Abstract
PURPOSE Family members of cancer patients experience a range of challenges and are impacted in various ways by cancer. To our knowledge, the impact of cancer on adult siblings has yet to be explored. Sibling relationships are one of the longest relationships individuals have across the lifespan. Thus, the current study sought to investigate the perspectives of siblings of those who previously had cancer. METHODS Ten participants were recruited using purposive sampling. A qualitative, cross-sectional design was implemented with both virtual and in-person semi-structured interviews. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed and analysed using thematic analysis. RESULTS The researchers identified five themes relating to both the impact of cancer on siblings and the supports they received: changes in family relationships, sibling's grief is forgotten, benefits of social support networks, supporting their sibling and caregiving and self-support. CONCLUSIONS Cancer organizations and support services should focus on signposting services for siblings in order to ensure they can access support. Further research is needed with siblings to gain greater insight into what supports siblings feel are available for them to access, whether there are any for them to access or how supports can be improved. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS The provision of appropriate psychological support for siblings of cancer patients will ensure they can provide optimal support and care to their siblings. This will in turn benefit cancer patients along their cancer trajectory as adequate support from their caregivers will enhance their quality of life.

Abstract
El hermano sano en situaciones de cáncer infantil es con frecuencia un sujeto invisible para su familia, los profesionales de la salud y las instituciones. El objetivo de este trabajo fue mapear e integrar la literatura científica acerca de la experiencia del hermano del niño diagnosticado con cáncer. Se desarrolló una Scoping Review de 28 artículos publicados entre 2016 y 2020, en los idiomas español, inglés y portugués. Se incluyeron 12 estudios cualitativos, 15 cuantitativos y un estudio mixto. Frente a los hallazgos, se identificó que hay cambios en las relaciones entre hermanos, parentales y sociales, además de cambios personales y una oferta limitada de apoyo a los hermanos del niño con cáncer. Se concluye que el cáncer infantil afecta directamente a los miembros de la familia, incluido al hermano sano, quien enfrenta cambios drásticos en su vida que implican nuevas necesidades, sentimientos y conductas de riesgo. Se requiere una mayor investigación y abordaje acerca del impacto del cáncer infantil en hermanos sanos, así como el diseño de intervenciones que pongan de manifiesto la necesidad de hacer visible a este sujeto que sufre el daño colateral del cáncer infantil y que ha sido descuidado por su familia y por los profesionales en salud.

Abstract
La littérature montre que de nombreux enfants et adolescents confrontés au cancer d’un proche apportent une aide significative et régulière. Ces jeunes sont nommés jeunes aidants (JA). Cette situation a des conséquences importantes sur le bien-être et la qualité de vie de ces jeunes. Pourtant, les JA sont aujourd’hui peu identifiés et reconnus en France, et il existe peu de dispositifs pour les soutenir. Cet article se propose d’exposer la place des JA dans le cancer dans notre société, leurs besoins et les dispositifs d’accompagnement pouvant y répondre.

Abstract
Background: Siblings of children with cancer often experience anxiety and posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), which negatively impact their self-esteem due to emotionally upsetting circumstances. The purpose of this longitudinal quantitative study was to investigate changes in anxiety, PTSS, and self-esteem of youth who participated in a peer support camp for siblings of children with cancer. Methods: A longitudinal study examined changes over time. Data were collected from 32 sibling surveys pre-, post-, and three months after camp. Siblings completed assessments to measure anxiety, PTSS, and self-esteem. A repeated measures ANOVA or Friedman Test was conducted to identify changes across the three data points for each outcome measured. Post hoc comparisons using paired sample t-tests or Wilcoxon Signed-Rank tests were conducted. Results: Significant improvements in anxiety; T1 and T2 (p < .000); T1 and T3 (p < .000). Significant decrease in PTSS; T1 and T2 (p = .001); T1 and T3 (p = .011). Significant improvement in self-esteem scores for older participants (ages 10-16); T1 and T2 (p < .000). Significant improvement in self-esteem for younger participants (ages 7-9); T1 and T3 (p = .005). Discussion: The data generated in this study expand knowledge about the influence of peer support camps on reducing the emotional distress of siblings of children with cancer. The findings warrant further research on the long-term impact of such camps, the value of repeated participation, differences between bereaved and nonbereaved siblings, the phase of the cancer experience, and elements of the camp that have the most impact.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES This study aimed to comprehensively describe the psychosocial and behavioural consequences experienced by siblings of hospitalised children from the caregivers' perspective. BACKGROUND After children are diagnosed with a major illness, their siblings may begin to exhibit psychological and behavioural problems, coupled with decreased quality of life. DESIGN This study employed qualitative content analysis to describe the perspectives of 147 caregivers of siblings of hospitalised children, following the COREQ guidelines. METHODS From January to March 2015, data were collected from 33 medical institutions in Japan using a survey that utilised an open-ended question. RESULTS Four themes comprising 13 comprehensive categories were extracted: (1) maintaining their usual self, (2) internalising difficulties, (3) externalising difficulties, and (4) personal growth. During data analysis, value judgments were avoided, with the focus instead placed on dividing the perspectives into positive and negative categories. CONCLUSIONS The neutral data analysis enabled us to describe the psychosocial and behavioural adjustments that siblings make to 'maintain their usual self'. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE This study's results can be used to educate healthcare providers, teachers and families about the psychosocial and behavioural effects of hospitalisation on siblings of hospitalised children to ensure that siblings struggling with psychosocial conflicts receive the necessary support.

