Abstract
Objective To assess the feasibility of a nurse-initiated brief cognitive behavioral strategy (CBS) intervention program targeting pain and fatigue symptoms among the pain and fatigue/anorexia symptom clusters experienced by patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Methods In this single-group, pre-post test study, 15 NSCLC outpatients undergoing medical treatment participated. After providing informed consent, participants completed a baseline questionnaire and received a booklet detailing brief cognitive-behavioral techniques (e.g., relaxation, symptom-management strategies), exercise therapy, and related tools. Follow-up calls were made five times over a 10-week period to monitor adherence and assess symptom severity changes. Results Ten participants (66.7%) completed the program. For pain management, 86.7% of participants chose deep breathing as a relaxation technique, and 80.0% used exercise to alleviate fatigue. Median symptom severities decreased from baseline to week 10 as follows: pain (2.00 to 1.00), sadness (1.00 to 0.00), and anxiety (1.00 to 0.50). Conclusions The naurse-initiated brief CBS intervention program is feasible and clinically relevant for patients with advanced NSCLC undergoing standard treatment in Japan.

Abstract
PURPOSE Breast cancer survivors following disease-modifying treatment frequently experience multiple-concurrent symptoms (Jansana et al. in Int J Cancer 149(10):1755 1767, 2021), negatively impacting their quality of life and increasing the risk of polypharmacy (Alwhaibi et al. in J Oncol Pharm Pract 26(5):1052 1059, 2020). This study evaluates the feasibility and acceptability of acupuncture for the management of the pain-fatigue-sleep disturbance-numbness/tingling symptom cluster in breast cancer survivors, and investigates relationships between the symptom cluster and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) syndrome diagnosis. METHODS This was a single-arm, pre-test/post-test feasibility trial conducted at Chris O'Brien Lifehouse Hospital, Australia. Breast cancer survivors who completed treatment and experienced clinically significant levels of two or more symptoms (pain, fatigue, sleep disturbance, numbness/tingling) were eligible to participate in the individualized, pragmatic 6-week acupuncture intervention. The primary outcome was feasibility and acceptability. Effectiveness was explored using a symptom cluster mean score. RESULTS Twenty women enrolled in the study over an 11-week period and 90% completed the study. Most women agreed or completely agreed that acupuncture was feasible (85%), acceptable (90%), and appropriate (90%). Both mean and composite symptom cluster scores were significantly reduced (p < 0.001), as were individual symptom scores in fatigue (p < 0.001), sleep disturbance (p = 0.04), and numbness/tingling (p = 0.01). TCM syndromes most closely associated with this symptom cluster were Spleen qi deficiency and Heart fire. No adverse events were reported. CONCLUSION This study demonstrated that acupuncture was safe and feasible, justifying a powered randomized control trial. Preliminary findings suggest beneficial effects of acupuncture for the management of the pain-fatigue-sleep disturbance-numbness/tingling symptom cluster for women with breast cancer. TCM syndromes identified in this trial may be used to guide acupuncture treatment protocols. CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION This trial was registered with the Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry (ACTRN12622000590763) on 21 April 2022.

Abstract
The use of non-pharmacological strategies to complement pharmacological approaches can enhance cancer pain management by promoting patient autonomy and increasing management effectiveness. This study aimed to explore the required behavioral adaptations and situational barriers that cancer patients encounter when utilizing non-pharmacological strategies to manage pain. We adopted an exploratory-descriptive qualitative research approach, purposive sampling, and semi-structured interview guidelines to conduct face-to-face interviews with 18 cancer patients experiencing moderate or severe levels of worst pain. Data were analyzed using inductive content analysis to explore patients' experiences. Five themes described the behavioral adaptations of patients using non-pharmacological strategies to deal with cancer pain: finding complementary therapies, utilizing assistive skills, adapting to assistive skills, diverting attention, and seeking help. Situational barriers faced by patients include being in the workplace or in a climate-affected environment. Behavioral adaptation is necessary for non-pharmacological strategies to coping with cancer pain. The behavioral skills can help the patients to overcome situational barriers to engagement with these strategies. Thus, health professionals are expected to help the patients acquire adequate behavioral adaptation and skills for self-pain management, and assess the effectiveness of the strategies.

Abstract
Pain is subjective, warranting tailored responses in pharmacotherapy and nursing support. Despite this, the evidence for suitable nursing support for pain is not well established in terminally ill patients such as those with cancer; therefore, it is necessary to provide support in consideration of changes in physical symptoms and quality of life. However, interventional studies for such patients are often difficult. There have been no comprehensive studies to date on non-pharmacological support that can be implemented by nurses. Therefore, with the aim of examining nursing support applicable at the end of life, this scoping review comprehensively mapped nursing support for pain in cancer patients at all stages of the disease. This study complies with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement and the Arksey and O'Malley framework. All available published articles from the time of database establishment to January 31, 2022, were systematically searched for in PubMed, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), CENTRAL, and the Ichushi Web database of the Japanese Society of Medical Abstracts. Overall, 10,385 articles were screened, and 72 were finally included. Both randomized controlled trials (RCTs) (n = 62) and non-RCTs (n = 10) were included. Twenty-two types of nursing support were identified. Eighteen of them showed positive results; five of them were provided only to terminally ill patients, three of which were effective, namely, comfort care, foot bath, and combined therapy. It is important to examine the applicability of types of nursing support in clinical practice in the future.

