Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Patient navigation promotes access to timely treatment of chronic diseases by eliminating barriers to care. Patient navigation programs have been well-established in improving screening rates and diagnostic resolution. This systematic review aimed to characterize the multifaceted role of patient navigators within the realm of cancer treatment. RECENT FINDINGS A comprehensive electronic literature review of PubMed and Embase databases was conducted to identify relevant studies investigating the role of patient navigators in cancer treatment from August 1, 2009 to March 27, 2023. Fifty-nine articles were included in this review. Amongst studies focused on cancer treatment initiation, 70% found a significant improvement in treatment initiation amongst patients who were enrolled in patient navigation programs, 71% of studies focused on treatment adherence demonstrated significant improvements in treatment adherence, 87% of studies investigating patient satisfaction showed significant benefits, and 81% of studies reported a positive impact of patient navigators on quality care indicators. Three palliative care studies found beneficial effects of patient navigation. Thirty-seven studies investigated disadvantaged populations, with 76% of them concluded that patient navigators made a positive impact during treatment. This systematic review provides compelling evidence supporting the value of patient navigation programs in cancer treatment. The findings suggest that patient navigation plays a crucial role in improving access to care and optimizing treatment outcomes, especially for disadvantaged cancer patients. Incorporating patient navigation into standard oncology practice can reduce disparities and improve the overall quality of cancer care.

Abstract
Introduction Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a rare neuromuscular disease requiring various clinical specialists and therapists to provide care. Due to the disease's dynamic nature and the long distances between specialized centers and local providers, integrating care between disciplines can be challenging. Care that is inadequately integrated can compromise the quality of care and become a burden for patients and families. This trial aimed to improve the care of patients through a case management (CM) intervention. Methods We conducted an exploratory, controlled, two-arm trial with pre-, post-, and follow-up measures (process and outcome evaluation). Proof of efficacy based on statistical significance was not our primary study objective since we were investigating a rare disease. Primary outcomes were caregivers' HRQoL and caregiver-rated quality of care integration. Our secondary outcome was the children's HRQoL. Results Questionnaires and semi-structured interviews yielded heterogeneous results depending on caregivers' level of experience and desire (or possibility) to delegate care tasks. Discussion Despite differing perceptions, all participants supported the establishment of a care coordination model. We recommend CM immediately after diagnosis to provide the greatest benefit to families. We hope that our trial will support the further development of CM interventions that can be customized for specific diseases.

Abstract
Nursing-sensitive outcomes are those outcomes attributable to nursing care. To date three main reviews have summarized the evidence available regarding the nursing outcomes in onco-haematological care. Updating the existing reviews was the main intent of this study; specifically, the aim was to map the state of the art of the science in the field of oncology nursing-sensitive outcomes and to summarise outcomes and metrics documented as being influenced by nursing care. A scoping review was conducted in 2021. The MEDLINE, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health, Web of Science, and Scopus databases were examined. Qualitative and quantitative primary and secondary studies concerning patients with solid/haematological malignancies, cared for in any setting, published in English, and from any time were all included. Both inductive and deductive approaches were used to analyse the data extracted from the studies. Sixty studies have been included, mostly primary (n = 57, 95.0%) with a quasi- or experimental approach (n = 26, 55.3%), conducted among Europe (n = 27, 45.0%), in hospitals and clinical wards (n = 29, 48.3%), and including from 8 to 4615 patients. In the inductive analysis, there emerged 151 outcomes grouped into 38 categories, with the top category being 'Satisfaction and perception of nursing care received' (n = 32, 21.2%). Outcome measurement systems included mainly self-report questionnaires (n = 89, 66.9%). In the deductive analysis, according to the Oncology Nursing Society 2004 classification, the 'Symptom control and management' domain was the most investigated (n = 44, 29.1%); however, the majority (n = 50, 33.1%) of nursing-sensitive outcomes that emerged were not includible in the available framework. Continuing to map nursing outcomes may be useful for clinicians, managers, educators, and researchers in establishing the endpoints of their practice. The ample number of instruments and metrics that emerged suggests the need for more development of homogeneous assessment systems allowing comparison across health issues, settings, and countries.

