Abstract
The field of radiation oncology is rapidly advancing through technological and biomedical innovation backed by robust research evidence. In addition, cancer professionals are notoriously time-poor, meaning there is a need for high quality, accessible and tailored oncological education programs. Digital learning (DL) is well-placed to cater to these needs, as it provides teaching options that can be delivered flexibly and on-demand from anywhere in the world. The evidence for usage of these techniques in medical education has expanded rapidly in recent years. However, there remains many reservations in the oncological community to adopting and developing DL, largely due to a poor familiarity with the pedagogical evidence base. This article will review the application of the screen-based DL tools that are at educators' disposal. It will summarize best-practice in developing tailored, made-for-screen videos, gamification, and infographics. It also reviews data behind the following practical tips of 1) strategically combining text with graphics to decrease cognitive load, 2) engaging users through use of interactive elements in digital content, and 3) maximizing impact through thoughtful organization of animations/images. Overall, the digital space evolving is well placed to cater to the evolving educational needs of oncology learners. This review and its practical tips aim to inspire further development in this arena, production of high-yield educational products, use of engaging delivery methods and programs that are tailored to individual learning needs.

Abstract
PURPOSE Low health literacy is a leading cause of treatment abandonment among patients receiving cancer care at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) in Malawi. METHODS We developed cancer educational videos featuring Malawian providers and played them in the KCH oncology clinic. The videos addressed cancer-related topics, including disease biology, common myths, diagnostic procedures, treatment, side effects, and survivorship. After 6 months of implementation, we compared results from 50 pre- and postintervention surveys to assess change in cancer knowledge and care experience. RESULTS Both pre- and postintervention cancer knowledge were good: a median of nine questions were answered correctly of 11 in both assessments. Despite the intervention, most continued to incorrectly identify cancer as an infection (pre: n = 26, 52%; post: n = 25, 50%; P = 1.0), although improvements were observed in patients' knowledge of correct actions for fever at home (pre: n = 38, 76%; post: n = 43, 86%; P = .31). Care experiences were overall good. Postintervention results indicate that more patients felt always listened to by their providers (pre: n = 18, 36%; post: n = 29, 58%; P < .01). However, we also noted a higher rate of patient dissatisfaction of care as more patients felt that they could not understand chemotherapy counseling (pre: n = 11, 22%; post: n = 22, 44%; P < .01). Assessments of video satisfaction indicate that patients found the videos very helpful in terms of understanding their disease (n = 47, 96%) and side effects (n = 48, 98%) and felt empowered to speak up with their providers (n = 46, 96%). CONCLUSION Standardized education materials for patients that can be feasibly implemented throughout sub-Saharan Africa are urgently needed. Cancer educational videos are a low-cost way to educate and empower patients with cancer in resource-constrained settings although in-person discussions remain a crucial part of care.

Abstract
Background Cancer is a taxing chronic disease that demands substantial care, most of which is shouldered by informal caregivers. As a result, cancer caregivers often have to manage considerable challenges that could result in severe physical and psychological health consequences. Technology-based interventions have the potential to address many, if not all, of the obstacles caregivers encounter while caring for patients with cancer. However, although the application of technology-based interventions is on the rise, the term is seldom defined in research or practice. Considering that the lack of conceptual clarity of the term could compromise the effectiveness of technology-based interventions for cancer caregivers, timely research is needed to bridge this gap. Objective This study aims to clarify the meaning of technology-based interventions in the context of cancer caregiving and provide a definition that can be used by cancer caregivers, patients, clinicians, and researchers to facilitate evidence-based research and practice. Methods The 8-step concept analysis method by Walker and Avant was used to analyze the concept of technology-based interventions in the context of cancer caregiving. PubMed, PsycINFO, CINAHL, and Scopus were searched for studies that examined technology-based interventions for cancer caregivers. Results The defining attributes of technology-based interventions were recognized as being accessible, affordable, convenient, and user-friendly. On the basis of insights gained on the defining attributes, antecedents to, and consequences of technology-based interventions through the concept analysis process, technology-based interventions were defined as the use of technology to design, develop, and deliver health promotion contents and strategies aimed at inducing or improving positive physical or psychological health outcomes in cancer caregivers. Conclusions This study clarified the meaning of technology-based interventions in the context of cancer caregiving and provided a clear definition that can be used by caregivers, patients, clinicians, and researchers to facilitate evidence-based oncology practice. A clear conceptualization of technology-based interventions lays foundations for better intervention design and research outcomes, which in turn have the potential to help health care professionals address the needs and preferences of cancer caregivers more cost-effectively.