Abstract
Background Systemic sclerosis is a heterogenous disease in which little is known about patterns of patient-reported symptom clusters. We aimed to identify classes of individuals with similar anxiety, depression, fatigue, sleep disturbance, and pain symptoms and to evaluate associated sociodemographic and disease-related characteristics. Methods This multi-centre cross-sectional study used baseline data from Scleroderma Patient-centered Intervention Network Cohort participants enrolled from 2014 to 2020. Eligible participants completed the PROMIS-29 v2.0 measure. Latent profile analysis was used to identify homogeneous classes of participants based on patterns of anxiety, depression, fatigue, sleep disturbance, and pain scores. Sociodemographic and disease-related characteristics were compared across classes. Findings Among 2212 participants, we identified five classes, including four classes with "Low" (565 participants, 26%), "Normal" (651 participants, 29%), "High" (569 participants, 26%), or "Very High" (193 participants, 9%) symptom levels across all symptoms. Participants in a fifth class, "High Fatigue/Sleep/Pain and Low Anxiety/Depression" (234 participants, 11%) had similar levels of fatigue, sleep disturbance, and pain as in the "High" class but low anxiety and depression symptoms. There were significant and substantive trends in sociodemographic characteristics (age, education, race or ethnicity, marital or partner status) and increasing disease severity (diffuse disease, tendon friction rubs, joint contractures, gastrointestinal symptoms) across severity-based classes. Disease severity and sociodemographic characteristics of "High Fatigue/Sleep/Pain and Low Anxiety/Depression" class participants were similar to the "High" severity class. Interpretation Most people with systemic sclerosis can be classified by levels of patient-reported symptoms, which are consistent across symptoms and highly associated with sociodemographic and disease-related variables, except for one group which reports low mental health symptoms despite high levels of other symptoms and substantial disease burden. Studies are needed to better understand resilience in systemic sclerosis and to identify and facilitate implementation of cognitive and behavioural strategies to improve coping and overall quality of life. Abstract
BACKGROUND We explored the use of a novel smart phone-based application (APP) for delivery and monitoring of meditation to treat mood symptoms experienced by cancer patients. METHODS We assessed the feasibility of using a meditation delivery and tracking APP over 2-weeks and its impact on cancer patients' self-reported anxiety and depression. Outpatients reporting depression and/or anxiety were recruited and randomized to the APP or waitlist control group. Assessments included an expectancy scale, exit survey, mood rating before and after each meditation, and the Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS-FS), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) at baseline and after 2-weeks. The primary aim was to assess feasibility; secondary aims included satisfaction with the APP, association between meditation frequency and length with self-reported symptoms, and change in symptom measures (symptoms, anxiety, depression, and sleep). RESULTS Our study included 35 participants (17 meditation group; 18 controls) who were primarily female (94%) with breast cancer (60%). The 61% enrollment rate and 71% adherence rate met pre-specified feasibility criteria. Most meditation group participants described the APP as "Useful" to "Very Useful" and would "Probably" or "Definitely" recommend its use. Mixed model analysis revealed a statistically significant association between meditation length (5, 10, or 15 minutes) and change in anxiety, with 15-minute sessions associated with greater reductions in anxiety. In the exit survey, more meditation group vs. control group participants reported improved focus, mood, and sleep. Study groups differed significantly by ESAS fatigue score change; the meditation group decreased a median of 1.5 pts (IQR 2.5) and the control group increased a median of 0.5 points (IQR 2). The meditation group, but not the control group, experienced statistically significant improvement in ESAS fatigue, depression, anxiety, appetite, and physical, psychological, and global distress. Change in PSQI and HADS anxiety and depression scores did not reveal any statistically significant between-group differences. CONCLUSIONS This pilot study demonstrated the feasibility and acceptability of a meditation APP for cancer patients. Meditation APP users reported improvement in several measures of symptom distress. Future studies should explore ways to enhance the APP's usability and clinical benefit.

Abstract
Introduction The incidence of breast cancer in Indonesia is the highest among types of cancer in women, with an estimated pain prevalence of 40%-89%. More than 50% of cancer patients suffer from pain that has not been resolved. Cancer pain's impact will affect the comfort level and quality of life. Objectives The purpose of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of DRM Pain Relief on the degree of pain, comfort, and quality of life among breast cancer patients. Methods The research was a true experimental study with pre-test and post-test designs with a control group. The population was all breast cancer patients attending hospitals in Semarang and Pekalongan Districts. The research subjects were 64 respondents who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Respondents were selected randomly and divided into two groups, namely 32 in the treatment group (DRM Pain Relief application) and 32 in the control group (only received drugs as conventional therapy in the hospital). Data were analyzed using a multivariate test. Results The application of DRM Pain Relief was effective in reducing the degree of pain (p < .001), and effectively increasing comfort (p < .001), as well as improving the quality of life of breast cancer patients in the components of improvement in symptom status, functional status, and global quality of life with p-value <.001, .003, < .001, respectively. Conclusion The DRM Pain Relief effectively reduces the degree of pain, increases comfort, and improves the quality of life of breast cancer patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients after orthopedic surgery often experience the pain, anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbances, which can be greatly reduced by non-pharmacologic interventions as alternative therapies. Randomized controlled trials of nonpharmacologic interventions for anxiety, depression, sleep quality, and pain in patients after orthopedic surgery have been reported, but the results may be conflicting. Evidence to determine the optimal non-pharmacological intervention with a high efficacy is limited. This study aims to assess the effects of non-pharmacologic interventions on the bone anxiety, depression, sleep quality, and pain in patients after orthopedic surgery through a network meta-analysis, thus providing guidance in clinical application. METHODS A systematic search of randomized controlled trials reporting the effects of non-pharmacological interventions on anxiety, depression, sleep quality and pain after orthopedic surgery published before October 2021 will be searched in Wanfang, VIP Information Chinese Journal Service Platform, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese BioMedicine Literature Database, Pubmed, Embase, Cochrane, and Web of science. Two reviewers will be independently responsible for study selection, quality appraisal, and data extraction. Stata 14.0 software will be used to perform the network meta-analysis. RESULTS The findings of this research will be reported in a recognized journal. CONCLUSION This meta-analysis will provide the stronger evidence for non-pharmacological interventions on alleviating bone anxiety, depression, sleep quality, and pain in patients after orthopedic surgery, which will help clinicians and decision makers in their choices.Open Science Framework registration number: DOI 10.17605/OSF.IO/2SCBD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The use and impact of guided imagery in the acute care setting is limited. AIMS The purpose of this quality improvement project was to evaluate the feasibility of a guided imagery intervention to change pain scores, anxiety scores, and opioid analgesia usage among hospitalized adults in an acute care setting. DESIGN Quality improvement project using three measurements (baseline, 24 hours, and 48 hours). SETTINGS Acute care hospital. PARTICIPANTS/SUBJECTS Adult inpatients referred to an APRN-led pain management service. METHODS The intervention was the use of a 30-minute guided imagery recording delivered via MP3 player which patients used twice daily. RESULTS Limited changes were seen in pain scores, with no statistically significant results (p = .449). Statistically significant reductions were found in both anxiety scores (p < .001) and opioid analgesia usage (p = .043). CONCLUSIONS Findings from this quality improvement project support the impact of guided imagery on anxiety and opioid analgesia use. Changes in pain scores were not demonstrated in this project. Additional research with a rigorous design is needed to determine cause and effect conclusions. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS The use of guided imagery as an adjunctive intervention for pain control may engage and empower the patient in self-care activities, which may have an impact on how care is perceived. Guided imagery is a low-cost, easily implemented approach that can be incorporated into patient care to reduce anxiety and, potentially, opioid analgesia use.

