Response of soil respiration to experimental warming in a highland barley of the Tibet

Effect of Experiment Warming on Soil Fungi Community of Medicago sativa, Elymus nutans and Hordeum vulgare in Tibet

The uncertainty response of soil fungi community to climate warming in alpine agroecosystems will limit our ability to fully exploit and utilize soil fungi resources, especially in alpine regions. In this study, a warming experiment was conducted in one perennial leguminous agroecosystem [i.e., alfalfa (Medicago sativa)], perennial gramineous agroecosystem (i.e., Elymus nutans) and annual gramineous agroecosystem [i.e., highland barley (Hordeum vulgare L)] in Tibet since 2016 to investigate the response of soil fungi community to climate warming. Soils at two layers (i.e., 0-10 cm and 10-20 cm) were collected in August 2017 to estimate soil fungi community based on the ITS method. The α-diversity, community composition and functional group abundance of soil fungi in the leguminous agroecosystem were more sensitive to climate warming. The α-diversity of soil fungi in the perennial gramineous agroecosystem were more sensitive to climate warming, but topology parameters of soil fungi species cooccurrence network in the annual gramineous agroecosystem were more sensitive to climate warming. Compared with 0-10 cm, soil fungal α-diversity, community composition and functional group abundance at 10-20 cm were more sensitive to climate warming. The topological parameters of soil fungi species cooccurrence network at 0-10 cm in the gramineous agroecosystem were more sensitive to climate warming, but those at 10-20 cm in the leguminous agroecosystem were more sensitive to climate warming. Warming increased the differences of soil fungi α-diversity and functional composition. For the Medicago sativa agroecosystem, warming increased the abundance of soil pathogenic fungi but decreased the abundance of soil symbiotic and saprophytic fungi at 10-20 cm. Therefore, responses of the soil fungi community to climate warming varied with agroecosystem types and soil depth. Climate warming can alter the differences of the soil fungi community among agroecosystems. Changes in soil fungi community caused by climate warming may be detrimental to the growth of alpine crops, at least for perennial Medicago sativa in Tibet.

Spatial and Temporal Variability and Driving Factors of Carbon Dioxide and Nitrous Oxide Fluxes in Alpine Wetland Ecosystems

Plants regulate greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes in wetland ecosystems, but the mechanisms of plant removal and plant species that contribute to GHG emissions remain unclear. In this study, the fluxes of carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrous oxide (N2O) were measured using the static chamber method from an island forest dominated by two different species, namely Betula platyphylla (BP) and Larix gmelinii (LG), in a marsh wetland in the Great Xing’an Mountains. Four sub-plots were established in this study: (1) bare soil after removing vegetation under BP (SBP); (2) bare soil after removing vegetation under LG (SLG); (3) soil with vegetation under BP (VSBP); and (4) soil with vegetation under LG (VSLG). Additionally, the contributions of the dark respiration from plant aerial parts under BP (VBP) and LG (VLG) to GHG fluxes were calculated. We found that the substantial spatial variability of CO2 fluxes ranged from −25.32 ± 15.45 to 187.20 ± 74.76 mg m−2 h−1 during the study period. The CO2 fluxes decreased in the order of SBP > VSLG > VSBP > SLG > VLG > VBP, indicating that vegetation species had a great impact on CO2 emissions. Particularly, the absence of vegetation promoted CO2 emission in both BP and LG. Additionally, CO2 fluxes showed dramatically seasonal variations, with high CO2 fluxes in late spring (May) and summer (June, July, and August), but low fluxes in late summer (August) and early autumn (September). Soil temperatures at 0−20 cm depth were better predictors of CO2 fluxes than deeper soil temperatures. N2O fluxes were varied in different treatments with the highest N2O fluxes in SLG and the lowest N2O fluxes in VBP. Meanwhile, no significant correlation was found between N2O fluxes and air or soil temperatures. Temporally, negative N2O fluxes were observed from June to October, indicating that soil N2O fluxes were reduced and emitted as N2, which was the terminal step of the microbial denitrification process. Most of the study sites were CO2 sources during the warm season and CO2 sinks in the cold season. Thus, soil temperature plays an important role in CO2 fluxes. We also found that the CO2 flux was positively related to pH in a 10 cm soil layer and positively related to moisture content (MC) in a 50 cm soil layer in VSBP and VSLG. However, the CO2 flux was negatively related to pH in a 30 cm soil layer in SBP and SLG. Our findings highlight the effects of vegetation removal on GHG fluxes, and aid in the scientific management of wetland plants.

