodimeric form. The successful, recombinant production of AORX514 in a related, well-characterized and likewise strict anaerobe paves the road towards structure-function analyses of this enzyme and possibly similar oxygen-sensitive or W/Mo-dependent proteins in the future.

Abstract
Metabolomics is a mainstream strategy for investigating microbial metabolism. One emerging application of metabolomics is the systematic quantification of metabolic boundary fluxes – the rates at which metabolites flow into and out of cultured cells. Metabolic boundary fluxes can capture complex metabolic phenotypes in a rapid assay, allow computational models to be built that predict the behavior of cultured organisms, and are an emerging strategy for clinical diagnostics. One advantage of quantifying metabolic boundary fluxes rather than intracellular metabolite levels is that it requires minimal sample processing. Whereas traditional intracellular analyses require a multi-step process involving extraction, centrifugation, and solvent exchange, boundary fluxes can be measured by simply analyzing the soluble components of the culture medium. To further simplify boundary flux analyses, we developed a custom 96-well sampling system—the Microbial Containment Device (MCD)—that allows water-soluble metabolites to diffuse from a microbial culture well into a bacteria-free analytical well via a semi-permeable membrane. The MCD was designed to be compatible with the autosamplers present in commercial liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry systems, allowing metabolic fluxes to be analyzed with minimal sample handling. Herein, we describe the design, evaluation, and performance testing of the MCD relative to traditional culture methods. We illustrate the utility of this platform, by quantifying the unique boundary fluxes of four bacterial species and demonstrate antibiotic-induced perturbations in their metabolic activity. We propose the use of the MCD for enabling single-step metabolomics sample preparation for microbial identification, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and other metabolic boundary flux applications where traditional sample preparation methods are impractical.

Abstract
Background Lignocellulosic biomass is recognized as an effective potential substrate for biobutanol production. Though many pretreatment and detoxification methods have been set up, the fermentability of detoxicated lignocellulosic substrate is still far lower than that of starchy feedstocks. On the other hand, the number of recent efforts on rational metabolic engineering approaches to increase butanol production in Clostridium strains is also quite limited, demonstrating the physiological complexity of solventogenic clostridia. In fact, the strain performance is greatly impacted by process control. developing efficient process control strategies could be a feasible solution to this problem. Results In this study, oxidoreduction potential (ORP) controlling was applied to increase the fermentability of enzymatically hydrolyzed steam-exploded corn stover (SECS) for butanol production. When ORP of detoxicated SECS was controlled at − 350 mV, the period of fermentation was shortened by 6 h with an increase of 27.5% in the total solvent (to 18.1 g/L) and 34.2% in butanol (to 10.2 g/L) respectively. Silico modeling revealed that the fluxes of NADPH, NADH and ATP strongly differed between the different scenarios. Quantitative analysis showed that intracellular concentrations of ATP, NADPH/NADP+, and NADH/NAD+ were increased by 25.1%, 81.8%, and 62.5%. ORP controlling also resulted in a 2.1-fold increase in butyraldehyde dehydrogenase, a 1.2-fold increase in butanol dehydrogenase and 29% increase in the cell integrity. Conclusion ORP control strategy effectively changed the intracellular metabolic spectrum and significantly improved Clostridium cell growth and butanol production. The working mechanism can be summarized into three aspects: First, Glycolysis and TCA circulation pathways were strengthened through key nodes such as pyruvate carboxylase [EC: 6.4.1.1], which provided sufficient NADH and NADPH for the cell. Second, sufficient ATP was provided to avoid “acid crash”. Third, the key enzymes activities regulating butanol biosynthesis and cell membrane integrity were improved. Abstract
Due to energy and environmental concerns, biobutanol is gaining increasing attention as an alternative renewable fuel owing to its desirable fuel properties. Biobutanol production from lignocellulosic biomass through acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) fermentation has gained much interest globally due to its sustainable supply and non-competitiveness with food, but large-scale fermentative production suffers from low product titres and poor selectivity. This review presents recent developments in lignocellulosic butanol production, including pretreatment and hydrolysis of hemicellulose and cellulose during ABE fermentation. Challenges are discussed, including low concentrations of fermentation sugars, inhibitors, detoxification, and carbon catabolite repression. Some key process improvements are also summarised to guide further research and development towards more profitable and commercially viable butanol fermentation.