Abstract
Background: The presence of lung cancer is almost always associated with pain, a symptom that causes severe distress in patients. Although many pharmacological methods are available to manage pain in this oncologic population, the medications often cause undesirable sideeffects and inadequate relief. Nonpharmacological interventions can be used as adjuvants to pharmacological interventions in reducing pain and increasing quality of life. Objectives: The purpose of this review is to compare the efficacy of nonpharmacological interventions in reducing pain in lung cancer patients. Materials and Methods: This is a systematic review study guided by the Preferred Reporting Items of Systematic reviews and Meta-Analysis Protocol. Interventions identified in the present systematic review have been categorized as physical treatment, technologybased, cognitive behavioral, coping, and coaching. Results: Results indicate that the nonpharmacological interventions such as physical treatment interventions, selfmanagement and coaching interventions, cognitive behavioral interventions, and technologybased interventions or coping skills interventions had limited and shortterm effects on alleviating pain among the patients. However, previous studies have provided limited evidence regarding nonpharmacologic therapy due to the lack of a comparison group, small sample sizes, and lack of longterm followup periods to determine whether sustained effects are feasible. Conclusion: Healthcare professionals should consider additional research on the added advantage of utilizing the nonpharmacological interventions as an adjunct option while managing pain in lung cancer patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To examine the feasibility, acceptability, and effects of a dyad-based uncertainty management intervention for breast cancer, including tailored information and coping skills training. SAMPLE & SETTING 16 patient-partner dyads experiencing breast cancer were enrolled from a midwestern comprehensive cancer center. METHODS & VARIABLES A single-group pre-/post-test design was used, and descriptive statistics and Cohen's d were calculated. Measures were completed before the intervention and during each treatment cycle. Feasibility, acceptability, fidelity, uptake, and outcome variables (uncertainty, dyadic coping, family functioning) were included. RESULTS 16 dyads were enrolled during a 13-month period; 15 dyads completed the training for the study, and 13 dyads completed all study activities. Overall, participants reported satisfaction with the intervention. Small to medium effect sizes were observed across the outcomes. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING This study highlights the need for nurses to help couples manage uncertainty related to new cancer treatment. Tailored interventions can allow nurses to use their time efficiently by focusing on individuals' actual needs.

Abstract
In recent years, virtual reality (VR) has become an interesting alternative to traditional exposure-based therapies for many symptoms. VR involves immersion in a computer-generated virtual environment that minimizes avoidance and facilitates emotional processing. The objective of this systematic review is to evaluate evidence on the intervention effect of VR on anxiety, depression, fatigue, and pain. The research strategy of this systematic review included three electronic databases (MEDLINE/PubMed, Cochrane Library, and ScienceDirect) based on predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Published quantitative studies from 2000 to 2020 were identified, which examined the effect of VR intervention on four different symptoms related to symptoms experienced by cancer patients. Quality assessments, data extractions, and analysis were completed on all included studies. A total of 882 titles and abstracts were screened, and 23 studies were included in the review. The studies were grouped according to the symptoms: anxiety and depression, fatigue, and pain. The review showed that VR intervention is more effective compared with the control (i.e., standard care) for anxiety, depression, fatigue, and pain. VR can reduce effectively these symptoms in different contexts and diseases, including cancer. The evidence suggests that there is value in exploring this intervention as a potential crossover treatment for these symptoms in patients. This study contributes to evidence that distraction is an effective symptom management mechanism. The findings are congruent with the theoretical framework, supporting the premise that VR, as an emotion-focused distraction intervention, decreases the severity of these symptoms.

Abstract
Good symptom management in oncology is associated with improved patient and family quality of life, greater treatment compliance, and may even offer survival advantages. With population growth and aging, the proportion of patients with multiple symptoms-both related and unrelated to their cancer-is anticipated to increase, supporting calls for a more routine and integrated approach to symptom management. This article presents a summary of the literature for the use of symptom assessment tools and reviews the management of four common and distressing symptoms commonly experienced by people with advanced cancer: pain, breathlessness, nausea and vomiting, and fatigue. We also discuss the role of palliative care in supporting a holistic approach to symptom management throughout the cancer trajectory.

Abstract
Sleep is important for our health and well-being and is especially pertinent to orthopedic surgery because it has been shown to play a role in pain tolerance. Knowing the benefits of sleep, one way to positively impact patients’ pain and recovery post-surgery is to encourage sleep. Zolpidem, a pharmacologic sleep aid, has been shown to decrease opioid consumption, reduce pain, and increase quality of life when briefly used after orthopedic procedures. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), a nonpharmacologic sleep aid, has been shown to increase the quality of sleep and sleep time, decrease sleep onset latency, decrease pain, and help patients maintain those gains. Because of the dangers of opioids, it is important for physicians to search for alternative methods to manage their patients’ pain, like zolpidem and CBT-I. More research is needed to determine which method may be the most efficacious and how these can be integrated into patient care.

Abstract
Despite the plethora of treatments available for patients with fibromyalgia, there is insufficient evidence to date as to what the ideal treatment approach is. This study sought to determine the effectiveness of a home program of audio-recorded guided imagery relaxation on people with fibromyalgia. This experimental 8-week longitudinal trial design was undertaken with 60 people diagnosed with fibromyalgia who were randomly assigned to either a guided imagery intervention group or a control group. Pain at tender points, anxiety, self-efficacy, quality of sleep, quality of life, and the impact of the fibromyalgia were determined at baseline, at 4 weeks, and at 8 weeks. After the guided imagery intervention, we found significant differences regarding trait anxiety, sleep quality, and tenderness at some of the tender points. There is a need, therefore, to develop and evaluate interventions that may enhance the quality of life of those affected by this disorder.