Abstract
PURPOSE Cancer disparities are well documented among Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, yet little is known about the characteristics of programs that serve these populations. Integrating specialized cancer care services within community settings is important for addressing the needs of historically marginalized populations. Our National Cancer Institute-Designated Cancer Center initiated a clinical outreach program incorporating cancer diagnostic services and patient navigation within a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) to expedite evaluation and resolution of potential cancer diagnoses with the goal of collaboration between oncology specialists and primary care providers in a historically marginalized community in Boston, MA. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sociodemographic and clinical characteristics were analyzed from patients who were referred to the program for cancer-related care between January 2012 and July 2018. RESULTS The majority of patients self-identified as Black (non-Hispanic) followed by Hispanic (Black and White). Twenty-two percent of patients had a cancer diagnosis. Treatment and surveillance plans were established for those with and without cancer at a median time to diagnostic resolution of 12 and 28 days, respectively. The majority of patients presented with comorbid health conditions. There was a high prevalence of self-reported financial distress among patients seeking care through this program. CONCLUSION These findings highlight the wide spectrum of cancer care concerns in historically marginalized communities. This review of the program suggests that integrating cancer evaluation services within community-based primary health care settings offers promise for enhancing the coordination and delivery of cancer diagnostic services among historically marginalized populations and could be a method to address clinical access disparities.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES In Canada, two out of five people will be diagnosed with cancer which will affect their lives on a physical, psychological, and social levels. To help people affected by cancer (PAC) cope with the disease, support is provided by oncology nurses (ONs), including oncology pivot nurses (OPNs), as well as by accompanying patients (APs), i.e. people who have already had to deal with a cancer problem. APs are still a recent addition to the services offered in oncology, and as of yet no study has explored how the support provided by APs is being integrated into usual care, especially ONs care. This study explores the perceptions of APs and ONs on APs' integration into clinical teams. METHOD An exploratory qualitative study was carried out with six ONs and six APs through semi-structured interviews conducted from 2020 to 2021. Data were analyzed using a qualitative content analysis. RESULTS Participants perceived the AP's integration into the teams and during care as variable and in flux. They also identified factors that influence APs' integration into clinical teams (e.g.:the clinical teams' dynamics, the understanding of the AP's role, APs and patients' characteristics). Lastly, participants made recommendations to improve APs integration into clinical teams. CONCLUSION This study highlights how integrating APs into clinical teams has not yet become part of ONs' routines. ONs can play a key role in their integration through their collaborative and teamwork skills. Furthermore, there is a recognition that these two approaches can play complementary roles in supporting PACs.

Abstract
This article is from the 'To The Point' series from the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics Undergraduate Medical Education Committee. The purpose of this review is to provide an understanding of the differing yet complementary nature of interprofessional collaboration and interprofessional education as well as their importance to the specialty of Obstetrics and Gynecology. We provide a historical perspective of how interprofessional collaboration and interprofessional education have become key aspects of clinical and educational programs, enhancing both patient care and learner development. Opportunities to incorporate interprofessional education within women's health educational programs across organizations are suggested. This is a resource for medical educators, learners, and practicing clinicians from any field of medicine or any health-care profession.