Abstract
Soluble compounds produced during the enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocelluloses hampers cellulose conversion. Cellobiose and vanillin most severely inhibited the effect of cellobiohydrolase I. A concentration-dependent negative cooperative effect was found between cellobiose and vanillin. The combined inhibitory effect was about 83.5% of the cellobiose and 88.1% of the vanillin when their concentration was 20 mg/ml. However, the negative synergy could be eliminated by excessive enzyme loading. Differences in their binding sites on the catalytic domain of cellobiohydrolase I lead to negative synergistic inhibition, which should be considered in devising strategies to alleviate this effect. Combined β-glucosidase and PEG addition at an appropriate dose was feasible to balance cost and hydrolytic efficiency. To achieve efficient hydrolysis, especially at high solid concentrations, it is important to understand the synergistic inhibition between these inhibitors.

Abstract
Solventogenic clostridia has been considered as one of the most potential microbial cell factories for biofuel production in the biorefinery industry. However, the inherent shortcomings of clostridia strains such as low productivity, by-products formation and toxic tolerance still strongly restrict the large-scale application. Therefore, concerns regarding the genetic modification of solventogenic clostridia have spurred interests into the development of modern gene-editing tools. In this review, we summarize the latest advances of genetic tools involved in modifying solventogenic clostridia. Following a systematic comparison on their respective characteristics, we then review the corresponding strategies for overcoming the obstacles to the enhanced production. Discussing the progress of other microbial cell factories for solventogenesis, we finally describe the key challenges and trends with valuable recommendations for future large-scale biosolvent industrial application.

Abstract
The current study used acid hydrolysis of lignocellulosic materials to obtain fermentable sugar for bioethanol production. However, toxic compounds that inhibit fermentation are also produced during the process, which reduces the bioethanol productivity. In this study, atmospheric cold plasma (ACP) was adopted to degrade the toxic compounds within sulfuric acid-hydrolyzed sugarcane bagasse. After ACP treatment, significant decreases in toxic compounds (31% of the formic acid, 45% of the acetic acid, 80% of the hydroxymethylfurfural, and 100% of the furfural) were observed. The toxicity of the hydrolysate was low enough for bioethanol production using Kluyveromyces marxianus. After adopting optimal ACP conditions (200 W power for 25 min), the bioethanol productivity improved from 0.25 to 0.65 g/L/h, which means that ACP could effectively degrade toxic compounds within the hydrolysate, thereby enhancing bioethanol production. Various nitrogen substitute was coordinated with detoxified hydrolysate, and chicken meal group presented the highest bioethanol productivity (0.45 g/L/h).