Abstract
Objectives We examined the effects of magnanimous therapy on psychological coping, adjustment, living function, and survival rate in patients with advanced lung cancer. Methods Patients with advanced lung cancer (n = 145) matched by demographics and medical variables were randomly assigned to an individual computer magnanimous therapy group (ic-mt), a group computer magnanimous therapy group (gc-mt), or a control group (ctrl). Over 2 weeks, the ic-mt and gc-mt groups received eight 40-minute sessions of ic-mt or gc-mt respectively, plus usual care; the ctrl group received only usual care. The Cancer Coping Modes Questionnaire (ccmq), the Psychological Adjustment Scale for Cancer Patients (pascp), and the Functional Living Index-Cancer (flic) were assessed at baseline and 2 weeks later. The relationships of changes in those indicators were analyzed, and survival rates were compared. Results The psychological coping style, adjustment, and living function of the ic-mt and gc-mt groups improved significantly after the intervention (p < 0.01). After 2 weeks, significant (p < 0.01) differences between the treatment groups and the ctrl group in coping style, adjustment, and living function suggested successful therapy. The changes in living function were correlated with changes in psychological coping and adjustment. No difference in efficacy between ic-mt and gc-mt was observed. The survival rate was 31.84% in the ic-mt group and 9.375% in the ctrl group at 2 years after the intervention. Conclusions In patients with advanced lung cancer, ic-mt and gc-mt were associated with positive short-term effects on psychological coping style, adjustment, and living function, although the magnitude of the effect did not differ significantly between the intervention approaches. The effects on living function are partly mediated by improvements in psychological coping and adjustment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Patients receiving treatment for advanced cancer suffer significant symptom burden, including co-occurring pain, fatigue, and sleep disturbance. There is limited evidence for effective interventions targeting this common symptom cluster. METHODS A randomized controlled trial of a brief cognitive-behavioral strategies (CBS) intervention was conducted. A sample of 164 patients with advanced cancer receiving chemotherapy practiced imagery, relaxation, and distraction exercises or listened to cancer education recordings (attention-control) to manage co-occurring pain, fatigue, and sleep disturbance over a 9-week period. Symptom cluster severity, distress, and interference with daily life were measured at baseline and 3, 6, and 9 weeks. We also evaluated the moderating influence of imaging ability and number of concurrent symptoms, and mediating effects of changes in stress, anxiety, outcome expectancy, and perceived control over symptoms. RESULTS Compared with the cancer education condition, participants receiving the CBS intervention reported less symptom cluster distress at week 6 (M = 1.82 vs 2.15 on a 0-4 scale, P < .05). No other group differences were statistically significant. The number of concurrent symptoms moderated the intervention effect on symptom cluster interference. Changes in stress, outcome expectancy, and perceived control mediated the extent of intervention effects on symptom outcomes, primarily at weeks 6 and 9. CONCLUSIONS The brief CBS intervention had limited effects in this trial. However, findings regarding potential mediators affirm hypothesized mechanisms and provide insight into ways to strengthen future interventions to reduce the suffering associated with co-occurring pain, fatigue, and sleep disturbance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with gastrointestinal tract (GIT) cancer undergoing chemotherapy often experience several symptoms that constitute symptom clusters and can cause patients to suffer. Effective interventions are lacking for this kind of patients. OBJECTIVE The aims of this study were to test the feasibility and acceptability of a cognitive-behavioral (CB) intervention developed for Chinese patients with GIT cancer undergoing chemotherapy and to estimate the efficacy of the intervention for symptom clusters. METHODS In this pilot, quasi-randomized controlled trial, 40 patients were assigned to the CB intervention or control group. The CB intervention, considering characteristics of patients and Chinese culture, contained 4 sections including cognitive reframing, cancer-diet education, relaxation, and exercise techniques. Symptom clusters, illness perception, anxiety, and depression were measured. RESULTS Thirty-nine patients (97.5%) completed the study program and expressed willingness to follow the intervention. Compared with the control group, all outcomes were improved (all P < .05) in the CB group after the intervention, except for the gastrointestinal symptom cluster (t = 0.25, P = .802). In the CB group, the scores of all outcomes (all P < .05) decreased except for depression (t = 1.76, P = .095). CONCLUSION The CB intervention is partially feasible and acceptable. It may also help to improve part of the symptom clusters of Chinese patients with GIT cancer undergoing chemotherapy. However, some modifications are needed in future studies to better test effectiveness. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE Symptom management remains a major problem in clinical nursing. Such a CB intervention can be beneficial to the clinical management of symptom clusters.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the feasibility of conducting a trial of a psychoeducational intervention involving the provision of tailored information and coaching to improve management of a cancer-related symptom cluster (fatigue, pain, and sleep disturbance) and reduce symptom cluster impacts on patient health outcomes in the Vietnamese context and to undertake a preliminary evaluation of the intervention. METHODS A parallel-group single-blind pilot quasi-experimental trial was conducted with 102 cancer patients in one Vietnamese hospital. The intervention group received one face-to-face session and two phone sessions delivered by a nurse one week apart, and the comparison group received usual care. Patient outcomes were measured at baseline before the chemotherapy cycle and immediately preceding the next chemotherapy cycle. Separate linear mixed models were used to evaluate the impact of the intervention on total symptom cluster severity, symptom scores, functional status, depressive symptoms, and health-related quality of life. RESULTS The study design was feasible with a recruitment rate of 22.6% and attrition rate of 9.8%. Compared to the control group, the intervention group showed a significant reduction in symptom cluster severity, fatigue severity, fatigue interference, sleep disturbance, depression, and anxiety. Significant differences were not observed for pain severity, pain interference, functional status, and health-related quality of life. The intervention was acceptable to the study population, with a high attendance rate of 78% and adherence rate of 95.7%. CONCLUSION On the basis of the present study findings, future randomized controlled trials are needed to test the effectiveness of a symptom cluster psychoeducational intervention in Vietnam.