Multimedia in preoperative patient education for adults undergoing cancer surgery: A systematic review. Eur J Oncol Nurs 2021; 52:101981. Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this systematic review was to determine whether adequate research evidence exists to support utilizing multimedia technology in the preoperative education of adult cancer patients. METHODS A systematic search of Medline, CINAHL, Web of Science, and PsycINFO databases from 2010 through September 24, 2020, was performed. The review included quantitative studies that examined whether education delivered by multimedia impacted levels of anxiety, knowledge acquisition, satisfaction, and compliance. The research quality was evaluated using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Tool specific to the study design. RESULTS The database search identified 529 scientific articles, of these nine studies met the eligibility criteria (n = 5 randomized controlled trials; n = 4 quasi-experimental studies). The education interventions included a variety of researcher-developed, multimedia modalities, consisting of video (n = 7), a computer program (n = 1), and a tablet application (n = 1). The methodological rigor varied among these studies. Multimedia patient education resulted in decreased anxiety and improved knowledge acquisition within groups; however, there was no significant difference when compared to traditional methods. Patients were also similarly satisfied and compliant with both education methods. CONCLUSIONS In all studies, the healthcare provider played a prominent role in both multimedia and traditional interventions, revealing the strong influence of the interpersonal connection in the delivery of preoperative education. Future research is needed to investigate whether more interactive technology could improve patient outcomes.

Abstract
Background Thousands of web searches are performed related to transarterial chemoembolization (TACE), given its palliative role in the treatment of liver cancer. Objective This study aims to assess the reliability, quality, completeness, readability, understandability, and actionability of websites that provide information on TACE for patients. Methods The five most popular keywords pertaining to TACE were searched on Google, Yahoo, and Bing. General website characteristics and the presence of Health On the Net Foundation code certification were documented. Website assessment was performed using the following scores: DISCERN, Journal of the American Medical Association, Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level, Flesch Reading Ease Score, and the Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool. A novel TACE content score was generated to evaluate website completeness. Results The search yielded 3750 websites. In total, 81 website entities belonging to 78 website domains met the inclusion criteria. A medical disclaimer was not provided on 28% (22/78) of website domains. Health On the Net code certification was present on 12% (9/78) of website domains. Authorship was absent on 88% (71/81) of websites, and sources were absent on 83% (67/81) of websites. The date of publication or of the last update was not listed on 58% (47/81) of websites. The median DISCERN score was 47.0 (IQR 40.5-54.0). The median TACE content score was 35 (IQR 27-43). The median readability grade level was in the 11th grade. Overall, 61% (49/81) and 16% (13/81) of websites were deemed understandable and actionable, respectively. Not-for-profit websites fared significantly better on the Journal of the American Medical Association, DISCERN, and TACE content scores. Conclusions The content referring to TACE that is currently available on the web is unreliable, incomplete, difficult to read, understandable but not actionable, and characterized by low overall quality. Websites need to revise their content to optimally educate consumers and support shared decision-making. Abstract
BACKGROUND The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic influenced family-centred care dramatically due to restricting visiting policies. In this new situation, nurses were challenged to develop new approaches to involve family members in patient care. A better understanding of these changes and the experiences of nurses is essential to make an adaptation of procedures, and to secure a family-centred approach in care as much as possible. OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to investigate how family involvement had taken place, and to explore the experiences of nurses with family involvement during the COVID-19 outbreak. In addition, we aimed to formulate recommendations for the involvement of family. METHODS We conducted a qualitative study using patient record review and focus-group interviews between April and July 2020. We reviewed records of patients with confirmed COVID-19, who were admitted to the COVID-19 wards at two affiliated university hospitals in the Netherlands. All records were searched for notations referring to family involvement. In two focus-groups, nurses who worked at the COVID-19 wards were invited to share their experiences. The Rigorous and Accelerated Data Reduction (RADaR) method was used to collect, reduce and analyse the data. RESULTS In total, 189 patient records were reviewed and nine nurses participated in the focus-group meetings. Patient records revealed infrequent and often unstructured communication with focus on physical condition. Nurses confirmed that communication with family was far less than before and that the physical condition of the patient was predominant. The involvement of family in care was limited to practicalities, although more involvement was described in end-of-life situations. Nurses experienced moral distress due to the visiting restrictions, though some acknowledged that they had experienced the direct patient care so intense and burdensome, that family contact simply felt too much. CONCLUSION The communication with and involvement of family in hospital care changed enormously during the COVID-19 outbreak. Based on the identified themes, we formulated recommendations that may be helpful for family-centered care in hospitals during periods of restricted visiting policy.

Abstract
Patient, caregiver, and family education and support was 1 of 6 key areas of interest identified by the National Marrow Donor Program/Be The Match 2-year project to prioritize patient-centered outcomes research (PCOR) goals for the blood and marrow transplantation (BMT) community. PCOR focuses on research to help patients and their caregivers make informed decisions about health care. Therefore, each area of interest was assigned to a working group with broad representation, including patients, caregivers, and clinicians. Each working group was charged with identifying gaps in knowledge and making priority recommendations for critical research to fill those gaps. The report from this working group presents a conceptual framework to address gaps in knowledge regarding patient and caregiver education in BMT and recommendations for priority research questions on this topic.