Abstract
Along with traditional ecotoxicological approaches in model organisms, toxicological studies in non-model organisms are being taken into consideration in order to complement them and contribute to more robust approaches. This allows us to figure out the complexity of the exposures involved in natural ecosystems. In this context, in the present research we have used the model species Chironomus riparius (Chironomidae, Diptera) and the non-model species Prodiamesa olivacea (Chironomidae, Diptera) to assess the aquatic toxic effects of acute 4-h and 24-h exposures to 1 μgL-1 of three common environmental pollutants: butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP), bisphenol A (BPA), and benzophenone 3 (BP3). Individuals of both species were collected from a contaminated river (Sar) in Galicia (Spain). Regarding Chironomus, there are four OECD standardized tests for the evaluation of water and sediment toxicity, in which different species in this genus can be used to assess classical toxicity parameters such as survival, immobilization, reproduction, and development. In contrast, Prodiamesa is rarely used in toxicity studies, even though it is an interesting toxicological species because it shares habitats with Chironomus but requires less extreme conditions (e.g., contamination) and higher oxygen levels. These different requirements are particularly interesting in assessing the different responses of both species to pollutant exposure. Quantitative real-time PCR was used to evaluate the transcriptional changes caused by xenobiotics in different genes of interest. Since information about P. olivacea in genomic databases is scarce, its transcriptome was obtained using de novo RNAseq. Genes involved in biotransformation pathways and the oxidative stress response (MnSOD, CAT, PHGPx, Cyp4g15, Cyp6a14-like and Cyp6a2-like) were de novo identified in this species. Our results show differential toxic responses depending on the species and the xenobiotic, being P. olivacea the dipteran that showed the most severe effects in most of the studied biomarker genes. This work represents a multi-species approach that allows us to deepen in the toxicity of BBP, BPA, and BP3 at the molecular level. Besides, it provides an assessment of the tolerance/sensitivity of natural populations of model and non-model insect species chronically exposed to complex mixtures of pollutants in natural scenarios. These findings may have important implications for understanding the adverse biological effects of xenobiotics on P. olivacea, providing new sensitive biomarkers of exposure to BBP, BPA, and BP3. It also highlights the suitability of Prodiamesa for ecotoxicological risk assessment, especially in aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract
The sustainable production of solvents from above ground carbon is highly desired. Several clostridia naturally produce solvents and use a variety of renewable and waste-derived substrates such as lignocellulosic biomass and gas mixtures containing H2/CO2 or CO. To enable economically viable production of solvents and biofuels such as ethanol and butanol, the high productivity of continuous bioprocesses is needed. While the first industrial-scale gas fermentation facility operates continuously, the acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) fermentation is traditionally operated in batch mode. This review highlights the benefits of continuous bioprocessing for solvent production and underlines the progress made towards its establishment. Based on metabolic capabilities of solvent producing clostridia, we discuss recent advances in systems-level understanding and genome engineering. On the process side, we focus on innovative fermentation methods and integrated product recovery to overcome the limitations of the classical one-stage chemostat and give an overview of the current industrial bioproduction of solvents.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lignocellulosic biomass is a promising resource of renewable biochemicals and biofuels. However, the presence of inhibitors existing in lignocellulosic hydrolysates (LCH) is a great challenge to acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) fermentation by Clostridium acetobutylicum. In particular, phenolic compounds (PCs) from LCH severely block ABE production even at low concentrations. Thus, it is urgent to gain insight into the intracellular metabolic disturbances caused by phenolic inhibitors and elucidate the underlying mechanisms to identify key industrial bottlenecks that undermine efficient ABE production. RESULTS In this study, a time-course of ABE fermentation by C. acetobutylicum in the presence of four typical PCs (syringaldehyde, vanillin, ferulic acid, and p-coumaric acid) was characterized, respectively. Addition of PCs caused different irreversible effects on ABE production. Specifically, syringaldehyde showed the greatest inhibition to butanol production, followed by vanillin, ferulic acid, and p-coumaric acid. Subsequently, a weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) based on RNA-sequencing data was applied to identify metabolic perturbations caused by four LCH-derived PCs, and extract the gene modules associated with extracellular fermentation traits. The hub genes in each module were subjected to protein-protein interaction analysis and enrichment analysis. The results showed that functional modules were PC-dependent and shared some unique features. Specifically, p-coumaric acid caused the most extensive transcriptomic disturbances, particularly affecting the gene expressions of ribosome proteins and the assembly of flagella, DNA replication, repair, and recombination; the addition of syringaldehyde caused significant metabolic disturbances on the gene expressions of ribosome proteins, starch and sucrose metabolism; vanillin mainly disturbed purine metabolism, sporulation and signal transduction; and ferulic acid caused a metabolic disturbance on glycosyl transferase-related gene expressions. CONCLUSION This study uncovers novel insights into the inhibitory mechanisms of PCs for the first time and provides guidance for future metabolic engineering efforts, which establishes a powerful foundation for the development of phenol-tolerant strains of C. acetobutylicum for economically sustainable ABE production with high productivity from lignocellulosic biomass.

Abstract
Biohydrogen is a plausible alternative fuel solution for the contemporary issues regarding global warming and the steadily increasing greenhouse gas emissions, because of its high energy content and carbon-free combustion properties. Hydrogen does not exist in its natural state and the current hydrogen production technologies (steam methane reforming, water splitting) are energy-intensive, accompanied by a huge carbon footprint. Dark fermentative hydrogen production by anaerobic hydrogen-producing bacteria is a green, sustainable and emission-free pathway for hydrogen production. Microalgal biomass is considered as the third generation biofuel feedstock and is receiving academic and industrial research attention for its carbon sequestration abilities. This review discusses in detail about the pretreatment methods that could be adapted for microalgal biomass for effective biohydrogen production. Microalgal cell wall structure and the associated polymeric carbohydrates that offer certain recalcitrance are critically analyzed and future research perspectives are presented.