Genome-Wide Association Mapping of Hulless Barely Phenotypes in Drought Environment

Drought stress is one of the main factors restricting hulless barley (Hordeum vulgare L. var. nudum Hook. f.) yield. Genome-wide association study was performed using 269 lines of hulless barley to identify single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers associated with drought-resistance traits. The plants were cultured under either normal or drought conditions, and various quantitative traits including shoot fresh weight, shoot dry weight, root fresh weight, root dry weight, leaf fresh weight, leaf saturated fresh weight, leaf dry weight, ratio of root and shoot fresh weight, ratio of root and shoot dry weight, shoot water loss rate, root water loss rate, leaf water content and leaf relative water content, and field phenotypes including main spike length, grain number per plant, grain weight per plant, thousand grain weight (TGW), main spike number, plant height, and effective spike number of plants were collected. After genotyping the plants, a total of 8,936,130 highly consistent population SNP markers were obtained with integrity > 0.5 and minor allele frequency > 0.05. Eight candidate genes potentially contributed to the hulless barley drought resistance were obtained at loci near significant SNPs. For example, EMB506, DCR, and APD2 genes for effective spike number of plants, ABCG11 gene for main spike number (MEN), CLPR2 gene for main spike length, YIP4B gene for root and shoot dry weight (RSWD), and GLYK and BTS genes for TGW. The SNPs and candidate genes identified in this study will be useful in hulless barley breeding under drought resistance.

Experimental warming reduces ecosystem resistance and resilience to severe flooding in a wetland

Climate warming and extreme hydrological events are threatening the sustainability of wetlands across the globe. However, whether climate warming will amplify or diminish the impact of extreme flooding on wetland ecosystems is unknown. Here, we show that climate warming significantly reduced wetland resistance and resilience to a severe flooding event via a 6-year warming experiment. We first found that warming rapidly altered plant community structure by increasing the dominance of low-canopy species. Then, we showed that warming reduced the resistance and resilience of vegetation productivity to a 72-cm flooding event. Last, we detected slower postflooding carbon processes, such as gross ecosystem productivity, soil respiration, and soil methane emission, under the warming treatment. Our results demonstrate how severe flooding can destabilize wetland vegetation structure and ecosystem function under climate warming. These findings indicate an enhanced footprint of extreme hydrological events in wetland ecosystems in a warmer climate.

Warming homogenizes apparent temperature sensitivity of ecosystem respiration

Warming-induced carbon loss through terrestrial ecosystem respiration (Re) is likely getting stronger in high latitudes and cold regions because of the more rapid warming and higher temperature sensitivity of Re (Q ₁₀). However, it is not known whether the spatial relationship between Q ₁₀ and temperature also holds temporally under a future warmer climate. Here, we analyzed apparent Q ₁₀ values derived from multiyear observations at 74 FLUXNET sites spanning diverse climates and biomes. We found warming-induced decline in Q ₁₀ is stronger at colder regions than other locations, which is consistent with a meta-analysis of 54 field warming experiments across the globe. We predict future warming will shrink the global variability of Q ₁₀ values to an average of 1.44 across the globe under a high emission trajectory (RCP 8.5) by the end of the century. Therefore, warming-induced carbon loss may be less than previously assumed because of Q ₁₀ homogenization in a warming world.

Effect of precipitation on respiration of different reconstructed soils

Respiration and hydrothermal characteristics of four reconstructed soils in barren gravel land at a site in Shaanxi Province were monitored before, during, and after two precipitation events. Both precipitation events significantly reduced soil temperature but there were great fluctuations in temperature after the second precipitation event. Moreover, precipitation increased the moisture content of the reconstructed soils. Before the first precipitation event, the soil volumetric water content was relatively stable, while it gradually decreased before the second precipitation event. The first precipitation event significantly stimulated the respiration rate for all reconstructed soils, while the second precipitation event generally inhibited it, especially during the precipitation event. The key factors influencing respiration for different reconstructed soils were different between the precipitation events. When soil volumetric water content showed persistent variation before precipitation, soil moisture was the most influential factor. In contrast, if water content was stable, soil temperature was more influential. Soil moisture and temperature jointly influenced soil respiration before, during, and after the precipitation event, while soil moisture was always the most influential factor after precipitation.

Soil warming increases soil temperature sensitivity in subtropical Forests of SW China

Background

Soil respiration (R_S) plays an important role in the concentration of atmospheric CO₂ and thus in global climate patterns. Due to the feedback between R_S and climate, it is important to investigate R_S responses to climate warming.

Methods

A soil warming experiment was conducted to explore R_S responses and temperature sensitivity (Q₁₀) to climate warming in subtropical forests in Southwestern China, and infrared radiators were used to simulate climate warming.