Abstract
This study was conducted with the aim of comparing the effects of Benson muscle relaxation and nature sounds on fatigue in patients with heart failure. Fatigue and exercise intolerance as prevalent symptoms experienced by patients with heart failure can cause the loss of independence in the activities of daily living. It can also damage self-care and increase dependence to others, which subsequently can reduce the quality of life. This randomized controlled clinical trial was conducted in an urban area of Iran in 2016. Samples were consisted of 105 hospitalized patients with heart failure chosen using a convenience sampling method. They were assigned to relaxation, nature sounds, and control groups using a randomized block design. In addition to routine care, the Benson muscle relaxation and nature sounds groups received interventions in mornings and evenings twice a day for 20 minutes within 3 consecutive days. A 9-item questionnaire was used to collect data regarding fatigue before and after the interventions. Relaxation and nature sounds reduced fatigue in patients with heart failure in comparison to the control group. However, no statistically significant difference was observed between the interventions. Benson muscle relaxation and nature sounds are alternative methods for the reduction of fatigue in patients with heart failure. They are inexpensive and easy to be administered and upon patients' preferences can be used by nurses along with routine nursing interventions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND High rates of sleep-wake difficulties have been found in patients with cancer receiving palliative care. Pharmacotherapy is the most frequently used treatment option to manage these difficulties despite numerous adverse effects and the absence of empirical evidence of its efficacy and innocuity in palliative care. OBJECTIVE This pilot study aimed to assess the feasibility and acceptability of a cognitive-behavioral and environmental intervention (CBT-E) to improve insomnia and hypersomnolence in patients with a poor functioning level and to collect preliminary data on its effects. METHODS Six patients with cancer receiving palliative care (Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group score 2-3), who had insomnia and/or hypersomnolence, received 1 CBT-E individual session at home. They applied the strategies for 3 weeks. Patients completed the Insomnia Severity Index, the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, a daily sleep diary, and a 24-hour actigraphic recording (7 days) at pretreatment and posttreatment, in addition to a semistructured interview (posttreatment). RESULTS Participants found strategies easy to apply most of the time, and none was rated as impossible to use because of their health condition. However, their adherence and satisfaction toward CBT-E were highly variable. Results on the effects of CBT-E were heterogeneous, but improvements were observed in patients with a persistent insomnia disorder. CONCLUSIONS The CBT-E protocol tested among this highly selected sample was fairly well received and suggested positive outcomes in some patients, particularly those with an insomnia complaint alone. IMPLICATIONS Efforts should be pursued to adapt CBT-E and develop other nonpharmacological interventions, in order to provide an alternative to pharmacotherapy for sleep-wake difficulties in this population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep fragmentation is common among those with advanced serious illness. Nonpharmacological interventions to improve sleep have few, if any, adverse effects and are often underutilized in these settings. OBJECTIVE We aimed to summarize the literature related to nonpharmacological interventions to improve sleep among adults with advanced serious illness. METHODS We systematically searched six electronic databases for literature reporting sleep outcomes associated with nonpharmacological interventions that included participants with advanced serious illness during the period of 1996-2016. RESULTS From a total of 2731 results, 42 studies met the inclusion criteria. A total of 31 individual interventions were identified, each evaluated individually and some in combination with other interventions. Twelve of these studies employed either multiple interventions within an intervention category (n = 8) or a multicomponent intervention consisting of interventions from two or more categories (n = 5). The following intervention categories emerged: sleep hygiene (1), environmental (6), physical activity (4), complementary health practices (11), and mind-body practices (13). Of the 42 studies, 22 demonstrated a statistically significant, positive impact on sleep and represented each of the categories. The quality of the studies varied considerably, with 17 studies classified as strong, 17 as moderate, and 8 as weak. CONCLUSIONS Several interventions have been demonstrated to improve sleep in these patients. However, the small number of studies and wide variation of individual interventions within each category limit the generalizability of findings. Further studies are needed to assess interventions and determine effectiveness and acceptability.