Abstract
Lignocellulosic biomass is considered abundant renewable feedstock to constitute a green and environmentally friendly approach for biofuels (bio-butanol) production as an effective substitute for fossil resources. However, a variety of fermentable inhibitors can be generated in hydrolysates during the biomass pretreatment process. Among them, phenolics including phenolic acids and phenolic aldehydes are the most toxic inhibitors to solventogenic clostridia for bio-butanol production. This study elucidates the physiological mechanism of Clostridium acetobutylicum ATCC 824 response to phenolic inhibitors by the integration of kinetics and transcriptional analysis. Butanol fermentations were stressed by 0.4 g/L phenolic acids or 0.4 g/L phenolic aldehydes at 12 h at the beginning of solventogenesis. With post-stress for 12 h, butanol titer was 7.01 g/L in fermentation with phenolic acid stress, while only 5.82 g/L butanol was produced in the case of phenolic aldehydes stress. Reductions in the two fermentations were 27.6% and 40.0% in comparison with the control (without stress), indicated that phenolic aldehydes had a stronger inhibitory effect on solvents synthesis in C. acetobutylicum than phenolic acids. Additionally, the transcriptional analysis revealed that phenolics altered the gene expression profiles related to membrane transporters such as ATP-binding cassette (ABC)-transporter and phosphotransferase system (PTS), glycolysis, and heat shock proteins. The lower expression levels of PTS-related genes might result in reduced glucose consumption and finally inhibited solvents synthesis under phenolic aldehydes stress. Some genes encoding histidine kinase (CA_C0323, CA_C0903, and CA_C3319) were also affected by phenolics, which might inhibit sporulation. In conclusion, our results provide valuable guidance for the construction of robust strain to efficiently produce bio-butanol from lignocellulosic biomass.

Abstract
Background Worldwide 3.4 billion tonnes of municipal solid waste (MSW) will be produced annually by 2050, however, current approaches to MSW management predominantly involve unsustainable practices like landfilling and incineration. The organic fraction of MSW (OMSW) typically comprises ~ 50% lignocellulose-rich material but is underexplored as a biomanufacturing feedstock due to its highly inconsistent and heterogeneous composition. This study sought to overcome the limitations associated with studying MSW-derived feedstocks by using OMSW produced from a realistic and reproducible MSW mixture on a commercial autoclave system. The resulting OMSW fibre was enzymatically hydrolysed and used to screen diverse microorganisms of biotechnological interest to identify robust species capable of fermenting this complex feedstock. Results The autoclave pre-treated OMSW fibre contained a polysaccharide fraction comprising 38% cellulose and 4% hemicellulose. Enzymatic hydrolysate of OMSW fibre was high in d-glucose (5.5% w/v) and d-xylose (1.8%w/v) but deficient in nitrogen and phosphate. Although relatively low levels of levulinic acid (30 mM) and vanillin (2 mM) were detected and furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural were absent, the hydrolysate contained an abundance of potentially toxic metals (0.6% w/v). Hydrolysate supplemented with 1% yeast extract to alleviate nutrient limitation was used in a substrate-oriented shake-flask screen with eight biotechnologically useful microorganisms (Clostridium saccharoperbutylacetonicum, Escherichia coli, Geobacillus thermoglucosidasius, Pseudomonas putida, Rhodococcus opacus, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Schizosaccharomyces pombe and Zymomonas mobilis). Each species’ growth and productivity were characterised and three species were identified that robustly and efficiently fermented OMSW fibre hydrolysate without significant substrate inhibition: Z. mobilis, S. cerevisiae and R. opacus, respectively produced product to 69%, 70% and 72% of the maximum theoretical fermentation yield and could theoretically produce 136 kg and 139 kg of ethanol and 91 kg of triacylglycerol (TAG) per tonne of OMSW. Conclusions Developing an integrated biorefinery around MSW has the potential to significantly alleviate the environmental burden of current waste management practices. Substrate-oriented screening of a representative and reproducible OMSW-derived fibre identified microorganisms intrinsically suited to growth on OMSW hydrolysates. These species are promising candidates for developing an MSW biorefining platform and provide a foundation for future studies aiming to valorise this underexplored feedstock.