Results

Warming treatment increased the soil temperature and R_S value by 1.4 °C and 7.3%, respectively, and decreased the soil water level by 4.2% (%/%). Both one- and two-factor regressions showed that warming increased the Q₁₀ values by 89.1% and 67.4%, respectively. The effects of water on Q₁₀show a parabolic relationship to the soil water sensitivity coefficient. Both R_S and Q₁₀ show no acclimation to climate warming, suggesting that global warming will accelerate soil carbon release.

Impact of diurnal unsymmetrical warming on soil respiration in an agroecological system of the Lhasa region

Purpose

The impact of diurnal unsymmetrical rise in temperature on soil respiration (R_s) is not fully understood; thus, we explored such a warming influence on R_s in an agroecological system of the Lhasa.

Materials and methods

A field warming experiment (C: control; DW: daytime warming; NW: nighttime warming; DW+NW: daytime plus nighttime warming) was carried out in a naked barley ecological system.

Results and discussion

The DW, NW and DW+NW treatments dramatically increased soil temperature and decreased soil moisture but did not markedly modify R_s. The effects of DW and NW on soil respiration sensitivity (Q₁₀) during the daytime and nighttime were different; they had no effects on daytime Q₁₀ of R_s, but a significant inhibitory effect on nighttime Q₁₀ of R_s.

Conclusions

A diurnal unsymmetrical rise in temperature brought about different results for the Q₁₀ of R_s but did not cause changes in R_s under different experimental treatments in agroecological systems of the Lhasa.

Dynamics of Soil Respiration in Alpine Wetland Meadows Exposed to Different Levels of Degradation in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, China

The effects of degradation of alpine wetland meadow on soil respiration (Rs) and the sensitivity of Rs to temperature (Q10) were measured in the Napa Lake region of Shangri-La on the southeastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Rs was measured for 24 h during each of three different stages of the growing season on four different degraded levels. The results showed: (1) peak Rs occurred at around 5:00 p.m., regardless of the degree of degradation and growing season stage, with the maximum Rs reaching 10.05 μmol·m-2·s-1 in non-degraded meadows rather than other meadows; (2) the daily mean Rs value was 7.14-7.86 μmol·m-2·s-1 during the mid growing season in non-degraded meadows, and declined by 48.4-62.6% when degradation increased to the severely degraded level; (3) Q10 ranged from 7.1-11.3 in non-degraded meadows during the mid growing season, 5.5-8.0 and 6.2-8.2 during the early and late growing seasons, respectively, and show a decline of about 50% from the non-degraded meadows to severely degraded meadows; (4) Rs was correlated significantly with soil temperature at a depth of 0-5 cm (p < 0.05) on the diurnal scale, but not at the seasonal scale; (5) significant correlations were found between Rs and soil organic carbon (SOC), between biomass and SOC, and between Q10 and Rs (p < 0.05), which indicates that biomass and SOC potentially impact Q10. The results suggest that vegetation degradation impact both Rs and Q10 significantly. Also, we speculated that Q10 of alpine wetland meadow is probable greater at the boundary region than inner region of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and shoule be a more sensitive indicator in the studying of climate change in this zone.

Effects of experimental warming and increased precipitation on soil respiration in an alpine meadow in the Northern Tibetan Plateau

Uncertainty on the response of soil respiration (R_s) to warming and increased precipitation on the Tibetan Plateau can limit our ability to predict how alpine ecosystems will respond to future climate change. Based on a warming (control, low- and high-level) and increased precipitation (control, low- and high-level) experiment, the response of R_s to experimental warming and increased precipitation was examined in an alpine meadow in the Northern Tibetan Plateau from 2014 to 2017. The low-level warming increased soil temperature (T_s) by 1.19°C and decreased soil moisture (SM) by 0.02m³m^-3, whereas the high-level warming increased T_s by 2.88°C and decreased SM by 0.04m³m^-3 over the four growing seasons in 2014-2017. The low- and high-level increased precipitation did not affect T_s, but increased SM by 0.02m³m^-3 and 0.04m³m^-3, respectively, over the four growing seasons in 2014-2017. No significant main and interactive effects of experimental warming and increased precipitation on R_s were observed over the four growing seasons in 2014-2017. In contrast, there was a significant inter-annual variation of R_s in 2014-2017. There was a marginally significant quadratic relationship between the effect of experimental warming on R_s and warming magnitude. There was a negligible difference of R_s between the low- and high-level increased precipitation over the four growing seasons in 2014-2017 and R_s also showed a quadratic relationship with precipitation. Therefore, experimental warming and increased precipitation did not change R_s and R_s responded nonlinearly to experimental warming and increased precipitation in the alpine meadow in the Northern Tibetan Plateau. Growing season precipitation may play a more important role than experimental warming and increased precipitation in affecting R_s in the alpine meadow in the Northern Tibetan Plateau.