. OBJECTIVES This systematic review critically appraises the strength and quality of the empirical evidence for nonpharmacologic interventions in reducing chronic cancer pain.
. METHODS Intervention studies were critically appraised and summarized by an Oncology Nursing Society Putting Evidence Into Practice team of RNs, advanced practice nurses, and nurse scientists. A level of evidence and a practice recommendation was assigned to each intervention.
. FINDINGS Based on evidence, recommended interventions to reduce chronic cancer pain are celiac plexus block for pain related to pancreatic and abdominal cancers and radiation therapy for bone pain. Although psychoeducational interventions are considered likely to be effective, the effective components of these interventions and their dose and duration need to be determined through additional research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pain is a challenge for patients following hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HCT). OBJECTIVE This study aimed to develop and test the feasibility, acceptability, and initial efficacy of a Web-based mobile pain coping skills training (mPCST) protocol designed to address the needs of HCT patients. METHODS Participants had undergone HCT and reported pain following transplant (N=68). To guide intervention development, qualitative data were collected from focus group participants (n=25) and participants who completed user testing (n=7). After their input was integrated into the mPCST intervention, a pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT, n=36) was conducted to examine the feasibility, acceptability, and initial efficacy of the intervention. Measures of acceptability, pain severity, pain disability, pain self-efficacy, fatigue, and physical disability (self-report and 2-min walk test [2MWT]) were collected. RESULTS Participants in the focus groups and user testing provided qualitative data that were used to iteratively refine the mPCST protocol. Focus group qualitative data included participants' experiences with pain following transplant, perspectives on ways to cope with pain, and suggestions for pain management for other HCT patients. User testing participants provided feedback on the HCT protocol and information on the use of videoconferencing. The final version of the mPCST intervention was designed to bridge the intensive outpatient (1 in-person session) and home settings (5 videoconferencing sessions). A key component of the intervention was a website that provided personalized messages based on daily assessments of pain and activity. The website also provided intervention materials (ie, electronic handouts, short videos, and audio files). The intervention content included pain coping advice from other transplant patients and instructions on how to apply pain coping skills while engaging in meaningful and leisure activities. In the RCT phase of this research, HCT patients (n=36) were randomized to receive the mPCST intervention or to proceed with the treatment as usual. Results revealed that the mPCST participants completed an average of 5 out of 6 sessions. The participants reported that the intervention was highly acceptable (mean 3/4), and they found the sessions to be helpful (mean 8/10) and easy to understand (mean 7/7). The mPCST participants demonstrated significant improvements in pre- to post-treatment pain, self-efficacy (P=.03, d=0.61), and on the 2MWT (P=.03, d=0.66), whereas the patients in the treatment-as-usual group did not report any such improvements. Significant changes in pain disability and fatigue were found in both groups (multiple P<.02); the magnitudes of the effect sizes were larger for the mPCST group than for the control group (pain disability: d=0.79 vs 0.69; fatigue: d=0.94 vs 0.81). There were no significant changes in pain severity in either group. CONCLUSIONS Using focus groups and user testing, we developed an mPCST protocol that was feasible, acceptable, and beneficial for HCT patients with pain. Abstract
OBJECTIVES Guided imagery (GI) is a relaxation technique that is being increasingly explored in various patients' populations. We systematically reviewed evidence on the effects of GI on physiological and psychological outcomes of adult critically ill patients and extracted implications for future research. REVIEW METHOD USED Systematic literature review of published studies based on the Cochrane Guidelines. DATA SOURCES Studies were located through literature searches of CINAHL, PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews and Psych-Info. REVIEW METHODS We explored effects of GI in critically illness. The outcome measures included pain, anxiety, hemodynamic measurements, stress neuropeptides, length of stay, sleep quality, inflammatory markers, patient satisfaction and cost of care. The Cochrane Collaboration's tool for assessing risk of bias was employed. Extracted data included pathophysiological framework, sample, diagnoses of participants, specifics of intervention, design, experimental groups, analyses and main outcomes. RESULTS Based on the selection criteria, 10 studies were identified, involving N=1391 critically ill patients. The main limitations include incomplete outcome data and selective reporting, incomplete blinding and lack of experimental group allocation concealment. Due to heterogeneity and incomplete reporting, a meta-analysis was not feasible. Our findings included: (a) favourable effects of the intervention with regard to decrease of pain, anxiety and LOS; (b) many studies employing randomised controlled trial designs; (c) a predominant focus on patients with cardiac surgery; (d) large heterogeneity in measurement of outcomes. Moreover, the evidence suggests that improvements in sleep quality, patient satisfaction and cost of care merit further investigation. Methodological implications include the need to clarify the underlying physiological framework, the use of repeated measure designs and the adjustment for confounders. CONCLUSIONS On the basis of these results, and of the absence of reported side-effects, we conclude that GI is a promising patient-centered approach for the improvement of a number of patients' outcomes that merits further investigation in critical care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Positive effects of auditory stimulations are common in symptom management. However, the effect of self-affirmations on symptom management is not well known. OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of self-affirmations and nature sounds on chemotherapy-related symptoms. METHODS This randomized, controlled experimental study was conducted with 140 patients receiving chemotherapy. The first experimental group listened to affirmations, the second listened to nature sounds, and the third listened to both. FINDINGS In the affirmation group, pain, tiredness, drowsiness, lack of appetite, depression, anxiety, and lack of well-being scores were lower. In the affirmation and nature sounds group, drowsiness, depression, anxiety, and lack of well-being scores were reduced. In the nature sounds group, tiredness, drowsiness, and lack of well-being scores were reduced. In the control group, tiredness, drowsiness, nausea, and lack of well-being scores were higher.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Guided imagery (GI) has been recommended as a mind-body therapy for pain relief following orthopaedic surgery, but little is known about the acceptability of the intervention. PURPOSE Describe the perceptions of patients undergoing total knee replacement (TKR) surgery regarding the acceptability of a customized GI intervention to promote TKR outcomes. METHODS Narrative and survey data collected during a randomized controlled trial of the GI intervention were analyzed to assess the acceptability of the intervention. RESULTS Most participants were satisfied with and actively engaged in the intervention, and they perceived it to be helpful. For the smaller group of participants who did not find the intervention to be acceptable, reasons for dissatisfaction and barriers to engagement were identified. CONCLUSIONS Guided imagery is an acceptable intervention for many persons undergoing TKR surgery. The results of this study can provide information to further develop a targeted and customized GI intervention for this population.

Abstract
The purpose of this review was to investigate and review the concept of "peace" and the role it plays in the spiritual well-being and care of people with a chronic or terminal illness. Our objectives were, first, to examine the importance of peace in palliative care as a measure of acceptance and in chronic illness settings as a predictor of improved survival. Second, we explored the dimensions of peace and their relationships with spiritual well-being. We further examined how the constructs of peace are assessed both within valid spiritual well-being measures and as individual items related solely to peace. Finally, we examined therapies aimed at promoting peace and emotional well-being in palliative and chronic illness settings. Despite much being written about different constructs of peace and the positive effects of being at peace during times of illness, the effects of therapies on the feeling of peace are not well-studied.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To discuss the importance of cancer symptom clusters in clinical practice, review evidence for symptom cluster interventions, and make recommendations for symptom cluster identification, patient education, and management in clinical practice. DATA SOURCES Primary research and review articles identified through CINAHL, PubMed, and PsycINFO databases. CONCLUSION Several studies have investigated interventions for multi-symptom management or have evaluated the secondary effects of a single-symptom intervention on related symptoms. To date, only five studies have tested an intervention designed to manage a specific cancer symptom cluster. Those studies used nonpharmacologic approaches (psycho-education, cognitive-behavioral strategies, and acupressure) to address the pain, fatigue, and sleep disturbance symptom cluster, or the respiratory distress symptom cluster with some initial evidence of success. Further development and efficacy testing of symptom cluster interventions is needed. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE Clinical practice can be guided by knowledge of individual and multi-symptom management, and clinical judgment regarding possible etiologies of cancer symptom clusters. Clinicians should be aware of co-occurring symptoms in their patients, educate and involve patients in identifying symptom clusters and aggravating/alleviating factors, and coordinate treatment recommendations using strategies that are likely to be beneficial across symptoms.

Abstract
Aim Pain is a common and a complex experience among patients with cancer. The purpose of this review is to provide a rational for a psychologist’s role in cancer pain management and a guide for doing so based on an examination of the current cancer pain literature. Method A literature review was conducted using the search terms: “cancer pain” AND “nonpharmacological interventions”, “cancer pain”, and “pain management” AND “cancer pain”. Peer-reviewed articles (published between 2000-2015) in which the authors had access to the full-linked text, books, and websites were included. Results A total of 451 hits were returned of which 53 were relevant and considered for this review. These were then organized into the following topics: complex cancer pain syndromes, current cancer physiological therapies, the multifactorial model of cancer pain, psychosocial assessment and interventions, barriers to treatment, and clinical implications that impact the future of behavioural interventions as part of cancer treatment. Conclusion Each patient with cancer has a unique pain experience that is shaped by biopsychosocial factors. Because of this, using a multidimensional and multidisciplinary approach is needed to optimize treatment outcomes. To maximize their role, psychologists need to help facilitate this process and to address any attitude and/or knowledge shortcomings they may have.