Abstract
Background Older adults experience a high risk of adverse events during hospital-to-home transitions. Implementation barriers have prevented widespread clinical uptake of the various digital health technologies that aim to support hospital-to-home transitions. Objective To guide the development of a digital health intervention to support transitions from hospital to home (the Digital Bridge intervention), the specific objectives of this review were to describe the various roles and functions of health care providers supporting hospital-to-home transitions for older adults, allowing future technologies to be more targeted to support their work; describe the types of digital health interventions used to facilitate the transition from hospital to home for older adults and elucidate how these interventions support the roles and functions of providers; describe the lessons learned from the design and implementation of these interventions; and identify opportunities to improve the fit between technology and provider functions within the Digital Bridge intervention and other transition-focused digital health interventions. Methods This 2-phase rapid review involved a selective review of providers’ roles and their functions during hospital-to-home transitions (phase 1) and a structured literature review on digital health interventions used to support older adults’ hospital-to-home transitions (phase 2). During the analysis, the technology functions identified in phase 2 were linked to the provider roles and functions identified in phase 1. Results In phase 1, various provider roles were identified that facilitated hospital-to-home transitions, including navigation-specific roles and the roles of nurses and physicians. The key transition functions performed by providers were related to the 3 categories of continuity of care (ie, informational, management, and relational continuity). Phase 2, included articles (n=142) that reported digital health interventions targeting various medical conditions or groups. Most digital health interventions supported management continuity (eg, follow-up, assessment, and monitoring of patients’ status after hospital discharge), whereas informational and relational continuity were the least supported. The lessons learned from the interventions were categorized into technology- and research-related challenges and opportunities and informed several recommendations to guide the design of transition-focused digital health interventions. Conclusions This review highlights the need for Digital Bridge and other digital health interventions to align the design and delivery of digital health interventions with provider functions, design and test interventions with older adults, and examine multilevel outcomes. Abstract
PURPOSE Implementation of nurse navigators during cancer screening to the first treatment visit may facilitate early diagnosis and treatment. This study aims to demonstrate the evidence of the effects of nurse navigators during cancer screening in the first treatment phase. METHODS Eleven electronic databases were searched, including PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), EMBASE, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, PsycINFO, KoreaMed, KISS, RISS, and DBPIA. The final search was completed in August 2021. Two reviewers independently screened and selected studies, extracted data, and conducted a quality assessment. Data to evaluate the effects of nurse navigators was analyzed through meta-analysis and narrative summary. Subgroup analyses were performed. RESULTS A total of 16 studies was included. With low to moderate quality of evidence, nurse navigators had favorable effects on improving the timeliness of care during screening during the first treatment visits (MD = 20.42, 95% CI = 8.74 to 32.10, p = .001). Additionally, 13.0% to 45.0% of nurse navigated patients were more likely to complete cancer care services, although insignificant effects were observed. Study participants from individual studies reported a high satisfaction to the nurse navigators. Subgroup analyses indicated that nurse navigators working as key members in multidisciplinary programs had the greatest effect on reducing waiting times. CONCLUSION Nurse navigators improve cancer patient outcomes by providing more timely care. Additionally, nurse navigators have the substantial potential to increase completion rates to cancer care services and patient satisfaction. For facilitating multidisciplinary care, the use of nurse navigators is highly recommended in the future.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Rural populations experience several disparities, influenced by structural-, community-, and individual-level barriers, across the breast and cervical cancer continuum. OBJECTIVES This study seeks to identify structural-, community-, and individual-level barriers that affect rural populations across the cancer continuum, understand the role of nurses serving rural populations in breast and cervical cancer screening and diagnostics, and provide recommendations for working with rural patients. METHODS This is a secondary analysis of qualitative interviews conducted with public health nurses serving rural populations. FINDINGS Emergent themes indicate that rural populations experience barriers that affect disparities across the breast and cervical cancer continuum, including a changing healthcare landscape, access to cancer-focused care, access to insurance, collective poverty, and demographic factors. Nurses working with rural communities can address these disparities as they fulfill multiple roles and responsibilities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patient navigators can improve patient experiences of care and outcomes, but little is known about how navigation programs may affect physician workflows and experience. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to understand patient and physician experiences with a breast cancer navigation (BCN) program using Lean design principles. METHODS Surveys were developed and distributed from 2019 to 2020 to 255 patients diagnosed with breast cancer and 128 physicians in primary care and cancer-related specialties. Descriptive analyses were conducted. FINDINGS Eighty-three physicians and 94 patients completed the survey. A large majority of physicians reported that the BCN program "made their day easier" and improved flow, care coordination, and patient experience. A large majority of patients reported receiving the right level of support during diagnosis communication and high satisfaction in other domains measured.

