Interventions to improve patient health education competence among nursing personnel: A scoping review

AIM

To determine what intervention strategies have been used in interventions aimed at improving the patient health education competence of nursing personnel.

BACKGROUND

There is a growing body of research on educational interventions for improving nursing personnel's patient health education competence, but there are significant differences in the teaching objectives, content and methods of these studies, as well as a lack of standardized educational strategies.

DESIGN

The scoping review was based on the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology.

METHODS

In this study, six databases and the gray literature source, the Google search engine, were searched. A search strategy was developed based on the three-step search method recommended by the Joanna Briggs Institute. Two researchers independently performed study selection and data extraction.

RESULTS

22 articles reported on the specifics of educational interventions. The duration of these interventions ranged from a minimum of 1.5 hours to a maximum of 3 months. Most interventions employed face-to-face courses as the teaching model. The studies included a variety of teaching methods, with the most frequently mentioned being lectures, discussions, demonstrations, simulations and role-playing. However, most studies lacked specific teaching objectives and none described the educational content of the implementation process. Additionally, none of the studies developed educational content based on a competence framework for patient health education. Few studies reported on long-term effects.

CONCLUSION

The diverse intervention strategies demonstrated in these studies could serve as valuable evidence to guide the development of relevant educational programs and facilitate the design of future high-quality educational interventions.

The development and initial evaluation of conversation cards for optimizing consultations for patients with atopic dermatitis

Purpose: Patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) require both skills and support to effectively manage life with the disease. Here, we developed an agenda-setting tool for consultations with patients with AD to establish a collaborative agenda that enhances patient involvement and prioritizes on self-management support.

Materials and methods: Using the design thinking process, we included 64 end-users (patients and healthcare professionals (HCPs)) across the different phases of design thinking. We identified seven overall categories that patients find important to discuss during consultations, which informed the development of a tool for co-creating a consultation agenda (conversation cards, CCs).

Results: Through iterative user testing of the CCs, patients perceived the cards as both inspiring and an invitation from HCPs to openly discuss their needs during consultations. Healthcare professionals have found the CCs easy to use, despite the disruption to the typical consultation process.

Conclusion: In summary, the CCs provide a first-of-its-kind agenda-setting tool for patients with AD. They offer a simple and practical method to establishing a shared agenda that focuses on the patients' needs and are applicable within real-world clinical settings.

Extended Half-life Antibodies: A Narrative Review of a New Approach in the Management of Atopic Dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic, inflammatory skin disease characterized by intense pruritus and eczematous lesions, significantly impacting physical health and quality of life. The pathogenesis of AD involves genetic predisposition, immune dysregulation, and environmental factors, with a defective skin barrier playing a crucial role. Treatment options for AD include both topical and systemic therapies, with advanced treatments like Janus kinase inhibitors and biologics offering significant improvements but facing limitations in safety and dosing frequency. Extended half-life antibodies represent a promising advancement for the management of immune-mediated inflammatory diseases, including AD. These antibodies, engineered for prolonged circulation and reduced dosing frequency, target key cytokines and immune pathways known to be involved in the pathogenesis of AD, offering potential for less frequent administration while maintaining efficacy. Currently, two such agents are in phase 2 trials. APG777, targeting interleukin-13 (IL-13), and IMG-007, targeting OX40 receptor, have shown promising preclinical and early clinical results. They demonstrated prolonged half-lives and the potential for less frequent dosage regimen, along with significant improvements in AD symptoms. These therapies could enhance patient adherence and reduce healthcare burdens by decreasing injection frequencies and clinic visits. As research continues, extended half-life antibodies could significantly improve AD management and patient quality of life. Further studies will determine the long-term safety and efficacy of extended half-life antibodies, with ongoing innovations in antibody engineering likely to broaden their applications and benefits.

Self-management Support for Patients with Atopic Dermatitis: A Qualitative Interview Study

Patients with a chronic skin disease, eg, atopic dermatitis, need self-management skills to increase their quality of life. We explored patients' needs for self-management support from healthcare professionals and how these needs can be met in a dermatology setting. Interpretive description methodology was chosen for iterative data collection and analysis of qualitative interviews with patients with atopic dermatitis. Two mutually dependent themes were found to be supportive of patients' self-management. Personal and disease-related recognition was fundamental to successful support. However, guidance for agenda-setting from healthcare professionals was also needed on the wide range of topics that could be covered in the consultation based on individual needs. Patients need self-management support in addition to what can be found with family, friends, or peers. It is crucial that the support is delivered with an appreciative approach by healthcare professionals with profound knowledge of atopic dermatitis. Equally important is guidance towards agenda-setting, a way to co-construct the consultation with a clear focus on the specific patient's needs.

Readability of Patient Electronic Materials for Atopic Dermatitis in 23 Languages: Analysis and Implications for Dermatologists

INTRODUCTION

Patients search on the Internet for information about various medical procedures and conditions. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the readability of online health information related to atopic dermatitis (AD). Online resources are becoming a standard in facilitating shared decision-making processes. With a pipeline of new therapeutic options like immunomodulators, understanding of the complexity of AD by the patients is crucial.

METHODS

The term "atopic dermatitis" translated into 23 official European Union languages was searched using the Google search engine. The first 50 records in each language were evaluated for suitability. Included materials were barrier-free, focused on patient education, and were not categorized as advertisements. Article sources were classified into four categories: non-profit, online shops, pharmaceutical companies, and dermatology clinic. Readability was assessed with Lix score.

RESULTS

A total of 615 articles in Swedish, Spanish, Slovenian, Slovak, Romanian, Portuguese, Polish, Lithuanian, Latvian, Irish, Italian, Hungarian, Greek, German, French, Finnish, Estonian, English, Dutch, Danish, Czech, Croatian, and Bulgarian were evaluated. The overall mean Lix score was 56 ± 8, which classified articles as very hard to comprehend. Significant differences in mean Lix scores were observed across all included languages (all P < 0.001). Articles released by non-profit organizations and pharmaceutical companies had the highest readability (P < 0.001). Low readability level was correlated with high article prevalence (R2 = 0.189, P = 0.031).

CONCLUSIONS

Although there was an abundance of online articles related to AD, the readability of the available information was low. As online health information has become essential in making shared decisions between patients and physicians, an improvement in AD-related materials is needed.