Abstract
Improving the efficiency of patient education can help improve patient's satisfaction and alleviate the pressure of nurse shortage. This study aimed to develop and pilot an educational audio to improve the effectiveness of inpatient education. A primary literature review was conducted and educational materials were written and recorded by MP3. A pilot study was conducted in 713 adult patients in the department of respiratory medicine at a large urban Shanghai teaching hospital. Patients in the experimental group showed greater satisfaction with their health education. For the education to be effective during the admission, the asthma patients in the experimental group spent less time in face-to-face communication. The feedback rate for disease education among asthma patients in the experimental group was significantly higher. Wider applications of audio in patient education may be valuable to better adjust to nurse reduction and to improve nursing service quality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Informing and educating melanoma patients is important for early detection of a recurrence or second primary. This study aimed to investigate Dutch melanoma patients' disease-specific knowledge, and their opinions on information provision and the value of e-Health videos. METHODS All AJCC stage I-II melanoma patients in follow-up between March 2015 and March 2016 at a single melanoma center were invited to complete 19 online questions, addressing respondents' characteristics, knowledge on melanoma, and opinions on melanoma-specific information received and the educational YouTube videos. RESULTS In total, 100 patients completed the survey (response = 52%); median age was 60 years and 51% were female. Breslow tumor thickness was unknown by 34% and incorrectly indicated by 19%, for presence of ulceration this was 33% and 11%, for mitosis 65% and 14%, and for AJCC stage 52% and 23%, respectively. Only 5% correctly reproduced all four tumor characteristics. Orally delivered information regarding warning signs, severity, treatment possibilities, and importance of self-inspection was clearest for patients, compared to information in the melanoma brochure. According to 77% of patients, YouTube videos regarding self-inspection of the skin and regional lymph nodes had additional value. Altogether, 63% preferred receiving information in multiple ways; 92% orally by their physician, 62% through videos, and 43% through brochures. CONCLUSIONS Patients' melanoma-specific knowledge appears to be limited. There is an urgent need for further improvement of providing information and patient education. In addition to oral and written information, e-Health videos seem to be a convenient supplemental and easy accessible method for patient education.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of this investigation was to describe cancer survivorship based on the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) cancer survivorship modules in Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi, conducted in 2012 and 2014, and to investigate disparities across the US Deep South region. METHODS The optional BRFSS cancer survivorship module was introduced in 2009. Data from Alabama (2012), Georgia (2012), and Mississippi (2014) were assessed. Demographic factors were analyzed through weighted regression for risk of receiving cancer treatment summary information and follow-up care. RESULTS Excluding nonmelanoma skin cancer cases, a total of 1105 adults in the Alabama 2012 survey, 571 adults in the Georgia 2012 survey, and 442 adults in the 2014 Mississippi survey reported ever having cancer and were available for analysis. Among Alabamians, those with a higher level of education (odds ratio [OR] 1.4, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.1-1.7) and higher income (OR 1.3, 95% CI 1.1-1.6) were more likely to receive a written summary of their cancer treatments. Adults older than age 65 were only half as likely to receive a written summary of cancer treatments compared with adults 65 years or younger (OR 0.5, 95% CI 0.3-0.8). We found no significant differences in receipt of treatment summary by race or sex. Among those who reported receiving instructions from a doctor for follow-up care, these survivors tended to have a higher level of education, higher income, and were younger (younger than 65 years). Receipt of written or printed follow-up care was positively associated with higher income (OR 1.4, 95% CI 1.1-1.8) and inversely associated with age older than 65 years (OR 0.9, 95% CI 0.1-0.6) in Georgia. CONCLUSIONS Addressing the gap identified between survivorship care plan development by the health team and the delivery of it to survivors is important given the evidence of disparities in the receipt of survivorship care plans across survivor age and socioeconomic status in the Deep South.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The long-term follow-up (LTFU) team at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance uses telemedicine to diagnose and treat post-transplantation complications in hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) survivors. Photos are often requested via the telemedicine service to aid in diagnosis, but they are typically of poor quality, making them unusable. OBJECTIVES This project offered bachelor of science in nursing students, partnered with a comprehensive cancer center, the opportunity to participate in an evidence-based practice project to improve detection and management of chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD) in patients after HCT. METHODS Students partnered with RNs to develop instructional tools using multiple evidence sources. A brochure and video were developed. FINDINGS Providing these instructional tools to those in the LTFU program improved patient outcomes for managing cGVHD through telemedicine. This partnership provided an opportunity for mutual learning and improved clinical practice.