Abstract
Patient navigation is a model of care that aims to improve access to care by reducing the complexity of navigating health, education, and social services across the continuum of care and care settings. Little is known about the processes that facilitate or impede the implementation of patient navigation programs (PNPs). We conducted a scoping review to identify and summarize the current state of knowledge regarding the implementation and outcomes of existing implemented PNPs. We employed a 6-stage scoping review framework to identify and review eligible articles. Sixty-articles met the inclusion criteria (58 peer-reviewed and 2 grey literature). The Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research served as the theoretical framework during analysis to help extract factors relevant to implementation of navigator programs. Results of the scoping review are reported thematically. Influences on implementation were identified: (a) planning to ensure alignment with organizational need (b) funding (c) multidisciplinary engagement (d) establishing workflow (e) mechanisms for communication (f) stakeholders to encourage buy-in (g) appropriate caseload (h) in kind resources. PNPs improve the experiences of patients and families. The findings of this scoping review provides implementation considerations of PNPs across global care settings. Strategies for overcoming pragmatic and logistical issues must be developed for optimal implementation.

Abstract
Background: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a rare neuromuscular disease characterized by degeneration of the anterior horn cells in the spinal cord, resulting in muscle atrophy, and proximal muscle weakness. SMA presents with a wide range of symptoms requiring multiple clinical specialists and therapists. Integrating care between disciplines can be challenging due to the dynamic course of the disease, and great distances between specialist centers and local providers. Insufficient care integration can lead to suboptimal quality of care and more difficulties for patients and families. This study aims to improve care integration through a Case Management intervention, and taking a mixed-methods approach, to evaluate its impact. Methods: An exploratory, controlled, two-armed study with baseline, post- and follow-up measurement and process evaluation is conducted to evaluate our intervention compared to usual care. Through a multi-perspective state analysis, we investigate the experiences of caregivers and healthcare providers concerning the actual healthcare quality of patients with SMA I and II. Semi-structured interviews and care diaries are used. We apply that data to conceive a tailored Case Management intervention supplemented by a digital platform. The intervention's effect is examined in comparison to a control group taking a mixed-methods approach. As primary endpoints, we investigate the caregivers' health-related quality of life and the quality of care integration. Secondary endpoints are the use of healthcare services (patients and caregivers) and costs. We assess the process quality from the perspectives of caregivers and healthcare providers through semi-structured interviews. Discussion: This is an exploratory, controlled study to assess the impact of a tailored Case Management intervention to improve the care of patients with SMA I and II. After the evaluation, results on feasibility, expected effect sizes, and process quality will be available. On this basis, future randomized controlled trials can be planned. If demonstrated beneficial, the experience gained within this study may also be valuable for care strategies in other regions and other (non-pediatric) patient groups with rare diseases and/or chronic, complex conditions. The role and competencies of the oncology nurse navigator (ONN) are well defined and emphasize education, communication, and collaboration to support patients, families, and caregivers in overcoming barriers within healthcare systems. The authors describe the operationalization of the ONN role within a large academic health system and present a case study that illustrates the work of a team of navigators. The importance of co-navigating individuals with their community-based navigators and healthcare teams is presented, emphasizing the significance of interprofessional collaboration to support continuity of care for individuals with cancer.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To recognize cancer prehabilitation as a pretreatment regimen to increase functional status for patients requiring cancer treatment. This article presents current evidence addressing the efficacy and benefits of prehabilitation regimens in different cancer survivor populations. DATA SOURCES Studies and case reports in the PubMed database. CONCLUSION Cancer prehabilitation may improve outcomes. Prehabilitation may include targeted or whole-body exercise, nutrition, education, psychologic counseling, and smoking cessation. Opportunities exist to further improve access to and delivery of multimodal prehabilitation, and nurses play a critical role in connecting patients to these services. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE Oncology nurses who are knowledgeable of cancer treatment-related effects are poised to assess survivors for existing impairments, advocate for prehabilitation for existing and potential morbidities, and monitor functional status over time. As patient educators, they are key to informing cancer survivors about the role of prehabilitation.