Abstract
BACKGROUND When a child is given a diagnosis of cancer, the impact reverberates through the family unit. Siblings, in particular, experience an accumulation of distress. Siblings of children with cancer can experience both short- and long-term difficulties in psychosocial and physical functioning, and professional bodies have called for interventions targeted at their needs. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to describe outcomes, core components, and general characteristics of effective interventions intended to support sibling well-being and psychosocial health in pediatric oncology. METHODS MEDLINE (Ovid), EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Cochrane CENTRAL databases were searched in September 2019 and July 2020. Studies were included if they focused on interventions for siblings or family in pediatric cancer, had quantitative data to describe the effect or impact of the intervention, and were published in English. Included studies underwent quality appraisal, data extraction, and data synthesis. RESULTS Twenty articles fit inclusion criteria. Most interventions focused on 6- to 18-year-old siblings within a group setting. Most were theory based. Group format with multiple sessions was the most common approach. The most frequently assessed outcomes were depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress symptoms, and health-related quality of life. CONCLUSIONS Understanding outcomes, core components, and characteristics of effective interventions is important to translate sibling-support interventions into standard practice. Such considerations are important in delivering equitable family-centered care to siblings of children with cancer. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE As institutions create mechanisms to support siblings, it may be important to target high-risk siblings initially, partner with community resources, attend to underrecognized populations of siblings, and more fully incorporate family into sibling support.

Abstract
Objective This systematic review aims to investigate the support children provide in the case of a relative's cancer. Methods Searches were performed on four electronic databases (Embase, PsycINFO, PubMed and ScienceDirect) to identify studies that report on the support provided by children to a relative diagnosed with cancer. Two researchers independently evaluated the eligibility of the studies and cross‐checked them for accuracy. The Crowe Critical Appraisal Tool (CCAT) was used to assess the quality of the studies included. Results Out of the 10948 articles screened, 30 were included in this review. Results highlighted that cancer provokes changes in families, such as shifts in roles and increased responsibilities for the youth. Children often provided significant support to their sick relative and family members, including practical, emotional, and medical support such as household duties, medical assistance, companionship, and distraction. However, they were designated as young carers in only one study. The support provided was associated with negative effects such as stress and fatigue, and with positive effects such as increased empathy and independence. Children wished to support their family but also named several needs, such as time for themselves and the opportunity to enjoy their childhood. Conclusion The results of this systematic review highlight the importance of taking into account the support provided by young people facing the cancer of a relative and designating them as young carers. Much remains to be accomplished to officially recognize their role and to support them properly.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This review systematically (1) describes the characteristics of psychosocial interventions for siblings of children with cancer (SCC); (2) assesses the effect of the psychosocial interventions on SCCs' outcomes, and (3) describes SCCs' experiences and perceptions of these interventions. METHODS Seven databases were systematically searched for relevant literature. We included both quantitative and qualitative studies of psychological interventions designed to improve the adjustment of SCCs. RESULTS Our database searches yielded 19 publications. We found a range of psychosocial interventions being used among SCCs, with group interventions being the most common. The primary outcomes focused on the SCCs' depression, anxiety, and quality of life. Quantitative studies provided insufficient evidence to draw definitive conclusions about the interventions' effects, whereas the qualitative studies indicated that SCCs can derive benefits from these interventions, including an enhanced sense of belonging and bonding, improved family relationships, increased self-awareness and confidence, increased cancer knowledge, and decreased somatic symptoms. CONCLUSIONS Although a growing number of psychosocial interventions have been developed to improve the adjustment of SCCs, research evidence of the effects of these interventions on SCCs' adjustment remains limited. Future research needs to rigorously evaluate the effects of these interventions.

Abstract
PURPOSE To explore the experiences of adolescents with a sibling suffering from cancer from a salutogenic health promotion perspective. METHODS Seven female siblings aged 13-17 years were interviewed. The interviews were transcribed and subjected to qualitative content analysis. RESULTS The analysis findings adhered largely to one main theme: new challenges and needs in everyday life, consisting of the two domains cancer into life and helpful resources to cope. Categories related to the cancer into life domain were new routines and concerns, fear, loneliness, and growing up. Helpful resources to cope were categorized as support from others, understanding, faith and hope, and normal activities. CONCLUSION Prominent in the siblings' descriptions were the challenging changes in everyday life including difficult feelings such as loneliness, and a need for understanding. Social support appeared as a crucial salutogenic coping resource to achieve understanding, faith and hope, and identity-crucial spheres to achieve meaning in life. This study has demonstrated the significance of salutogenesis in a new setting, and the findings could be of relevance to teachers and health professionals consulting with the siblings of children with cancer. Further research should be conducted to pinpoint concrete health-promoting measures that might benefit this group.