Abstract
Within patient-centered care (PCC), the individual is viewed as an active member of the healthcare team. While there has been recent interest in conducting systematic reviews to examine the effectiveness of PCC interventions, various studies fall short in explaining the type of intervention most effective in producing significant changes to desired outcomes. The purpose of this systematic review was to determine the characteristics of PCC interventions that have demonstrated effectiveness in enhancing the quality of care and performance of self-care behaviours. A systematic review of 40 studies that addressed PCC interventions, included samples over the age of 18 years, and were published between 1995 and 2014 was performed. Descriptive statistics were used to delineate study, participant, and intervention characteristics. Results suggest PCC-based interventions are not effective when delivered to individuals living with chronic illnesses.

Abstract
Although sleep is vital to all human functioning and poor sleep is a known problem in cancer, it is unclear whether the overall prevalence of the various types of sleep disorders in cancer is known. The purpose of this systematic literature review was to evaluate if the prevalence of sleep disorders could be ascertained from the current body of literature regarding sleep in cancer. This was a critical and systematic review of peer-reviewed, English-language, original articles published from 1980 through 15 October 2013, identified using electronic search engines, a set of key words, and prespecified inclusion and exclusion criteria. Information from 254 full-text, English-language articles was abstracted onto a paper checklist by one reviewer, with a second reviewer randomly verifying 50% (k = 99%). All abstracted data were entered into an electronic database, verified for accuracy, and analyzed using descriptive statistics and frequencies in SPSS (v.20) (North Castle, NY). Studies of sleep and cancer focus on specific types of symptoms of poor sleep, and there are no published prevalence studies that focus on underlying sleep disorders. Challenging the current paradigm of the way sleep is studied in cancer could produce better clinical screening tools for use in oncology clinics leading to better triaging of patients with sleep complaints to sleep specialists, and overall improvement in sleep quality.

Abstract
OPINION STATEMENT Gynecologic cancer patients frequently desire alternative and/or complementary interventions or medicines to aid in relief of both cancer-related and treatment-related side effects. Furthermore, women also seek treatment to aid in superior outcomes and cure rates. Unfortunately, evidence suggests that the use of complementary and/or alternative medicine (CAM) is underreported or not discussed with physicians providing cancer care. In gynecologic cancer literature, there is a lack of scientific evidence either supporting or negating CAM. Because of the lack of information available, health care providers do not have good information regarding safety, efficacy, and dose of CAM. This leads to miscommunication or absence of communication between providers and patients. Because patients do use CAM to improve quality of life (QOL) during and after treatment, it would be educational for providers to know the specific QOL deficits among patients that require attention. Thus, with the ultimate goal of improving QOL for gynecologic cancer patients, providers should be pushed to investigate CAM and determine an honest support or rejection of these therapies.

Abstract
AIMS To assess and synthesize the evidence of the effects and safety of non-pharmacological interventions in treating pain in patients with advanced cancer. BACKGROUND Pain is a common symptom experienced by patients with advanced cancer; the treatment of such pain is often suboptimal. To manage it, non-pharmacological interventions are recommended after pharmacological treatments have been re-evaluated and modified. However, there remains a lack of knowledge about the effects and safety of such interventions. DESIGN A systematic review was conducted based on the procedure of the Centre of Reviews and Dissemination. DATA SOURCES Research papers published between 2000-2013 were identified from the following databases: CINAHL, MEDIC, MEDLINE (Ovid) and PsycINFO. The references in the selected studies were searched manually. REVIEW METHODS The studies selected were reviewed for quality, using Cochrane Effective Practice and Organisation of Care Review Group risk of bias assessment criteria. RESULTS There was limited evidence that some of the non-pharmacological interventions were promising with respect to reducing cancer pain. Relatively, few adverse events were reported as a result of using such interventions. CONCLUSION It was not possible to draw conclusions about the effects and safety of the non-pharmacological interventions in reducing cancer pain. Some interventions showed promising short-term effects, but there is a need for more rigorous trials. Qualitative studies are required to collect information about patients' perceptions. There are several research gaps: we found no studies about music, spiritual care, hypnosis, active coping training, cold or ultrasonic stimulation.

Abstract
CONTEXT Exploring the relationships between concurrent symptoms or "symptom clusters" (SCs) longitudinally may complement the knowledge gained from the traditional approach of examining individual symptoms or SCs crosssectionally. OBJECTIVES To identify consistent SCs over the course of one year and determine the possible associations between SCs and demographic and medical characteristics, and between SCs and emotional distress. METHODS This study was an exploratory longitudinal analysis of SCs in a large sample of newly diagnosed cancer patients. Patients provided symptom assessment data at baseline, three, six, and 12 months. A factor analysis was conducted (controlling for the patient over time) on pain, fatigue, anxiety, depression, sleep, weight change, and food intake items to identify clusters. A panel regression on each cluster explored associations with demographic and medical characteristics and distress. RESULTS In total, 877 patients provided baseline data, with 505 retained at 12 months. Three SCs explained 71% of the variance. The somatic cluster included pain, fatigue, and sleep; the psychological cluster included anxiety and depression; and the nutrition cluster consisted of weight and food intake. Low income and treatment with radiation or chemotherapy predicted higher somatic symptom burden. Younger age, being female, low income, and treatment with surgery predicted more psychological symptomatology. Older age and treatment with surgery predicted higher nutritional burden. Patients with higher somatic, psychological, and nutritional symptom burden reported higher distress. CONCLUSION The presence of SCs across the first year of diagnosis supports the need for routine and ongoing screening for the range of symptoms that may be experienced by patients. Further work is needed to develop interventions that better target individual symptoms that cluster, as well as the entire cluster itself.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Advanced cancer patients often develop severe physical and psychological symptom clusters (SCs), but limited data exist on their consistency or severity after an outpatient interdisciplinary team consultation led by palliative care specialists. The primary aim of the study was to determine the consistency and severity of SCs in advanced cancer patients in this setting. METHOD A total of 1373 patients with advanced cancer who were referred to The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center's Outpatient Supportive Care Center between January 2003 and October 2008 with a complete Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS; 0-10 scale) occurred at initial and first follow-up visit were reviewed (median 14 days, range 1-4 weeks). We used a Wilcoxon signed-rank test to determine whether symptoms changed over time, and a principal components factor analysis with varimax rotation to determine SCs at baseline and at first follow-up. The number of factors calculated was determined based upon the number of eigenvalues. RESULTS The patients' ratings of the following symptoms (mean, SD) at the initial and follow-up visits, respectively, were: fatigue 6.2 (2.3) and 5.7 (2.5, p < 0.0001), pain 5.4 (2.9) and 4.6 (3, p < 0.0001), nausea 2.2 (2.8) and 2.0 (2.6, p < 0.0001), depression 3.0 (2.9) and 2.5 (2.7, p < 0.0001), anxiety 3.4 (3.0) and 2.8 (2.8, p < 0.0001), drowsiness 4.8 (3.1) and 4.4 (3.1, p < 0.0001), dyspnea 3.0 (2.9) and 2.7 (2.8), p < 0.0001), loss of appetite 4.2 (2.7) and 3.9 (2.7, p < 0.0001), sleep disturbances 4.2 (2.6) and 3.8 (2.6, P < 0.0001), and well-being 4.3 (2.5) and 3.9 (2.3, p < 0.0001). Cluster composition differentiated into physical (fatigue, pain, nausea, drowsiness, dyspnea, and loss of appetite) and psychological (anxiety and depression) components at the initial visit, and these two SCs were consistent upon follow-up. SIGNIFICANCE OF RESULTS We conclude that SCs remain constant between baseline and near-term follow-up but that the severity of those symptoms lessened during that interval. This knowledge may allow palliative care teams to provide more targeted and higher-quality care, but further studies are needed.