Abstract
Adnexal masses have a risk of malignancy, especially in postmenopausal women, thus affecting the physical, psychological, and social lives of women with such masses. In addition, patients require a long duration of hospitalization during treatment. In earlier studies, researchers have focused on the experiences of newly diagnosed women or the side effects of treatment. However, women's experiences during the hospitalization period have been ignored. In this study we explored the feelings, thoughts, experiences, and nursing care needs of women hospitalized with adnexal mass diagnosis. In this qualitative study, interviews were conducted with 11 women hospitalized for an adnexal mass or ovarian cancer diagnosis. The feelings, thoughts, and experiences of the women were negatively affected. They were more likely to rely on internal motivation and had lesser expectations of professional support. Thus, nurses should provide women with this diagnosis social support and facilitate their adaptation to the hospital. The diagnosis and treatment of adnexal masses is a complex process that requires teamwork. Therefore, navigator nurses can be of great help to women during their illness.

Abstract
Published studies regarding patient navigation (PN) and cancer were reviewed to assess quality, determine gaps, and identify avenues for future research. The PubMed and EMBASE databases were searched for studies investigating the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of PN across the cancer continuum. Each included article was scored independently by 2 separate reviewers with the Quality Assessment Tool for Quantitative Studies. The current review identified 113 published articles that assessed PN and cancer care, between August 1, 2010, and February 1, 2018, 14 of which reported on the cost-effectiveness of PN programs. Most publications focused on the effectiveness of PN in screening (50%) and diagnosis (27%) along the continuum of cancer care. Many described the effectiveness of PN for breast cancer (52%) or colorectal cancer outcomes (51%). Most studies reported favorable outcomes for PN programs, including increased uptake of and adherence to cancer screenings, timely diagnostic resolution and follow-up, higher completion rates for cancer therapy, and higher rates of attending medical appointments. Cost-effectiveness studies showed that PN programs yielded financial benefits. Quality assessment showed that 75 of the 113 included articles (65%) had 2 or more weak components. In conclusion, this review indicates numerous gaps within the PN and cancer literature where improvement is needed. For example, more research is needed at other points along the continuum of cancer care outside of screening and diagnosis. In addition, future research into the effectiveness of PN for understudied cancers outside of breast and colorectal cancer is necessary along with an assessment of cost-effectiveness and more rigorous reporting of study designs and results in published articles.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To provide a current overview of the scope and epidemiology of gynecologic cancers. DATA SOURCES A review of articles dated 2005-2018 from PubMed, as well as data from The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Cervical Cancer Coalition, and the American Cancer Society. CONCLUSION Gynecologic cancers include any cancer that originates in a woman's reproductive system; cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal, vulvar, and fallopian tube (which is very rare), each named for the body part in which the cancer commences. The overall incidence of these cancers has decreased with time, except for vulvar and endometrial cancers, but racial disparities still exist. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE Nurses play a significant role in educating patients on the importance of preventative measures and modifiable lifestyles and behaviors. Likewise, nurses are in a unique position to help coordinate patients' care, thereby improving patient satisfaction. Nurses can participate and contribute to gynecologic research and influence political change to benefit those affected by gynecologic cancers.

Abstract
The objective of this article is to introduce the Clinical Framework for Quality Improvement of Cancer Cachexia (Cachexia Care Framework) as a tool to demonstrate the relevance of integrating the clinical components of cancer cachexia and the organizational strategies of a cancer institution on the quality of patient care and delivery of services throughout the cancer cachexia continuum. The data sources included peer-reviewed literature relevant to cancer cachexia and quality cancer care, and the authors’ expertise. The Cachexia Care Framework results from a combination of the international consensus definition of cancer cachexia, the Institute of Medicine report Ensuring Quality Cancer Care, and the authors’ experience with a cancer cachexia clinic. This framework is proposed as a guidance for oncology nurses and other healthcare providers to improve the quality of care of cancer cachexia patients. Specifically, the framework can be used by oncology nurses involved in the care of patients diagnosed with cancer cachexia either in direct patient care, administration, research, or education. Nurses can use the framework in clinical practice to identify specific assessments and interventions based on the cachexia stage of the patient; in nursing administration, the framework offers a wide view of potential errors that can happen and the opportunity to prevent them; in nursing research, the framework illustrates the several factors and processes that can impact patient outcomes; and in nursing education, the framework outlines the elements necessary to develop and implement a continuum education curriculum to educate the workforce of oncology nurses, and in the academic setting, an interprofessional curriculum to educate nurses and many other healthcare disciplines.