Abstract
Butanol is an important bulk chemical, as well as a promising renewable gasoline substitute, that is commonly produced by solventogenic Clostridia. The main cost of cellulosic butanol fermentation is caused by cellulases that are required to saccharify lignocellulose, since solventogenic Clostridia cannot efficiently secrete cellulases. However, cellulolytic Clostridia can natively degrade lignocellulose and produce ethanol, acetate, butyrate and even butanol. Therefore, cellulolytic Clostridia offer an alternative to develop consolidated bioprocessing (CBP), which combines cellulase production, lignocellulose hydrolysis and co-fermentation of hexose/pentose into butanol in one step. This review focuses on CBP advances for butanol production of cellulolytic Clostridia and various synthetic biotechnologies that drive these advances. Moreover, the efforts to optimize the CBP-enabling cellulolytic Clostridia chassis are also discussed. These include the development of genetic tools, pentose metabolic engineering and the improvement of butanol tolerance. Designer cellulolytic Clostridia or consortium provide a promising approach and resource to accelerate future CBP for butanol production.

Abstract
Lignocellulosic biomass is an inexpensive renewable source that can be used to produce biofuels and bioproducts. The recalcitrance nature of biomass hampers polysaccharide accessibility for enzymes and microbes. Several pretreatment methods have been developed for the conversion of lignocellulosic biomass into value-added products. However, these pretreatment methods also produce a wide range of secondary compounds, which are inhibitory to enzymes and microorganisms. The selection of an effective and efficient pretreatment method discussed in the review and its process optimization can significantly reduce the production of inhibitory compounds and may lead to enhanced production of fermentable sugars and biochemicals. Moreover, evolutionary and genetic engineering approaches are being used for the improvement of microbial tolerance towards inhibitors. Advancements in pretreatment and detoxification technologies may help to increase the productivity of lignocellulose-based biorefinery. In this review, we discuss the recent advancements in lignocellulosic biomass pretreatment technologies and strategies for the removal of inhibitors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The industrial vinegar residue (VR) from solid-state fermentation, mainly cereals and their bran, will be a potential feedstock for future biofuels because of their low cost and easy availability. However, utilization of VR for butanol production has not been as much optimized as other sources of lignocellulose, which mainly stem from two key elements: (i) high biomass recalcitrance to enzymatic sugar release; (ii) lacking of suitable industrial biobutanol production strain. Though steam explosion has been proved effective for bio-refinery, few studies report SE for VR pretreatment. Much of the relevant knowledge remains unknown. Meanwhile, recent efforts on rational metabolic engineering approaches to increase butanol production in Clostridium strain are quite limited. In this study, we assessed the impact of SE pretreatment, enzymatic hydrolysis kinetics, overall sugar recovery and applied atmospheric and room temperature plasma (ARTP) mutant method for the Clostridium strain development to solve the long-standing problem. RESULTS SE pretreatment was first performed. At the optimal condition, 29.47% of glucan, 71.62% of xylan and 22.21% of arabinan were depolymerized and obtained in the water extraction. In the sequential enzymatic hydrolysis process, enzymatic hydrolysis rate was increased by 13-fold compared to the VR without pretreatment and 19.60 g glucose, 15.21 g xylose and 5.63 g arabinose can be obtained after the two-step treatment from 100 g VR. Porous properties analysis indicated that steam explosion can effectively generate holes with diameter within 10-20 nm. Statistical analysis proved that enzymatic hydrolysis rate of VR followed the Pseudop-second-order kinetics equation and the relationship between SE severity and enzymatic hydrolysis rate can be well revealed by Boltzmann model. Finally, a superior inhibitor-tolerant strain, Clostridium acetobutylicum Tust-001, was generated with ARTP treatment. The water extraction and enzymolysis liquid gathered were successfully fermented, resulting in butanol titer of 7.98 g/L and 12.59 g/L of ABE. CONCLUSIONS SE proved to be quite effective for VR due to high fermentable sugar recovery and enzymatic hydrolysate fermentability. Inverse strategy employing ARTP and repetitive domestication for strain breeding is quite feasible, providing us with a new tool for solving the problem in the biofuel fields.