Abstract
Evaluation of a Manualized Group Program for Siblings of Children with Diseases or Disabilities This study evaluates a manualized group program for siblings of children with life-threatening/life-limiting diseases or disabilities. The program aims to activate resources and to reduce emotional and behavioral problems, using cognitive-behavioral methods and experience-based interventions. In this multi-center study, 13 GeschwisterTREFFs were conducted by 11 study sites in Germany. Prior to and after the intervention 97 siblings aged 7 to 14 years and their parents were examined with standardized questionnaires. At baseline, the siblings of children with diseases or disabilities showed significant more emotional and behavioral problems compared to the respective norm samples. After the intervention, the siblings reported declined problem behavior scores that were mostly in the range of the particular norm values. Furthermore, the children indicated a significant improvement of self-esteem, self-efficacy, school competences and relations to their siblings. However, parents reported more problem behavior and less health-related quality of life of their children at both assessments. The present multi-center study showed the interventions' feasibility in different settings and confirmed expected improvements of target variables during the intervention period. Randomized-controlled trails are warranted to verify our results.

Abstract
Objective The objective of this study was to (1) assess the effects of a group intervention called Siblings Coping Together on siblings' psychosocial adjustment compared with controls; (2) explore the potential moderating effect of siblings' gender; and (3) investigate whether the intervention was more effective for siblings with more depressive symptoms at baseline. Methods This was a repeated measure, parallel randomized controlled trial (RCT) with two groups. Seventy-five healthy siblings (7-16 years old, 41 males) participated. Both groups had 8 weekly 2-hr sessions. Intervention sessions had psychoeducational, social, and therapeutic problem-solving goals taught through games and crafts (n = 41); controls (n = 34) had games and crafts only. Self-reported symptoms of depression (Children's Depression Inventory, CDI) and self- and proxy-reported quality of life (QOL) (Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory, PedsQL) were obtained at baseline, postintervention, and 3 months later. Multivariable analyses with a mixed effects model were performed. Results No significant main group effect or group × time interactions were found for any of the scales assessed. Significant improvement over time was found for total CDI (p < .01) and proxy-reported PedsQL total (p < .001) in both groups, which may have been attributable to the passage of time. Conclusions No sufficient evidence was obtained for the efficacy of the intervention in the current study. Future research may examine conducting a larger RCT comparing sibling support group to no treatment control group.

Abstract
TOPIC Siblings of children with cancer experience extraordinary responses and changes to their lives over the course of their family's cancer journey. PURPOSE The purpose of this paper is to conduct an integrative literature review to synthesize and analyze relevant findings related to the siblings' experiences of childhood cancer. SOURCES USED CINAHL, PubMed, Embase, MEDLINE, and PsycINFO were searched using the key terms: "sibling*" AND "pediatric*" AND "cancer" AND "experienc*" OR "experience*." Inclusion criteria for this review were research studies focused on sibling responses to having a brother or sister with cancer, published in English between January 1, 2012 and December 31, 2017. CONCLUSIONS Siblings of children with cancer experience many changes to their emotions, relationships, family and home life, school life, and extracurricular activities. They have specific needs and desires including the need for information. Whereas they undergo many changes during the cancer journey, siblings often demonstrate resilience and personal growth and find ways to problem-solve and cope.

Abstract
The psychological well-being of the siblings of hospitalized children is at risk.
This study examined the variables related to siblings’ internalizing problems
and personal growth during hospitalization from the perspectives of mothers and
other main caregivers who temporarily assumed the main caregiver role to the
siblings of hospitalized children in place of mothers in the period of
children’s hospitalization. A cross-sectional, exploratory survey conducted in
Japan examined 113 mothers’ and 90 other main caregivers’ perspectives regarding
the psychological state of 2- to 18-year-old siblings of hospitalized children.
Mothers and/or other main caregivers of siblings during their brothers’ or
sisters’ hospitalization completed the Child Behavior Checklist and the
Siblings’ Personal Growth Scale. Multiple linear regression analysis was
performed with Child Behavior Checklist internalizing problems and total
Siblings’ Personal Growth Scale scores as dependent variables for mothers’ and
caregivers’ perspectives. From mothers’ perspectives, environmental factors that
change with hospitalization affected siblings. From the perspectives of the
other main caregivers, children’s and families’ demographic factors affected
siblings’ psychological state. Frequency of e-mail contact between mothers and
siblings, explanation of the hospitalized child’s condition, and hospital
visitation rules (F = 5.88, P = .001)
explained 12.3% of variance in mothers’ Siblings’ Personal Growth Scale scores.
Among other main caregivers, 11.6% of variance in the Child Behavior Checklist
scores was explained by hospitalized children’s birth order and main caregiver’s
prehospitalization residence (F = 5.51, P =
.006). Results suggest that the perceived variables related to siblings’
psychological changes differ between mothers and other main caregivers.
