Maxillary Aneurysmal Bone Cyst in a Young Dog-A Case Report

This case report describes an aneurysmal bone cyst in the maxilla of a young dog. It describes the clinical presentation, diagnostics, management, and successful outcome of this highly unusual case. Bone cysts are described as benign, cavitated lesions within bone that are lined by reactive tissues. There is no epithelial lining in the lesions. Bone cysts usually contain hemorrhage or serosanguinous fluid. They usually appear in the long bones, and present as a swelling with or without pain.

Facial Cellulitis and Skin Abscess: A Case of a Simple Bone Cyst in the Mandibular Bone

Cellulitis, abscess, or both are among the most common skin and soft tissue infections. Typically, cellulitis arises due to bacterial penetration through breaches in the skin's protective barrier. However, in cases of facial cellulitis, it is necessary to consider not only the breakdown of the skin barrier but also to differentiate odontogenic cellulitis. A prompt and accurate diagnosis of facial infections stemming from dental issues, coupled with the administration of antibiotics and dental interventions, played a crucial role in resolving this condition. Odontogenic cellulitis often develops as a result of dental caries. However, we experienced a case of odontogenic cellulitis and skin abscess occurring due to a simple bone cyst in the mandible, even in the absence of dental caries. Proper imaging examinations are crucial for diagnosis.

Analysis of the fluid contents of simple bone cyst in the mandible

Description of simple bone cyst (SBC) content has been controversial. This study aimed to assess and give a clearer picture of the SBC cavity contents. Between 2014 and 2016, 19 patients with SBC verified by histopathological examination were included in this study. SBC cavity content was investigated using clinical, radiographic, surgical, and laboratory findings. The difference in components among cavity fluid, blood, and serum was evaluated using a paired sample t-test for statistical analysis. All 19 SBC cases radiographically and surgically revealed a fluid-filled cavity. The patients’ average age was 21.3 ± 13.2 years, with no sex predominance found. SBCs were found mostly in the anterior mandible (n = 12, 63.2%). All lesions were filled with clear straw-colored or blood-colored floods with low concentration. Although the fluid components were similar to those in the blood and serum in the laboratory analysis, the statistical analysis revealed that the fluid components were not significantly different only for eosinophil (p = 0.43) and basophil (p = 0.06) counts as blood components and sodium (p = 0.76), potassium (p = 0.08), and chloride (p = 0.13) concentration as serum components. The results show that SBC is a fluid-filled cavity, with the cavity fluid being more likely similar to serum rather than blood regarding internal components.

Scalloped border as a possible diagnostic aid for differentiating jaw lesions: A pictorial essay

Purpose

The aim of this study was to introduce a category of jaw lesions comprising cysts and tumors associated with scalloped borders.

Materials and Methods

General search engines and specialized databases including Google Scholar, PubMed, PubMed Central, and Scopus, as well as an authoritative textbook, were used to find relevant studies by using keywords such as “jaw lesion,” “jaw disease,” “scalloping,” “scalloped border,” “scalloped margin,” “irregular border,” and “irregular margin.” Out of 289 articles, 252 records were removed because they were duplicates, did not have a relevant title, or did not mention the frequency of findings described using the term “scalloped border.” Finally, 37 closely related articles were chosen.

Results

According to the relevant literature, scalloped borders are found most frequently in ameloblastoma, followed by simple bone cyst, central giant cell granuloma, odontogenic keratocyst, and glandular odontogenic cyst.

Conclusion

The lesions most frequently reported to have scalloped borders are ameloblastoma, central giant cell granuloma, odontogenic keratocyst, simple bone cyst, and glandular odontogenic cyst.

Stafne's bone defects from Spain: report of four cases and brief archaeological literature review

OBJECTIVE

To present for the first time in the north-western Spanish osteological record prevalence data on Stafne's bone defect, to compare the results with those reported by other studies, and to increase the dataset for future inter-population comparisons.

MATERIAL

In all, 143 complete adult mandibles recovered from two necropolises were analyzed (n = 118, San Juan Bautista of Guardo, Palencia province, 16th-19th centuries; n = 25, Plaza del Grano, city of León, 12th-15th centuries).

METHODS

Differential diagnosis of the lesions was made through macroscopic and Computed Tomography (CT) analyses.

RESULTS

Four mandibles (n = 3, Guardo, Palencia; n = 1, León) presented bone cavities on the lingual aspect of the mandible below the mylohyoid channel, between the first molar and the angle of the mandible. CT scan showed unilateral well-defined unilocular oval/round concavities in the lingual mandibular cortex below the inferior alveolar canal. Neither the macroscopic nor the radiological characteristics are compatible with inflammatory or malignant pathology, favoring instead a diagnosis of Stafne's bone defect.

CONCLUSIONS

Four cases of Stafne's defects are added to the bioarchaeological inventory. The calculated prevalence is 2.54% for San Juan Bautista and 4% for Plaza del Grano, values in close agreement to those presented in other osteoarchaeological studies.

SIGNIFICANCE

The identification of all examples of Stafne's bone defects in past populations will contribute to elucidate which factors may be responsible for this trait's cultural, ecological, temporal, and geographical patterning.

LIMITATIONS

The skeletal samples are relatively small.

SUGGESTIONS FOR FURTHER RESEARCH

In future investigations of Stafne's bone defects, CT analysis of dry bone specimens is recommended, whenever possible.

Idiopathic Bone Cavity: Clinicopathologic Features from a Case Series with Emphasis on Differential Diagnosis of Chronic Apical Periodontitis

INTRODUCTION

Idiopathic bone cavity (IBC) is an uncommon bone lesion that usually affects youngsters as an unilocular radiolucency with predilection for the posterior mandible. Because the lesion is frequently located in proximity to the adjacent teeth, chronic apical periodontitis is commonly included as a differential diagnosis. The aim of the present study was to analyze the clinical and radiologic features of a series of IBCs diagnosed in a single service.

METHODS

All cases diagnosed as IBC were retrieved from the files of an oral pathology laboratory, and the clinical and radiologic characteristics were described with a focus on the differential diagnosis with chronic apical periodontitis.

RESULTS

Thirty cases composed the final sample. The mean age of the affected patients was 22 years old; there was no sex predilection, and most lesions were located on the posterior (47%) and anterior (43%) mandible. Most lesions presented as unilocular radiolucencies (87%), and 90% were located in close association with the adjacent teeth. The associated teeth presented no endodontic involvement, and all proved to be vital.

CONCLUSIONS

IBC usually affects young patients as an unilocular radiolucency in close association with the adjacent teeth. Careful radiologic analysis and vitality tests of the adjacent teeth are essential to rule out chronic apical periodontitis, thus avoiding any unnecessary endodontic treatment.