Abstract
This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of guided imagery on stress and fatigue in patients undergoing radioactive iodine therapy after thyroidectomy in Korea. Participants were 84 individuals (44 for experimental group and 40 for control group) with thyroid cancer. The experimental group listened to a guided imagery CD once a day for 4 weeks. Global Assessment of Recent Stress and Revised Piper Fatigue Scale were self-administered, and heart rate variability was measured at three time points; prior to intervention (T1), just before intervention (T2) and 1 week later after intervention (T3). Heart rate variability was consisted of Standard Deviation of all NN interval (SDNN), Total Power (TP), Low Frequency (LF), and High Frequency (HF). There were significant decreases in stress (F = 28.45, P < 0.001) and fatigue (F = 26.17, P < 0.001) over time in the experimental group compared to the control group. Heart rate variability changed over time in the experimental group relative to the control group; SDNN (F = 6.68, P = 0.002), TP (F = 5.29, P = 0.006), LF (F = 4.58, P = 0.012), and HF (F = 3.71, P = 0.026). From the results of this study guided imagery can be recommended as an effective intervention to thyroid cancer patients with stress and fatigue.

Abstract
CONTEXT Exposure to a natural environment has been reported to be associated with positive effects on mental well-being. However, no report has examined the effects of a house designed with an open space connected to nature on recovery from fatigue. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of such an open space on recovery from mental fatigue. DESIGN Placebo-controlled, crossover design. SETTING Participants were randomized into open (connected to nature) and closed (not connected to nature) conditions. PARTICIPANTS Sixteen healthy female volunteers were enrolled. INTERVENTION After a 30-minute fatigue-inducing mental task, participants moved to an open or closed recovery room for 30 minutes. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES As fatigue-evaluating mental tasks, participants performed advanced trail making tests for 20 minutes. They were asked to rate their levels of fatigue, relaxation, comfort, and healing on a visual analogue scale from 0 (minimum) to 100 (maximum) to evaluate their subjective mental. They also underwent accelerated plethysmography. RESULTS After the recovery session, lower total error counts of a cognitive test, greater levels of subjective relaxation, comfort, and healing, and lower levels of waveform index-1 assessed via accelerated plethysmography were observed in participants exposed to the open condition compared with the closed condition. These results provide evidence that the use of a house designed with an open space connected to nature during the recovery session improved cognitive function and subjective mental states. Hence, open space was effective for helping recovery from mental fatigue.

Abstract
CONTEXT Pain, fatigue, and sleep disturbance commonly co-occur in patients receiving treatment for advanced cancer. OBJECTIVES A pilot randomized controlled trial was conducted to assess initial efficacy of a patient-controlled cognitive-behavioral (CB) intervention for the pain, fatigue, and sleep disturbance symptom cluster. METHODS Eighty-six patients with advanced lung, prostate, colorectal, or gynecologic cancers receiving treatment at a comprehensive cancer center were stratified by recruitment clinics (chemotherapy and radiation therapy) and randomized to intervention or control groups. Forty-three patients were assigned to receive training in and use of up to 12 relaxation, imagery, or distraction exercises delivered via an MP3 player for two weeks during cancer treatment. Forty-three patients were assigned to a waitlist control condition for the same two week period. Outcomes included symptom cluster severity and overall symptom interference with daily life measured at baseline (Time 1) and two weeks later (Time 2). RESULTS Eight participants dropped out; 78 completed the study and were analyzed (36 intervention and 42 control subjects). Participants used the CB strategies an average of 13.65 times (SD=6.98). Controlling for baseline symptom cluster severity and other relevant covariates, it was found that the symptom cluster severity at Time 2 was lower in the intervention group (M(Adj)=2.99, SE=0.29) than in the waitlist group (M(Adj)=3.87, SE=0.36), F(1, 65)=3.57, P=0.032. Symptom interference with daily life did not differ between groups. No significant adverse events were noted with the CB intervention. CONCLUSION Findings suggest that the CB intervention may be an efficacious approach to treating the pain, fatigue, and sleep disturbance symptom cluster. Future research is planned to confirm efficacy and test mediators and moderators of intervention effects.

Abstract
Pain is prevalent, burdensome, and undertreated in individuals with cancer across the disease trajectory. Providing patients and family caregivers with psychosocial support and education to manage cancer pain is a core component of quality care that can result in significant clinical benefit. In this review, we: (1) outline an approach for developing and assessing the effectiveness of education programs for adults with cancer pain; (2) discuss considerations for tailoring programs to the needs of diverse populations and those with limited health literacy skills; (3) describe the resource needs and costs of developing a program; (4) highlight innovative approaches to cancer pain education.
